Abstract:A carbon nanotube (CNT) modified biosensor based on oxygen-independent, pyrrole quinoline quinone glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) for monitoring glucose was studied. The disposable amperometric biosensors based on screen-printed carbon paste electrodes are low cost and suitable for mass production. Potassium ferricyanide was immobilized on the surface of the electrodes as an electron mediator, which decreased the work potential. The biosensor showed a linear amperometric response to glucose from 1 to 35 mM, with a sensitivity of 31.0 µA mM−1 cm−2. Experimentally, the compositions of PQQ-GDH, potassium ferricyanide, CNTs and other components were evaluated and optimized. Only 2 µl of sample are needed for one test, and the response time of the sensor is 20 s. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied through cyclic voltammetry, and experimental results showed that the CNTs could facilitate the electron transfer between the enzyme and electrode surface significantly. Compared with the biosensor without carbon nanotube modification, the CNTs improved the sensitivity of the biosensor up to five times.

Abstract:In this study, we reported a highly sensitive nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on Cu/Cu2O composite nanoparticles (Cu/Cu2O NPs) decorated on a single carbon fiber (SCF) by direct in-situ electrochemical cyclic voltammetry deposition. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of the Cu/Cu2O NPs/SCF electrodes displayed a porous structure of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles with an average size of around 30 nm, which greatly increased the surface area of single carbon fiber and provided a large number of catalysis sites towards glucose oxidation. The electrochemical behavior of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry study, in which the as-prepared electrode displayed superior catalytic performance and exhibited an ultra-high sensitivity (28,071 uA mM(-1) cm(-2)) anda wide linear range up to 7.8 mM. The in-situ electrodeposition of Cu/Cu2O nanoparticles and excellent conductivity of carbon fiber improved the electron transfer rate due to direct electron collection and resulted in a short response time (<1 s). Additionally, the electrode also showed good reproducibility, outstanding anti-interference ability and long-time stability, as well as a reliable testing result in bovine serum sample, indicating a potential application in clinical diagnosis and health monitoring.
Pt Nanoparticles Inserting in Carbon Nanotube Arrays: Nanocomposites for Glucose Biosensors

Abstract:A facile strategy has been developed to prepare carbon nanotubes loading Pt nanoparticle (Pt-CNT) composites. The method involves the polymerization reaction of glucose and the reduction deposition of a platinum source in the pores of anodic alumina membranes (AAMs) under hydrothermal conditions. The Pt-CNT nanocornposites can be obtained through the subsequent carbonization and removal of the AAM template. Through transmission electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, it is observed that the nanocomposites possess a stable hierarchical structure, in which the Pt nanoparticles are uniformly entrapped on the surface of CNTs. Additionally, the Pt-CNT nanocomposites contain large amounts of oxygen-rich Croups that are beneficial to improving its solubility in water and biocompatibility for retaining the bioactivity of glucose oxidase. The nanocomposites electrode is successfully used as a sensitively amperometric sensor for low-potential determination of H2O2. The Pt-CNT-based glucose biosensor is fabricated by mixing the composites with the glucose oxidase, displaying a wide linear calibration range nearly 3 orders of magnitude of glucose concentrations (0.16-11.5 mM) and a low detection limit of 0.055 mM. Furthermore, the biosensor exhibits some other excellent characteristics, Such as high sensitivity and selectivity, short response time, and long-term stability.

Abstract:A novel electrochemical glucose biosensor was developed based on in situ covalent immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) by one-pot chitosan (CS)-incorporated sol–gel process in the presence of Prussian blue deposited multi-walled carbon nanotubes hybrids (PB/MWNTs) using 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) as both a sol–gel precursor and a covalent coupling agent for GOx and CS. The electrode modified with the PB/MWNTs-GOx-CS-ICPTES sol–gel composite film showed good electrical conductivity and effective low-potential electron transfer mediation toward H2O2 reduction attributed to the incorporation of PB/MWNTs. The biosensor exhibited a linear response to glucose in the concentration range from 2.5×10−5 to 1.3×10−3M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9998, a detection limit of 7.5×10−6M, a low response time (10s), good sensitivity and high anti-interference ability. Compared with the control biosensor based on the traditional tetraethoxysilane derived sol–gel composite film, the biosensor showed a similarly small apparent Michaelis–Menten constant of 3.67mM but much higher electrochemical and biosensing stability.
Glucose biosensors based on nano-composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and zinc oxide nanorods

