Abstract:With the implementation of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations, EMC related issues have attracted increasing attentions in power electronics field. This paper reviews recent achievements of the research on EMC/EMI (electromagnetic interference) problems in power electronic equipment. Research activities on EMI modeling and suppression techniques for power converters and motor drives, parasitic effects of EMI filter, PCB layout, and numerical techniques for EMI analysis are discussed briefly. Abstract:Electromagnetic compatibility of high power electronic equipment for the power train in electric vehicle is of utmost importance during the process of electric vehicles' commercialization. The power electronic equipments in the power train are usually composed of DC/DC converters and/or DC/AC inverters. At present, academic researches are usually concentrated on the EMC research of DC/AC inverters. Most EMC researches of DC/DC converters are regarding the conducted emissions of the bidirectional type and along the 12 V power lines. This paper introduces the research achievements in this respect.

Abstract:Power electronics technology has gone through dynamic evolution in the last four decades. Recently, its applications are fast expanding in industrial, commercial, residential, transportation, utility, aerospace, and military environments primarily due to reduction of cost, size, and improvement of performance. In the global industrial automation, energy conservation, and environmental pollution control trends of the 21st century, the widespread impact of power electronics is inevitable. It appears that the role of power electronics on our society in the future will tend to be as important and versatile as that of information technology today. In this paper, the importance of power electronics will be discussed after a brief historial introduction in the beginning. Then, the recent advances of power semiconductor devices, converters, variable-frequency ac drives, and advanced control and estimation techniques will be reviewed briefly. Unlike a traditional technology survey paper, the number of figures is kept intentionally small in favor of the text within the length constraint of this paper. The prognosis of different areas will be highlighted wherever possible based on the author's own knowledge and experience. In conclusion and future scenario, the trend of power electronics and motor drives along with some possible research and development areas will be highlighted.

Abstract:Radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a very important research topic in power electronics systems in recent years as the switching frequencies of power electronics converters increase significantly with the adoption of wide-bandgap (WBG) devices. In this survey article, the radiation mechanisms of both near-field and far-field radiation in power electronics systems are first reviewed. Second, for noise sources, the switching characteristics of switching devices and their impacts on radiated EMI were discussed. Third, high frequency radiated EMI modeling and prediction techniques are summarized for both isolated and non-isolated power converters. Low frequency radiated EMI modeling and prediction techniques were also reviewed. Fourth, techniques developed for the mitigation of noise sources, the reduction of noise on its propagation paths and the optimization of critical PCB traces were fully reviewed. Finally, future challenges and research topics for radiated EMI are discussed.

Abstract:Radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) is a very important research topic in power electronics systems in recent years as the switching frequency of power electronics converters increases significantly. In this article, the mechanism of radiated EMI generation and propagation in power electronics systems was disclosed, a generalized radiated EMI model was developed at first. Then, switching characteristics and its impact on radiated EMI was compared between wide bandgap (WBG) devices and Si MOSFETs. Third, the radiated EMI modeling and mitigation techniques including component improvement, PCB layout improvement, high-frequency EMI filters, and shielding, etc. were reviewed and summarized. Both the radiated EMI research above 30MHz and below 30MHz are surveyed. Future challenges and research topics for the radiated EMI are systematically summarized in the end.

Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables (e.g. wind turbines and photovoltaics) in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced - Denmark expects to be 100 % fossil-free by 2050. Consequently, it is required that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technologically efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role in this energy paradigm shift. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions makes the way for renewable energies. In light of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this presentation. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems like how to lower the cost of energy and to develop emerging power devices and better reliability tool.

Abstract:The markedly increased integration of renewable energy in the power grid is of significance in the transition to a sustainable energy future. The grid integration of renewables will be continuously enhanced in the future. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable technology is the main pathway to reach zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2060. Power electronics have played and will continue to play a significant role in this energy transition by providing efficient electrical energy conversion, distribution, transmission, and utilization. Consequently, the development of power electronics technologies, i.e., new semiconductor devices, flexible converters, and advanced control schemes, is promoted extensively across the globe. Among various renewables, wind energy and photovoltaic (PV) are the most widely used, and accordingly these are explored in this paper to demonstrate the role of power electronics. The development of renewable energies and the demands of power electronics are reviewed first. Then, the power conversion and control technologies as well as grid codes for wind and PV systems are discussed. Future trends in terms of power semiconductors, reliability, advanced control, grid-forming operation, and security issues for largescale grid integration of renewables, and intelligent and full user engagement are presented at the end.
