Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables (e.g. wind turbines and photovoltaics) in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced - Denmark expects to be 100 % fossil-free by 2050. Consequently, it is required that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technologically efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role in this energy paradigm shift. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions makes the way for renewable energies. In light of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this presentation. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems like how to lower the cost of energy and to develop emerging power devices and better reliability tool.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of global energy shortages and increasingly severe environmental pollution, renewable energy is gradually becoming a significant direction for future energy development. Power electronics converters, as the core technology for energy conversion and control, play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and stability of renewable energy systems. This paper explores the basic principles and functions of power electronics converters and their specific applications in photovoltaic power generation, wind power generation, and energy storage systems. Additionally, it analyzes the current innovations in high-efficiency energy conversion, multilevel conversion technology, and the application of new materials and devices. By studying these technologies, the aim is to promote the widespread application of power electronics converters in renewable energy systems and provide theoretical and technical support for achieving sustainable energy development.

Abstract:The markedly increased integration of renewable energy in the power grid is of significance in the transition to a sustainable energy future. The grid integration of renewables will be continuously enhanced in the future. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable technology is the main pathway to reach zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2060. Power electronics have played and will continue to play a significant role in this energy transition by providing efficient electrical energy conversion, distribution, transmission, and utilization. Consequently, the development of power electronics technologies, i.e., new semiconductor devices, flexible converters, and advanced control schemes, is promoted extensively across the globe. Among various renewables, wind energy and photovoltaic (PV) are the most widely used, and accordingly these are explored in this paper to demonstrate the role of power electronics. The development of renewable energies and the demands of power electronics are reviewed first. Then, the power conversion and control technologies as well as grid codes for wind and PV systems are discussed. Future trends in terms of power semiconductors, reliability, advanced control, grid-forming operation, and security issues for largescale grid integration of renewables, and intelligent and full user engagement are presented at the end.

Abstract:Power electronic devices (PED) play an important role in developing rail transportation traction systems (RTTS), which has made enormous progress over the past decades. With the development of PED such as thyristor, GTO and IGBT, traditional DC drive systems are replaced by more efficient AC drive systems. Due to the advantages of AC drive system, such as high efficiency, energy saving, environmentally friendly etc, rail transportation has shown rapid development in recent years in China. This has strongly stimulated both power semiconductor industry's demand and technological progress. Focusing on the application of PED, this paper mainly discusses the latest challenges, effective solutions, and development trends of PED for RTTS.
