Abstract:Properly choosing additives to conventional lithium bromide aqueous solution to improve the performance is an important part in lithium bromide absorption refrigeration studies. Mixtures consisting of lithium bromide + triethylene glycol + water, lithium bromide + propylene glycol + water, lithium bromide + sodium formate + water, and lithium bromide + potassium formate + water were thought to be four promising alternatives to lithium bromide aqueous solutions. In the study, heat capacities of the four kinds of solutions were measured using a calvet type calorimeter at temperatures from 308.15 K to 348.15 K. The experimental data were regressed using a stepwise statistical method, and the corresponding equations for each kind of solution were given. The average absolute deviations between experimental and calculated values were no more than 0.12 % for all of the systems.

Abstract:Air-cooled lithium bromide refrigerator is one of development potentionls for absorption refrigerators. The air-precooled adiabatic absorption technique for air-cooled absorber, which is the key component in an air-cooled lithium-bromide absorption refrigerator, was proposed on the basis of the difference between heat transfer and mass transfer. A thermodynamic model of lithium bromide refrigerator with an air-precooled adiabatic absorber was established. The thermodynamic and heat transfer simulations of air-precooled adiabatic absorber were carried out and compared with that of traditional one. The effect of air-precooled heat transfer temperature difference on the ability of absorber are discussed.

Abstract:According to the experimental results related to thermo-siphon tube and the given design parameters, a LiBr absorption chiller system with refrigeration capacity of 4 kW is designed and set up. The absorption performance of the new designed falling film absorber has been studied experimentally. In order to enhance the absorption performance of the absorber, a layer of the stainless-steel web is laid outside the horizontal coiled tube. The experimental results show that as the absorption pressure increases the driving potential for absorption increases so as to enhance the absorption performance. As the flow flux of the LiBr-water solution increases the performances of heat and mass transfer decrease so as to reduce the absorption performance. As the temperature of the inlet cooling water increases the absorption performance decreases. The reason is that the decreased sub-cooling of the solution leads to the mass transfer performance.

Abstract:Absorption chillers have currently become an important device in saving energy because of its effectiveness in utilizing low grade heat. Lithium bromide is widely used as absorbent in this system. But there were few outstanding concentration measurement methods in practice before. In this paper, complete electrical resistivity data of lithium bromide aqueous solution for concentration measurement was given. The electrical resistivity of lithium bromide aqueous solution was measured at concentrations of 35–70 wt% of lithium bromide and temperatures of 10–100°C. Results of this work can meet the requirement of concentration measurement of lithium bromide in absorption chillers without extracting samples.

Abstract:Solar-powered LiBr absorption cooling system is of potential in the application of air-conditioning. A LiBr-H2O concentration difference cold storage system driven by vapor compression heat pump was proposed. This cold storage process is not affected by the environmental conditions, since the main energy input is low price electricity at night. The experimental results show that the energy storage density (ESD) can reach 77.8 kWh/m(3) and the energy storage coefficient of performance (ESCOP) is 2.81 with low heat loss. The ESCOP means the energy stored in the cold storage process divided by the total electricity consumption in the absorption and heat pump subsystem. The heat transfer in the condenser of the absorption subsystem approximately equals that in the evaporator of the heat pump, and the electricity consumption of the circulating pump in the absorption subsystem is low. Therefore, the value of ESCOP should be slightly lower than the COP of the heat pump system but for higher than 1. These results indicate the feasibility of improving the system efficiency, the operation cost, and long term operation of the solar air conditioning system by coupling the absorption and vapor compression cooling cycles. Finally, the influence of working parameters on the system performance is discussed based on the experimental and simulation analyses. The energy balance between the absorption cycle and the heat pump cycle in the cold storage system is analyzed. It is found that the coefficient of performance of the heat pump (COPeie,Hp) and ESCOP increase with a low initial LiBr-H2O solution concentration. The ESCOP decreases by 34.4% when the initial concentration increases from 52% to 57%. The average ESD increases to 140.2 kWh/m(3) with a concentration difference of 8%. Based on the experiment results, the payback period of the proposed system is estimated as 2.4 years comparing with the traditional LiBr-H2O absorption system.