Abstract:We demonstrate herein a newly developed amperometric glucose biosensor by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods composites film. The latter is generated by utilizing an electrostatic coordination approach under the assistance of the ultrasonic. The presence of ZnO nanorods in the composites enhances the abilities to electrocatalyze the oxidation of H2O2 and substantially raises the response current, which results in the composites exhibiting more efficiently electrocatalytic activity than those of MWCNTs and ZnO alone. As a result of the cross-linking reactions via glutaraldehyde, a layer of glucose oxidase (GOx) was firmly bound to the MWCNTs-ZnO film and an anti-interferent layer of poly (o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) film was further electropolymerized on the enzyme film. At an applied potential of +0.8 V, the resulting biosensor performs a sensitive and selective electrochemical response to glucose in the presence of common interferences, such as ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA), with a linear dependence (R=0.997) on the glucose concentration in the range of 5.0x10(-6)similar to 5.0x10(-3) mol . L-1 and a detection limit of 3.5x10(-6) mol . L-1 at signal/noise=3. The response time was less than 10 s with addition of 5 mmol . L-1 glucose. The MWCNTs-ZnO/GOx/PoPD modified glassy carbon electrode presents stable, high sensitivity and also exhibits fast amperometric response to the detection of glucose, which is promising for the development of glucose sensor.

Abstract:A glucose biosensor was developed by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOD) into the micro network of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-polyaniline (Pani)-graphene (GRA) hybrid nanocomposite fabricated through phase inversion process. PAN with molecular weight of M-w around 2.93 x 10(4) was synthesized by single rare-earth catalyst-Y(OAr)(3) and GRA with few-layers was prepared by electrochemical expansion of graphite in propylene carbonate electrolyte, respectively. The morphologies of nanocomposites and the fabricated process of biosensor were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) was employed to evaluate electrochemical performance of the as-prepared biosensor. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of enzyme-catalyzed reaction based on Arrhenius equation was estimated to be 16.21 kJ mol(-1). The constructed glucose biosensor exhibited a short response time within 5 s, and a superior storage stability of preserving 96.28% of the original response over a period of 2 weeks and 91.95% of that even after a month. The linear range, sensitivity, detection limit, anti-interference, and practical application were also investigated. The micro network of PAN-Pani-GRA hybrid nanocomposite provides a hopeful candidate for construction of biosensors.

Abstract:Polydopamine (Pdop) has recently been shown to adsorb to a wide variety of surfaces and serves as an adhesion layer to immobilize biological molecules. In this work, the multifunctional carbon nanotube (CNT) composites were prepared though the oxidation of dopamine at room temperature and subsequent electroless silver deposition by mildly stirring. The stable immobilization and direct electron transfer of glucose oxidase were achieved on the composite film modified glassy carbon electrode. The resulting electrode gave a well-defined redox peaks with a formal potential of about −482mV (vs. SCE) in pH 7.0 buffer. The electron transfer rate constant was estimated to be 3.6s−1, due to the combined contribution of Pdop, CNTs and Ag nanoparticles with the help of Nafion. Furthermore, the method for detecting of glucose was proposed based on the decrease of oxygen caused by the enzyme-catalyzed reaction between glucose oxidase (GOD) and glucose. The linear response to glucose ranging from 50.0μM to 1.1mM (R2=0.9958), with a calculated detection limit of 17.0μM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The low calculated apparent Michaelis–Menten constant (KMapp) was 5.46mM, implying the high enzymatic activity and affinity of immobilized GOD for glucose. It can reasonably be expected that this observation might hold true for other noble metal nanostructure-electroactive protein systems, providing a promising platform for the development of biosensors and biofuel cells.

