Abstract:For the two-stage DC-DC converters of 48-V input with low-voltage and high-current output,a magnetic integration structure including two inductors and one transformer is proposed.It features the maximum utility ratio of the core window areas and can reduce the copper loss and improve the heat dissipation of the integrated magnetics.By applying the proposed structure to integrate the magnetic components,a 90-W prototype of the "buck-cascaded half-bridge" DC-DC converter was implemented.The experimental results show that the converter's original operating characteristics can be kept by using the proposed magnetic integration structure.Based on the experimental results,the power loss of the integrated magnetics was analyzed and further some optimization suggestions were given.

Abstract:Existing magnetic integration methods can be classified into three kinds: the non-coupled, the coupled, and their "mixtures". They, having different features, are appropriate for different applications. For the buck- cascaded half-bridge (duty cycle a 50%) DC-DC converter, the analysis results show that the non-coupled magnetic integration methods are preferred. In this paper, a non- coupled magnetic integration structure including two inductors and one transformer is proposed for it. In the proposed structure, the limited window areas of the magnetic cores are fully utilized. With the increase of the winding cross-section areas and the heat dissipation surface area, the copper loss of the integrated magnetics can be reduced and the cooling condition of it can be improved. A quarter-brick prototype of the buck-cascaded half-bridge DC-DC converter with 48-V input and 1.5-V/60-A output is implemented and tested to verify the feasibility of the proposed magnetic integration structure. With the experimental data, the power loss of the integrated magnatics has been analyzed. Finally, some optimization proposals are offered.

Abstract:The trend toward high efficiency and high power density for power converters will continue. Magnetics integration can reduce the total volume of the magnetics, helping to achieve high power density. The integrated magnetics (IM) with asymmetrical windings can reduce the magnetic volume while keeping low winding loss simultaneously. However, the conventional design needs a huge cross-sectional area for the integrated magnetics due to the small effective resonant inductor winding numbers when a large resonant inductance is needed. In order to achieve a compact design, this paper gives a design methodology for the integrated magnetics with asymmetrical windings for a wide range of inductance values. The winding arrangement with the lowest magnetomotive force (MMF) is deduced to reduce the winding loss furtherly. To verify the proposed design methodology, integrated magnetics with a relative large resonant inductance are built and tested on a 2kW CLLC DC/DC resonant prototype.

Abstract:The resonant dc–dc converter is preferred for high-efficiency applications due to its less switching loss and better electromagnetic interference (EMI) characteristics. However, in a wide range of steady-state voltage gain applications, such as the on-board charger application, the wide output voltage range will lead to a bulky resonant inductor, which will decrease the power density. Magnetic integration of the inductor and transformer is an effective way to reduce the total magnetic volume. However, the traditional integrated magnetics of transformer and inductor will result in high magnetic field intensity in the external space nearby the integrated magnetic component. This external magnetic field will cause large eddy current losses in the neighboring metal heatsink and serious EMI issues. In order to deal with this problem, an integrated winding structure with a negligible external magnetic field is proposed in this article. By rebuilding the external winding segments with a better coupling coefficient, the external magnetic field intensity is canceled without efficiency and size sacrifices. Detailed analysis and design procedures of the proposed structure are presented. A 6.6-kW dc–dc prototype is built to verify the cancelation effect of the magnetic field intensity in the neighboring external space.
Topology Derivation of Transformerless Inverter Without Leakage Current Based on Graph Theory

Abstract:This paper proposes a topology derivation method based on graph theory, which can obtain topologies that meet specified power requirements given the port type, the number of components, and the target function of the circuit. The method uses graph theory to represent the circuit topology with an adjacency matrix. All closed loops can be obtained using a breadth/depth-first search method. Following this, initial topologies that match the required type and number of devices can be found. Circuit rules and the target circuit function can be converted into matrix constraints. Matrices that violate the constraints are then deleted to remove undesired topologies. A transformerless inverter without leakage current is explored as an example of the target function. The method yields several basic topologies with the minimum number of switches that meet the requirements. Expanding on this, working mode analysis and simulation of an integrated boost inverter are carried out to verify the validity of the method and the inverter topology result.
Modeling and Design of Integrated Inductor and Transformer Considering Superposed Flux Density in On-Board-Charger

Abstract:In the DC-DC stage of On-Board-Charger (OBC), the volume of transformer and AC side inductor can occupy more than 1/4 of the total volume, which becomes a key restriction to the improvement of power density. Magnetics with split-windings structure can construct enough leakage inductance to achieve integration and thus reduce the total magnetics volume dramatically. However, when referred to the core size design, only the transformer's flux density is taken into account to determine the cross-section area in the existing papers. On condition that the flux density of the parasitic inductor is large enough, the flux density of integrated magnetics will far outweigh the approximation mentioned above so as to cause the risk of core saturation. This paper gives an analysis and design for integrated magnetics considering the superposed flux density of inductor and transformer based on split-windings structure. A 6.6kW prototype based on LC series resonant DC-DC converter with about 37% reduction of magnetics volume is built to verify the feasibility of the proposed design procedure.

Abstract:Magnetic integration effectively reduces the total magnetic volume for a converter with multiple magnetic components. However, the existing integrated inductor and transformer still face some problems, such as a large core cross-sectional area due to the small effective inductor winding number or low printed-circuits-board (PCB) utilization due to unreasonable winding structure design. A new inductor and transformer integrated magnetic (IM) structure with high PCB utilization and a small core volume for the resonant converter is proposed in this article. The integrated resonant inductor is constructed by both the primary and secondary side windings, which increases not only the effective inductor turn number but also the utilization of the PCB. What is more, the core plates of the inductor and the transformer are integrated to furtherly increase the utilization of the core. The design methodology for the proposed IMs is also given in this article. Finally, the proposed IMs and design methodology are verified on a 2-kW China Power Supply Society (CLLC) prototype. Compared with the discrete magnetic components, the IMs' volume is reduced by about 25% with a similar loss.

