Abstract:Three series of biphenylporphyrin (BPP) -containing poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) were synthesized and converted into heat-treated polyimides (HPIs) and chemically treated polyimides (CPls). Viscosity measurements, UV-vis and IR spectroscopies, as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were used to characterize the structures of the polymers. UV-vis spectra revealed that the BPP units formed aggregates in PAA and CPI films, rather than in HPI films. Photoinduced discharge was used to characterize the photoconductive properties of these polymer films. It was found that the photosensitivity was greatly enhanced by introducing BPP units into the polymer chains. For these three series of polymers, the photosensitivity increased in the order PAA < HPI < CPI according to the content of BPP in the polymers. The photoconductive characteristics were interpreted by the intrinsic pi - pi* process of BPP aggregation and the extrinsic process of charge-transfer complex formation. The best photoconductive performances of the CPls were attributed to the existence of two charge-carrier-generation processes. (C) 2004 Society of Chemical Industry.

It was found that the initial degradation temperature of the polyimide was more than 530 ��C and it was confirmed by IR analysis that the polyamic acid was completely converted to polyimide after the heat treatment process. The photoconductivity of the P/R system has been improved by the incorporation of phthalocyanine group into the polyimide main chain.

Abstract:A series of polyimide copolymers based on pyromellitic dianhydride, oxydianiline (ODA) and terta(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin were synthesized. The ‘precursors’, copolyamic acids and the copolyimides, were characterised by UV–visible spectra, IR spectra and thermogravimetry. The mole ratios of tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) to diphenylether in the polymers calculated from the UV–visible spectra indicate that TPP and ODA were incorporated into the polymer backbones as expected. To investigate the photoconductivity of the copolyimides (CPIs), three and four-layered photoreceptors containing the CPI films as charge-generating layers were fabricated. It was found that the photosensitivity of the CPIs increased with the incorporation of TPP into the polymer chains. These results were compared with those of tetraphenyl-porphyrin doped pyromellitic/oxydianiline (PMDA/ODA) polyimide and explained on the basis of the formation of charge-transfer complexes.

Enhancing The Photoconductivity Of Polyimides By Incorporating Intrinsic Chromophore Units

Abstract:The formation of charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) between the electron-rich rings and imide units inter- or intra-molecularly generates only a weak photoconductivity in aromatic polyimides (PIs). Unlike the intrinsic photoconductivity of organic materials, in which the free charge carriers are generated from excitation of chromophores and transfer among the chromophores, the photoconductivity originating from the CTCs in the PIs is of extrinsic nature. As the extrinsic photoconductivity in classic aromatic PIs without chromophore is too low for application in practical photoconductor devices, in this study porphyrin rings were incorporated into the PI backbone as chromophore units to enhance its photoconductivity. The photo-induced discharge measurements on photoreceptors in which polyimide films were used as charge carrier generating layers were adopted to characterize the photoconductivity of phorphyrin containing PI. It was shown that the photosensitivity of these porphyrin-containing PI films was greatly improved in comparison to chromophore-free polyimides. Also, it was found that the chemically imidized PI films had a higher photosensitivity than the thermally imidized ones. The enhancement in photoconduction resulted not only from the intrinsic photoconduction process of porphyrin chromophores, but also from the extrinsic photoconduction of CTCs using porphyrin units as electron donors. When the porphyrin containing PI was fabricated into an ordered film by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) process, its photosensitivity was further improved. Furthermore, the aggregation or dispersion of porphyrin units in PI films varied with the fabrication and imidization process of the films, and thus influenced the photoconduction processes and the performance greatly. Besides the porphyrin-containing PI films, their precursor films, including poly(amic acid) spin-coated films and tertiary amine poly(amic acid) salts LB films, were also investigated to reveal the actual photoconduction process of chromophore-containing polymers.

