Abstract:The synthesis of ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymers with controlled chain composition distribution via tandem polymerization of ethylene is of great challenge because of the complexity of the reaction process involving both ethylene oligomerization and copolymerization. Herein, we report a modelguided oligomerization catalyst feeding approach for tailoring copolymer composition distribution, producing ethylene/1-hexene copolymers with high performance. The copolymers having a cumulative copolymer composition of 5.7 mol % and instantaneous composition distribution in the range of 0-7.3 mol % can be tailored using this strategy, compared to a narrower distribution of 2.8-7.6 mol % under one-time feeding of the oligomerization catalyst. Meanwhile, the model-guided feeding strategy afforded the copolymers having higher contents of [EEE] and [EHH] sequences at 85.93 and 0.33% in comparison with 83.44 and 0.03% for one-time feeding. The lamellar thickness distribution is also increased from 1.16 to 1.33. As a result, the tensile strength of the copolymer increases from 26.3 to 38.1 MPa and the elongation at break increases from 685 to 740%. Tandem polymerization of ethylene with the model-guided feeding of the oligomerization catalyst promises the preparation of high-performance copolymers of ethylene and 1-hexene or other alpha-olefins.
Modeling of Molecular Weight and Copolymer Composition Distributions for Ethylene‐propylene Solution Copolymerization

Abstract:A comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to investigate spatial distributions of molecular weight distribution (MWD) and copolymer composition distribution (CCD) for ethylene-propylene (EPM) copolymers in a bubble column reactor. The CFD approach incorporated Euler-Euler two-fluid model, copolymerization kinetics, and copolymer microstructural distribution model together by user-defined functions for ethylene-propylene heterogeneous copolymerization process. MWD and CCD distributions were calculated by introducing Flory's distribution and Stockmayer's distribution, respectively. CFD model results were validated with literature data. The multiphase hydrodynamics, interphase mass transfer, spatial-temporal variations of MWD and CCD distributions were analyzed. Both distributions are wider at the inlet of reactor for the inefficient mixing, but narrower at the outlet due to fully developed flow and polymerization. This model is beneficial to the improvement of polymer products and process control in industrial EPM reactor.

Abstract:Copolymerization of CO 2 and epoxides is an industrially relevant means to alleviate anthropogenic carbon emissions and non-degradable plastic pollution. Despite recent advances, few studies have focused on controlling the enchainment of ether and carbonate segments, a process that determines the performance of the material. Here we report precise control of the enchainment of ether and carbonate segments by using a series of well-defined dinuclear organoboron catalysts. By altering the catalyst structure and optimizing reaction conditions, the alternating carbonate content in the propylene oxide/CO 2 copolymer is finely regulated over a wide range of 3.0–95.2%, and the polyether content is arbitrarily varied between <0.1% and 97.0%. A unique microstructure, the -ABB- linkage, is identified by NMR spectroscopy, hydrolysis-derivatization experiments and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the -ABB- microstructure originates from a regioselectivity-directed copolymerization process. By analysis of the crystal structures of four catalysts and their catalytic performance, we quantified a correlation between dinuclear organoboron catalyst structure and sequence selectivity (-AB-, -ABB- and -AB n -, n ≥ 3) in propylene oxide/CO 2 copolymerization, which should enable new catalyst design for this sustainable transformation.

Abstract:The kinetics of the tetrabutyl titanate-catalyzed homogeneous succinic acid/1,4-butylenediol (BDO) and heterogeneous terephthalic acid/BDO esterifications were investigated experimentally and theoretically. A unified kinetic model considering two main esterifications as well as one reversible polycondensation and two THF-forming side reactions has been developed for the two esterification systems. The model agrees well with the experimental results. The effects of reaction temperature, diol/diacid ratio, catalyst amount, and heterogeneity on the esterification kinetics are simulated and discussed.

