Abstract:A new fault location algorithm for transmission line with multi terminals is proposed. Firstly, a new index for the unbalance of nodal current is defined, and it is proved that such a nodal current unbalance only appears at the node connected with the faulty line; secondly, utilizing the peculiarity of the defined index that nonzero elements only exist in the admittance matrix of the node connected with the faulty line and based on the assumption of nodal voltage, a fault identification method is proposed to judge the faulty branch rapidly and locate the fault accurately; finally, the complex fault location algorithm is turned into the solution of quadratic equation. A lot of simulative experiments show that above-mentioned method can solve the fault location of transmission line with multi branches efficiently and accurately.

Abstract:In this study, a novel fault location algorithm applicable to the partial coupling four-parallel lines is presented. In this method, the occurrence of differential positive-sequence currents at local end are used to select the two parallel lines whose electrical data measured will be used to calculate the fault location. Then two objective functions established based on the assumption that the fault occurs at different line part are used to derive a optimization problem. The line part and location of fault are simultaneously obtained by solving this problem. This algorithm is immune to fault resistance and only needs the synchronous current data from both ends of the two lines under same voltage level including faulted line. Simulation results show that this proposed algorithm can calculate the fault location accurately, when different types of faults at different locations occur in partial coupling four-parallel lines.

Abstract:The distribution network structure is complex, the scale is large, the fault rate is high, the fault resistance is relatively large, and the branch is quite a lot, so that the fault signal is hard to detect effectively and the accurate fault location is very difficult to realize. Although there are impedance method, traveling wave method and other fault location methods, these methods have their own conditions. Therefore, the method of artificial line inspection is often used to locate fault. Based on the distribution parameter model of the transmission line, this paper proposed a fault location method for multi-branch distribution line. In this method, the relationship between the voltage and current along the transmission line and at the endpoints of the line is deduced by the transmission line equations. The location of the fault point is obtained according to the voltages at fault point are equal, which are calculated by the voltage and current at two endpoints separately. This method is simple because in the case of known line parameters, it only needs to measure the voltage and current at each endpoint of the line synchronously. Through locating the single-phase ground fault in multi-branch distribution line, the results prove the correctness and accuracy of this method.

Abstract:It is very important to locate the short-circuit fault in a power system quickly and accurately. Electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) has drawn increasing attention because of its clear physical background and excellent performance. This article studies the EMTR method for locating the short-circuit fault of transmission and distribution lines with or without branches, and introduces a simulated annealing algorithm to accelerate the calculation of an EMTR fault location. This algorithm is different from the traditional exhaustive method in that it solves the corresponding optimization problem, thus improving the location speed by up to an order of magnitude. With the help of graph theory, a method is proposed that automatically splits a complex line topology with branches into several one-dimensional (1-D) lines. The problem of short-circuit fault location in the branching lines is then transformed into several 1-D optimization problems, which are then solved by the optimization algorithm. This solves the problem of realizing rapid location in a power network with branches. Numerical experiments are carried out in a distribution network model to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Results under different conditions show the method works reliably and efficiently.

Abstract:When fault occurs on a collector line of a wind farm, it needs to be located quickly and accurately to avoid the economic losses caused by the outage of wind turbines. The existing fault locating algorithms only consider single-branched lines, while in actual projects, power lines generally contain multiple branches, making the algorithms unable to locate the fault accurately. To improve the algorithm performance, this study first analyzes the cause of suspected locations, and then the principle of adding minimum number of measuring devices for single phase ground fault location of multi-branch lines is given. Based on that, a fault locating method using multiterminal data and line topology structure is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method are verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of precise fault location on complex multi-branch transmission lines,this paper analyzes fault traveling wave process and its detection requirement.On this base,it designs a distributed traveling wave detecting unit suitable for installation on transmission lines,and presents a novel fault location method based on distributed detection for multi-branch transmission lines.For this method,time of arrival of fault initial traveling wave range at detection points is all needed for determination of the fault branch.Then,the fault position is preciously determined by double-end step-by-step recursion under consideration of installation positions of detection points.Theoretical analysis and simulation indicate that this distributed fault location technology can solve the problem of fault location for multi-branch transmission lines,realize real-time measurement of wave velocity during fault,eliminate errors caused by uncertainty of the traveling wave velocity and achieve high location accuracy.

