Abstract:Top-quarks and Higgs boson are the only elementary particles that have not been observed in heavy-ion collisions in the ATLAS detector yet. In particular top quarks, the heaviest elementary particles carrying colour charges, have been argued to be attractive candidates for probing the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. In proton-lead collisions, top-quark production is expected to be sensitive to nuclear modifications of parton distribution functions (PDF) at high Bjoerken-x values which are hard to access experimentally using other probes available so far. In 2016 the ATLAS experiment collected proton-lead collisions at centre-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV per nucleon pair. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 164 nb-1, which allows for the first time in this data set with ATLAS, to measure top-quark pair production. In this work, we discuss the inclusive cross section measurement for the top-quark pairs production in dilepton and lepton+jets decay modes with electrons and muons recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is compared to the NNLO predictions for top-quark production using various PDF sets.

Abstract:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produces a vast sample of top-quark pairs and single-top quarks. Measurements of the inclusive top-quark production rates at the LHC have reached a precision of several percent and test advanced next-to-next-to-leading-order predictions in QCD. Measurements of production cross sections test the Standard Model predictions and help to improve the Monte Carlo models. In this contribution, comprehensive measurements of top-quark-antiquark pair and single-top quark production are presented; the measurements use the data recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015-2018 during Run 2 of the LHC. A recent result from the 5 TeV operation of the LHC is also included. In addition, a first look into top-quark pair production in Run 3 data at 13.6 TeV is also presented.

Climbing to the Top of the ATLAS 13 TeV data

Abstract:The large amount of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to 140 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, has brought our knowledge of the top quark to the next level. The measurement of the top$-$antitop quark pair-production cross-section has reached a precision of 1.8% and the cross-section was measured differentially up to several TeV in several observables including the top-quark transverse momentum and top-quark-pair invariant mass. Single-top-quark production was studied in all production modes. Rare production processes where the top quark is associated with a vector boson, and four-top-quark production, have become accessible and precision measurements of several of these processes have reached cross-section uncertainties of around 10% or smaller. Innovative measurements of the top-quark mass and properties have also emerged, including the observation of quantum entanglement in the top-quark sector and tests of lepton-flavour universality using top-quark decays. Searches for flavour-changing neutral currents in the top-quark sector have been significantly improved, reaching branching-ratio exclusion limits ranging from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-5}$. Many of these analyses have been used to set limits on Wilson coefficients within the effective field theory framework.

Abstract:The large top-quark samples collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC have yielded measurements of the inclusive \ttbar production cross section of unprecedented precision and differential measurements in new kinematic regimes.They have also enabled new measurements of top-quark properties that were previously inaccessible, enabled the observation of many rare top-quark production processes predicted by the Standard Model and boosted searches for flavour-changing-neutral-current interactions of the top-quark, that are heavily suppressed in the SM. In this contribution the highlights of the ATLAS top-quark physics program are presented, as well as projections of the expected sensitivity after the High Luminosity phase of the LHC. Top Quark Production Measurements at ATLAS

Abstract:An overview of top quark production measurements using the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. Using 35 pb^-1 of data, we measured the ttbar cross-section in the lepton+jets channel to 13% precision and set limits on the cross-section for the all hadronic decay channel. The measurement in the dilepton channel was performed using 0.70 fb^-1 of data and was combined with the lepton+jets channel result for our most precise ttbar cross-section measurement of \sigma(ttbar+X) =176 +- 5(stat) +13 -10 (syst) +-7(lumi). Single top production was also measured in the t-channel using 0.70 fb^-1 of data.

Abstract:This paper provides a review of the experimental studies of processes with a single top quark at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider and the LHC proton-proton collider. Single top-quark production in the t-channel process has been measured at both colliders. The s-channel process has been observed at the Tevatron, and its rate has been also measured at the center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the LHC in spite of the comparatively harsher background contamination. LHC data also brought the observation of the associated production of a single top quark with a W boson as well as with a Z boson. The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vtb| is extracted from the single-top-quark production cross sections, and t-channel events are used to measure several properties of the top quark and set constraints on models of physics beyond the Standard Model. Rare final states with a single top quark are searched for, as enhancements in their production rates, if observed, would be clear signs of new physics.

Abstract:This article reviews recent cross-section measurements of top-quark pair production in association with a photon, W or Z boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). All measurements reviewed use proton-proton (pp) datasets collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments between 2016 and 2018 from collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during the LHC Run 2. Differential and inclusive cross-section measurements are discussed along with the constraints on the effective field theory operators accessible through each process. Finally, we discuss the potential for measurements of these processes at future colliders.

