Abstract:The modern power system is becoming more complicated due to the ever increasing penetration of power electronics, which is referred to as a power-electronics-dominated system (PEDS). In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace, where the challenges should be properly tackled. After the brief introduction of grid-connected converters, this article explores stability challenges of PEDSs, especially on the low inertia issue and multi timescale characteristics, as well as the dynamics when connected to weak grids. The low inertia issue is considered as one of great challenges that power electronics introduce to the conventional power grid. Accordingly, the stability issues of PEDSs are discussed. The exploration reveals that the multitimescale coupling among various control loops and the mutual effects of multiple converters demand much more attention than ever before. The coordinated control of converters for the global stability of PEDSs is also summarized, part of which offers the possibility to solve the inertia problem. This article serves as an inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. In order to provide a more intuitive impression of the inertia problem in PEDSs, a case study is exemplified to highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:Three billion people around the world live in severe energy poverty, including 1.1 billion who live completely off-grid. Providing affordable energy access to them can dramatically impact their living standard, health, education, productivity, and ability to be a part of modern society. In developing economies, the utilization of energy is also limited to some extent. Many programs and initiatives (e.g., the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives and the IEEE Smart Village) have been doing stellar work in tackling energy poverty in developing economies. However, much remains to be done to crowdsource relevant innovation to accelerate the deployment of energy access solutions in the affected areas, including the developing economies. According to the previous programs and initiatives, it has been identified that power electronics is one of the key technologies to address real-life issues in energy access and utilization, water supply, rural transportation, etc., for developing economies. In this context, it calls for innovative and scalable solutions that should be for emerging applications of power electronics with an emphasis on technical innovation and business viability to rapidly and sustainably scale to a wide range of customers in developing economies. Abstract:Electrification of Non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) is more and more urgent due to the demand of pollution reduction and energy conservation. In electrified NRMMs, electrohydraulic control system is still irreplaceable in many working conditions owing to its high power density and shock resistance performance. Meanwhile, electrohydraulic control systems are facing many opportunities to improve its energy efficiency by novel component and circuit design if the internal combustion engines (ICEs) and fossil fuel are replaced by electric motors (EMs) and energy storage devices. However, there are also a lot of challenges about controllability, compactness, lifetime and so on, due to the frequent variable load characteristic and wide speed regulation range of NRMMs. In this study, the technical opportunities and challenges of electrohydraulic control systems are reviewed and summarized in the electrification era of NRMM. Finally, the future directions are considered to improve the energy efficiency and electrification level of NRMMs.

Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions, can pave the way for renewable energies. In view of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:The markedly increased integration of renewable energy in the power grid is of significance in the transition to a sustainable energy future. The grid integration of renewables will be continuously enhanced in the future. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable technology is the main pathway to reach zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2060. Power electronics have played and will continue to play a significant role in this energy transition by providing efficient electrical energy conversion, distribution, transmission, and utilization. Consequently, the development of power electronics technologies, i.e., new semiconductor devices, flexible converters, and advanced control schemes, is promoted extensively across the globe. Among various renewables, wind energy and photovoltaic (PV) are the most widely used, and accordingly these are explored in this paper to demonstrate the role of power electronics. The development of renewable energies and the demands of power electronics are reviewed first. Then, the power conversion and control technologies as well as grid codes for wind and PV systems are discussed. Future trends in terms of power semiconductors, reliability, advanced control, grid-forming operation, and security issues for largescale grid integration of renewables, and intelligent and full user engagement are presented at the end.

Abstract:This paper presents a historical and philosophical perspective on a possible future for power electronics. Technologies have specific life cycles that are driven by internal innovation, subsequently reaching maturity. Power electronics appears to be a much more complex case, functioning as an enabling technology spanning an enormous range of power levels, functions and applications. Power electronics is also divided into many constituent technologies. Till now, the development of power electronics has been driven chiefly by internal semiconductor technology and converter circuit technology, approaching maturity in its internally set metrics, such as efficiency. This paper examines critically the fundamental functions found in electronic energy processing, the constituent technologies comprising power electronics, and the power electronics technology space in light of the internal driving philosophy of power electronics and its historical development. It is finally concluded that, although approaching the limits of its internal metrics indicates internal maturity, the external constituent technologies of packaging, manufacturing, electromagnetic and physical impact, and converter control technology still present remarkable opportunities for development. As power electronics is an enabling technology, its development, together with internal developments, such as wide bandgap semiconductors, will be driven externally by applications in the future.

Abstract:Power electronics technology has gone through dynamic evolution in the last four decades. Recently, its applications are fast expanding in industrial, commercial, residential, transportation, utility, aerospace, and military environments primarily due to reduction of cost, size, and improvement of performance. In the global industrial automation, energy conservation, and environmental pollution control trends of the 21st century, the widespread impact of power electronics is inevitable. It appears that the role of power electronics on our society in the future will tend to be as important and versatile as that of information technology today. In this paper, the importance of power electronics will be discussed after a brief historial introduction in the beginning. Then, the recent advances of power semiconductor devices, converters, variable-frequency ac drives, and advanced control and estimation techniques will be reviewed briefly. Unlike a traditional technology survey paper, the number of figures is kept intentionally small in favor of the text within the length constraint of this paper. The prognosis of different areas will be highlighted wherever possible based on the author's own knowledge and experience. In conclusion and future scenario, the trend of power electronics and motor drives along with some possible research and development areas will be highlighted.

Abstract:The intension and extension of power electronics are inquired through tracing back to the origin and definition of power electronics, and the future trends of power electronics are further discussed in this paper. The development sequence of power electronics, the difference and relationship of micro-electronics and power-electronics, and the substantial change to electromagnetic energy conversion due to power electronics are all analyzed in order to be understood well. Based on the analysis and discussion, a reconsideration on power electronics is proposed in this paper in order to establish a clearer background and more reasonable platform for the modeling, analysis, design and control of power electronic system.
