Abstract:The Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers of a copolyimide incorporating both copper-phthalocyanine and carbazole as electron donors were fabricated into a dual-layer photoreceptor as the charge-generating layer( CGL). The photoconductive properties of this photoreceptor were studied by photoinduced discharge measurement and compared with a reference photoreceptor in which the charge-generating layer was a solvent-casting film of the copolyimide. It was found that the photoreceptor consisting the copolyimide LB multilayers have the advantages of high photosensitivity, low residual potential, and high photodischarge rate. It was explained on the basis of the stacked molecule packing and charge-transfer complexes formation in the LB multilayers. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:A series of polyimide copolymers based, on pyromellitic dianhydride, 3,6-diaminocarbazole, and terta(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin were synthesized. The "precursors", copolyamic acids, and the copolyimides were characterized by IR, UV-visible, and emission spectra and thermogravimetry. The mole ratios of tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) to carbazole (Cz)in the polymers calculated from the UV-visible spectra indicate that TPP and Ct were incorporated into the polymer backbones as expected. The copolyimide films were fabricated into bilayer photoreceptors as a charge-generating layer to investigate their photoconductivity. It was found that the photosensitivity of the copolyimides increases with the incorporation of TPP into the polymer chains. These results were compared with those of the tetraphenylporphyrin-doped pyromellitic/3,6-diaminocarbazole polyimide film and explained on the basis of charge-transfer complex formation.

Abstract:Using Cu-phthalocyanine (CuPc), 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether and pyromellitic dianhydride as monomer materials, polyimide(PI) thin films doped-CuPc have been prepared onto glass substrate by vapor phase co-deposition polymerization under a vacuum of 2 × 10-3 Pa and thermal curing of polyamic acid film in at temperature of 150-200 C for 60 min. In this process, the polymerization can be carried out through controlling the stoichiometric ratio, heating time and deposition rates of the three monomers. IR spectrum identifies the designed chemical structure of the polymer. The absorption of polyimide doped-CuPc is very intense in vis-range and near-infrared by UV-Vis spectrum. And, the PI films doped-CuPc polymerized by vapor phase deposition have uniformity, fine thermal stability and good nonlinear optical properties, and the third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility x(2) with degenerate four-wave mixing can be 1. 984 × 10-9 ESU.

Abstract:The formation of charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) between the electron-rich rings and imide units inter- or intra-molecularly generates only a weak photoconductivity in aromatic polyimides (PIs). Unlike the intrinsic photoconductivity of organic materials, in which the free charge carriers are generated from excitation of chromophores and transfer among the chromophores, the photoconductivity originating from the CTCs in the PIs is of extrinsic nature. As the extrinsic photoconductivity in classic aromatic PIs without chromophore is too low for application in practical photoconductor devices, in this study porphyrin rings were incorporated into the PI backbone as chromophore units to enhance its photoconductivity. The photo-induced discharge measurements on photoreceptors in which polyimide films were used as charge carrier generating layers were adopted to characterize the photoconductivity of phorphyrin containing PI. It was shown that the photosensitivity of these porphyrin-containing PI films was greatly improved in comparison to chromophore-free polyimides. Also, it was found that the chemically imidized PI films had a higher photosensitivity than the thermally imidized ones. The enhancement in photoconduction resulted not only from the intrinsic photoconduction process of porphyrin chromophores, but also from the extrinsic photoconduction of CTCs using porphyrin units as electron donors. When the porphyrin containing PI was fabricated into an ordered film by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) process, its photosensitivity was further improved. Furthermore, the aggregation or dispersion of porphyrin units in PI films varied with the fabrication and imidization process of the films, and thus influenced the photoconduction processes and the performance greatly. Besides the porphyrin-containing PI films, their precursor films, including poly(amic acid) spin-coated films and tertiary amine poly(amic acid) salts LB films, were also investigated to reveal the actual photoconduction process of chromophore-containing polymers.

Abstract:The side polyimide containing azobenzene group was synthesized with photochromism property from 2,2-Bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyyphenyl) hexafluoropropane(6FHP),pyromellitic dianhydride(PMDA) and dispersed red 1(DR1).The chemical structure and thermal properties of polyimide were characterized using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR),ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectroscopy,differential scanning calorimeter(DSC),and thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA).The DSC and TGA exhibited the glass transition temperature(Tg) and the decomposition temperature(Td) of polymer were 298 ℃ and 365 ℃,respectively.These results showed that the material had excellent thermal stability.The UV-induced trans/ cis photoisomerization and the thermal reflex-isomerization behavior were investigated for the polymer in solution and in film.The results indicate that the polymer solution and polymer film can undergo photochromism after a given UV wavelength (365 nm) photoinduction.This showed that the polyimide could be used to carry out perpetuity photoinduced birefringence and recording.

