Abstract:ZrO2 ferrule, the core component of the optical fiber connector, plays an important role in the properties of ZrO2 ferrule. In this paper, the nano-sized ZrO2 ceramic powder was prepared by chemical precipitation process. According to this method, ZrOCl2·8HO, water and PEG-6000 was separately selected as the raw material, solvent and additive. Best processing conditions was determined: consistence of ZrO2 was 0.5mol/L, reaction temperature was 80° and sintering temperature was 600°. The ceramic sintering body was prepared at different pressure and temperature with using the nano-sized ceramic powder which were prepared under the best processing conditions. The structure of the nano-sized ZrO2 ceramic powder was characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and it proved that nano-sized ZrO2 ceramic powder sintered at 600° was mainly the tetragonal phase; Porosity was characterized by Scanning electron microscope(SEM) and it proved that the porosity of sintering body decreased with the increasing temperature. The wearability was tested on MPX-2000 friction pin-disk testing machine and it proved that within a certain temperature range, wearability increased with the increasing molding pressure. Finally, the best sintering temperature was determined as 1450° and the best molding pressure was determined as 600MPa.

Abstract:The rheology behaviour of zirconia feedstock and the injection molding of optical ferrule and. sleeve were investigated in this paper. The ferrule and sleeve blanks after sintering had good dimension tolerances. The finished sleeves with low insert loss and suitable pulling force were obtained with high production efficiency.

Abstract:Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/BaTiO3 composite powders are synthesized by the liquid-solid hybrid method through mixing BaTiO3 sol and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 powder together,in which the BaTiO3 sol is prepared by sol-gel method and the Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 powder is synthesized by self-combustion method.The Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4/BaTiO3 composite ceramics are successfully prepared by pressing powder into green pellets and rings,and then sintering at different temperatures.The influences of ferrite phase on both the dielectric and magnetic properties of the composite are studied.The results show that,similar to the percolation behavior,the dielectric constant increases exponentially with increasing ferrite phase when its mole fraction is below 50% in the composite;while it remains almost a constant of about 10 000 F/m when the ferrite phase is more than 50%.The permeability of the composite increases from 5 to 18 H/m as ferrite phase increases from about 50% to 90%.It is clear that the composite ceramics with high dielectric constant and acceptable permeability can be obtained via the liquid-solid hybrid method.

Abstract:The zirconia-doped mullite fibers were prepared via a sol-gel method from aluminum isopropoxide-aluminum nitrate-tetraethyl orthosilicate system. The effects of zirconia doping on the sol spinnability, mullitization, structure and thermal stability of mullite fibers were investigated by means of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that Zr—O—C bond was presented with the involvement of zirconium acetate, which accelerated the gelation process of the precursor sol. The mullitization process of the doped fibers was promoted by the formation of less middle-phase residues such as spinel. Among the samples investigated, the 1% ZrO2-doped fibers exhibited the highest thermal stability with a grain growth rate of 11% (from 1 000 °C to 1 300 °C), which is only a half of that for pure mullite fibers.

Abstract:An innovative processing route for fabricating porous zirconia ceramics has been developed based on traditional injection molding method. Azodicarbonamide (AC) was used as the foaming agents and mixed with the zirconia powder and conventional binders (polypropylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate, paraffin wax and stearic acid). There were three stages in the foaming course: (1) Small bubbles nucleated when AC decomposed into N2 and CO in the barrel. (2) Viscosity and pressure drop led to the growth of the bubbles when the melt feedstock was injected into the die cavity. (3) The porous structure was kept in the solidified body. The AC content and injection parameters were optimized to control the pore density and size. The porous green body was debinded at the heating-up rate of 0.5 °C /min to 450°C and sintered at 1550°C. Samples with porosity of 40%-50% and pore sizes from 200-250μm were prepared when the addition of AC was 0.3% by weight. The results showed that ceramic injection molding method was also suitable for fabricating the porous ceramics.