Abstract:In absorption refrigeration technology, there exit two methods to enhance the water vapor absorption into the LiBr aqueous solution: adopting the high efficient components of heat and mass transfer and adding surface-active agents into the LiBr aqueous solution. The absorption enhancement using surface-active agent for laminar flow of falling film along a vertical plate is investigated experimentally. In the experiments, the 2-ethyl-1-hexanol is chosen as the surface-active agent and the experiments are designed to investigate the absorption enhancement of falling film considering the factors of falling film Reynolds number, solution inlet temperature, absorption pressure, surface-active agent concentration and falling film length.

Abstract:In this paper, a LiBr/H2O absorption refrigerator was fabricated and experimentally studied. The refrigerator was driven by solar heated water with an 85°C of designed temperature. The condenser is water-cooled at the design temperature of 32°C. The refrigeration capability was designed to be 2.3 kW at 7°C. A detailed experimental study was conducted on the thermo-siphon generator, the most important component of this type of refrigerator. The performance of the refrigerator was presented in terms of COP and refrigeration capacity. An analysis was made on the relationship between refrigerator performance and working conditions of thermo-siphon generator. The experimental results show the designed parameters (e.g. refrigeration capacity and refrigeration temperature) were well achieved. But the refrigeration capacity decreased dramatically as the temperature of hot water decreased down to the temperature below 85°C.

Abstract:Lithium bromide-water(LiBr-H_2O) absorption chiller is effective in the recovery of low grade waste heat.As the temperature is different for various waste heat sources,there is a need to study the minimum activation temperature of LiBr-H_2O absorption chiller.In this paper,the mathematical expression of minimum activation temperature is deduced and analyzed basing on multi-stage LiBr-H_2O absorption chiller.Both the energy efficiency and exergy efficiency are analyzed. Results show that the minimum activation temperature is related to evaporating temperature and absorption temperature,and the system performance reduces quickly as the stage number increases.
Isobaric Specific Heat Capacity of Typical Lithium Chloride Liquid Desiccants Using Scanning Calorimetry

Abstract:Three kinds of lithium chloride desiccants were selected, which are considered to be potential and interesting working fluids for a desiccant/dehumidification or absorption refrigeration system, and their isobaric specific heat capacities were determined in this context. Experiments were conducted at a high accuracy twin-cell scanning calorimeter. The temperature accuracy and heat flux resolution of the calorimeter are +/- 0.05 K and 0.1 mu W respectively. The data of lithium chloride + water and lithium chloride + triethylene glycol (TEG)/propylene glycol (PG) + water systems were achieved at temperatures from 308.15 K to 343.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The mass fraction of LiCl ranged from 15% to 45% in the LiCl + H2O system, and the mass fraction of LiCl and glycol ranged from 10% to 23.3% and 20% to 46.7% in the ternary systems respectively. Based on the experimental heat capacity data, a universal empirical formula was correlated as a function of temperature and solute mass fraction. In the experimental mass fractions and temperatures range, the average absolute deviation (AAD) between experiment results and calculated values is no more than 0.15%, and maximum absolute deviation (MAD) is within 0.38%. These thermodynamic data of lithium chloride solutions can be effectively used for analysis and design of desiccant/dehumidification systems and absorption refrigeration systems in both refrigeration and chemical industry. Abstract:Solar cooling turns out to be a feasible method to reduce the electricity consumption of air conditioning systems in buildings. Air-cooled single effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller has shown advantages in residential applications. It can be driven by common evacuated tube solar collectors, and save water, maintenance expense and space, due to the absence of cooling tower. However, there is no available small capacity commercial air-cooled LiBr-H2O absorption chiller yet, because of the crystallization risk under ambient conditions. In this work, an air-cooled single effect absorption chiller for which the cooling capacity is 6 kW and a solar air conditioning system were developed. The air-cooled single effect absorption chiller was fabricated and tested under a broad range of steady-state conditions. The chiller was proved successful for real application without crystallization risk and the influence of different operating conditions was also analyzed. Moreover, the performance of a solar air conditioning system using the proposed chiller was investigated for residential cooling application. The results show that the studied absorption chiller can meet about 65% of the total cooling load of the building with an average COPth of about 0.61. Furthermore, 28% of the titled solar radiation is converted into cooling capacity by the solar air conditioning system. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Air-cooled single effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller has shown advantages in residential solar cooling applications. It can be driven by common non-focusing solar collectors, and save water, maintenance expense and space, due to the absence of cooling tower. However, there is no available small capacity commercial air-cooled LiBr-H2O absorption chiller yet, because of the crystallization risk and difficulty of miniaturization. In this work, a novel air-cooled single effect LiBr-H2O absorption chiller with adiabatic flash evaporator and adiabatic absorber was fabricated and tested. The secondary heat exchanging between refrigerant water and chilled water is avoided by introducing the adiabatic flash process, therefore the conventional chilled water circulation pump and the heat transfer pipes in evaporator are removed. In this way, it is capable of improving the COP and cooling capacity with a lower size and cost of material, as well as less electricity consumption. Furthermore, three sets of experiments were conducted with different operating conditions. The evaporation temperature at 8.6 degrees C can be achieved and it is able to control the indoor air temperature to 26.6 degrees C with a raised evaporation temperature at 14.5 degrees C when the ambient temperature is 35 degrees C. The cooling capacity and COP under low and high ambient temperature are 5.3 kW/0.72 and 4.6 kW/0.65, respectively. When the hot water temperature is raised from 80 degrees C to 90 degrees C, the thermal COP is ranged from 0.76 to 0.64. During the 9 h outdoor experiment, the average thermal COP of this prototype is 0.65. In addition, the average cooling capacity is about 5 kW and the average COPele of this prototype reaches 8.3 during the test.