Abstract:A novel amperometric glucose biosensor based on layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic adsorption of glucose oxidase (GOx) and dendrimer-encapsulated Pt nanoparticles (Pt-DENs) on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was described. Anionic GOx was immobilized on the negatively charged CNTs surface by alternatively assembling a cationic Pt-DENs layer and an anionic GOx layer. Transmission electron microscopy images and zeta-potentials proved the formation of layer-by-layer nanostructures on carboxyl-functionalized CNTs. LbL technique provided a favorable microenvironment to keep the bioactivity of GOx and prevent enzyme molecule leakage. The excellent electrocatalytic activity of CNTs and Pt-DENs toward H2O2 and special three-dimensional structure of the enzyme electrode resulted in good characteristics such as a low detection limit of 2.5 mu M, a wide linear range of 5 mu M - 0.65 mM, a short response time (within 5 s), and high sensitivity (30.64 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2)) and stability (80% remains after 30 days).

Abstract:In this study, we developed a convenient way to construct a flexible enzymatic electrode with excellent stability and electrochemical performance for implanted glucose monitoring. The electrode was constructed through the co-immobilization of the glucose oxidase micro-particles (GOD MPs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the inner surface of a gradient-structured hollow fiber membrane (GHM), where CNT improved the electron transport efficiency and GHM controlled the transfer of substances and interferences. GOD MPs showed higher stability under various operation conditions than the free enzymes due to the MnCO3 template method, which enabled the biosensor to remain relative sensitivity at >86% over 9 days. The GOD MPs biosensor also showed high selectivity, reproducibility, and linear sensing range from 0 mM to 24 mM (R2 = 0.9993) with a current sensitivity of 25 nA/mM. The combination of porous-structured membrane and the flexible CNT meshes ensures the electrical connections and sensing accuracy of the biosensor under the deformation status. In-vivo experiments showed reliable current responses to variations in blood glucose concentrations that were consistent with tail blood test results. This co-immobilization of enzyme micro-particles in the 3D porous structure method developed a bio-composite platform technology towards the applications in flexible sensing and implantable medical devices.

Abstract:Novel hybrid films based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) nanocomposites were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for chemical and bio-sensing properties. Nickel hexacyanoferrate particles were electrodeposited on the porous CNT thin-film to fabricate electrochemical sensors with improved sensitivity to H2O2. Transmission electron microscopy illustrated the deposition of nickel hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles on the surface of carbon nanotubes. The experimental results show the electrode modified with the hybrid nanocomposite film has higher electrocatalytic activity and stability for detection of H2O2 than the electrodes modified with carbon nanotube or nickel hexacyanoferrate alone. With glucose oxidase (GOx) as an enzyme model, we constructed a biosensor based on the CNTs/NiHCF/GOx nanocomposite. An excellent linear relationship up to 1.2 mM has been obtained with a slope of 5.3 mu A/mM for the glucose biosensor. The response time and detection limit (S/N = 3) of the biosensor was determined to be 10 s and 1 mu M, respectively. The high sensitivity to glucose of the biosensor resulted from the high surface area of carbon nanotubes and excellent electrocatalytic activity of the modifiers. The biosensor also performed with excellent reproducibility and good stability.

Abstract:LiNbO3 nanotubes are prepared by biotemplate-assisted synthetic route. The mesoporous LiNbO3 nanotubes can be an ideal platform to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOx) for glucose biosensing. As the GOx-biocatalyzed oxidation of glucose yield H2O2, and LiNbO3 can direct catalyze the generated H2O2. What's more, one dimensional channels will facilitate the diffusion of reactants and ensure adequate contact between glucose and enzymes. Thus the as-prepared biosensor exhibit high sensitivity (52.4μA·mM−1·cm−2), fast response (<2s) and excellent selectivity to glucose. The results suggest the potential implementation of LiNbO3 as a sensing platform for electrochemical detection of biology reagents.
Biocomposites of covalently linked glucose oxidase on carbon nanotubes for glucose biosensor

Abstract:The formation of covalently linked composites of multi–walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and glucose oxidase (GOD) with high-function density for use as a biosensing interface is described. The reaction intermediates and the final product were characterized by using FT–IR spectroscopy, and the MWCNT-coated GOD nanocomposites were examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Interestingly, it was found that the GOD–MWCNT composites are highly water soluble. Electrochemical characterization of the GOD–MWCNT composites that were modified on a glassy carbon electrode shows that the covalently linked GOD retains its bioactivity and can specifically catalyze the oxidation of glucose. The oxidation current shows a linear dependence on the glucose concentration in the solution in the range of 0.5–40 mM with a detection limit of 30 μM and a detection sensitivity of 11.3 μA/mMcm 2 . The present method may provide a way to synthesize MWCNT related composites with other biomolecules and for the construction of enzymatic reaction-based biofuel cells and biosensors.
Direct Decoration of Carbon Nanohorns with Binary Nickel-Cobalt Sulfide Nanosheets Towards Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensing in Human Fluids

