Abstract:Recent measurements of the properties of the top quark at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are discussed. The results were measured for single and top quark pair production in their final states, including jets with either one or two leptons or only in hadronic final states. Top quark properties include angular correlations, top quark spin correlations, mass, and width. When looking towards the future, top quark properties open new and even interdisciplinary avenues for probing quantum information science.

Abstract:For standard model (SM) processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production or single top quark production, the theoretical predictions depend on fundamental parameters of the SM like the top quark mass. Using the large data sample collected at the CERN LHC in the second data-taking period by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, these parameters can be extracted in experimental measurements with high precision. Furthermore, properties of the production processes such as quark polarization or asymmetries can be measured. Exploiting the large luminosity of the data set, new kinematic regimes and methods are explored, as for events in which the top quarks have a very large transverse momentum. In these proceedings, recent measurements of SM parameters and top quark properties are presented. Individual results are also interpreted in terms of effective field theory extensions of the SM.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions for processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production, depend on fundamental standard model (SM) parameters like the top quark mass or potentially receive contributions from beyond-the-SM (BSM) physics. By comparing predictions with measurements performed at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, SM parameters can be determined precisely, or measurements can be used as a powerful probe for BSM physics. In these proceedings, recent results measuring SM and top quark properties are reported, as well as new results of searches for BSM physics for charged lepton flavor violation, flavor changing neutral currents, and baryon number violation are presented.

Abstract:With the full Tevatron Run II and early LHC data samples, the opportunity for furthering our understanding of the properties of the top quark has never been more promising. Although the current knowledge of the top quark comes largely from Tevatron measurements, the experiments at the LHC are poised to probe top-quark production and decay in unprecedented regimes. Although no current top quark measurements conclusively contradict predictions from the standard model, the precision of most measurements remains statistically limited. Additionally, some measurements, most notably the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production, show tantalizing hints of beyond-the-Standard-Model dynamics. The top quark sample is growing rapidly at the LHC, with initial results now public. This review examines the current status of top quark measurements in the particular light of searching for evidence of new physics, either through direct searches for beyond the standard model phenomena or indirectly via precise measurements of standard model top quark properties.

Abstract:The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle and plays a special role in the dynamics of fundamental interactions. Since its discovery at the Tevatron, several of its properties have been measured by the Tevatron experiments (CDF and DZERO). However, thanks to its unprecedentedly large production rate at the LHC a new level of precision in these measurements has been achieved by the LHC experiments (ATLAS and CMS). The latest LHC measurements of the top quark mass, total decay width, top-antitop spin correlations, and charge asymmetry are presented in this contribution. In addition, the results from the W-boson helicity measurement are presented.

Abstract:The large amount of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, has brought our knowledge of the top quark to the next level. The measurement of the top$-$antitop quark pair-production cross-section has reached a precision of 1.8% and the cross-section was measured differentially up to several TeV in several observables including the top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark-pair invariant mass. Single-top-quark production was studied in all production modes. Rare production processes where the top quark is associated with a vector boson, and four-top-quark production, have become accessible and precision measurements of several of these processes have reached cross-section uncertainties of around 10% or smaller. Innovative measurements of the top-quark mass and properties have also emerged, including the observation of quantum entanglement in the top-quark sector and tests of lepton-flavour universality using top-quark decays. Searches for flavour-changing neutral currents in the top-quark sector have been significantly improved, reaching branching-ratio exclusion limits ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$. Many of these analyses have been used to set limits on Wilson coefficients within the effective field theory framework.

Abstract:An overview of recent measurements of electroweak and top quark physics is given. In particular, total and differential diboson cross sections, limits on anomalous triple gauge couplings as well as top quark production cross sections and properties, such as charge asymmetry, top quark polarization and Wtb vertex measurements, are presented. Proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at sqrt s = 7 TeV and sqrt s = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector are used.

Abstract:After the Higgs boson discovery in 2012, the investigation of its properties and compatibility with the standard model predictions is central to the physics program of the LHC experiments. Likewise, the study of the top quark is still relevant at the LHC, more than two decades after its discovery at the Tevatron. Top quarks and Higgs bosons are produced at the LHC on a large scale and share a deep connection based on the large mass of the top quark. Both particles provide an excellent laboratory in which to search for new physics: the measurement of their properties tests the foundations of the standard model; and they feature prominently in a variety of exotic signals. The coupling of the Higgs boson to the top quark, a fundamental standard model parameter, can only be measured directly in processes where the two particles are produced together. The production of a Higgs boson together with one or two top quarks is also sensitive to several exciting new physics effects. A brief overview of the current experimental status of top quark and Higgs boson physics is presented using results from the CMS Collaboration.