Abstract:Photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) have been developed base on polyimide (PI). PSPI can be used as insulating and protective materials in the microelectronics industry due to the excellent insulating properties, thermal stability, and chemical stability. In this work, we designed a synthetic method to improve the regularity of the polymer chain segment sequence. Quaternary block copolymerized precursors were prepared using condensation polymerization of poly (acid amid). A photosensitive poly (acid amid) salts (co-PAS) was also synthesized to produce patterns with photochemical reaction. After imidization, the resolution of copolymerized PSPI (co-PSPI) pattern was in the range of 16 & mu;m-110 & mu;m. Partial photoreactive cross-linking structure was maintained to improve the thermal stability of co-PSPI. The co-PSPI exhibited higher glass transition temperatures (327.0 & DEG;C-358.8 & DEG;C) than copolymerized PI (307.4 & DEG;C-332.9 & DEG;C). This work provides the study on the synthesis and properties of quaternary copolymerized PI and PSPI.

Abstract:Two novel electrochromic aromatic polyimides (named as TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI, respectively) with pendent benzimidazole group were synthesized from 1,2-Diphenyl-N,N′-di-4-aminophenyl-5-amino-benzimidazole and 4-Amino-4′-aminophenyl-4′′-1-phenyl-benzimidazolyl-phenyl-aniline with 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropane) phthalic anhydride (6FDA) via two-step polymerization process, respectively. Then, polyimide films were prepared on ITO-conductive glass by electrostatic spraying, and their electrochromic properties were studied. The results showed that due to the π-π* transitions, the maximum UV–Vis absorption bands of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were located at about 314 nm and 346 nm, respectively. A pair of reversible redox peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films that were associated with noticeable color changed from original yellow to dark blue and green were observed in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) test. With increasing voltage, new absorption peaks of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films emerged at 755 nm and 762 nm, respectively. The switching/bleaching times of TPA-BIA-PI and TPA-BIB-PI films were 13 s/16 s and 13.9 s/9.5 s, respectively, showing that these polyimides can be used as novel electrochromic materials.

Abstract:Two series of polyimide (PI) copolymer films which contained tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) /diphenyl ether (DPE) units, and TPP/carbazole (Cz) units were respectively fabricated into photoreceptors (PR) as charge-carrier-generating layers (CGL) to investigate their photocondutivities by photoinduced discharge (PID) measurements. It was found that the photocondutivities of these two series PI films increased with the increasing of copolymerized TPP unit. TPP/ DPE unit containing PI films demonstrated better photoconduction than TPP/Cz units contained series when the content of TPP unit was comparable. The photoconduction of TPP unit copolymerized PI films was obviously better than that of tetraphenylporphyrin molecule doped PI films. The charge-barrier-layer of PMMA in PR did could positively effect the photoconduction embodiments. The observations were interpreted on the basis of inherent and non-inherent photoconduction mechanism.
Study on Syntheses and Properties of Some Novel Polyimides Containing Bisthiazole Rings

Abstract:Some novel polyimides containing bisthiazole rings were prepared by reacting 2,2'-diamino-4, 4'-bisthiazole (DART) with different aromatic dianhydride. The polyimides obtained had inherent viscosities of 0.37-0.82 dl/g. Thermogravimetric analysis of the polyimides showed good thermal stability, the temperature at 5% weight loss being from 450 degrees to 560 degrees C. The permeability of two polymer membranes to H-2, O-2 and N-2 was determined, respectively. Three kinds of polyimide films were converted into electrical conductor by pyrolysis at high temperature in nitrogen atmosphere. The maximum room temperature conductivity as high as 3.9x10(2) S/cm for PI him pyrolyzed at 1200 degrees C for 10 min was obtained, and it was very stable in air.

Abstract:The side polyimide containing azobenzene group was synthesized with photochromism property from 2,2-Bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyyphenyl) hexafluoropropane(6FHP),pyromellitic dianhydride(PMDA) and dispersed red 1(DR1).The chemical structure and thermal properties of polyimide were characterized using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR),ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectroscopy,differential scanning calorimeter(DSC),and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The DSC and TGA exhibited the glass transition temperature(Tg) and the decomposition temperature(Td) of polymer were 298 ℃ and 365 ℃,respectively.These results showed that the material had excellent thermal stability.The UV-induced trans/ cis photoisomerization and the thermal reflex-isomerization behavior were investigated for the polymer in solution and in film.The results indicate that the polymer solution and polymer film can undergo photochromism after a given UV wavelength (365 nm) photoinduction.This showed that the polyimide could be used to carry out perpetuity photoinduced birefringence and recording.