Abstract:In this study, an optimization procedure was proposed for the magnetic component of an integrated transformer applied in a center-tap phase-shifted full-bridge converter. To accommodate high power–density 0demand, a transformer and an output inductor were integrated into a magnetic component to reduce the volume of the magnetic material and the primary and secondary windings of the transformer were wound on the magnetic legs to reduce conduction loss attributable to the alternating-current resistor. With a focus on the integrated transformer applied in a phase-shifted full-bridge converter, circuit operation in each time interval was analyzed, and a design procedure was established for the integrated magnetic component. In addition, the manner in which output inductance was affected by the mutual inductance between the transformer and the output inductor in the integrated transformer during various operation intervals was discussed and, to minimize circuit loss, a design optimization procedure for the magnetic core was proposed. Finally, the integrated transformer was applied in a phase-shifted full-bridge converter to achieve an input voltage of 400 V, an output voltage of 12 V, output power of 1.7 kW, an output frequency of 80 kHz, and a maximum conversion efficiency of 96.7%.

Abstract:the dual active bridge topology is attractive in bidirectional DC-DC applications due to its simplicity and soft switching capability. However, its high circulating energy will cause high conduction loss. This paper proposed two new dual active bridge topologies in order to minimize the circulating energy with minimal auxiliary components. These topologies can also achieve ZVS in all load range as well as simple control scheme. These topologies will be attractive in high power high density applications like battery charger, hybrid vehicle, electric vehicle and solar power system. The detailed analysis and comparison between the proposed topologies and traditional DAB converters are also presented in the paper. The experimental and simulation results verified the theoretical analysis well.

Abstract:In this paper, a full bridge converter based on magnetic integration technique has been presented. The input inductor, output inductor and the high frequency isolation transformer of the proposed converter are integrated into one sole magnetic element. Through the analysis, the magnetic integration technique not only improves the power density but also increases the dynamic response of the bridge converter. A 36-V output voltage, 1-kW full bridge converter has been built and tested. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed converter. Meanwhile, the similar magnetic integration technique can be widely used in various types of high frequency isolation DC-DC converter topologies.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a topology simplification method (TSM) for power converters, based on graph theory, to improve the converter design. In the proposed method, a directed graph is first established to model a converter circuits, from which the conceptually new converter adjacency matrix (CAM) is derived. Combined with the electrical features of power converters, a rule for electronics current paths is presented. Then, the redundant components are eliminated based on the proposed TSM and a new CAM is obtained, which is converted to a new directed graph and thus a new converter topology with reduced components. In the process, the integrity of the current paths is preserved and the new topology contains all the current paths of the original converter. With the proposed TSM, the derivations of the existing single-ended primary-inductor converter and current-fed dual active bridge converters are employed for theoretical verification. A novel single-phase boost pushpull converter topology is designed, which is validated by experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid topology optimization methodology based on ON/OFF method and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed. To cater to the topology optimization, improvements are made on both the ON/OFF method and genetic algorithm. The proposed methodology is applied to the topology optimization of a magnetic actuator to maximize the magnetic force in a specific direction to verify its feasibility and effectiveness. The numerical results have demonstrated that the performance of the proposed methodology is significantly superior to those of available techniques.

Abstract:A novel topology of full-bridge isolated DC-DC converters, which is widely used in renewable energy generation and auxiliary railway supply, is presented in this paper. The proposed full-bridge isolated DC-DC converter is composed of a PWM inverter, a diode rectifier and a high frequency (HF) transformer. In this topology, the stabilization of output voltage is difficult to achieve because of high frequency switching operation. The mathematics model of this topology is discussed deeply firstly. The two control methods for stabilizing the output voltage of the full-bridge isolated DC-DC converter are proposed based on modeling and analysis.

In the proposed methodology, a multi-scale ON/OFF method is designed to avoid using infinite number of decision parameters; and a stochastic approximation method is employed to minimize the computational costs when computing the sensitivity information. Numerical results are reported to showcase the merits of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:The volume of the passive components is one of the major challenges in designing a micro-inverter. To improve the power density of a micro-inverter, we propose an integrated structure of passive components including transformer and output filter with flexible multilayer foils (FMLF). The topology of the micro-inverter is modified to enable the integration of these passive components. In this paper, the design procedure of the integrated structure is explained. Finally, a prototype of the micro-inverter with the proposed integration is built to verify the design.

Abstract:A new magnetics integration (MI) scheme for zero voltage switching (ZVS) current fed ZVS full bridge (CFFB) converter with current doubler rectifier (CDR) is presented. Since the input and output inductors are integrated into the windings of the transformer, the magnetics components are reduced significantly. But the leakage inductance of the transformer caused voltage unbalance between input and output due to the duty cycle loss. In order to balance the input and output voltage an independent small inductor is needed. A prototype verifies the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper a new topology of high step-down dc-dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter uses an interleaved structure with one phase using a traditional buck converter and the second phase uses its inverted version. By this technique a high step down voltage conversion can be achieved as compared to the traditional interleaved buck converter. Operating principle and steady state analysis of proposed converter is given. An experiment is carried out on a 25V input, 5V/1A output laboratory prototype to obtain experimental results and verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter. An efficiency of 83.7% is achieved at the rated load and a maximum efficiency of 88% is achieved at 0.5A load current.