Observation of top-quark pair production in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract:Top-quark pair production is observed in lead-lead (Pb+Pb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 nb$^{-1}$. Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross-section is $\sigma_{t\bar{t}} = 3.6\;^{+1.0}_{-0.9}\;\mathrm{(stat.)}\;^{+0.8}_{-0.5}\;\mathrm{(syst.)} ~\mathrm{\mu b}$, with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the pre-equilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early universe.

Four top quark production searches and cross section measurements at the LHC

Abstract:Four top quark production is a rare standard model process that has been observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions at \sqrts at the CERN LHC by both the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. Both observations were made in the same-sign dilepton and multilepton final states of the process and are presented in this contribution. In addition, another measurement of four top production by the CMS Collaboration using the all hadronic, one lepton and opposite-sign dilepton final states is presented. This is the first result to take a direct look at the all hadronic final state.

Abstract:With a high instantaneous luminosity and the large top quark pair production cross section, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be a "top factory" allowing the analysis of millions of top events. After a short description of the top quark pair production mechanism and the cross section measurement, the accuracy of the top mass measurement needed for a sound consistency check of the Standard Model is briefly discussed. Different top mass measurement methods are presented. The observability of the single top quark production is described. Finally the observation of the Higgs boson produced in association with a top quark pair is discussed.

Abstract:The top quark has been discovered in 1995 by the CDF and D0 experiments located at the two beam-crossing points at the Tevatron ppbar collider. The top quark is the most massive of the known elementary particles. At hadron-hadron colliders, top quarks are mostly produced in pairs through strong interactions. The measurement of the cross section for top quark pair production is a test of our understanding of QCD prediction at next-to-leading order (NLO). This measurement requires a deep understanding of the backgrounds to top quark production, thus setting the ground for the measurements of top quark intrinsic properties. Finally, measuring sigma(ttbar) allows to set limits on new physics models that predict new particles coupling to the most recently discovered quark. The top quark discovery needed only few tens of p-1 . The Tevatron integrated luminosity is now about 9 fb-1 , more than two orders of magnitude larger. In this document I will present some of the latest measurements of total and differential cross sections for top quark pair production performed by the CDF and D0 collaborations, that analyze up to about 6 fb-1 to provide a refined understanding of this extremely interesting particle. The identification of hadronic jets with sub- structure is thought to be a crucial tool towards the search for new phenomena at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) proton-proton collisions at >= 7 TeV using the CMS and ATLAS detectors. The first search for highly boosted top quarks has been performed by CDF and is presented here.

Abstract:We report on recent calculations of the differential cross section for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. The results are differential with respect to the top-pair invariant mass and to the partonic scattering angle. In these calculations, which were carried out by employing soft-collinear effective theory techniques, we resummed threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. Starting from the differential cross section, it is possible to obtain theoretical predictions for the invariant-mass distribution and the total cross section. We summarize here our results for these observables, and we compare them with the results obtained from different calculational methods.

Abstract:The cross section of the $t\bar{t}Z$ and $t\bar{t}W$ processes are measured in a simultaneous fit using 36.1 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The result is found to be $\sigma_{t\bar{t}Z} = 0.95 \pm 0.08 \text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.10 \text{ (syst.)}\,\text{pb}$ and $\sigma_{t\bar{t}W} = 0.87 \pm 0.13 \text{ (stat.)} \pm 0.14 \text{ (syst.)}\,\text{pb}$ and compatible with the Standard Model.

Abstract:The latest ATLAS results for processes with a top quark pair and an associated vector boson are presented here. Measurement of the production cross-section of a single top-quark in association with a $Z$ boson at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Abstract:The production of a top quark in association with a $Z$ boson is studied in the trilepton channel. The data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text{TeV}$ are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36.1\,\text{fb}^{-1}$. Events containing three identified leptons (electron and/or muon) and two jets, one of which is identified as a $b$-quark jet are selected. The major backgrounds come from diboson, $t\bar{t}$ and $Z+$jets production. A neural network is used to improve the background rejection and extract the signal. The resulting significance of the signal is $4.2\sigma$ in the data and the expected significance is $5.4\sigma$. The measured cross-section is $600 \pm 170\text{(stat)} \pm 140\text{(syst)}\,\text{fb}$.
