Abstract:The formation of charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) between the electron-rich rings and imide units inter- or intra-molecularly generates only a weak photoconductivity in aromatic polyimides (PIs). Unlike the intrinsic photoconductivity of organic materials, in which the free charge carriers are generated from excitation of chromophores and transfer among the chromophores, the photoconductivity originating from the CTCs in the PIs is of extrinsic nature. As the extrinsic photoconductivity in classic aromatic PIs without chromophore is too low for application in practical photoconductor devices, in this study porphyrin rings were incorporated into the PI backbone as chromophore units to enhance its photoconductivity. The photo-induced discharge measurements on photoreceptors in which polyimide films were used as charge carrier generating layers were adopted to characterize the photoconductivity of phorphyrin containing PI. It was shown that the photosensitivity of these porphyrin-containing PI films was greatly improved in comparison to chromophore-free polyimides. Also, it was found that the chemically imidized PI films had a higher photosensitivity than the thermally imidized ones. The enhancement in photoconduction resulted not only from the intrinsic photoconduction process of porphyrin chromophores, but also from the extrinsic photoconduction of CTCs using porphyrin units as electron donors. When the porphyrin containing PI was fabricated into an ordered film by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) process, its photosensitivity was further improved. Furthermore, the aggregation or dispersion of porphyrin units in PI films varied with the fabrication and imidization process of the films, and thus influenced the photoconduction processes and the performance greatly. Besides the porphyrin-containing PI films, their precursor films, including poly(amic acid) spin-coated films and tertiary amine poly(amic acid) salts LB films, were also investigated to reveal the actual photoconduction process of chromophore-containing polymers.