Abstract:An accurate fault location algorithm for parallel transmission lines, using fundamental frequency components of post-fault voltage and current measured at one terminal, is described in this paper. Parallel transmission lines can be decoupled into the common component net and differential component net. In differential component net, the current distributing coefficient is a function of fault distance, and the differential component current at the fault point can be expressed in terms of the current at the local terminal. Therefore, for asymmetrical faults, the phase fault current can also be expressed as a function of local terminal current and fault distance. With the fault boundary conditions for a given fault type, the fault location equations can then be derived. Based on distributed parameter line model, the proposed algorithm achieves superior locating accuracy, with mutual coupling between circuits, source impedance and fault resistance having very little influence on the locating accuracy. The performance of new algorithm is verified by computer simulation results for transposed and non-transposed lines.

Abstract:Existing traveling-wave fault location algorithms perform poorly on branch networks. A new traveling-wave algorithm used to locate faults on branch networks is demonstrated in this paper. In order to detect the fault-induced transient, an improved transient detection technique based on Park's transformation is proposed. The proposed technique self-adapts to electrical noise level and retrieves the initial traveling wave arrival time at each branch terminal in a simpler way. The fault location algorithm is based on the time difference of arrival between different branches, therefore, for unambiguously locating a fault, It is required that the synchronized transient detection module is placed at each branch terminal. A 35-kV test system case study is performed. The algorithm is evaluated by means of variety faults in the 35-kV power network. The obtained results indicate that the algorithm is very effective and suitable for fault location of branch networks.
A Two-Terminal Fault Location Algorithm Using Asynchronous Phasors Based on Distributed Parameter Model

Abstract:Based on distributed parameter model of power transmission line, a new two-terminal fault location algorithm in which asynchronous phasors are used is proposed. According to the superposition principle of electric circuits, the post-fault power network is equivalent to the superposition of network in normal state and that composed by fault components;then taking single-phase system for example, the fault distance and asynchronous time are taken as unknown numbers and the fault location equations for normal voltage and current phasors as well as fault components are established;and then the analytical expression for fault distance is deduced, in addition the recognition method of false root is given. The applicability of the proposed method in three-phase system is analyzed. ATP-EMTP based simulation results show that the proposed method can eliminate the influence of asynchronous time and is suitable to all types of faults, the fault location is accurate and the computation amount is little, in addition, it is not needed to identify the faulty phase or fault type and the problem of data asynchronization in two-terminal fault location is solved well.

Abstract:This paper introduces a fault location technique for multi-section combined transmission lines, utilizing unsynchronized fault record data. The approach determines the intersection points of the voltage magnitudes computed using the fault current and voltage records of each terminal and the constant line parameters of each section. Finally, the real fault location is identified based on the calculated inverse angle of equivalent impedance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, a three-section combined transmission line is constructed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software version 5.0.0, and various fault scenarios are simulated and tested employing the proposed algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is applicable to various types of faults in a multi-section combined transmission line; the estimations are accurate.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel fault location method is proposed for multi-branch distribution network based on traveling wave. The improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) and Teager energy operator (TEO) is used to detect the arrival time of traveling waves. Firstly, according to the signal processing ability of the ICEEMDAN method, the ICEEMDAN method is used to decompose the sampled signals when the fault occurs, and extract the high-frequency component of the sampled signals. Then, the TEO is used to extract the abrupt characteristics of high-frequency modal components. And the first maximum mutation point of the signal is regarded as the initial fault traveling wave signal. In addition, considering the transmission characteristic of fault traveling wave signal in multi-branch lines of distribution network, the difference value characteristic of branches is defined. And the recognition principle and the fault location method of multi-branch lines are established to realize the accurate location of distribution network line faults. Simulation results show that the proposed ICEEMDAN-TEO method can effectively detect the fault traveling wave signals, and has a better detection performance than CEEMDAN-TEO and HHT methods. The proposed fault location method can effectively locate fault positions and reduce location errors. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Firstly, the transmission line parameters are carried out phase-mode transformation, independent double-ended with the positive sequence fault components are selected,andaccording to the theory of establishing a dual-port transmission line fault location equation, the accurate fault location is obtained. The method is simple and has less calculationamount, which avoids the complex process ofa generalrangingmethod, such ascalculating the hyperbolic functions,transcendental equations, Newtoniterative method and search methods. Abstract:A switch is normally installed at the joint of the supplementary feeder and the main feeder in distribution network, in which the supplementary feeder supply power for the special railway line power user or integrated loads. For solving the question of enlarging fault-cutting region when processing the special connection using old algorithm based on the variable structure dissipated network theory, we model the switch at the joint based on the old algorithm and put forward an improved algorithm by introducing virtual switch. The result of a pilot system shows that the improved algorithm can fully develop flexibility of the special switch and isolate faults in a minimum region.

