Abstract:The top-quark mass is a parameter of paramount importance in particle physics, playing a crucial role in the electroweak precision tests and in the stability of the Standard Model vacuum. I will discuss the main strategies to extract the top-quark mass at the LHC and the interpretation of the measurements in terms of well-posed top-mass definitions, taking particular care about renormalon ambiguities, progress in Monte Carlo event generators for top physics and theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract:The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle and plays a special role in the dynamics of fundamental interactions. Since its discovery at the Tevatron, several of its properties have been measured by the Tevatron experiments (CDF and DZERO). However, thanks to its unprecedentedly large production rate at the LHC a new level of precision in these measurements has been achieved by the LHC experiments (ATLAS and CMS). The latest LHC measurements of the top quark mass, total decay width, top-antitop spin correlations, and charge asymmetry are presented in this contribution. In addition, the results from the W-boson helicity measurement are presented.

Abstract:Searches for new physics in the top quark sector are of great theoretical interest, yet some powerful avenues for discovery remain unexplored. We characterize the expected statistical power of the LHC dataset to constrain the single production of heavy top partners T decaying to a top quark and a photon or a top quark and a gluon. We describe an effective interaction which could generate such production, though the limits apply to a range of theoretical models. We find sensitivity to cross sections in the 10 2 − 10 5 fb range, for T masses between 300 and 1000 GeV, depending on decay mode.

Abstract:A summary of the on-going preparations from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations to perform top quark physics in Run II of the LHC and at the HL-LHC is given. To maintain the current level of precision and profit from the high-luminosity scenario expected in the next runs of the LHC, several new reconstruction techniques and detector upgrades are foreseen. The prospects for precise measurements and possible discovery stories for new physics with top quarks are summarized.

Abstract:At the time of the 10th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics (TOP2017), top quark physics is a very dynamic research area. Thanks to the unprecedentedly fast accumulation of high-energy data at the LHC during the ongoing Run~2, statistical starvation is a matter of the past for most of the traditional top-quark analyses, that are now experiencing the luxury of having to worry about how to punch through the "Systematics Wall" and maximize the utility of their data. New processes involving top quarks are being studied for the first time, and the good old pair-production processes are being explored in unusual settings, such as collisions involving heavy ions, or "reference data" collected by the LHC at relatively low centre-of-mass energy. The TOP2017 conference featured 37 talks delivered by experimental physicists, including seven in the "Young Scientists Forum" where young colleagues were given the opportunity to elaborate more deeply than usual on their own work. As it is impossible to do justice to all the experimental results presented at this conference while staying within a reasonable length, this document contains a very biased selection, mostly based on the personal taste of the author.

Abstract:With a high instantaneous luminosity and the large top quark pair production cross section, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a "top factory" allowing the analysis of millions of top events. After a short description of the top quark pair production mechanism and the cross section measurement, the accuracy of the top mass measurement needed for a sound consistency check of the Standard Model is briefly discussed. Different top mass measurement methods are presented. The observability of the single top quark production is described. Finally the observation of the Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark pair is discussed.

Abstract:We discuss the various ways in which primordial black holes may have formed in the early Universe and how the effects of such black holes can be used to place constraints on cosmological models. We show that such constraints may be severely modified if the value of the gravitational "constant" G varies with cosmological epoch, a possibility which arises in many scenarios for the early Universe. The nature of the modification depends upon whether the value of G near a black hole maintains the value it had at its formation epoch (corresponding to gravitational memory) or whether it tracks the background cosmological value. This is still uncertain but we discuss various approaches which might help to resolve the issue.

Abstract:The large top-quark samples collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC have yielded measurements of the inclusive \ttbar production cross section of unprecedented precision and differential measurements in new kinematic regimes.They have also enabled new measurements of top-quark properties that were previously inaccessible, enabled the observation of many rare top-quark production processes predicted by the Standard Model and boosted searches for flavour-changing-neutral-current interactions of the top-quark, that are heavily suppressed in the SM. In this contribution the highlights of the ATLAS top-quark physics program are presented, as well as projections of the expected sensitivity after the High Luminosity phase of the LHC. Abstract:The top quark and electroweak bosons (W and Z) represent the most massive fundamental particles yet discovered, and as such refer directly to the Standard Model's greatest remaining mystery: the mechanism by which all particles gained mass. This report summarizes the work done within the top-ew group of the Tevatron-for-LHC workshop. It represents a collection of both Tevatron results, and LHC predictions. The hope is that by considering and comparing both machines, the LHC program can be improved and aided by knowledge from the Tevatron, and that particle physics as a whole can be enriched. The report includes measurements of the top quark mass, searches for single top quark production, and physics of the electroweak bosons at hadron colliders.

Abstract:This special issue of the European Journal of Physics: Special Topics entitled Topics in Light Quark Physics collects 8 papers with the intention to discuss problems in physical processes involving the particles (mesons and baryons) comprising the lighter part in the spectrum of strong interactions, though some connections to the heavy-quark sector are also discussed. Active and timely problems in this broad field are introduced and covered by experts who root their contributions in the known aspects at the same time that take us to the frontier of knowledge, while introducing in many instances new techniques for present and future further developments. The nature of the lightest scalar resonances, the hunt for the lightest glueballs, the <span class="mathjax-tex">$\Lambda (1405)$</span> as a paradigmatic example of two-pole resonances, the pion–nucleon sigma term, two- and three-body scattering amplitudes extracted from lattice QCD, the QCD phase diagram, extrapolations in the number of colors of QCD and their use for addressing properties of its spectrum, and new advances to reach renormalized scattering amplitudes with attractive/repulsive singular potentials are all items covered here.
