Abstract:In situ thermal desorption (ISTD) has widely been applied for remediating petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs)contaminated sites. Towards decarbonization of the energy-intensive ISTD of PH-contaminated sites, the knowledge on the soil thermal conductivity, in the presence of both water and PHs, is important for modeling and analysis of the underground heat and mass transport. In this work, an experimental study of the temperature- dependent thermal conductivity of PH-contaminated soil (using diesel as an example of light PHs) based on the transient line heat source method was performed, at low temperatures down to-25 degrees C with applications to PH- contaminated sites at cold regions, such as oil refineries in northern China, northern USA and Canada, etc. Contaminated soil samples were taken from a remediation demonstration site in Gansu, China. It was found that the soil thermal conductivity increases with the rise in initial water content. As the temperature decreases to around-25 degrees C, the soil thermal conductivity sharply increases due to the crystallization of water. However, as the water-ice phase change diminishes, the increasing trend in thermal conductivity gradually decelerates and ultimately reaches a stable state. Since diesel does not undergo a phase change process at the low temperatures studied, varying diesel content in soil only changes the magnitude of the soil thermal conductivity, not its trend with temperature. Based on the series-parallel hybrid framework, an effective thermal conductivity model was established that takes initial water content, diesel concentration, unfrozen water content, and frost heave into account. The results show that the predicted thermal conductivity via the model aligns well with the measured data.
