Abstract:Carbon nanotube is a kind of novel nano-material. The properties of novel carbon nanotubes modified electrodes permit an important decrease in the overvoltage for the redox of chemicals and a dramatic improvement in the reversibility of the redox behavior of biomolecules. The high surface area possessing abundant acidic sites is propitious to the immobilization of enzyme and promote electron transfer between redox center of enzyme and electrode surface, which will improve the sensitivity and stability of biosensor.

Abstract:An application of carbon nanotubes as immobilization materials for biosensor was described for the first time. Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) functionalized with carboxylic acid groups were cast on platinum electrode. The film of SWNTs was used to immobilize glucose oxidase by covalent combine method forming a glucose biosensor. The biosensor showed stable amperometric response at a low applied potential (0.40 V), a wide response range of pH (5.5-8) and good stability (kept 90% activity after 4 months).

Abstract:The carbon nanotube modified biosensors for respectively monitoring uric acid (UA) and total cholesterol in blood were studied. The transducers were based on two screen-printed carbon electrodes, a carbon working electrode and a reference electrode. For UA sensors, uricase was immobilized on the surface of electrodes together with potassium ferrocyanide as electron transfer mediator. For cholesterol sensors, the corresponding enzyme system consists of cholesterol esterase, cholesterol oxidase, peroxidase and potassium ferrocyanide. Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were applied to prompt electron transfer. Experimental results showed that the carbon nanotube modified biosensors offers a reliable calibration profile and stable electrochemical properties. The calibration graphs were linear up to 200mg/L UA and 400mg/dL cholesterol

Abstract:We report the fabrication of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) DNA sensors and the sensing mechanism. The simple and generic protocol for label-free detection of DNA hybridization is demonstrated with random sequence 15mer and 30mer oligonucleotides. DNA hybridization on gold electrodes, instead of on SWNT sidewalls, is mainly responsible for the acute electrical conductance change due to the modulation of energy level alignment between SWNT and gold contact. This work provides concrete experimental evidence on the effect of SWNT-DNA binding on DNA functionality, which will help to pave the way for future designing of SWNT biocomplexes for applications in biotechnology in general and also DNA-assisted nanotube manipulation techniques.

Abstract:A carbon nanotube (CNT) modified biosensor based on oxygen-independent, pyrrole quinoline quinone glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) for monitoring glucose was studied. The disposable amperometric biosensors based on screen-printed carbon paste electrodes are low cost and suitable for mass production. Potassium ferricyanide was immobilized on the surface of the electrodes as an electron mediator, which decreased the work potential. The biosensor showed a linear amperometric response to glucose from 1 to 35 mM, with a sensitivity of 31.0 µA mM−1 cm−2. Experimentally, the compositions of PQQ-GDH, potassium ferricyanide, CNTs and other components were evaluated and optimized. Only 2 µl of sample are needed for one test, and the response time of the sensor is 20 s. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied through cyclic voltammetry, and experimental results showed that the CNTs could facilitate the electron transfer between the enzyme and electrode surface significantly. Compared with the biosensor without carbon nanotube modification, the CNTs improved the sensitivity of the biosensor up to five times.

Abstract:A novel needle-type biosensor based on carbon nanotubes is reported. Thebiosensor was prepared by packing a mixture of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs),graphite powder and glucose oxidase (Gox) freeze-dried powder into a glass capillary of 0.5mm inner diameter. The resulting amperometric biosensor was characterizedelectrochemically using amperometry in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and in thepresence of glucose. The glucose biosensor sensitivity was influenced by the glucoseoxidase concentration within the MWCNTs mixture. The optimized glucose needle-typebiosensor displayed better sensitivity and stability, and a detected range of up to 20 mM.Based on its favorable stability, the needle biosensor was first time used in real-timemonitoring system as a kind of online glucose detector. The decay of current response isless than 10% after 24-hour continuous observation.

Abstract:A glucose biosensor, based on detecting the reduction of gluconolactone and hydrogen peroxide, has been developed utilizing glucose oxidase and non-woven single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films synthesized by floating chemical vapor deposition technique. The strongly catalytic reduction of gluconolactone and hydrogen peroxide generated from the enzymatic reaction of glucose was observed at applied potential of -0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and led to the selective detection of glucose with a high sensitivity of 34.375 μA/cm 2·mM, a fast response time of less than 15 s and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.05 mM. At such low applied potential, the interference from common interfering agents such as uric acid and ascorbic acid can be minimized. These results demonstrate that the non-woven SWNT films have potential applications in constructing highly sensitive, stable and fast response biosensors.

Abstract:Freestanding single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) films with large area were synthesized by the floating chemical vapor deposition technique. A glucose sensor was constructed using the SWNT films for direct oxidation of glucose in alkaline solution. The SWNT film electrode showed a high and reproducible sensitivity of to glucose with a response time of less than in alkaline solution, even in the presence of chloride ions. These results demonstrate that the SWNT films have potential applications in constructing highly sensitive, stable, and fast response glucose sensors without enzyme loading.