Abstract:Zirconia based porous composite was fabricated by liquid phase dipping and in-situ sintering using the silicon carbide coated carbon fibre perform. Low viscous sol of zirconia precursor dispersed with a high concentration of solid phase was prepared by sol-gel method. The stability of zirconia precursor sol depended on the pH value and the concentration of NH3 center dot H2O dilute, with the optimal values of 3% and 50% respectively. The component and microstructures of the C-f/ZrO2 composite changed with the sintering temperature. Oxidation of the carbon fibre and the secondary reaction were suppressed for the composite sintered at low temperature in argon. Pulling out of carbon fibres took placed, an indicator of the improved mechanical properties of the composite. The flexural strength of the composite sintered at 1100 C approached to 13MPa with the porosity of 54%.

Abstract:Zirconia(5wt.%Y2O3) and Alumina powder are used as theraw material,Zirconia/Alumina Ceramics composite was prepared successfully by gelcasty.Zeta potential,the granulairty distribution,rheological behaviors of the Suspension and The microstructure of green bodies and sintered samples was measured and discussed.The result shown that the YSZ/Al2O3 composite ceramics,which is the 50Vol.% suspension,was prepared at the pH value about 9～10,SD-00 as disperser which addition amount is 1.0wt.%,and the optimum proportion is 70wt.%ZrO2(5wt.%Y2O3) and 30wt.% Al2O3.

Abstract:Zirconia-alumina multiphase ceramic fibers with 80 wt% (Z80A20 fiber) and 10 wt% (Z10A90 fiber) proportions of zirconia were prepared via melt-spinning and calcination from solid ceramic precursors synthesized by controllable hydrolysis of metallorganics. The zirconia-alumina multiphase fibers had a diameter of about 10 μm and were evenly distributed with alumina and zirconia grains. The Z80A20 and Z10A90 ceramic fibers had the highest filament tensile strength of 1.78 GPa and 1.87 GPa, respectively, with a peak value of 2.62 GPa and 2.71 GPa. The Z80A20 ceramic fiber has superior thermal stability compared to the Z10A90 ceramic fiber and a higher rate of filament strength retention due to the stability in grain size. After heat treatment at 1100 °C, 1200 °C, and 1300 °C for 1 h respectively, the filament tensile strength retention rate of Z80A20 ceramic fibers was 87 %, 80 %, and 40 %. While Z10A90 ceramic fiber was fragile after being heated at 1300 °C. The results showed that the high zirconia content facilitated the fiber's thermal stability.

Abstract:<p>A fused deposition modeling(FDM)system via screw extrusion suitable for feeding granular feedstocks with high solid loading was developed. Key parameters included aspect ratio of the screw, the compression ratio and pitch etc. In order to get constant extruded mass flow and wire diameter a processing window was determined by optimizing the barrel temperature, the nozzle diameter and the screwing speed. Microstructural characterization coupled with flexural strength measurement revealed that a higher printing temperature was beneficial to the inter layer bonding. The sintered zirconia ceramic samples with 99% of theoretical density of the 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) and flexural strength of 890 ± 60 MPa was obtained. A set of zirconia ceramic parts with complex geometries and controllable dimensional accuracy was also successfully prepared for demonstrating the potential of the technique.</p>

Abstract:The major problems associated with zirconium diboride-based ceramics are lack of damage tolerance as structure components, so ZrB2/20vol% SiC based ceramics toughened by 20vol% short carbon fibers were produced by hot pressing at 2000°C under 30MPa for 1h. SEM results showed that short carbon fibers could disperse uniformly in powder mixtures and sintered sample through milling. Three-point bend strength and fracture toughness were measured. The decrease in strength from 448MPa to 397MPa as the addition of short fibers was attributed to the chemical reaction between fiber and matrix. The fracture toughness increased from 4.25MPam1/2 for ZrB2/SiC to 6.35MPam1/2 for short fibers toughened ZrB2/SiC, which was led by the crack deflection and fiber fracture.

Abstract:Injection moldings of three types of ultra-fine zirconia powder were investigated. It was demonstrated that powder characteristics involving particle size, particle size distribution, particle shape and specific surface area significantly affect the optimal compositions of binders and ceramic powders, and the properties of sintered compacts. Investigation of the injection molding variables showed that an excessive barrel-deposited value may easily lead to defects in the debound and sintered bodies. It was also demonstrated that the microstructure of a sintered body can be affected by heating rates influencing grain growth, and that suitable heating rates to the high temperature sintering stage for the three powders are different.

