Abstract:Developing large-scale energy storage is an important way to meet the increasing power demand and increase the consumption of renewable energy. The application of energy storage technology in power grid can delay the investment of power grid, improve the utilization rate of power grid equipment and ensure the overall stability of power grid. This paper first introduces several types of energy storage technologies suitable for large-scale development, compares and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of these energy storage technologies, and points out several key directions for future energy storage development. By analyzing the application scenarios of large-scale energy storage in new energy consumption, the technical and economic indicators required for energy storage application are given, which provides a reference for energy storage technology research.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:Three billion people around the world live in severe energy poverty, including 1.1 billion who live completely off-grid. Providing affordable energy access to them can dramatically impact their living standard, health, education, productivity, and ability to be a part of modern society. In developing economies, the utilization of energy is also limited to some extent. Many programs and initiatives (e.g., the IEEE Empower a Billion Lives and the IEEE Smart Village) have been doing stellar work in tackling energy poverty in developing economies. However, much remains to be done to crowdsource relevant innovation to accelerate the deployment of energy access solutions in the affected areas, including the developing economies. According to the previous programs and initiatives, it has been identified that power electronics is one of the key technologies to address real-life issues in energy access and utilization, water supply, rural transportation, etc., for developing economies. In this context, it calls for innovative and scalable solutions that should be for emerging applications of power electronics with an emphasis on technical innovation and business viability to rapidly and sustainably scale to a wide range of customers in developing economies. Hence, we organized this Special Issue on <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Emerging Applications of Power Electronics in Developing Economies</i> , aiming to bring together researchers, experts, policy makers, and stakeholders to tackle energy poverty issues in developing economies.

Abstract:The distributed generation technology is at the stage of limited application now,confronting restrains from the economic efficiency,business modes and policy environments,and thus to understand these restraints and adopt effective countermeasures is a key issue for its development in a large scale.Summarizing the disadvantages of centralized power supply and the advantages of distributed power supply,and classifying the research subjects related to the distributed generation,this paper makes an overview on the various impacts from the distributed resource integrating into power grids,and its main related research fields,pointing out that how to coordinate the distributed resources and network,or to coordinate microgrid and network is an important issue to be studied and resolved in near future,and the coordination of the distributed resources and network is the basis for the application of distributed generation technology while the coordination of microgrid and network is one of the supports for the construction of smart distributed network.

Abstract:[Introduction] Energy storage is an important component and key supporting technology of Energy Internet. It can provide various services such as peak shaving and frequency modulation. It is an important means to enhance the flexibility, economy and safety of traditional power system. [Method] This paper reviewed the characteristics of the existing main energy storage technologies, and analyzed the functions and requirements of energy storage at power supply side, user side and grid side. According to the status quo of application, the key issues of safety, economy and business model of energy storage are pointed out. [Result] The results show that the energy storage operation simulation, multiple combination utilization, combination of concentration and dispersion should be strengthened from the perspective of energy storage application. [Conclusion] This work provides some guidance for further study on the application research and development of energy storage technology.

Abstract:Electrical power generation is changing dramatically across the world because of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to introduce mixed energy sources. The power network faces great challenges in transmission and distribution to meet demand with unpredictable daily and seasonal variations. Electrical Energy Storage (EES) is recognized as underpinning technologies to have great potential in meeting these challenges, whereby energy is stored in a certain state, according to the technology used, and is converted to electrical energy when needed. However, the wide variety of options and complex characteristic matrices make it difficult to appraise a specific EES technology for a particular application. This paper intends to mitigate this problem by providing a comprehensive and clear picture of the state-of-the-art technologies available, and where they would be suited for integration into a power generation and distribution system. The paper starts with an overview of the operation principles, technical and economic performance features and the current research and development of important EES technologies, sorted into six main categories based on the types of energy stored. Following this, a comprehensive comparison and an application potential analysis of the reviewed technologies are presented.

Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions, can pave the way for renewable energies. In view of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems.