Abstract:The discovery of highly active 2,6-bis(imino)pyridyl iron and cobalt complexes provided a milestone of late-transition metal catalysts for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization with being currently investigated for the scale-up process. The crucial problems are remaining in the catalytic systems: the catalytic systems targeting ethylene polymerization produce more oligomers at elevated reaction temperatures, however, there is a recognizable amount of high-molecular-weight polyethylene remained in the modified catalytic system for the oligomerization process. Beyond the modification of bis(imino)pyridyl metal complexes, several alternative procatalysts' models have been developed in our group. This review highlighted the achievements in exploring new iron and cobalt complexes with tridentate NNN ligands as procatalysts for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization.

Abstract:With the change of the condensing agent (n-hexane) content in the process of ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization, three polymerization environments of pure gas phase environment, poor n-hexane environment and rich n-hexane environment were established. The "comonomer effect" and the "cosolubility effect" collectively affect the copolymerization reaction. The results show that the polymerization activity decreases in the pure gas phase environment, due to the capillary condensation inside the dry particles, and the comonomer effect dominates. In the poor n-hexane environment, because of the high molar concentration ratio of 1-hexene/ethylene in the wet particles at the initial stage, the polymerization activity remains basically unchanged under the competition of the comonomer effect and the cosolubility effect. With the increase of n-hexane content, co-solubility effect dominates, and the polymerization activity rises. The liquid-containing particle polymerization mode that the molar concentration ratio of 1-hexene/ethylene in the gas phase and slurry environment is the best maximizes the polymerization activity. In the rich n-hexane environment, the polymerization activity decreased slightly due to the dilution of 1-hexene concentration by n-hexane. The short chain branch degree of polyethylene products is almost the same in the pure gas phase environment and the poor n-hexane environment, slightly higher than that in the rich n-hexane environment.

Abstract:Experiments were carried out in a novel laboratory reactor with an on-line monitor and a control system to study the kinetics of bulk polymerization of propylene in both gas and liquid phases. Flory-Huggins equation was used to estimate the monomer concentration in the amorphous region of the polymer. The time evolution of polymerization rate under all conditions followed the same pattern, with a fast decay in the early stage of the polymerization and a relatively slow decay in the later stage. Two nth-order decay models were developed to describe the polymerization rates. Experimental data were used to estimate the model parameters. It was found that the apparent activation energies in both phases were similar to each other, while the decay order in the liquid phase was found to be 1.7 that was lower than that in the gas phase process. It implied that less thermal runaway was achieved in the liquid process. The model described the experimental results well.

Abstract:Due to significant enhancement in heat removal capacity of recirculating gas and space-time yield of fluidized bed reactors, condensed mode operation has become most popular in gas-phase ethylene polymerization. A mathematical model for condensing mode operation of gas phase ethylene polymerization process was established, which included fluidized-bed reactor model, stage heat exchanger model, and control model of reactor temperature, pressure, and component partial pressure of recirculating gas. Process simulation was applied to obtain steady state solution when reactor temperature was controlled by close-loop, and dynamic behavior of the system under small perturbation was used to qualitatively analyze stability of ethylene polymerization when reactor temperature was controlled by open-loop and close-loop. Finally, stepwise response characteristics of ethylene polymerization close-loop system was studied under consideration of 1-hexene partial pressure and catalyst feed rate. Simulation results show that the steady state solutions are stable within the scope of studied conditions when reactor temperature is close-loop controlled, whereas the steady state solutions are divided into stable and unstable zone by bifurcation points when reactor temperature is open-loop controlled. The long and short period oscillations observed in stepwise response of reactor temperature to 1-hexene partial pressure reveal that ethylene polymerization system under condensed mode operation is a complex process with multiple coupling control loops.

Abstract:Fluidized bed reactors are widely applied to the production of polyolefin resins. A novel dynamic operation mode of a liquid-containing fluidized bed reactor for ethylene polymerization is proposed. The spatial and temporal scale effects of the condensed liquid on the polymerization reaction conditions and chain structure of polyethylene are investigated by periodically introducing the condensed liquid into the fluidized bed reactor. It is found that the instantaneous yield of polyethylene, instantaneous molecular weight and instantaneous comonomer composition of polyethylene varied along with time in the same direction. The simulation results indicate that the dynamic operation mode of the liquid-containing fluidized bed reactor provides an effective approach to regulating the chain branching distribution of polyethylene.
On-line Fast Detection and Control of Composition for Binary Gas-Phase Copolymerization of Olefins