Abstract:A highly controllable, green, and rapid strategy is demonstrated for fabricating of highly sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensing platforms. Carbon nanohorns (CNHs) were decorated onto the screen-printed electrodes. Binary nickel-cobalt sulfide (NiCo-S) nanosheets (NSs) were then deposited on CNH-casted electrodes by a facile and scalable method. Following detailed structural characterization and the electrocatalytic activity of the fabricated NiCo-S/CNH electrodes towards electro-oxidation of glucose was examined in detail. The proposed electrodes operated within two distinct linear dynamic ranges of 0.001- 0.330 mM and 0.330 - 4.53 mM with sensitivities of 1842 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2) and 854 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2), respectively. Analytical sensitivity of 467 mu A.mM(-1).cm(-2), within the linear dynamic range of 0.5 similar to 6 mM, was obtained for the static chronoamperometric measurements. The proposed sensor showed outstanding selectivity against isostructures and co-existing interferences, long-term stability, fast response (1.7 s), excellent poisoning resistance against chloride ions, good repeatability, and high reproducibility. The structural and electrochemical properties of the NiCo-S/CNHs were also compared to its mono-metallic counterparts. Finally, to demonstrate the capability of the fabricated electrodes for glucose measurements in physiological specimens, the glucose level was successfully measured in human blood serum, urine, and saliva samples, without any sample pre-treatment.

Abstract:The development of a glucose sensor that can monitor blood glucose levels is particularly important with the increasing number of diabetes patients. Here, a glucose biosensor based on Nafion (NF), glucose oxidase (GOx), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), hydroxy fullerene (HFs) composite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) is presented. The transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope, UV-Visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods are used to study the characteristics of the modification materials and to evaluate electrochemical properties of the modified electrodes. The heterogeneous electron transfer constant (ks) is calculated to be 4.49 s-1. The response to glucose is linear in the range of 0.02–0.25 mM and 0.25–4.0 mM with a sensitivity of 80.59 μA·mM-1·cm-2 and detection limit (LOD) of 9.93 μM. The NF/MWCNTs-HFs-GOx/GCE biosensor demonstrate high sensitivity to glucose with excellent storage stability and anti-interference capability.

Abstract:A novel biosensor for glucose was prepared by immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx) on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (CNx-MWNTs) modified electrode. The CNx-MWNTs membrane showed an excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of O2 due to its diatomic side-on adsorption on CNx-MWNTs. The nitrogen doping accelerated the electron transfer from electrode surface to the immobilized GOx, leading to the direct electrochemistry of GOx. The biofunctional surface showed good biocompatibility, excellent electron-conductive network and large surface-to-volume ratio, which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle and electrochemical impedance technique. The direct electron transfer of immobilized GOx led to stable amperometric biosensing for glucose with a linear range from 0.02 to 1.02mM and a detection limit of 0.01mM (S/N=3). These results indicated that CNx-MWNTs are good candidate material for construction of the third-generation enzyme biosensors based on the direct electrochemistry of immobilized enzymes.
Electrochemical biosensing platforms using poly-cyclodextrin and carbon nanotube composite.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were “dissolved” in mixed solution of cyclodextrin (CD) and cyclodextrin prepolymer (pre-CDP) and were used as modifier to fabricate chemical modified electrode. The dispersions of CNTs in different solutions were characterized using UV–vis spectrophotometer. The insoluble conducting composite film of poly-cyclodextrin (CDP) and carbon nanotube was synthesized, and glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on the film to fabricate amperometric biosensor. The CNT–CDP electrode was stable. It can keep the exceptional chemical and physical properties of CNTs and the host–guest chemical reaction ability of cyclodextrins. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of potassium ferricyanide solution (50mM, and scan rate 100mVs−1) shows that the CDP film was compact and the CNT–CDP film maintains the electrocatalytic activity of CNT. Glucose oxidase was used as a model enzyme to prepare a glucose biosensor. The bioactivity of immobilized glucose oxidase was maintained due to the biocompatibility of cyclodextrin. Amperometric measurements were done with different concentrations of glucose. The CNT–CDP/GCE–GOx biosensor has wide concentration ranges and good sensitivity to glucose. It showed a detection limit of 3.5μM with a linear range from 0.004 to 3.23mM and from 4.26 to 10.00mM. In addition, the biosensor can be operated under wide pH range (pH 5.6–7.8) without great changes in its sensitivity.

