Abstract:With a high instantaneous luminosity and the large top quark pair production cross section, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a "top factory" allowing the analysis of millions of top events. After a short description of the top quark pair production mechanism and the cross section measurement, the accuracy of the top mass measurement needed for a sound consistency check of the Standard Model is briefly discussed. Different top mass measurement methods are presented. The observability of the single top quark production is described. Finally the observation of the Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark pair is discussed.

Abstract:Recent measurements of the properties of the top quark at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are discussed. The results were measured for single and top quark pair production in their final states, including jets with either one or two leptons or only in hadronic final states. Top quark properties include angular correlations, top quark spin correlations, mass, and width. When looking towards the future, top quark properties open new and even interdisciplinary avenues for probing quantum information science.

Abstract:Searches for new physics in the top quark sector are of great theoretical interest, yet some powerful avenues for discovery remain unexplored. We characterize the expected statistical power of the LHC dataset to constrain the single production of heavy top partners T decaying to a top quark and a photon or a top quark and a gluon. We describe an effective interaction which could generate such production, though the limits apply to a range of theoretical models. We find sensitivity to cross sections in the 10 2 − 10 5 fb range, for T masses between 300 and 1000 GeV, depending on decay mode.

Abstract:The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle and plays a special role in the dynamics of fundamental interactions. Since its discovery at the Tevatron, several of its properties have been measured by the Tevatron experiments (CDF and DZERO). However, thanks to its unprecedentedly large production rate at the LHC a new level of precision in these measurements has been achieved by the LHC experiments (ATLAS and CMS). The latest LHC measurements of the top quark mass, total decay width, top-antitop spin correlations, and charge asymmetry are presented in this contribution. In addition, the results from the W-boson helicity measurement are presented.

Quark flavour physics: status and future prospects

Abstract:Quark flavour physics is the study of hadrons, their properties, and their decays into other particles. As a discipline it simultaneously catalogues the nature of physical states within the Standard Model of particle physics, and in doing so tests the consistency and completeness of the Standard Model's description of reality. Following the discovery of the Higgs field, it is more essential than ever to critically examine the Standard Model's own coherence. Precision studies of quark flavour are one of the most sensitive experimental instruments for this task. I give a brief and necessarily selective overview of recent developments in quark flavour physics and discuss prospects for the next generation of experiments and facilities, with an emphasis on the energy scales of beyond Standard Model physics probed by these types of measurements.

Abstract:After the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the investigation of its properties and compatibility with the standard model predictions is central to the physics program of the LHC experiments. Likewise, the study of the top quark is still relevant at the LHC, more than two decades after its discovery at the Tevatron. Top quarks and Higgs bosons are produced at the LHC on a large scale and share a deep connection based on the large mass of the top quark. Both particles provide an excellent laboratory in which to search for new physics: the measurement of their properties tests the foundations of the standard model; and they feature prominently in a variety of exotic signals. The coupling of the Higgs boson to the top quark, a fundamental standard model parameter, can only be measured directly in processes where the two particles are produced together. The production of a Higgs boson together with one or two top quarks is also sensitive to several exciting new physics effects. A brief overview of the current experimental status of top quark and Higgs boson physics is presented using results from the CMS Collaboration.

Abstract:We discuss the various ways in which primordial black holes may have formed in the early Universe and how the effects of such black holes can be used to place constraints on cosmological models. We show that such constraints may be severely modified if the value of the gravitational "constant" G varies with cosmological epoch, a possibility which arises in many scenarios for the early Universe. The nature of the modification depends upon whether the value of G near a black hole maintains the value it had at its formation epoch (corresponding to gravitational memory) or whether it tracks the background cosmological value. This is still uncertain but we discuss various approaches which might help to resolve the issue.