Abstract:The large top-quark samples collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC have yielded measurements of the inclusive \ttbar production cross section of unprecedented precision and differential measurements in new kinematic regimes.They have also enabled new measurements of top-quark properties that were previously inaccessible, enabled the observation of many rare top-quark production processes predicted by the Standard Model and boosted searches for flavour-changing-neutral-current interactions of the top-quark, that are heavily suppressed in the SM. In this contribution the highlights of the ATLAS top-quark physics program are presented, as well as projections of the expected sensitivity after the High Luminosity phase of the LHC. Abstract:With a high instantaneous luminosity and the large top quark pair production cross section, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a "top factory" allowing the analysis of millions of top events. After a short description of the top quark pair production mechanism and the cross section measurement, the accuracy of the top mass measurement needed for a sound consistency check of the Standard Model is briefly discussed. Different top mass measurement methods are presented. The observability of the single top quark production is described. Finally the observation of the Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark pair is discussed.

Abstract:The top quark mass measurements are based either on a direct kinematic reconstruction of the top quark decay products or on indirect measurements, where an observable sensitive to the top quark mass, such as the production cross section, is used to infer it. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have measured the top quark mass using various methods with increasing precision. Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produces a vast sample of top-quark pairs and single-top quarks. Measurements of the inclusive top-quark production rates at the LHC have reached a precision of several percent and test advanced next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions in QCD. Measurements of production cross sections test the Standard Model predictions and help to improve the Monte Carlo models. In this contribution, comprehensive measurements of top-quark-antiquark pair and single-top quark production are presented; the measurements use the data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015-2018 during Run 2 of the LHC. A recent result from the 5 TeV operation of the LHC is also included. In addition, a first look into top-quark pair production in Run 3 data at 13.6 TeV is also presented.

Abstract:The top quark mass is one of the most intriguing parameters of the standard model (SM). Its value indicates a Yukawa coupling close to unity, and the resulting strong ties to the Higgs physics make the top quark mass a crucial ingredient for understanding essential aspects of the electroweak sector of the SM. While it is such an important parameter of the SM, its measurement and interpretation in terms of the Lagrangian parameter are challenging. The CMS Collaboration has performed multiple measurements of the top quark mass, addressing these challenges from different angles: highly precise `direct' measurements, using the top quark decay products, as well as `indirect' measurements aiming at accurate interpretations in terms of the Lagrangian parameter. Recent mass measurements using Lorentz-boosted top quarks are particularly promising, opening a new avenue of measurements based on top quark decay products contained in a single particle jet, with superior prospects for accurate theoretical interpretations. Moreover, dedicated studies of the dominant uncertainties in the modelling of the signal processes have been performed. This review offers the first comprehensive overview of these measurements performed by the CMS Collaboration using the data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV.

Abstract:Due to its high mass top quarks decay before top-flavoured hadrons can be formed. This feature yields experimental access to the top quark polarization and production asymmetries. The large top quark sample moreover enables measurements of other properties, such as the W-boson branching ratios and helicity, and fragmentation functions of the bottom quarks. In this contribution, recent measurements of top-quark spin properties at the LHC are presented, including in particular the first evidence of the charge asymmetry in $t\bar{t}$ production (ATLAS), the charge asymmetry in a boosted regime (CMS) and the first measurement of the charge asymmetry in $t\bar{t}+W$ (ATLAS).

Abstract:Since the initial measurements of single-top quark production at the Tevatron in 2009, tremendous progress has been made at the LHC. While LHC Run 1 marked the beginning of a precision era for the single-top quark measurements in some of the main production mechanisms, LHC Run 2 witnessed the emergence and exploration of new processes associating top quark production with a neutral boson. In this paper, we review the measurements of the three main production mechanisms ($t$-channel, $s$-channel, and $tW$ production), and of the associated production with a photon, a $Z$ boson, or a Higgs boson. Differential cross-sections are measured for several of these processes and compared with theoretical predictions. The top quark properties that can be measured in single-top quark processes are scrutinized, such as $Wtb$ couplings and top quark couplings with neutral bosons, and the polarizations of both the $W$ boson and top quark. The effective field theory framework is emerging as a standard for interpreting property measurements. Perspectives for LHC Run 3 and the HL-LHC are discussed in the conclusions.