Abstract:In this paper, three kinds of triphenyl imidazole-containing diamines including 2-phenyl-4,5-bis(4-(4-amino-2-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl)imidazole (PBAI), 2-(4-methylphenyl)-4,5-bis(4-(4-amino-2-trifluoromethyl phenoxy)phenyl)imidazole (MPBAI) and 2-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4,5-bis(4-(4-amino-2-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl)imidazole (TFPBAI) were synthesized. Then, a series of polyimide (PI) films were prepared by the solution polymerization of the three diamines and various dianhydrides, such as 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), 1,2,4,5-pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride (CBDA), followed by thermal imidization. The effects of chemical structures on the solubilities and thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of polyimides were explored. All the polyimides exhibited higher glass transition temperatures around 300 °C and excellent solubilities in common polar solvents. The polyimide films derived from CBDA or 6FDA showed better optical properties with light color and transparent characteristics. The fluorescence test showed that the photoluminescence color of CBDA-based polyimide films is in the blue range in the CIE 1931 spectrum, while the polyimide film based on PMDA and 6FDA presented black or weak yellow light. However, all these polyimides in solution exhibited similar blue luminescence. Electrochemical tests indicated that the HOMO and LUMO values of these films were around -6.5 and -3.6 eV, and the energy gap difference was about 3.0 eV. Therefore, the triphenyl imidazole-containing polyimides exhibit comprehensive performance, which will be expected as a new kind of functional material for certain application in the optical and optoelectronics fields.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hetero-multilayer films with good photoconductive properties are expected to be useful in a wide variety of devices, and can be prepared by different techniques. A new organic-inorganic composite CuPc/ZnS (where Pc is phthalocyanine) multilayer film was prepared by vacuum sublimation. The influence of substrate temperature, layer stack number and layer thickness on the structural, optical and photoconductive properties of CuPc/ZnS multilayer films was investigated by atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and surface potential decay measurements. It was concluded that the 150 degreesC-deposited three-pair CuPc/ZnS multilayer with a thickness of 0.1 mum for both CuPc and ZnS layers had the best photoconductive property with a light sensitivity of S = 62.5 lx s under white incident light, and had the ideal multilayer structure with good heterostructural compatibility, interfacial coherence and oriented crystallization, which was preferable for potential applications in photoelectric conversion film-related devices compared with single-layer CuPc films. It was speculated that the charge carrier photogeneration occurred in the CuPc layer, and the ZnS layer provided the role of transportation of electrons in plane after charge separation at interfaces in the CuPc/ZnS multilayer film.

Abstract:Three series of biphenylporphyrin (BPP) -containing poly(amic acid)s (PAAs) were synthesized and converted into heat-treated polyimides (HPIs) and chemically treated polyimides (CPls). Viscosity measurements, UV-vis and IR spectroscopies, as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were used to characterize the structures of the polymers. UV-vis spectra revealed that the BPP units formed aggregates in PAA and CPI films, rather than in HPI films. Photoinduced discharge was used to characterize the photoconductive properties of these polymer films. It was found that the photosensitivity was greatly enhanced by introducing BPP units into the polymer chains. For these three series of polymers, the photosensitivity increased in the order PAA < HPI < CPI according to the content of BPP in the polymers. The photoconductive characteristics were interpreted by the intrinsic pi - pi* process of BPP aggregation and the extrinsic process of charge-transfer complex formation. The best photoconductive performances of the CPls were attributed to the existence of two charge-carrier-generation processes. (C) 2004 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The ultrathin conductive films were prepared by pyrolysis of photosensitive polyimide LB films at 1000-degrees-C in hydrogen atmosphere. The conductivity of these pyrolzed LB films increased with the film thickness and reached the stable value of 180 s cm-1. The pyrolyzed LB films on the silicon dioxide substrate were studied by scanning tunneling microscope.

Abstract:A series of copolyimide Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films with different chemical structure was fabricated into xerographic photoreceptors and its electrophotographic properties were measured by photoinduced discharge method. Comparison was made between the LB films and the corresponding 1μm solvent-cast films. It was found that the copolyimide LB films have the advantage of high electrophotographic performance. The results could be ascribed to charge-transfer complexes formation, nanometer film thickness, compact molecular packing and chain alignment in the copolyimide LB films.

Abstract:The photosensitive 1-(3-aminophenyl)-3-(4-aminophenyl)-2-propen-1-one was prepared using the materials 3-acetylacetanilide and 4-acetamidobenzaldehyde through two steps of reaction.The corresponding photosensitive polyimide was synthesized by solution polymerization and chemically conversion.The purity was 99.92% by the analysis of HPLC and the maximal absorption wavelength of uv-vis spectrum was 349nm.The heat-resist temperature of photosensitive polyimide was over 400℃ with the maximal absorption wavelength of uv-vis spectrum 365nm.The method had the advantages of cheapness,high yield and easy operation.Elemental analysis,HNMR and IR were used to characterize the target compounds.

