Abstract:A full-dimension oxygen-free-copper technological cavity was developed for the study on the design and the technological process of a high-current proton RFQ. The physical and mechanical design, machining and brazing technological studies, and RF performance measurements and tuning were introduced. An ideal field distribution could be reached by tuning cavity, whose consistence and smoothness of the field distributions in the four quadrants meet the demands of use. Its dipole components are small enough, too.

Abstract:Based on the previous research on 26 MHz coupled RFQ-SFRFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole-Separated-function Radio Frequency Quadrupole) cavity, we propose a higher frequency coupled RFQ-SFRFQ structure to accelerate proton beam from 35 keV to 2.5 MeV in continuous wave (CW) mode. RFQ and SFRFQ are placed in a single cavity, which greatly reduces the size of the accelerator. Instead of two RF amplifiers, only one RF amplifier is needed with this structure, as a result, this structure becomes more compact. The beam dynamic design and electromagnetic simulation have been accomplished. A 104 MHz coupled RFQ-SFRFQ aluminum model cavity has been constructed and tested at low power successfully, and the results show good agreement with the simulations.

Abstract:A superconducting linac is one of the extension options for the 100-MeV proton linac for the Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP). For the basic study on the RF superconducting linac, we have developed a prototype cavity of elliptical shape with a geometrical beta of 0.42. The main purposes of the prototype cavity fabrication are to confirm the design, to check the fabrication procedure, and to gain some manufacturing experiences with the niobium cavity. The details of the prototyping and the test results will he given in this paper.

Abstract:A four-rod radio frequency quadruple (RFQ) cavity has been built for the Peking University Neutron Imaging Facility (PKUNIFTY). The rf tuning of such a cavity is important to make the field distribution flat and to tune the cavity's resonant frequency to its operating value. Plate tuners are used to tune the RFQ, which have an effect on both the cavity frequency and field distribution. The rf performance of the RFQ and the effect of plate tuners are simulated. Based on the simulation, a code RFQTUNING is designed, which gives a fast way to tune the cavity. With the aid of the code the cavity frequency is tuned to 201.5 MHz and the flatness deviation of the field distribution is reduced to less than 5%.

Abstract:A 4-Rod RFQ cavity was simulated with MAFIA code for the design of a high current, high duty factor RFQ accelerator. The influence of distance, wide, height and shape of stems on the cavity's RF property were studied. The structure parameters of the RFQ cavity were optimized by the requirements of the shunt impedance and the electromagnetic field distribution in the RFQ accelerator. Based on the simulation result, a cold cavity model was built, measured and the result was compared with the simulation.

Abstract:The untuned magnetic alloy (MA) loaded cavity will be adopted in the recent proposed projects based on compact proton and heavy-ion synchrotron in China. The MA loaded cavity has been operated successfully in many accelerators, but there is no construction and operation experience in China. The small-size MA cores with outer diameter >100 mm have been supplied by Chinese firms, and the properties of cores are tested and show good consistency with Hitachi material. Based on the MA cores testing results, the schematic design of a cavity is conducted, which could obtain 1 kV gap voltage with less than 1.5 kW power dissipation in the frequency range of 0.5~7 MHz. The analytic and simulation results were compared on the resonant frequency, shunt impedance and Q value.

Abstract:A 325 MHz aluminum prototype of a spatially periodic rf quadrupole focusing linac was developed at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a promising candidate for the front end of a high-current linac. It consists of an alternating series of crossbar H-type drift tubes and rf quadrupole sections. Owing to its special geometry, cavity fabrication is a major hurdle for its engineering development and application. In this paper, we report the detailed mechanical design of this structure and describe its fabrication process, including machining, assembly, and inspection. The field distribution was measured by the bead-pull technique. The results show that the field errors of both the accelerating and focusing fields are within an acceptable range. A tuning scheme for this new structure is proposed and verified. The cold test process and results are presented in detail. The development of this prototype provides valuable guidance for the application of the spatially periodic rf quadrupole structure.

Abstract:Separated Function Radio Frequency Quadrupoles (SFRFQ) structure is a new post accelerator of RFQ, the higher accelerating efficiency and transmission make it become a proper choice for the post acceleration after the integral split ring RFQ (ISR RFQ)-1000 accelerator at Peking University [Y.R. Lu, J.F. Guo, W.G. Li, et al., Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 420 (1999) 2]. A novel design strategy is proposed in this paper to avoid the sparking problem and decrease the energy spread at the exit of SFRFQ. Correspondingly, a code SFRFQCODEV1.0 was developed specially for beam dynamic simulations and error studies. A prototype cavity with 14 accelerating gaps has been constructed and tested at low and high RF power successfully. The operating energy region of SFRFQ structure and the results of error study are presented.

