Abstract:For standard model (SM) processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production or single top quark production, the theoretical predictions depend on fundamental parameters of the SM like the top quark mass. Using the large data sample collected at the CERN LHC in the second data-taking period by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, these parameters can be extracted in experimental measurements with high precision. Furthermore, properties of the production processes such as quark polarization or asymmetries can be measured. Exploiting the large luminosity of the data set, new kinematic regimes and methods are explored, as for events in which the top quarks have a very large transverse momentum. In these proceedings, recent measurements of SM parameters and top quark properties are presented. Individual results are also interpreted in terms of effective field theory extensions of the SM.

Abstract:The top quark mass measurements are based either on a direct kinematic reconstruction of the top quark decay products or on indirect measurements, where an observable sensitive to the top quark mass, such as the production cross section, is used to infer it. The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have measured the top quark mass using various methods with increasing precision. Recent measurements using 13 TeV pp collision data recorded at the LHC are presented in this review.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produces a vast sample of top-quark pairs and single-top quarks. Measurements of the inclusive top-quark production rates at the LHC have reached a precision of several percent and test advanced next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions in QCD. Measurements of production cross sections test the Standard Model predictions and help to improve the Monte Carlo models. In this contribution, comprehensive measurements of top-quark-antiquark pair and single-top quark production are presented; the measurements use the data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015-2018 during Run 2 of the LHC. A recent result from the 5 TeV operation of the LHC is also included. In addition, a first look into top-quark pair production in Run 3 data at 13.6 TeV is also presented.

Abstract:The large amount of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, has brought our knowledge of the top quark to the next level. The measurement of the top$-$antitop quark pair-production cross-section has reached a precision of 1.8% and the cross-section was measured differentially up to several TeV in several observables including the top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark-pair invariant mass. Single-top-quark production was studied in all production modes. Rare production processes where the top quark is associated with a vector boson, and four-top-quark production, have become accessible and precision measurements of several of these processes have reached cross-section uncertainties of around 10% or smaller. Innovative measurements of the top-quark mass and properties have also emerged, including the observation of quantum entanglement in the top-quark sector and tests of lepton-flavour universality using top-quark decays. Searches for flavour-changing neutral currents in the top-quark sector have been significantly improved, reaching branching-ratio exclusion limits ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$. Many of these analyses have been used to set limits on Wilson coefficients within the effective field theory framework.

Abstract:Results of top-quark mass measurements in the di-lepton and the all-jets top-antitop decay channels with the ATLAS detector are presented. The measurements are obtained using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 $fb^{-1}$. The top-quark mass in the di-lepton channel is measured to be 172.99 $\pm$ 0.41 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.74 (syst.) GeV. In the all-jets analysis, the top-quark mass is measured to be 173.72 $\pm$ 0.55 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.01 (syst.) GeV. In addition, the top-quark pole mass is determined from inclusive cross-section measurements in the top-antitop di-lepton decay channel with the ATLAS detector. The measurements are obtained using data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 $fb^{-1}$ and 20.2 $fb^{-1}$ respectively. The top-quark pole mass is measured to be $172.9^{+2.5}_{-2.6}$ GeV.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions for processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production, depend on fundamental standard model (SM) parameters like the top quark mass or potentially receive contributions from beyond-the-SM (BSM) physics. By comparing predictions with measurements performed at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, SM parameters can be determined precisely, or measurements can be used as a powerful probe for BSM physics. In these proceedings, recent results measuring SM and top quark properties are reported, as well as new results of searches for BSM physics for charged lepton flavor violation, flavor changing neutral currents, and baryon number violation are presented.

Abstract:The large top-quark samples collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC have yielded measurements of the inclusive \ttbar production cross section of unprecedented precision and differential measurements in new kinematic regimes.They have also enabled new measurements of top-quark properties that were previously inaccessible, enabled the observation of many rare top-quark production processes predicted by the Standard Model and boosted searches for flavour-changing-neutral-current interactions of the top-quark, that are heavily suppressed in the SM. In this contribution the highlights of the ATLAS top-quark physics program are presented, as well as projections of the expected sensitivity after the High Luminosity phase of the LHC. Abstract:The top-quark mass is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, as it plays a crucial role in the electroweak precision tests, stability of the vacuum and inflation. I review the method and the main results contained in a recent ATLAS analysis which measures the top mass by using the invariant mass of the leptons coming from W and B-hadron decays. The extracted top mass turns out to be the most precise single measurement by ATLAS.

Abstract:Four top quark production is a rare standard model process that has been observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions at \sqrts at the CERN LHC by both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Both observations were made in the same-sign dilepton and multilepton final states of the process and are presented in this contribution. In addition, another measurement of four top production by the CMS Collaboration using the all hadronic, one lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states is presented. This is the first result to take a direct look at the all hadronic final state.

Abstract:The top quark mass is one of the most intriguing parameters of the standard model (SM). Its value indicates a Yukawa coupling close to unity, and the resulting strong ties to the Higgs physics make the top quark mass a crucial ingredient for understanding essential aspects of the electroweak sector of the SM. While it is such an important parameter of the SM, its measurement and interpretation in terms of the Lagrangian parameter are challenging. The CMS Collaboration has performed multiple measurements of the top quark mass, addressing these challenges from different angles: highly precise `direct' measurements, using the top quark decay products, as well as `indirect' measurements aiming at accurate interpretations in terms of the Lagrangian parameter. Recent mass measurements using Lorentz-boosted top quarks are particularly promising, opening a new avenue of measurements based on top quark decay products contained in a single particle jet, with superior prospects for accurate theoretical interpretations. Moreover, dedicated studies of the dominant uncertainties in the modelling of the signal processes have been performed. This review offers the first comprehensive overview of these measurements performed by the CMS Collaboration using the data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV.

Abstract:The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle and plays a special role in the dynamics of fundamental interactions. Since its discovery at the Tevatron, several of its properties have been measured by the Tevatron experiments (CDF and DZERO). However, thanks to its unprecedentedly large production rate at the LHC a new level of precision in these measurements has been achieved by the LHC experiments (ATLAS and CMS). The latest LHC measurements of the top quark mass, total decay width, top-antitop spin correlations, and charge asymmetry are presented in this contribution. In addition, the results from the W-boson helicity measurement are presented.

Abstract:This contribution presents recent cross section measurements for top quark pair production (tt) and single top quark production in association with a W boson (tW) in proton-proton collisions at the CMS experiment at LHC. For tt production, data from 2017 at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of 5.02 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 302 pb^-1 were analyzed, with a measured inclusive cross section of 62.3 +- 1.5 (stat) +- 2.4 (syst) +- 1.2 (lumi) pb, consistent with standard model (SM) predictions. The tW measurement was performed using data from 2022 with an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb^-1 at a CM energy of 13.6 TeV, yielding a cross section of 82.3 +- 2.1 (stat) +9.9,-9.7 (syst) +- 3.3 (lumi) pb, in agreement with SM predictions. It includes also differential cross sections which are in good agreement with next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.