Abstract:A novel laboratory reactor system for the multistage polymerization of olefin has been developed,in which a new on-line monitoring system consisting of a differential pressure volumetric flow meter,a thermal mass flow meter and control valves was adopted to detect and control monomer compositions in the gas phase with a delay time of 0.01~3 s.With this apparatus,PP/EPR alloy was synthesized and kinetics for the second stage,the gas-phase copolymerization process was studied.The results indicated that the composition for the binary gas-phase copolymerization of olefin could be sensitively and precisely controlled with the aid of the new control system.Meanwhile,instantaneous reaction rate of monomers,and the instantaneous copolymer composition,were on-line measured and controlled.It has been demonstrated that this reactor system is a useful platform for studies of gas-phase olefin copolymerization process and preparation of high performance polyolefin alloy.

Abstract:A kinetic model was developed for the living copolymerization of ethylene/1‐octene using the fluorinated FI‐Ti catalyst system, bis[N‐(3‐methylsalicylidene)‐2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluoroanilinato] TiCl2/dried methylaluminoxane is presented. The model was first validated by batch polymerization experiments. Kinetic parameters were estimated from the model correlations with online ethylene consumption rates and end‐of‐batch copolymer molecular weight. The model was then used to calculate the microstructural properties of ethylene/1‐octene copolymers with controlled composition profiles (uniform, diblock, and step triblock), which were synthesized using sequential comonomer feeding policies in semibatch copolymerization. The synthesized block copolymers had the exact composition distributions and molecular weights as the model simulated. Effect of Temperature Switching and Dynamic Phase Equilibrium on Polymer Microstructure in Condensed-Mode Operation

Abstract:Condensed mode operation is an important advance in breaking through the heat transfer limitations of olefin polymerization in fluidized bed reactors (FBR). It is well known that gas-liquid-solid (G-L-S) and gas-solid (G-S) zones with temperature gradients exist within the FBR in condensed mode, but little is known about how these zones affect the polymer microstructure of fluidized particles. In this work, we report a class of model copolymers with propylene as the comonomer and evaluated this issue by varying the reactor temperature in time order and the consequent change in phase equilibrium, simulating the temperature switching of the particles between the G-L-S and G-S zones. Temperature switching in both zones resulted in wavy kinetic curves and enhanced polymerization kinetics as compared to the dry mode. The molecular weight of the polymer increases, and the MWD becomes narrower compared to the dry mode. MWD deconvolution results showed that two low molecular weight site types were eliminated in the condensed mode, and temperature switching appears to introduce a novel type of low molecular weight site. Moreover, temperature switching resulted in significantly lower insertion of comonomers regardless of whether it was in condensed mode or dry mode. This work not only elucidates the effects of complex hydrodynamics and temperature switching on polymer microstructure and active sites, but also demonstrates how model copolymers can be used extensively to develop polymer microstructure assessments at the industrial reactor scale.

Abstract:A mathematical model was developed to describe ethylene–1-hexene copolymerization with a tandem catalysis system. A series of semi-batch polymerization runs catalyzed by a trimerization catalyst bis(2-dodecylsulfanyl-ethyl)amine-CrCl3 and a copolymerization catalyst Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 in toluene at 74∘C were carried out to verify the model. Both experimentation and modeling showed that adjusting the Cr/Zr ratio yielded various branching densities and thus melting temperatures, as well as molecular weights and polydispersities. Broad composition distributions and thus broad DSC curves were observed at high Cr/Zr ratios. Modeling results elucidated that this is due to an accumulation of 1-hexene component and to composition drifting during the copolymerization. It was also found that applying a short time period of pre-trimerization improved homogeneity in chain microstructure and minimized broadening in DSC curves.