Abstract:A series of porphyrin-containing polyimide (PI) photocatalysts were synthesized by a one-step solvothermal method. Characterization results revealed that porphyrin was uniformly coupled into the PI framework through covalent bonding and the visible-light absorption was greatly improved. The photodegradation activity of porphyrin-containing PIs for methyl orange (MO) under visible light was enhanced significantly, with the highest pseudo-first-order rate constant 35 times higher than that of neat porphyrin and 10 times higher than that of porphyrin-free PI. The enhancement is mainly attributed to an increased light harvesting accompanied by a varied HOMO level, which was clarified by control experiments, characterizations and theoretical calculations. This work provides an insight into multiple effects of dye molecules in dye-containing heterogeneous photocatalysts.

Abstract:Three‐dimensional polyimides constructed by four triphenylamines increase solubility and hinder mechanical respiration. In addition, visible–near infrared dual‐band electrochromism is obtained. The PI with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (48%) can be used for trinitrophenol detection. By using triphenylamine (TPA) with a propeller structure connected to the planar fluorene unit as monomer, three novel polyimide (PI)s were prepared through chemical imidization of N,N′‐(9,9‐bis(4‐(diphenylamino) phenyl)‐9H‐fluorene‐2,7‐diyl)‐bis(N‐(4‐methoxyphenyl) benzene‐1,4‐diamine) (TPAF‐NH2) with three kinds of dianhydrides. The three dimensional configurations are designed to decrease molecular stacking rising from strong imide bond, and for faster ion transport in cavity of PIs. All the three PIs have good performance of electrochromic(EC) and sensor. With the voltage increasing from 0 to 1.2 V, the color of P2 film changes from original yellow to red to blue with the response time of only 2.3 s (colored time [tc]) and 2.8 s (bleached time [tb]). The coloring efficiency (CE) of P2 reaches 310 cm2 C−1, with optical contrast (ΔT) of 54%. Especially, the electroactivity of P3 does not decrease significantly after 6000 s cycle. Additionally, there are dual‐band in near‐infrared (NIR) area after the PI being oxidized. P1 with photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency (φPL) of 48% can detect trinitrophenol (TNP) effectively. The novel PIs have promising prospect in NIR EC and TNP detection devices.

Abstract:A new aromatic diamine bearing ether and pendant 9(10H)-anthrone groups, 10,10-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]-9(10H)-anthrone was reacted with various aromatic dianhydrides to yield the corresponding cardo polyimides via the poly(amic acid) (PAA) precursors and thermal or chemical imidization. The PAAs were produced with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.91–1.53 dL/g. All the PAAs could be cast from DMAc solution and thermally converted into transparent, flexible and tough polyimide films with tensile strength of 79.6–115.2 MPa, tensile modulus of 1.97–2.48 GPa, and elongation at break of 10.8–21.7%. These polyimides were predominantly amorphous, and displayed excellent thermal stability with glass-transition temperature of 290–359 °C, 10% weight loss temperature of 522–566 °C, and the residue of 59–65% at 800 °C in nitrogen. Most of the polyimides obtained by chemical cyclodehydration procedure were found to be soluble in NMP, DMF and mcresol at room temperature.

Abstract:Cu-dinitro-diamino phthalocyanine was synthesized and converted to the diazonium salt. Polyacrylamide bonded CuPc(NO2)2 [PAA-CuPc(NO2)2] (I) was synthesized by hot polymerization of acrylamide and this diazonium salt. Polymer(I) is water soluble and contains about 7 mol % CuPc(NO2)2 rings, which are covalently bonded to PAA. Polymer(I) shows good photoconductivity, which is much better than that of the corresponding phthalocyanine monomers. By doping with iodine (I2), the photosensitivity of polymer(I) is increased, which through fluorescence analysis is explained by the fact that a charge-transfer complex (CTC) of polymer(I) with I2 is formed. The influence of interface layer (IFL) and charge-transportation material (CTM) on the photoconductivity of polymer(I) were also studied.