Abstract:Establishes the simulation model of solution heat exchanger of two-stage absorption refrigeration cycle.Analyzes the effects of strong LiBr solution temperature difference between inlet and outlet of solution heat exchanger on the coefficient of performance(COP) and cooling water flowrate of two-absorption refrigeration cycle,at the same time,the effects of temperature difference on the unit heat exchange area of counterfolw and crossflow solution heat exchangers.The theoretical analysis result shows that there is a optimal value for the strong LiBr solution temperature difference,for the two-stage absorption system,the optimal temperature difference is about 13 ℃,the coresponding COP is 12.3% higher than that of system without heat exchanger,the cooling water flow rate is 8.8% less than that of system without heat exchanger.The optimal temperature difference is helpful for decreasing the volume of solution heat exchanger and improving economic characteristic and system performance.

Abstract:Absorption refrigeration has gained more and more application with its many advantages,such as energy-saving and environmental protection.The absorption characteristics enhancement mechanism of additives and nano-particles on lithium bromide aqueous solution and ammonia water and the development of experimental study are summarized and analyzed.The mass and heat transfer coefficients of the absorber are low,which causes that the refrigeration efficiency of the system is low.In order to solve the problem,many researchers have studied the effects of additives and nano-particles on absorption through experiments,then taken measures to increase the efficiency of mass and heat transfer.The experiment mainly includes the following aspects:surface tension experiment,static pool experiment,falling film experiment,blister absorption experiment of ammonia water.All experimental results show that additives and nano-particles can improve the heat and mass transfer performance of lithium bromide aqueous solution and ammonia water in the absorber.The study will have great help to improve the efficiency of absorption refrigeration system,and also lay the foundation for the application of the technology.

Abstract:A system based on yttria-stabilized zirconia ( YSZ ) membrane electrode and external pressure balanced Ag/AgCl electrode has been developed for in-situ pH measurement in high temperature aqueous solutions.The pH values of H3BO3\LiOH solutions at 473.15 K to 573.15 K were measured by this system and compared with thermodynamically calculated pH values .The precise pH measurement is achieved when temperature is higher than 548.15 K.While below 548.15 K, deviation exists due to the large resistance of YSZ ceramic membrane and it increases with decreasing temperature .The mechanism of pH measurement in high temperature aqueous solutions is also discussed .

