Abstract:This paper provides a new material design method for machinable ceramics within an overall methodology. Examples are provided to illustrate the use of the methodology in specific ceramic materials, and machinability of the materials is characterized with cemented carbide drills instead of diamond tools. This method enables the use of composition compounding and structure design combination for the purposes of improving machinability of ceramics while allowing for retaining mechanical properties of the materials. At the same time, this method also provides basic design principle for the other comparable but intrinsically different ceramic systems based on chemical compatibility and thermodynamic properties. Graded machinable Si3N4/h-BN and Al2O3/LaPO4 composites were designed, fabricated and characterized.

Abstract:A novel method is demonstrated to fabricate three-dimensional inter-connective porous ceramics with engineered structures. The method is based on machining and bonding of ceramic green sheets. The ceramic green sheets were processed via a viscous polymer processing (VPP) route using thermoplastic (polyvinyl butyral) as a binder, which showed good machinability and surface finishing quality. The experimental results also revealed that an appropriate solvent and adequate applied pressure were critical to ensure good interfacial bonding between green ceramic sheets and subsequent integrity of the sintered three-dimensional inter-connective ceramic bodies. The architectures and microstructures of fabricated ceramic bodies can be readily controlled by the characteristics of the green body and the computer numerically controlled machining conditions.

Abstract:A new design method of machinable ceramic composites was proposed based on the graded-structure concept and applied to the design of machinable Al2O3 Ceramics. Alumina/lanthanum phosphate functionally graded materials were fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1350degreesC for 3 min, varying the alignment of the amount of lanthanum phosphate using powder layering method. The improved machinability of Al2O3/LaPO4 composite can be attributed to the formation of Al2O3/LaPO4 weak bonding and addition of layered structure LaPO4. Monazite-type LaPO4 possesses excellent cleavage planes. Ease of machining depends on degree of crystal interlocking; hence content of LaPO4 crystals and their aspect ratio affect machinability. Such design can improve the machinability of composite, and at the same time can make the mechanical properties Of Al2O3 ceramic not to be sacrificed too much.

Abstract:The concept of computer-aided design/computer aided manufacturing(CAD/CAM) was first mentioned decades years ago in the field of dentistry.Using this technology to make dental restorations has been wide recently and developed rapidly in prosthodontics and oral implantology.Until now there are several commercial CAD/CAM systems on market.With the use of CAD/CAM technology in dentistry,it has broken the traditional pattern of making dentures manually.Meanwhile,it brings opportunity for materials science.The machinable/milled materials in dentistry should not only have excellent biocompatibility,but also machining and physical properties.Among the materials,ceramics has excellent characteristics on its biocompatibility,aesthetics,physical properties closed to natural teeth.Nowadays,in clinic,machinable ceramics are used from fledspar which has low flexural strength to high flexural strength zirconia,which have gradually realized making restoration automatically from inlay,anterior single crown to posterior fixed bridge.In this article it provides the overview of the machinable ceramic materials now used in domestic clinic for CAD/CAM in dentistry.

Abstract:Advanced engineering ceramics are more and more widely employed in modern industries for their excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness, high compressive strength, highly chemical and abrasive resistance. The high speed wire electrical discharge machining (HS-WEDM) of Si3N4-based ceramics by assisting electrode method is investigated in this paper. The theory of assisting electrode method is also introduced. Moreover, the surface pattern of machined ceramic surface was researched. Machining phenomena under different electrical parameters were studied through the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pictures. The component on the machined ceramic surface and the machining characters were also analyzed.

Abstract:Elastic mechanics and fracture mechanics were applied to the analysis of residual thermal stresses of particulate strengthened ceramics. The critical values of particle size and maximum volume fraction of dispersed particulates were derived and some principles in the design of microstructure and the selection of material of dispersed particulates were proposed. This formed a basis for the design of particulate strengthened ceramics.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. The goal of this study is to provide first-hand knowledge to the industrial community on the mechanical properties of structurally graded materials (polylactic acid/ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid) wall fabricated through fused filament fabrication. Structurally graded materials are inhomogeneous materials that consist of two or more materials to produce a final structure with distinctive material properties. Because of their specific gradient, structurally graded materials are commonly used in various applications such as aerospace, medicine, optoelectronics, biotechnology, etc. These applications have certain requirements and significant properties such as thermo-mechanical resistance and chemical stability. Filaments of polylactic acid were deposited over ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid to fabricate structurally graded material walls. Coupon studies revealed that structurally graded materials exhibited mechanical properties (tensile strength: 19.1 ± 0.3 MPa, flexural strength: 100.1 ± 0.23 MPa, compressive strength: 64.6 ± 2.35 MPa, impact energy: 1.32 ± 0.038 J, and hardness: 81.5 Shore-D) that are better than polylactic acid. It is revealed that structurally graded materials possess better mechanical properties than polylactic acid and exhibit behavior similar to ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid. Fracture morphology indicates the occurrence of brittle fracture in tensile sample.

Abstract:Machinability of ceramics is a comprehensive behavior resulting from the interactions of several factors. In this paper, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation system was applied to establish a model for machinabilities of several dental ceramics, including zirconia, empress feldspar, empress toughening leucite and lithium disilicate glass. The hardness (H-V), fracture toughness (K-IC) and elastic modulus (E) of ceramic samples were used in evaluation model with different weighted indexes. The ceramics could be thus divided into 4 groups of "easiest", "easy", "difficult" and "most difficult", based on evaluated results. Lithium disilicate glass belongs to "easiest", empress feldspar and empress toughening leucite are at the "easy" level, and zirconia is "difficult" to be machined compared with other counterparts. The evaluations by established model are well supported by the practical machining experiments while these dental ceramics being undergone cutting. This implies that the derived evaluation model is an easy and simple way to estimate machinability of dental ceramics.

Abstract:Optimizing the composition and structure of materials in localized regions of the materials is an effective approach to enhance the material utilization efficiency and achieve a performance-on-demand design. However, it is challenging to achieve such design owing to limitations in manufacturing technology. In this study, we devised a method involving vat photopolymerization 3D printing and magnet-assisted pressure infiltration techniques for fabricating near-net-shape customized gradient composites with Al/Al 2 O 3 as the model system. The mechanical properties of the fabricated Al/Al 2 O 3 composites at specific locations could be optimized by appropriately setting the thickness ratio of the metal layer to the ceramic layer, and a desirable combination of strength, toughness, and wear resistance could thereby be achieved. The fracture behavior of the composites was analyzed through in situ observation and finite element simulations. The proposed design concept and fabrication method are flexible and adaptable, and they can be easily extended to other material systems and structural models. They are expected to pave the way for the development of lightweight, strong, tough, and near-net-shape structural and functional materials.

Abstract:Functionally graded materials (FGMs) play an essential role in tissue engineering because of their satisfactory histocompatibility and excellent mechanical performance. While traditional manufacturing methods allow production of simple FGMs, precise control of composition and customized property at transition between the dissimilar materials is still a challenge. Here, an extrusion-based functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM) platform was developed to generate smooth graded parts by thrusting out monolithic cylindrical filaments with high viscosity. Furthermore, the rheological properties, hydrodynamic behavior, and mixed homogeneity of the non-Newtonian fluids were studied. Therefore, the appropriate solid contents, alternative energy-efficient mixers, and optimized printing parameters were proved to be beneficial for an outstanding deposition effect of the suspension. Ultimately, an object with smooth gradient was successfully manufactured. The validity of this strategy was verified via optical microscopy combined with an image processing method to gauge homogeneity and a scanning electron microscope to investigate graded composition and microstructure.
