Abstract:This paper provides a review of the experimental studies of processes with a single top quark at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider and the LHC proton-proton collider. Single top-quark production in the t-channel process has been measured at both colliders. The s-channel process has been observed at the Tevatron, and its rate has been also measured at the center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC in spite of the comparatively harsher background contamination. LHC data also brought the observation of the associated production of a single top quark with a W boson as well as with a Z boson. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb| is extracted from the single-top-quark production cross sections, and t-channel events are used to measure several properties of the top quark and set constraints on models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Rare final states with a single top quark are searched for, as enhancements in their production rates, if observed, would be clear signs of new physics.

Abstract:This report contains a brief summary of the latest single top quark production cross-section measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations on pp collisions collected during Run 2 of the LHC. Abstract:The large integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC provides the opportunity to probe the presence of new physics that could enhance the rate of very rare processes in the Standard Model (SM). The LHC can therefore gain considerable sensitivity for flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) and charged lepton flavour violating (CLFV) interactions of the top quark. In the SM, FCNCs are highly suppressed while CLFV interactions are forbidden so any measurable branching ratio for such a process is an indication of new physics. The production of four top quarks is a rare SM process which also provides sensitivity to new physics processes. In this contribution, the latest results of searches for these processes are presented.

Abstract:Four top quark production is a rare standard model process that has been observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions at \sqrts at the CERN LHC by both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Both observations were made in the same-sign dilepton and multilepton final states of the process and are presented in this contribution. In addition, another measurement of four top production by the CMS Collaboration using the all hadronic, one lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states is presented. This is the first result to take a direct look at the all hadronic final state.

Abstract:The large top-quark samples collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC have yielded measurements of the inclusive \ttbar production cross section of unprecedented precision and differential measurements in new kinematic regimes.They have also enabled new measurements of top-quark properties that were previously inaccessible, enabled the observation of many rare top-quark production processes predicted by the Standard Model and boosted searches for flavour-changing-neutral-current interactions of the top-quark, that are heavily suppressed in the SM. In this contribution the highlights of the ATLAS top-quark physics program are presented, as well as projections of the expected sensitivity after the High Luminosity phase of the LHC. Abstract:Since the initial measurements of single-top quark production at the Tevatron in 2009, tremendous progress has been made at the LHC. While LHC Run 1 marked the beginning of a precision era for the single-top quark measurements in some of the main production mechanisms, LHC Run 2 witnessed the emergence and exploration of new processes associating top quark production with a neutral boson. In this paper, we review the measurements of the three main production mechanisms ($t$-channel, $s$-channel, and $tW$ production), and of the associated production with a photon, a $Z$ boson, or a Higgs boson. Differential cross-sections are measured for several of these processes and compared with theoretical predictions. The top quark properties that can be measured in single-top quark processes are scrutinized, such as $Wtb$ couplings and top quark couplings with neutral bosons, and the polarizations of both the $W$ boson and top quark. The effective field theory framework is emerging as a standard for interpreting property measurements. Perspectives for LHC Run 3 and the HL-LHC are discussed in the conclusions.

Measurement of Single-top Quark Production with ATLAS Data

Abstract:Single-top production processes have been studied using 0.7 fb-1 of data from 7 TeV center-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Single-top is electroweak top production and the standard model includes three production modes. Each contains a Wtb vertex, allowing the possibility of a direct measurement of the CKM matrix element |Vtb|. Single-top could also be sensitive to new physics, such as flavor changing neutral currents or heavy W' bosons. Using cut-based selections, a limit of < 39.1 pb is set for dilepton Wt production and < 26.5 pb for s-channel production. For the t-channel measurement, both cut-based and neural network analyses are performed and the cross-section is measured to be 90 +32 -22 pb, where 65 +28 -19 pb is expected according to standard model.

Abstract:For standard model (SM) processes involving top quarks, such as top quark-antiquark pair production or single top quark production, the theoretical predictions depend on fundamental parameters of the SM like the top quark mass. Using the large data sample collected at the CERN LHC in the second data-taking period by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, these parameters can be extracted in experimental measurements with high precision. Furthermore, properties of the production processes such as quark polarization or asymmetries can be measured. Exploiting the large luminosity of the data set, new kinematic regimes and methods are explored, as for events in which the top quarks have a very large transverse momentum. In these proceedings, recent measurements of SM parameters and top quark properties are presented. Individual results are also interpreted in terms of effective field theory extensions of the SM.

Abstract:An overview of top quark production measurements using the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. Using 35 pb^-1 of data, we measured the ttbar cross-section in the lepton+jets channel to 13% precision and set limits on the cross-section for the all hadronic decay channel. The measurement in the dilepton channel was performed using 0.70 fb^-1 of data and was combined with the lepton+jets channel result for our most precise ttbar cross-section measurement of \sigma(ttbar+X) =176 +- 5(stat) +13 -10 (syst) +-7(lumi). Single top production was also measured in the t-channel using 0.70 fb^-1 of data.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produces a vast sample of top-quark pairs and single-top quarks. Measurements of the inclusive top-quark production rates at the LHC have reached a precision of several percent and test advanced next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions in QCD. Measurements of production cross sections test the Standard Model predictions and help to improve the Monte Carlo models. In this contribution, comprehensive measurements of top-quark-antiquark pair and single-top quark production are presented; the measurements use the data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015-2018 during Run 2 of the LHC. A recent result from the 5 TeV operation of the LHC is also included. In addition, a first look into top-quark pair production in Run 3 data at 13.6 TeV is also presented.

Abstract:The large amount of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, has brought our knowledge of the top quark to the next level. The measurement of the top$-$antitop quark pair-production cross-section has reached a precision of 1.8% and the cross-section was measured differentially up to several TeV in several observables including the top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark-pair invariant mass. Single-top-quark production was studied in all production modes. Rare production processes where the top quark is associated with a vector boson, and four-top-quark production, have become accessible and precision measurements of several of these processes have reached cross-section uncertainties of around 10% or smaller. Innovative measurements of the top-quark mass and properties have also emerged, including the observation of quantum entanglement in the top-quark sector and tests of lepton-flavour universality using top-quark decays. Searches for flavour-changing neutral currents in the top-quark sector have been significantly improved, reaching branching-ratio exclusion limits ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$. Many of these analyses have been used to set limits on Wilson coefficients within the effective field theory framework.

Abstract:Heavy ion collisions are rich and complex systems that involve different aspects of QCD and electromagnetic phenomena. From head-on collisions to the case in which the nuclei miss each other, many of QCD and photo-induced probes are being actively investigated. Abstract:Top quark production in association with a photon offers a unique test ground for the standard model predictions, as it is sensitive to the top-photon coupling. These processes are rare when compared to standard top pair production, however the large amounts of data delivered by the LHC open the window to precise measurements.