Abstract:This paper describes a disposable electrochemical biosensor for glucose monitoring. The sensor was based on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) immobilized with glucose oxidase and upon screen printed carbon electrode. The effect of MWCNTs on the response of amperometric glucose oxidase electrode for glucose was examined. Results obtained, of interest for basic and applied biochemistry, represent a first step in construction of a MWCNT–enzyme electrode biosensor with potentialities for a successful application in the biosensor area.

Abstract:In this study, we describe the construction of glucose biosensors based on an electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. Gold electrodes were initially functionalized with negatively charged 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid followed by alternate immersion in solutions of a positively charged redox polymer, poly[(vinylpyridine)Os(bipyridyl)2Cl(2+/3+)], and a negatively charged enzyme, glucose oxidase (GOX), or a GOX solution containing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The LBL assembly of the multilayer films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and cyclic voltammetry, while characterization of the single-walled nanotubes was performed with transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. When the GOX solution contained single-walled carbon nanotubes (GOX-SWNTs), the oxidation peak currents during cyclic voltammetry increased 1.4-4.0 times, as compared to films without SWNTs. Similarly the glucose electro-oxidation current also increased (6-17 times) when SWNTs were present. By varying the number of multilayers, the sensitivity of the sensors could be controlled.

Abstract:Novel hybrid films based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanocomposites were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for chemical and bio-sensing properties. Nickel hexacyanoferrate particles were electrodeposited on the porous CNT thin-film to fabricate electrochemical sensors with improved sensitivity to H2O2. Transmission electron microscopy illustrated the deposition of nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles on the surface of carbon nanotubes. The experimental results show the electrode modified with the hybrid nanocomposite film has higher electrocatalytic activity and stability for detection of H2O2 than the electrodes modified with carbon nanotube or nickel hexacyanoferrate alone. With glucose oxidase (GOx) as an enzyme model, we constructed a biosensor based on the CNTs/NiHCF/GOx nanocomposite. An excellent linear relationship up to 1.2 mM has been obtained with a slope of 5.3 mu A/mM for the glucose biosensor. The response time and detection limit (S/N = 3) of the biosensor was determined to be 10 s and 1 mu M, respectively. The high sensitivity to glucose of the biosensor resulted from the high surface area of carbon nanotubes and excellent electrocatalytic activity of the modifiers. The biosensor also performed with excellent reproducibility and good stability.

Abstract:LiNbO3 nanotubes are prepared by biotemplate-assisted synthetic route. The mesoporous LiNbO3 nanotubes can be an ideal platform to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOx) for glucose biosensing. As the GOx-biocatalyzed oxidation of glucose yield H2O2, and LiNbO3 can direct catalyze the generated H2O2. What's more, one dimensional channels will facilitate the diffusion of reactants and ensure adequate contact between glucose and enzymes. Thus the as-prepared biosensor exhibit high sensitivity (52.4μA·mM−1·cm−2), fast response (<2s) and excellent selectivity to glucose. The results suggest the potential implementation of LiNbO3 as a sensing platform for electrochemical detection of biology reagents.
Pt Nanoparticles Inserting in Carbon Nanotube Arrays: Nanocomposites for Glucose Biosensors

Abstract:A facile strategy has been developed to prepare carbon nanotubes loading Pt nanoparticle (Pt-CNT) composites. The method involves the polymerization reaction of glucose and the reduction deposition of a platinum source in the pores of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) under hydrothermal conditions. The Pt-CNT nanocornposites can be obtained through the subsequent carbonization and removal of the AAM template. Through transmission electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that the nanocomposites possess a stable hierarchical structure, in which the Pt nanoparticles are uniformly entrapped on the surface of CNTs. Additionally, the Pt-CNT nanocomposites contain large amounts of oxygen-rich Croups that are beneficial to improving its solubility in water and biocompatibility for retaining the bioactivity of glucose oxidase. The nanocomposites electrode is successfully used as a sensitively amperometric sensor for low-potential determination of H2O2. The Pt-CNT-based glucose biosensor is fabricated by mixing the composites with the glucose oxidase, displaying a wide linear calibration range nearly 3 orders of magnitude of glucose concentrations (0.16-11.5 mM) and a low detection limit of 0.055 mM. Furthermore, the biosensor exhibits some other excellent characteristics, Such as high sensitivity and selectivity, short response time, and long-term stability.

Abstract:The utilization of nanomaterials in the biosensor field has garnered substantial attention in recent years. Initially, the emphasis was on enhancing the sensor current rather than material interactions. However, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained prominence in glucose sensors due to their high aspect ratio, remarkable chemical stability, and notable optical and electronic attributes. The diverse nanostructures and metal surface designs of CNTs, coupled with their exceptional physical and chemical properties, have led to diverse applications in electrochemical glucose sensor research. Substantial progress has been achieved, particularly in constructing flexible interfaces based on CNTs. This review focuses on CNT-based sensor design, manufacturing advancements, material synergy effects, and minimally invasive/noninvasive glucose monitoring devices. The review also discusses the trend toward simultaneous detection of multiple markers in glucose sensors and the pivotal role played by CNTs in this trend. Furthermore, the latest applications of CNTs in electrochemical glucose sensors are explored, accompanied by an overview of the current status, challenges, and future prospects of CNT-based sensors and their potential applications.