Abstract:A polyimide containing phthalein groups and hydroxyl side-groups was synthesized. In the synthesis, a new diamine monomer containing phenolphthalein group was prepared by nitrification of phenolphthalein and followed with further reduction. The polyimide was obtained by polycondensation of the diamine monomer with 4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidinedi(phtalic anhydride) (6FDA) and subsequent high temperature imidization step. The chemical structure of the monomer and polyimide was characterized by H-1-NMR and FTIR. GPC test gives the molecular weight (M-n) and polydispersity of the polyimide of 15500 and 2.47, respectively. The polyimide shows no obvious T-g in the range of 100 similar to 350 degrees C and a T-d of 388 degrees C with 2.5% mass loss by thermal analysis (DSC and TGA). The polymer has good solubility in sonic aprotic polar organic solvents such as DMF, DMAc, etc. but is insoluble in weak polar organic solvents such as toluene. The UV-Vis transmittance and absorbance spectra show that the polyimide possesses good optically transparency in the visible region. For its aromatic hydroxyl side-groups containing structure, the polyimide can be further used as a precursor of high performance functional materials.

Abstract:A series of solution-processable and photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) coatings with enhanced high-temperature dimensional stability were designed, synthesized and characterized. For this purpose, the rigid-rod benzanilide (Ph − CONH − Ph) units with methyl substituents were incorporated into the molecular structures of an intrinsically auto-photosensitive PSPI system via the two-step chemical imidization copolymerization of a specially designed aromatic diamine, 2,3'-dimethyl-4,4'- diaminobenzanilide (MMDABA) and an aromatic dianhydride, 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), together with an aromatic diamine, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TMMDA). The ortho-substituted methyl group in MMDABA, on one hand, was designed to guarantee the solubility of the derived PSPI resins in the organic solvents; and on the other hand, maintain the intrinsic photosensitivity of the pristine PSPI (BTDA-TMMDA, PSPI-1). Meanwhile, the rigid benzanilide unit was applied to reduce the coefficients of thermal expansions (CTE) of the derived PSPI coatings. Four PSPI copolymers with the TMMDA/MMDABA (molar ratio) of 95/5 (PSPI-2), 90/10 (PSPI-3), 85/15 (PSPI-4), and 80/20 (PSPI-5) were prepared. The derived PSPI resins were all soluble in polar aprotic solvents of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). All the PSPI coatings maintained good photosensitivity to the ultraviolet (UV) light (UV-A, 320 ~ 460 nm) except PSPI-5, indicating the deterioration of the photosensitivity of the polymers by incorporation of MMDABA units. Incorporation of MMDABA units into the PSPI systems basically maintained the thermal stability of the polymers, while apparently increased the dimensional stability of the coatings at elevated temperatures. PSPI-5 possessed the CTE value of 42 × 10–6/K in the temperature range of 50 to 300 °C, which was obviously lower than that of the pristine PSPI-1 system (CTE = 56 × 10–6/K).

Abstract:A fluorinated diamine, (2,5-bis(4-amino-3-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl)diphenyl-phosphine oxide ( 2 ), was synthesized via Williamson reaction and hydrogenation. A series of polyimides with side diphenylphosphine oxide and trifluoromethyl groups were prepared by the high-temperature one-pot polymerization of diamine 2 with several commercial aromatic dianhydrides. The resulting PIs exhibit excellent solubility in common organic solvents (i.e., tetrahydrofuran, trichloromethane etc.) and are easily processed into light color transparent films (thickness: 20 ± 1 μm) through the blade-coating method. The transmittance of PI films is above 86% in the visible light region (400—760 nm). They also show good thermal stability with the glass transition temperatures from 246 to 286 °C. The limiting oxygen index values of them exceed 38.3%. At the same time, they display the low water absorption (0.89—1.32%) and good mechanical properties (tensile strength: 72.3—153.24 MPa, Young's modulus: 1.4—2.3 GPa, elongation at break: 6.9—12.5%). They are promising candidates for advanced flame-retardant and optical film materials.