Abstract:Kinetic parameter estimation for a complex copolymerization process has always been a challenge in the modeling procedure. This study aims at the kinetic parameter estimation for a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) gas-phase process from molecular weight distribution (MWD) and short-chain branching distribution (SCBD) measurements. First, experimental MWD and SCBD are simultaneously deconvoluted to obtain intermediate model parameters as output variables. Then, appropriate nominal values of the kinetic parameters are provided by solving an optimization problem. This procedure plays a significant role in narrowing down the range of the nominal values. The determined output variables and nominal parameter values are used to form a sensitivity matrix for parameter estimability analysis. After that, a new parameter ranking strategy is proposed using hierarchical clustering. Based on the determined nominal values, the ranking results obtained using the proposed strategy in a robustness test are more robust than those obtained under random nominal values. Lastly, the hierarchical clustering is combined with Wu's mean squared error-based method to determine an estimable parameter subset, during which the selected kinetic parameters are estimated by matching the intermediate model parameters. The gas-phase copolymerization process model based on the estimated parameter values is further validated with different MWD and SCBD measurements. Model predictions show good agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:Due to the high degree of strain in the small 3-membered ring, the ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide is initiated easily. The progress in the ring-opening polymerization kinetics of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide is reviewed in this paper. The kinetics of the ring-opening polymerization, the reactivity ratios of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide copolymerization and the molar mass distribution of polyether are discussed respectively. The importance of the research in the ring-opening polymerization kinetics is emphasized.
Control of Diffusion/Barrier Effects of Polymer-Coated Particles and the Strengthening of Ethylene Polymerization Reactor

Abstract:In order to produce broad/bimodal molecular weight polyethylene in a single reactor,strengthen the ethylene polymerization process,to reduce the investment in production and energy consumption,and achieve the molecular scale mixing in situ chemical synthesis,a diffusion/barrier composite support was prepared to regulate and control properties of polyethylene.Based on phase inversion principle,spherical and well-dispersed polymer-coated particles(SiO2/PSA) were successfully prepared using silica(SiO2) and poly[styrene-co-(acrylic acid)](PSA).Then we successfully prepared supported hybrid catalysts with different catalyst divided by PSA layer.With ethylene,hydrogen and α-olefin diffuse differently in the PSA layer,and active components such as Cp2ZrCl2,TiCl3 and TiCl4 behave differently in dynamic,we construct two micro-chemical environment,inside and outside of the PSA layer,so that active component prepares low Mw,low branched polymer chains and high Mw,high branched polymer chains separately in different micro-chemical environment.Meanwhile,we could regulate the active component and the thickness of PSA layer to control the molecular weight distribution of polyethylene.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A series of ethylene, propylene homopolymerizations, and ethylene/propylene copolymerization catalyzed with rac ‐Et(Ind) 2 ZrCl 2 /modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) were conducted under the same conditions for different duration ranging from 2.5 to 30 min, and quenched with 2‐thiophenecarbonyl chloride to label a 2‐thiophenecarbonyl on each propagation chain end. The change of active center ratio ([C * ]/[Zr]) with polymerization time in each polymerization system was determined. Changes of polymerization rate, molecular weight, isotacticity (for propylene homopolymerization) and copolymer composition with time were also studied. [C * ]/[Zr] strongly depended on type of monomer, with the propylene homopolymerization system presented much lower [C * ]/[Zr] (ca. 25%) than the ethylene homopolymerization and ethylene–propylene copolymerization systems. In the copolymerization system, [C * ]/[Zr] increased continuously in the reaction process until a maximum value of 98.7% was reached, which was much higher than the maximum [C * ]/[Zr] of ethylene homopolymerization (ca. 70%). The chain propagation rate constant ( k p ) of propylene polymerization is very close to that of ethylene polymerization, but the propylene insertion rate constant is much smaller than the ethylene insertion rate constant in the copolymerization system, meaning that the active centers in the homopolymerization system are different from those in the copolymerization system. Ethylene insertion rate constant in the copolymerization system was much higher than that in the ethylene homopolymerization in the first 10 min of reaction. Abstract:The kinetics of ethylene polymerization catalyzed by Cp2ZrCl2–different aluminoxanes was studied. More than one type of active site was presented in the polymerization reaction based on an analysis of the GPC curves. A multiple active sites kinetic model (MSmodel) was proposed. Good agreements in polymerization rate and variation of polydispersity were achieved for fitting the kinetic profiles with the MSmodel.