Abstract:Abstract This paper describes a simple electrochemical sensing platform based on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) electrodes for glucose detection. The device fabrication using O 2 -plasma treatment allows precision and uniformity for the construction of three SWCNT electrodes on the flexible plastic substrate. Glucose assay can be simply accomplished by introducing a glucose sample into the fabricated biosensor. The marked electrocatalytic and biocompatible properties of biosensors based on SWCNT electrodes with the incorporation of ferrocenecarboxylic acid and polyethylene glycol enable effective amperometric measurement of glucose at a low oxidation potential (0.3 V) with low interferences from coexisting species. The device shows efficient electroanalytical performances with high sensitivity (5.5 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 ), good reproducibility (CV less than 3%), and long-term stability (over a month). A linear range of response was found from 0 to 10 mM of glucose with a fast response time of 10 s. This attractive electroanalytical device based on GOx/FCA/PEG/SWCNT electrodes offers a promising system to facilitate a new approach for diverse biosensors and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:A bilayer of the polyelectrolytes poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was formed on a 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonic-acid-modified Au electrode. Subsequently, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) wrapped by positively charged PDDA were assembled layer-by-layer with negatively charged glucose oxidase (GOx) onto the PSS-terminated bilayer. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were adopted to monitor the regular growth of the PDDA-MWCNTs/GOx bilayers. Using GOx as a model enzyme, the assembled multilayer membranes showed some striking features such as the adsorbed form of GOx on individual MWCNT, uniformity, good stability, and electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction. Based on the consumption of dissolved oxygen during the oxidation process of glucose catalyzed by the immobilized GOx, a sensitive amperometric biosensor was developed for the detection of glucose up to 5.0mM with a detection limit of 58μM. The sensitivity increased with increasing sensing layers up to five bilayers. Ascorbic acid and uric acid did not cause any interference due to the use of a low operating potential. The present method showed high reproducibility for the fabrication of carbon-nanotubes-based amperometric biosensors.

Abstract:In this study, we describe the construction of glucose biosensors based on an electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. Gold electrodes were initially functionalized with negatively charged 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid followed by alternate immersion in solutions of a positively charged redox polymer, poly[(vinylpyridine)Os(bipyridyl)2Cl(2+/3+)], and a negatively charged enzyme, glucose oxidase (GOX), or a GOX solution containing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The LBL assembly of the multilayer films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and cyclic voltammetry, while characterization of the single-walled nanotubes was performed with transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. When the GOX solution contained single-walled carbon nanotubes (GOX-SWNTs), the oxidation peak currents during cyclic voltammetry increased 1.4-4.0 times, as compared to films without SWNTs. Similarly the glucose electro-oxidation current also increased (6-17 times) when SWNTs were present. By varying the number of multilayers, the sensitivity of the sensors could be controlled.

Abstract:Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) functionalized helical carbon nanotubes (PDDA-HCNTs) were successfully synthesized. The resulting PDDA-HCNTs composite has good conductivity, solubility and ferromagnetic property. The fabricated HCNTs could be conveniently separated and magnetically attached to the magnetic electrode owing to their excellent magnetic properties. An amperometric biosensor was firstly developed based on glucose oxidase (GOD) functionalized PDDA-HCNTs loaded on magnetic glass carbon electrode. The constructed biosensor exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability for the detection of glucose with a linear range from 5 to 85μM and a low detection limit of 0.72μM at 3σ. The present work offers a new avenue to broaden the applications of HCNTs in electrochemical biosensors.