Abstract:With the increasing maturity of large-scale new energy power generation and the shortage of energy storage resources brought about by the increase in the penetration rate of new energy in the future, the development of electrochemical energy storage technology and the construction of demonstration applications are imminent. In view of the characteristics of different battery media of electrochemical energy storage technology and the technical problems of demonstration applications, the characteristics of different electrochemical energy storage media and the structure of energy storage systems are summarized. On this basis, different demonstration applications are analyzed by examples and their internal structures are analyzed. And the role played in the power grid, and finally the development of electrochemical energy storage technology was summarized and prospected.

Abstract:As a flexible power source, energy storage has many potential applications in renewable energy generation grid integration, power transmission and distribution, distributed generation, micro grid and ancillary services such as frequency regulation, etc. In this paper, the latest energy storage technology profile is analyzed and summarized, in terms of technology maturity, efficiency, scale, lifespan, cost and applications, taking into consideration their impact on the whole power system, including generation, transmission, distribution and utilization. The application scenarios of energy storage technologies are reviewed and investigated, and global and Chinese potential markets for energy storage applications are described. The challenges of large-scale energy storage application in power systems are presented from the aspect of technical and economic considerations. Meanwhile the development prospect of global energy storage market is forecasted, and application prospect of energy storage is analyzed.

Abstract:<p>Energy crisis and the global impetus to "go green" have encouraged the integration of renewable energy resources, plug‐in electric vehicles, and energy storage systems to the grid. The presence of more than one energy source in the grid necessitates the need for an efficient energy management system to guide the flow of energy. Moreover, the variability and volatile nature of renewable energy sources, uncertainties associated with plug‐in electric vehicles, the electricity price, and the time‐varying load bring new challenges to the power engineers to achieve demand‐supply balance for stable operation of the power system. The energy management system can effectively coordinate the energy sharing/trading among all available energy resources, and supply loads economically in all the conditions for the reliable, secure, and efficient operation of the power system. This paper reviews the framework, objectives, architecture, benefits, and challenges of the energy management system with a comprehensive analysis of different stakeholders and participants involved in it. The review paper gives a critical analysis of the distributed energy resources behavior and different programs such as demand response, demand‐side management, and power quality management implemented in the energy management system. Different uncertainty quantification methods are also summarized. This review paper also presents a comparative and critical analysis of the main optimization techniques used to achieve different energy management system objectives while satisfying multiple constraints. Thus, the review offers numerous recommendations for research and development of the cutting‐edge optimized energy management system applicable for homes, buildings, industries, electric vehicles, and the whole community.</p>

Abstract:Intelligent power electronics device is the important foundation for smart grid and energy Internet.It is vitally important and has practical significance to carry out research on intelligent power electronics device.In order to promote the theoretical research and practical development of intelligent power electronics devices, this paper surveys the current progress of intelligent power electronics device.Power electronics devices are classified according to their major functionalities.For each class, this paper discusses supporting techniques such as sensing, communication, automatic control and so on.Based on the analysis of research directions of intelligent monitoring, fault diagnosis and condition assessment, this paper summarizes the application situation of intelligent power electronics devices.In the end, this paper discusses the development trend of intelligent power electronic devices, and proposes suggestions on some urgent problems.

Abstract:Vigorously developing renewable energy generation is an effective way to tackle the challenges of energy crisis and air pollution.High proportion of renewable energy integration will be one of the basic characteristics of future power systems.This paper summarizes a number of key issues for power systems with a high proportion of renewable energy generation from two aspects: the power system planning and operation under high level uncertainty and the stability mechanism of power system with massive integration of power electronic devices.On this basis, a theoretical research framework is proposed by dividing the above two scientific issues into five sub-problems: the evolution of power system structure and its forecasting model;a multi-objective planning method for AC/DC transmission network with a high proportion of renewable energy generation;the distribution system planning with a high proportion of renewable energy generation;the stability analysis of power electronics dominated power systems;the cooperative optimal operation theory of AC-DC hybrid power system with a high proportion of renewable energy generation.The relationship among the five sub-problems is described.Finally, key technologies for future power systems with a high proportion of renewable energy generation are provided and prospected.
