Abstract:A frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) using tandem Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) biased at the peak transmission point is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Multifunctional operations of nearly chirp-free frequency-doubled optical clock (FD-OC) recovery, low-duty-cycle prescaled OC recovery and error-free fourfold demultiplexing of a 100-Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) signal are achieved simultaneously with the proposed FD-OEO composed of low-frequency devices. As an intrinsic property, prescaled electrical clock (EC) with 167.15-fs root-mean-square (RMS) timing jitter is extracted.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

Abstract:A novel multifunctional frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) mainly based on a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) cascaded with a phase modulator (PM) and a subsequent optical bandpass filter (OBPF) is proposed. We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous operations of frequency-doubled optical clock (FD-OC) recovery, low-duty-cycle dual-wavelength prescaled OC recovery and error-free fourfold time division demultiplexing with the proposed OEO injected with a 4 × 25-Gb/s optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. We show that the proposed FD-OEO operates well for both the differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and on-off keying (OOK) modulation formats. The extracted dual-wavelength prescaled OC is proved to be nearly transform-limited with Gaussian-like shape. Furthermore, all four 25-Gb/s tributaries can be selectively demultiplexed by adjusting the phase shifters in the OEO loop. The power penalty at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-9) is measured to be 2.4 dB, 1.2 dB for the best channel for DPSK signal and to be 2.5 dB, 1.1 dB for the best channel for OOK signal. In addition, as an extra benefit of the OEO, low-phase-noise prescaled electrical clock (EC) is also extracted.

Abstract:A novel optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) based on four-wave-mixing in optical fibers and optical voltage-controlled oscillator (OVCO) is proposed and built to perform clock recovery in optical time-division multiplexed systems. The operation principle of the optical phase-locked loop and the configurations and functions of modules in optical phase-locked loop are analyzed theoretically. With the use of highly-nonlinear fibers in all-optical phase detector, the fiber length is shortened sufficiently, which reduces the walk-off between two pulse trains induced by dispersion. The phase detector has an extinction ratio beyond 30 dB. The optical voltage-controlled oscillator based on regenerative mode-locked fiber laser provides high-quality pulses over a repetition frequency range of 380 kHz. In the clock recovery experiment, a transform-limited pulse train is recovered from a 40 Gb/s signal, with pulse width of 7.2 ps, timing jitter (root-mean-square) of 152 fs, and super-mode suppression ratio over 60 dB. The loop is robust against pattern effect and amplitude fluctuation of input signal.

Abstract:A novel clock recovery scheme using two-ring injection mode-locked fiber ring laser based on all 10 GHz bandwidth components was demonstrated. With this scheme, the clock with low timing jitter was obtained from a degraded 10 Gb/s optical data stream. Optical clock recovery was also achieved from a degraded 20 Gb/s optical data train when the clock division technique in the opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) and the rational harmonic mode-locking technique in the fiber ring laser were applied. No pattern effect was observed in the experiments.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery is one of the key techniques for achieving ultra high-speed optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Here we propose a novel all-optical scheme of using a mode-locked fiber ring to extract the same-frequency and subharmonic-frequency clock pulses from the uneven multiplexing optical signal. We have successively extracted the 10 GHz optical clock pulses from 2 x 10 Gbit/s OTDM signal. The technique can be used in high-speed OTDM communication systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate 40 Gb/s all-optical clock recovery by using a monolithic integrated amplified-feedback laser (AFL) with coherent injection-locked method. The AFL consists of a gain-coupled DFB laser and an optical amplified feedback external cavity. With proper design and operation of AFL, the device can work at self-pulsation state that resulted from the beating between two lasing modes. The self-pulsation can be injection-locked to the optical clock embedded in input data streams. Due to different work mechanisms, there are two all-optical clock recovery operation modes: incoherent injection-locked and coherent injection-locked. It's predicted that the coherent injection method has various advantages: 1) requiring low injection power recovery, 2) independent of the bit rate and 3) introducing little timing jitter to the recovered clock. The robustness of coherent clock recovery is confirmed by our experimental results. We set up a return-to-zero (RZ) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) data streams all-optical clock recovery system. This coherent injection-locked based clock recovery method is optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion (CD) degeneration tolerant, and has low timing jitter and high sensitivity.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel self-clocking based on in-band phase-modulated pilot insertion and extraction for ultra-high speed optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) signals. The clock recovery function is realized by inserting at the transmitter and extracting at the receiver an in-band phase-modulated pilot that is located in the data spectrum, which eliminates the need for an ultra-fast phase comparator and a phase-locked loop in the receiver. Experimental results show the clock can be successfully extracted from 160 Gbit/s OTDM data signal and employed for demultiplexing of 40Gbit/s tributaries. The self-clocking leads to fast synchronization, low timing jitter and highly stable recovered clock, which introduces 1.5 dB of power penalty with an error-free performance. The proposed method simplifies the design of an OTDM receiver and requires minor modifications of the standard OTDM transmitter.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated 100-GHz wavelength tunable clock recovery from 100-Gb/s RZ-OOK signal utilizing a wavelength-converter based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), followed by a Fabry–Perot (FP) filter and a subsequent SOA equalizer. Wavelength-tunable 100-GHz optical clock extraction has been demonstrated from 1542nm to 1565nm. Stable optical clocks with a timing jitter of ~250fs, a pulsewidth of ~3ps, and an amplitude fluctuation of less than 10% were obtained for all the wavelengths.