Abstract:New photoconductive materials are explored from three groups of polyacetylenes: poly(phenylacetylenes) -[HC=C(C6H5-p-R)](n)-, poly(3-thienylacetylenes) -[HC=C(3-C4H2S-beta-R')](n)-, and poly(1-alkynes) -{HC-C[(CH2)(m)R "]}(n)-, where R = CH3 (2), CO2(CH2)(6)OCO-Biph-OC7H15 (Biph = 4,4'-biphenylyl; 3); R' = Si(CH3)(3) (4), Br (5); and R " = CO2(CH2)(6)OCO-Biph-OC9H19 (m = 2; 6), 9-carbazolyl (m = 3; 7) and OCO-Biph-OC7H15 (m = 9; 8). Photoconduction in the polyacetylenes under illumination of visible light is investigated using photoinduced xerographic discharge technique. In the pure (undoped) state, all the polyacetylenes except 5 show higher photosensitivity than do poly(phenylacetylene) (R = H; 1), a well-studied photoconducting polyacetylene, and poly(9-vinylcarbazole), the best-known photoconducting vinyl polymer. Among the polyacetylenes, photoconduction performance of the polymers with electron-donating and/or hole-transporting moieties is superior to those with electron-accepting ones. The liquid crystalline polymer 6 exhibits very high photosensitivity, probably due to the formation of crystalline aggregates of its mesogenic pendants induced by the thermal treatment in the photoreceptor preparation process. C-60 acts as a photoconductivity enhancer when doped tal amorphous 3, but functions as a crystallinity-breaking plasticizer when doped to liquid crystalline g, leading to a large decrease in photoconductivity. While 3 shows a low photosensitivity (2.8 x 10(-3) 1x(-1) s(-1)) to a 573 nm light in the undoped state, doping with I-2 and sensitization with crystal violet (CV) dramatically increase its photosensitivity (up to 41.2 x 10(-3) 1x(-1) s(-1)). The CV-sensitized 4 exhibits high photoconductivity in the near-infrared spectral region, which may find technological applications in the digital photoimaging systems.
Study on Photoconduction Properties of Polyimide Films Containing Tetraphenylporphyrin Units

Abstract:Two series of polyimide (PI) copolymer films which contained tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) /diphenyl ether (DPE) units, and TPP/carbazole (Cz) units were respectively fabricated into photoreceptors (PR) as charge-carrier-generating layers (CGL) to investigate their photocondutivities by photoinduced discharge (PID) measurements. It was found that the photocondutivities of these two series PI films increased with the increasing of copolymerized TPP unit. TPP/ DPE unit containing PI films demonstrated better photoconduction than TPP/Cz units contained series when the content of TPP unit was comparable. The photoconduction of TPP unit copolymerized PI films was obviously better than that of tetraphenylporphyrin molecule doped PI films. The charge-barrier-layer of PMMA in PR did could positively effect the photoconduction embodiments. The observations were interpreted on the basis of inherent and non-inherent photoconduction mechanism.

Abstract:A series of polyimide copolymers based on pyromellitic dianhydride, oxydianiline (ODA) and terta(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin were synthesized. The ‘precursors’, copolyamic acids and the copolyimides, were characterised by UV–visible spectra, IR spectra and thermogravimetry. The mole ratios of tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) to diphenylether in the polymers calculated from the UV–visible spectra indicate that TPP and ODA were incorporated into the polymer backbones as expected. Abstract:A polyimide containing main-chain chalcone groups and hydroxyl side-groups was synthesized. In the synthesis, 1,3-dioxoisobenzofuran-5-carbonyl chloride was obtained by the reaction between 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic anhydride and SOCl2. 1,3-Bis(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenyl) prop-2-en-1-one was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction between 2-chloroethanol and 1,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-prop-2-en-1-one, which was synthesized from the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone. The new dianhydride monomer containing chalcone group was prepared by reaction between 1,3-dioxoisobenzofuran-5-carbonyl chloride and 1,3-bis(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one. The polyimide was obtained by polycondensation of the dianhydride monomer with 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane and subsequent thermo imidization. The chemical structure and properties of the polyimide were characterized by H-1-NMR, FTIR, GPC and thermal analysis. The number average molecular weight (M-n) of the polyimide is 27310 with a polydispersity index of 1.55. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the polyimide is 207 degrees C obtained from the DSC thermogram. The thermal degradation temperature (T-d) is 382 degrees C measured at the point with a weight loss of 2.5% from the thermogravimetric curve. The polymer shows good solubility in aprotic polar organic solvents such as DMF, DMAc and THF. The polyimide has an absorption maximum at 342 nm due to the chalcone group. Upon the UV light irradiation, the polyimide can undergo sensitive [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction. After UV light irradiation with the dose of 20 J/cm(2), the absorbance band at 342 nm disappears completely, and the film is insoluble in DMF. The polyimide synthesized in this work can be expected for applications as photoimagable materials and others.