Abstract:Parallel transmission lines under fault can be decoupled into common component net and differential component net. For the differential component net is only composed by parallel lines part and its bus voltages are zero, the voltage distributions along differential component net can be calculated by each terminal current. The novel time-domain fault location algorithm is founded by voltage distributions from both terminals have the least difference at the fault point. The synchronization is achieved by searching the minimal value of locating criterion function, which is calculated by fixing one terminal data and moving another terminal data within a setting time. The proposed algorithm needs a very short data-window, any segment of fault data from transient to steady state can be used to locate faults, and no voltage data is needed. With distributed parameter model, simulations show that the locating errors are less than 0.1km, and the fault types and fault resistances have no effect on locating accuracy.

Abstract:A large number of distributed generations (DGs) has been integrated into distribution network, which makes the fault features much more complicated compared with traditional distribution network. At the same time, the observation capability of distribution network is limited due to the expensive measurement deployment costs, bringing significant challenges for fault location. To tackle this issue, this paper has proposed an accurate fault branch location method for distribution networks with massive DGs by a few measurements placed in the system. Based on the traditional fault location method, an improved feature is designed as the input of the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which uses the voltage value of the distribution network without collecting waveform data. Taking the cost function of CNN as the optimization goal, a measurement placement algorithm is proposed to improve performance. Simulation results based on IEEE 39-bus power system model show that the proposed method performs well for four common types of faults, even if few measurements are placed.

Abstract:Taking account of the construction features of jointed transmission lines, a new fault location algorithm was proposed based on the single-ended data of lines. The algorithm takes full advantage of the internal relations of each line's sequence voltage in fault state to establish equations, eliminates the effect of the transition resistance in principle, and can be used for single line fault location in jointed lines made up of two groups of different voltages paralleled double circuit line, and the same voltage jointed four lines on same tower. The analysis and calculation of the algorithm are simple and convenient. The simulation result indicates that the algorithm is quite useful and not influenced by the transition resistance.

Abstract:In fault states, parallel transmission lines can be uncoupled into Common Component Net and Differential Component Net. According to the fact that Differential Component Net is just constituted by parallel transmission lines part and its terminal-voltage is zero, voltage distribution along Differential Component Net can be calculated by terminal- current only. A new fault location algorithm is obtained by the principle that the least difference of voltage distribution computed by each terminal-current is exactly at the fault point. Because no voltage is involved in the proposed algorithm, there is no influence from CVT for which cannot transfer high frequency transient signal. From transient state to steady state, any segment of fault current can be used to locate faults by the algorithm. The algorithm needs an extreme short data window which is just a little longer than double propagation time of the parallel transmission lines. Using distributed parameter line model, the proposed algorithm is applicable for long distance lines since shunt capacitance is taken into account. Simulations show that, the locating error is less than 0.15km, and the fault types and fault resistances have no influence on locating precision.

Abstract:A novel algorithm for fault location in a distribution network is proposed.The entire grid is divided into several parts according to numbers of power supplies.By rapid identification of the network topology based on graph theory,the connected nodes in a same power supply zone are linked to a tree.The fault-tree is identified in first rough location when a fault happens.According to the node linkage of the fault-tree,the branches that contain fault information are selected for the second round of location process.The data inconsistency between the neighbor nodes of the branches is used to locate the fault accurately.The test result proves the correctness and efficiency of proposed algorithm.