Abstract:Injection molding of ultra-fine 3Y-ZrO2 and Al2O3 powders with high purity were studied in this work, which included the fluidity of feedstock, the properties of green bodies and sintered bodies. The bulk density, microstructure and bend strength of 3Y-ZrO2 and Al2O3 were also examined. Fine ceramic components, such as fiber-optic sleeves, ceramic plants and knives, with good surface finish and accurate dimension, have been made by injection molding.

Abstract:The authors developed a new technique combining ceramic injection moulding and liquid precursor infiltration, presenting a new strategy for fabrication of coloured zirconia ceramics. The authors' strategy includes ceramic injection moulding 3Y-TZP powder using a water debinding binder system, debinding moulded parts in water and drying, immersing debound parts in solutions containing different colouring ions and then sintering and creating coloured zirconia ceramics. The fabricated coloured ceramic bars exhibit a core shell structure, and the thickness of the coloured shell can be tailored by adjusting immersion time and temperature. Using solutions containing different colouring ions, ceramic bars with various colours can be prepared.

Abstract:The ambient-pressure-dried ZrO2 aerogels, which had been prepared in our previous work, were enhanced by the zirconia fiber to overcome their fragility. The zirconia fiber was modified by Si lane Coupling Agent KH-570 in order to implement the reinforcement better. The combination between zirconia fibers with ZrO2 aerogels was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the modification for zirconia fiber improves the compatibility and dispersibility of zirconia fibers, and the prehydrolysis of KH-570 contributed to better performance. The modification for zirconia fiber improves the combination of zirconia fiber with ZrO2 aerogels, and maintained the nanoscale porous network structure.

Abstract:Benefiting from the mature technology of ceramic injection molding, Fused deposition modeling based on highly-filled ceramic-polymer granular feedstocks has been showing great potential and advantage for fabricating 3D ceramics. Herein, 3D zirconia ceramics using granular feedstock were fabricated, and typical morphology, surface quality, and effect of the thermal accumulation on 3D structure were clarified. Typical morphology of printing steps on the surface were quantitatively characterized, and determined by the surface curvature and layer height of the printed structure. Aligned triangular pores were confirmed at the junction of the deposited filaments with elliptical cross-section morphology. Simple square plates with different size were used to illustrate the influence of thermal accumulation on the morphology of 3D structure. Small printing size increased the thermal accumulation during deposition, resulting in decreased printing quality caused by the secondary over-melting of former deposited layers. Except for the pores at the junctions, dense zirconia ceramics with uniform structure and smooth surface could be achieved. A low-cost and high-quality route for the preparation of 3D ceramics was demonstrated via FDM of highly-filled granular feedstocks.

Abstract:A novel anisotropy porous mullite fiber network with a quasi-layered microstructure was prepared by vacuum squeeze moulding and sintering. The effects of the initial pressure used in vacuum moulding on the microstructure, thermal properties and mechanical properties of the fibrous porous mullite ceramic were studied. Zirconia fiber was introduced into the ceramic, and the effects of altering the fiber content on the pore structure, porosity and properties of the final ceramic were investigated. Results show that the ceramics prepared in this study exhibited high compressive strength (∼5.16MPa in the x/y direction) and low thermal conductivity (∼0.094W/(mK)). This study also reports an optimal processing method for the production of fibrous porous mullite–zirconia composites, which have the potential for use as ultra-high-temperature thermal insulation material.

Abstract:Nano-sized zirconia powders stabilized by 3 mol% yttria (Y-TZP) were prepared by co-precipitation methods, and then gel-casting and pressing method was applied to fabricate Y-TZP nanoceramics. By this method, a green compact with a pore size of about 3 nm and a relative density of about 53% can be obtained. The sintering ability of this green compact is so good that it can be sintered to relative density of 99% at 1250°C for 2 h.

Abstract:LZ7C3 fibres with nanostructures have been synthesised by the sol-gel method combined with electrostatic spinning technology and a high-temperature-resistant LZ7C3 ceramic material prepared by high-temperature calcination. The formation process of the ceramic fibre was studied and its properties characterized by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. The microstructure of the fibre was analysed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and the properties of the fibre were determined. The results showed that many conditions, such as calcination temperature and silica-sol content, have a pivotal influence on the crystal phase composition and morphology. By comparing the effects of these conditions, ceramic materials with exceptional properties have been prepared.