Abstract:A novel biosensor for glucose was prepared by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNx-MWNTs) modified electrode. The CNx-MWNTs membrane showed an excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of O2 due to its diatomic side-on adsorption on CNx-MWNTs. The nitrogen doping accelerated the electron transfer from electrode surface to the immobilized GOx, leading to the direct electrochemistry of GOx. The biofunctional surface showed good biocompatibility, excellent electron-conductive network and large surface-to-volume ratio, which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle and electrochemical impedance technique. The direct electron transfer of immobilized GOx led to stable amperometric biosensing for glucose with a linear range from 0.02 to 1.02mM and a detection limit of 0.01mM (S/N=3). These results indicated that CNx-MWNTs are good candidate material for construction of the third-generation enzyme biosensors based on the direct electrochemistry of immobilized enzymes.

Abstract:Glucose sensing and monitoring are crucial for biological and medical applications. Compared to existing methods, real-time detection and long-term monitoring are still required. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have excellent optical properties for sensing applications, which provide the possibility for designing a new generation of glucose sensors. In this study, we describe a method for covalently conjugate glucose oxidase (GOx) on SWCNTs as an optical glucose sensor. The functional groups are introduced by a photocatalytic reaction which acts as the handle for protein loading on SWCNTs. In this sp3 defect reaction, the optical properties of SWCNTs can be maintained. With a convenient bioconjugation reaction, the GOx could be covalently linked with SWCNTs. Compared to the non-covalent immobilization conjugates, the covalent conjugate sensor exhibits a much stronger optical response toward glucose, and the stability of the biosensor also increases in harsh conditions. At the same time, we also report the changing ratio of the original E11 and defected E11* peak during the bioconjugation reaction, which is also inspiring for reaction monitoring on SWCNTs.

Abstract:A glucose biosensor based on glucose oxidase immobilized by electrospinning nanofibrous membranes has been developed. Nanofibrous membranes were electrospun from the solution of poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid) containing carbon nanotubes suspension and directly deposited on Pt electrodes for immobilizing glucose oxidase. The morphologies and structure of the nanofibrous membranes with or without carbon nanotubes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The fabrication parameters of nanofibers were optimized such as thickness of the nanofibrous membranes and mass ration of carbon nanotubes. The biosensor showed the relationship with a concentration range of 0.1–10 mM and response time was 60 s. The sensitivity of carbon nanotubes modified biosensors was two times larger than which of no carbon nanotubes modified ones. The pH effect, interference and lifetime of biosensors were discussed.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical detection represents a unique signal transducing modality, where the photogenerated charge carriers are modulated by the redox reactions of molecular targets over the electrode surface. In this work, we report a novel glucose sensor based on hydrothermally-grown, single-crystalline TiO2 nanowires with surface-functionalized glucose oxidase (GOx), which can oxidize glucose to gluconic acid. The key feature of this glucose sensor design is that the photogenerated holes over the TiO2 anode are utilized to form O-2, which directly serves as an efficient electron shuttling mediator between the enzymatic redox center of GOx and the sensor surface, thus leading to an increase of the photocurrent. As a proof-of-concept, the GOx-functionalized TiO2 (TiO2-GOx) nanowires exhibit a high sensitivity of similar to 0.9 nM in the detection of glucose in buffer. The capability of detecting glucose in mouse serum is also demonstrated. Our work suggests the potential of developing these nanowire-based photoelectrochemical biosensors for convenient, efficient and low-cost biomarker detection and disease diagnosis.

Abstract:We describe our assembly and the analytical performance of a glucose biosensor consisting of an array of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that perpendicularly fall on a 7-μm-diameter carbon fiber and are modified by a "dual" enzymatic system-viz. glucose oxidase (GOx) and Prussian blue (PB, an artificial peroxidase). We chose to use the PB-catalyzed reduction reaction of hydrogen peroxide, an end-product of the GOx-catalyzed oxidation of glucose, to "relay" electrons from GOx to the substrate electrode. We highlight that the electrode-structural alignment of this novel biosensing system plays a crucial role in optimizing the electrochemical- and catalytic-reactions of the enzymes with their substrates. The vertical alignment of enzyme-modified CNTs with the pores located between neighboring individual CNTs creates the simplest optimized pathways for substrates to diffuse to the enzymes and for the generated electrical signals to transport along the nanotube's length to an electronic analyzer. Consequently, the glucose biosensor thus constructed exhibits a high sensitivity of 4.9 μA/mM with a detection limit of 0.05 mmol/L and long-term stability in amperometrically detecting glucose. Our long-range-order assembling of electroactive biomolecules and microscale/nanoscale materials into a multifunctional biocomposite accounts for this superb performance of vital importance in their realistic applications in deciphering glucose and hydrogen peroxide.