Abstract:Recent developments in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) research have focused primarily on high frequency elliptical cavities for electron accelerators. Advances have been made in both reducing RF surface resistance and pushing the readily achievable accelerating gradient by using novel SRF cavity treatments including surface processing, custom heat treatments, and flux expulsion. Despite the global demand for SRF based hadron accelerators, the advancement of TEM mode cavities has lagged behind. To address this, two purpose-built research cavities, one quarter-wave and one half-wave resonator, have been designed and built to allow characterization of TEM-mode cavities with standard and novel surface treatments. The cavities are intended as the TEM mode equivalent to the 1.3GHz single cell cavity, which is the essential tool for high frequency cavity research. Given their coaxial structure, the cavities allow testing at the fundamental mode and higher harmonics, giving unique insight into the role of RF frequency on fundamental loss mechanisms from intrinsic and extrinsic sources. In this paper, the cavities and testing infrastructure are described and the first performance measurements of both cavities are presented.

Abstract:A mini-vane four-rod radio frequency quadruple (RFQ) accelerator has been built for neutron imaging. The RFQ will operate at 201.5 MHz, and its length is 2.7 m. The original electric field distribution along the electrodes is not flat. The resonant frequency needs to be tuned to the operating value. And the frequency needs to be compensated for temperature change during high power RF test and beam test. As tuning such a RFQ is difficult, plate tuners and stick tuners are designed. This paper will present the tuners design, the tuning procedure, and the RF properties of the RFQ.

Abstract:Shenzhen Innovation Light source Facility (SILF) is a 3.0 GeV fourth generation diffraction limited synchrotron light source currently under construction in Shenzhen. The SILF storage ring is proposed to use two 500 MHz single cell superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities to provide 2.4 MV RF voltage. In this study, we examined the geometric structure of mature CESR superconducting cavities and adopted a beam-pipe-type extraction scheme for high-order modes (HOM). One of the objectives of SRF cavity design and optimization in this study is to reduce Ep/Eacc and Bp/Eacc as much as possible to reduce power loss and ensure stable operation of the cavity. To reduce the risk of beam instability and thermal breakdown, the HOM and Multipacting (MP) are simulated. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the cavity are analyzed, including frequency sensitivity from pressure of liquid helium (LHe), stress, tuning, Lorentz force detuning (LFD), the microphone effect, and buckling. By comprehensive design and optimization of 500 MHz single-cell SRF cavities, a superconducting cavity for SILF storage ring was developed. This paper will detailed present the design and simulation.

Abstract:In the paper, some methods of numerical simulation of RF performance for accelerator cavity are introduced. In the design of a 70 MHz cyclotron cavity, to meet with the structure of magnet, RF frequency and Q value are researched, and a code based on finite element method is applied to simulate the process of RF experiment. The preliminary design of the cyclotron cavity will serve for the further physical and engineering design.

Abstract:The 500 MHz 5-cell superconducting RF (SRF) cavity was designed aiming to be a candidate cavity for high current accelerators. A copper prototype cavity and a niobium cavity were fabricated at SINAP in 2012. In order to ensure these cavities get the desired frequency and a good field flatness higher than 98%, frequency control was implemented in the manufacturing process and pre-tuning has been done using a simple pre-tuning frame based on the bead-pull pre-tuning method. Then, TM010-π mode frequency within 5 kHz from the target frequency was achieved and the field flatness reached 98.9% on the copper prototype cavity. Finally, the same procedure was applied to the niobium cavity to obtain a field flatness better than 98% which benefited the cavity performance in the vertical testing.
Dual-mode rf cavity: design, tuning and performance

Abstract:We present the design and characterization of a dual-mode radiofrequency (rf) cavity, a novel electromagnetic structure with potential benefits such as compactness, efficiency, cost reduction and multifunctionality. The cavity was designed to balance the dual-mode structure considering several factors, such as mode frequencies, quality factor (Q-factor), and minimizing cross talk between couplers. We preformed various tests to verify that this cavity preformed as expected compared to simulated results. As exampled here, a combination of the the fundamental mode TM 010 and the TM 011 mode, tuned to a harmonic of the fundamental, was realized to linearize the off-crest electric field, thereby enabling concurrent bunching and acceleration of charged particle (e.g. electrons) beam in high power systems. The reduction in the number of cavities required to bunch and accelerate promises cost and space savings over conventional approaches. This research lays the foundation for further exploration of multi-mode cavity applications and optimization for specific use cases, with potential implications for a wide range of fields including quantum information platforms.