Abstract:In order to check the theoretical performance of the new working fluid LiBr + LiNO3 + H2O (mole ratio of LiBr and LiNO3 = 4:1), the theoretical coefficients of performance (COP) of this working fluid and LiBr + H2O were calculated at various operating conditions. The improvement of crystallization problem was also checked. This proposed working fluid was proved to increase the COP by about 5% than LiBr + H2O. The cooling water through absorber and evaporator was heated to higher temperature by this new working fluid. Abstract:The dependent development of 350 kW DL(Double-Lift) LiBr absorption refrigerator was introduced and experiments were done on the refrigerator in four kinds of variable conditions,which were respectively change in temperature of chilled water(outlet),change in temperature of cooling water(inlet),change in temperature of heat water(inlet) and change in flow rate of heat water.The experimental results show that,in the design value variation range of about 20%,with the increase of the chilled water outlet temperature and inlet temperature of hot water,and the increase of hot water flow,and lowering inlet temperature of cooling water,refrigerating capacity and coefficient of performance(COP) is improved.

Abstract:A set of mathematical models is developed based on energy and mass conservation to predict the mass transfer characteristics of falling film absorption of lithium bromide (LiBr) aqueous solution added with nanoparticles. Experimental measurements are conducted to validate the mathematical models, and good agreement is acquired. Simulations are performed to investigate the mass transfer of LiBr aqueous solution added with nanoparticles. Results showed that nanoparticles could significantly improve the water vapor absorption rate of nanofluid in the process of falling film absorption. Moreover, the water vapor absorption rate increased with the number of nanoparticle additives. With the same number of nanoparticles, the water vapor absorption rate of LiBr solution increased with the solution flow and with the change of solution flow trend for logarithmic curve. The mass transfer enhancement factor also increased with the number of nanoparticles. In addition, the mass transfer coefficient of absorber increased with the number of nanoparticle additives. When the flow rate of nanofluid with 0.05% and 0.1% added nanoparticles was 1.0 L min(-1), the mass transfer coefficient increased by 1.28 and 1.41 times, respectively. These results are beneficial in improving the mass transfer of the working medium used for an absorption refrigeration cycle and enhancing the performance of an absorption chiller. Abstract:Optimization of absorption chillers benefits energy conservation, and many related analysis and optimization researches have been conducted extensively from different perspectives. This work extends the recently developed heat current method to analyze single effect lithium bromide absorption chiller. The constructed heat current model reveals the essences of energy transportation inside the system and offers its global constraints. The chiller is further optimized to maximize its cooling capacity, and the variations of optimal results rather than simulation results are investigated to find the highest possible cooling capacity of the chiller under different boundary conditions. Results present that increasing the driving steam temperature improves the maximum cooling capacity for a small percentage, while increasing the inlet temperature of cooling water derives a significant decrease of the maximum cooling capacity. Furthermore, the influence of the minimum concentration difference of solutions as a design parameter is also studied. Results read the minimum concentration difference has a slight effect on the optimal cooling capacity and mainly influences the design of components. All results show that the terminal temperature differences of components cannot serve as optimization criteria due to their inconsistent variation tendencies.
Thermodynamic and Economic Performance Assessment of Double-Effect Absorption Chiller Systems with Series and Parallel Connections

Abstract:Absorption cooling technologies converting excess heat and renewable heat resources to cooling energy have shown progress in recent years. In this study, two 400 kW LiBr solution absorption chiller types with series and parallel connected are analyzed over a range of parameter values to better understand their applicability for different uses. Thermodynamic models for the components were constructed and validated. The performance of the chillers related to heat transfer, energy, exergy, and economy performance was comprehensively analyzed. The operating performance was investigated by considering the external variables, including inlet cooling water, chilled water, and inlet steam temperatures and the solution allocation ratio. The results indicate that the parallel connected chiller reaches higher energy and exergy performance than the series-connected chiller, but the heat transfer and economic performance was lower. The coefficient of performance and the exergy efficiency of the parallel chiller were for the reference system 1.30 and 24.42%, respectively. Except for the exergy efficiency, the inlet steam and inlet chilled water temperature had positive impact on the heat transfer, energy, and economic performance, while the inlet cooling water temperature trends the opposite. The sensitivity analysis on solution allocation ratio showed that a higher ratio decreases the heat transfer and economic performance, but considering the energy and exergy performance, a suitable allocation ratio would be 0.54.
