Abstract:Ceramic coatings have been widely used in aerospace, mechanical and chemical engineering industries because of their excellent physical, chemical and mechanical properties. Accordingly, the constituents of ceramic coatings and their fabrication technologies are improved continuously. In this paper, current fabricating methods of ceramic coatings are introduced and the effect of fabrication process parameters on the general properties of the ceramic coatings is discussed. The current development trends of fabrication technologies toward the combination among the laser beam, electron beam, ion beam deposition and the other fabricating methods, and the trends of developing high quality coatings toward the multicomponent coatings, gradient composite coatings and the nanocomposite coatings are elucidated.

Abstract:As a new structural and functional material,porous metal is being paid much more attention in the world and found application in many industrial field.There are many ways to produce the porous metal,such as foundry,powder metallurgy and deposition technique.According to the original state of raw metal material used in manufacturing,the manufacturing process can be classified as: melt-based process,powder-based process and deposition technology.The paper described the manufacturing method in detail related to foundry process.A brief introduction was given to other fabrication processes.The merits and demerits of each process were also pointed out in the paper.

Abstract:The research progress of multifuctional ceramic coatings formed by microarc oxidation (MAO) technique on metals are reviewed from the views of scientific mechanism, technological design fabrication and applicable performance. The growth phenomenon and formation mechanism of the MAO coating are first introduced. The effects of key process parameters (such as electrolyte composition and electrical parameters) and chemical composition of metal substrate on the coating growth and interface bonding strength are discussed. The strategies on how to fabricate the multifuctional ceramic coatings including wear-resistance, anti-corrosion, thermal protection, dielectric, catalysis and biological performances by tailioring the composition and structure of coatings are extensively reviewed. Finally, the challenges of MAO technique are figured out, and the special attention is dedicated to future developing trends in the view of basic principles, coating processes and engineering applications.

Abstract:<p>The present work identifies a research review on the machinability and surface integrity issues in subsequent machining of additively-manufactured thick coatings. The challenges in subsequent machining of coated workpiece attribute to the dissimilar properties between coating vs. substrate, and its microscopic properties. This work reviews and discusses the surface generation mechanism, microstructure, porosity, bonding strength and residual stress evolutions in subsequent machining of coated workpiece. It reports various subtractive machining technologies as finish operations to improve the surface integrity of coatings, by identifying the corresponding key traits and research gaps. Grinding is commonly used for machining ceramic coatings, while hard machining for metallic-based alloy coatings. The capability of burnishing of coatings is limited because no material is removed by this process. In addition, the influences of machining-induced surface integrity on service performance of the coated workpiece are analyzed. Lower surface roughness, refiner grain sizes, higher residual compressive stress, higher bonding strength and maximum shear stress far away from the interface induced by machining can lead to improvements of service performance of the coatings. Finally, future challenges and opportunities are presented. This paper is limited to review only the machining of coated workpiece with specific forming conditions. The hybrid process would be a promising technology to provide resistances to wear, corrosion and fatigue.</p>

Abstract:With the environmental regulations becoming more stringent and awareness of consumers increasing to protect environment, an urgent problem is to reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Powder coating is a kind of solid powder coating without any solvent. Due to its excellent application performance and environment-friendly, it is widely used in the field of metal coating, especially appliances of offices and home. In recent years, the use of powder coatings has been developed very fast and the requirements of functional powder coatings are also gradually strengthened. According to resin of the film forming, powder coatings can be divided into two types: thermosetting powder coatings and thermoplastic powder coatings. Each kind of powder coatings has its own advantages and disadvantages, and they will be applied in different fields. In order to improve the properties of powder coatings, there are many reports and studies about them. The compositions of powder coatings were extruded, crushed and screened to gain powder of coating. The powder always was stored at room temperature. The powder coatings often operated by two kinds which were electrostatic spraying method and fluidized bed dipping method. After that, the powder was heated to melt and cure. Finally, a smooth bright permanent film on articles was formed to achieve the purpose of decoration and corrosion. The process flow preparation of powder coatings always separated into dry process production and wet process production. The development courses of powder coatings about resins, pigments and fillers are summarized. The future development trends of powder coatings are illustrated.