Abstract:Superconducting (SC) cavities currently used for the acceleration of protons at a low velocity range are based on half wave resonators. Due to the rising demand on high current, the issue of beam loading and space charge problems has arisen. Qualities of low cost and high accelerating efficiency are required for SC cavities, which are properly fitted by using an SC quarter wave resonator (QWR). We propose a concept of using QWRs with frequency 162.5 MHz to accelerate high current proton beams. The electromagnetic design and optimization of the prototype have been finished at Peking University. An analytical model derived by the transmission line theory is used to predict an optimal combination of the geometrical parameters, with which the calculation by Microwave Studio shows a good agreement. The thermal analysis to identify the temperature rise of the demountable bottom plate under various levels of thermal contact also has been done, and the maximum increment is less than 0.5 K even though the contact state is poor.

Abstract:The engineering of the RF cavity for cyclotron concerns several aspects, including the vacuum, cooling, mechanical support etc. Sometimes it is even more complex than RF design itself. Given the space limit in a compact cyclotron, to have a voltage distribution of 60kV in central orbit and 120kV for outer orbit, a double stem double gap lambda by 2 cavity has been designed for CYCIAE-100[1]. The RF resonance of the cavity is simulated [1] by finite integral codes, while the thermal analysis and mechanical tolerance is studied using other approaches[2-3]. The mechanical design and fabrications is then carried out under these directions, resulting in a full scale testing cavity. The simulations and mechanical design will be reported in this paper, followed with low level measurement results of quality factor, shunt impedance curve along accelerating gap etc. After surface polishing, the measurement yields an unloaded Q value of 9300, which matches well with the simulation with a neglectable difference of several hundreds. The high power test of the cavity and will be presented in a separate paper of this conference.

Abstract:With the continuous strengthening of application requirements, neutron sources are becoming more and more compact, integrated and mobile. There are challenges in two aspects. The first is to achieve high transmission efficiency of high beam current physically, the second is to achieve integration and miniaturization technically. The coupling of RFQ and DTL is a feasible way. A preliminary study on the key physical problems in the RFQ-DTL coupled cavity has been accomplished. For the beam dynamics, the compact matching of RFQ and DTL was studied for the coupled cavity. Taking the compact physical design of the RFQ-DTL for deuterium ion beam of 30 mA with the energy of 11 MeV without MEBT as an example, we studied the smooth transition of the phase advance per unit length, the ability of RFQ transition cell to rotate beam in the transverse phase space, the transverse and longitudinal acceptance optimization of DTL. The RFQ and DTL can be matched transversely and longitudinally after removing MEBT, and the transmission efficiency is 98.7%. For direct coupling of four-vane RFQ and CH-DTL, we studied the realization of the coupling, the factors affecting the field amplitude ratio, the tuning of the cavity, and the influence of the superimposed field on the beam transmission. The field amplitude ratio between RFQ and CH-DTL is from 16.5 to 36.2. Under the influence of the superimposed field, the difference in normalized RMS emittance is less than 1%. We have designed, constructed and cold-test the 750 MHz model cavity. The normalized electric field coefficients measured and simulated are basically in agreement.

Abstract:The Xi'an Proton Application Facility (XiPAF) is a facility dedicated to the experimental simulation of the space radiation environment. The facility uses a compact synchrotron as its final-stage accelerator. The synchrotron can accelerate a proton beam from 7 to 230 MeV. Physical design results show that the radio frequency (RF) acceleration system should work in the frequency range of 1-6 MHz and provide a maximum voltage of > 800 V. To dilute the strong space charge effect during the injection period, we also aim to achieve multiharmonic acceleration. A compact RF acceleration system loaded with magnetic alloy cores has been designed and developed to fulfill these requirements. The preliminary test results show that the system can work normally with a gap voltage of 800 V. With a further RF power upgrade, the voltage can be improved to >1.2kV.

Abstract:A transportable accelerator-driven neutron source is under development in Xi'an Jiaotong University (X-TANS), aiming at realizing various outdoor applications, such as on-site degradation diagnosis of concrete infrastructures and analysis of raw materials. To downsize the accelerator cavity for X-TANS, we coupled the Ladder RFQ and an Interdigital H-type Drift tube linac (IH-DTL) into a single cavity to combine the strength of the RFQ's efficient bunching efficiency and DTL's high accelerating gradient and to distantly reduce the weight and size of the linac. To achieve electromagnetic resonance between two structures and a high coupling factor, a novel coupled structure was adopted by adjusting the last supporting plate at the exit of RFQ. The mode separation between 0mode and & pi;-mode was expanded to 7.96 MHz. Consequently, the 15 mA proton beam can be accelerated to 2.5 MeV with a length of 1.73 m and the effective transmission of above 90%. The dissipated cavity power was 96.87 kW with an operation frequency of 200 MHz and a duty factor of 3%. The design concept of the coupled structure and the results of the beam dynamics design, electromagnetic simulation and multi-physics will be comprehensively presented in this paper.