Abstract:The progress of new colloidal forming processes for high performance ceramics developed in Tsinghua University is reviewed. Several new techniques for preparing highly concentrated ceramic suspensions and high-quality green bodies are briefly described, and new ideas about ceramic colloidal forming are introduced. With these new techniques, high performance ceramic parts with high reliability and complex shapes can be mass prepared, by automation, at low cost and after the removal of defects in ceramic green bodies. This may pave the way for the industrialization of advanced ceramics in the near future.

Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication,functionalization and high temperature oxidation behavior of PDCs and PDC composites for application in industrial field are summarized.Recent studies on the formation,performances and oxidation behavior of PDCs and porous PDCs for industrial application will also be highlighted.Additionally,modifying the composition of polymer precursors has expanded their applications and the formation and oxidation mechanisms of PDCs are critical for their preparation and applications.Recently,the research on polymer derived ceramics (PDCs) has been of significant interest because of their application in high temperature.Particularly,PDCs are widely used as high temperature structural materials and tribological materials,which can be due to their excellent thermal stability,oxidation and corrosion resistance,good wear resistance as well.Controlled PDCs fabrication plays an important role in their performances.Different PDCs systems are produced via diverse fabrication techniques,such as chemical vapor infiltration (CVI),melt-infiltration (MI),precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP),tape casting,sol-gel and hot press sintering.Especially,making efforts to explore PDC coating for application in high temperature is significant.The fabrication and performances of SiC coating are provided.Finally,the challenges and perspectives for the future development of protective PDC coatings are also provided.

Abstract:This paper reviews some coating technologies based on Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS), including reactive thermal spraying, centrifugal-SHS process, molten-SHS coating and reactive casting coating. Their process, characteristics and coating properties are demonstrated. These coating technologies, usually used for preparing ceramic or cermet coatings, are attracting much attention because of notable advantages, such as energy saving, operation simplicity and high purity of the products.

Abstract:<p>As two important industrial manufacturing materials, ceramics and metals have their own advantages and disadvantages in terms of physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. The field of material manufacturing has witnessed efforts to develop technical processes that can properly combine these two alloys, aiming to effectively use their respective advantages. The welding technology for ceramics and metals, as a research topic with broad prospects, is comprehensively and deeply analyzed in this review. The current research progress in this field is analyzed from different process perspectives such as fusion welding, brazing welding, diffusion welding. By using appropriate intermediate materials between these two materials, the residual stress and brittle intermetallics near the interface of the transition joint can be minimised by solving the thermal expansion mismatch, reducing the bonding temperature and pressure.</p>

Abstract:Analytical models based on force and moment balances have been developed to predict the distribution and magnitude of thermal residual stresses within the multilayer coatings with graded properties and compositions due to differential thermal contraction. The closed-form solutions of residual stresses related to the material combination and the compositional gradient of coating were obtained. Specific analyses were made on the thermal residual stresses within ZrO2Y2O3/NiCrAlY functionally and compositionally graded thermal barrier coating systems. Systematic studies were conducted on the effects of the gradient exponent, the elastic modulus of ceramic component, the number of coating layers and the material properties of the substrate on the magnitude and distribution of the residual stresses within the functionally graded coating. It was found that the residual stress distribution within a functionally graded coating could be adjusted by controlling the compositional gradient or selecting a proper gradient exponent of the coating. As for the compositionally graded coating, some results similar to those for the functionally graded coating with 50 graded layers were obtained. The remarkable difference was that the thermal residual stresses were continuously changed from the substrate/coating interface to the coating surface in compositionally graded coatings, while these stresses were stepwise in functionally graded coatings. The effect of coating thickness on the residual stresses within the compositionally graded coating was also discussed.

Abstract:With the continuously rapid development of materials science, better properties are equably required in the area of material surface engineering, especially the surface friction and high-temperature oxidation resistance of titanium alloy. It is a great approach to select a scientific way for surface treatment to improve the surface performance so as to obtain surface films/coatings/layers. It can provide a vital latent remedy to the insufficient high-temperature oxidation resistance and wear resistance of titanium alloys. Pack cementation is a reliable means at present by virtue of its distinct composition, covering pollution-free and the firm metallurgical bonding between the alloying coating and the matrix. In the last few years, with the growing demands for the surface performance of materials in multifarious harsh environments, the coating obtained by pack cementation is developing toward controlling coating composition accurately and applying it to complex parts. This review opens with an abbreviated introduction of pack cementation technology. The recent developments of pack cementation technology for enhancing diverse surface properties are scientifically reviewed in the aspects of background, previous research results and the future development directions.
