Abstract:We report a photonic integrated circuit implementation of an optical clock multiplier, or equivalently an optical frequency comb filter. The circuit comprises a novel topology of a ring-resonator-assisted asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer in a Sagnac loop, providing a reconfigurable comb filter with sub-GHz selectivity and low complexity. A proof-of-concept device is fabricated in a high-index-contrast stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si3N4/SiO2) waveguide, featuring low loss, small size, and large bandwidth. In the experiment, we show a very narrow passband for filters of this kind, i.e. a -3-dB bandwidth of 0.6 GHz and a -20-dB passband of 1.2 GHz at a frequency interval of 12.5 GHz. As an application example, this particular filter shape enables successful demonstrations of five-fold repetition rate multiplication of optical clock signals, i.e. from 2.5 Gpulses/s to 12.5 Gpulses/s and from 10 Gpulses/s to 50 Gpulses/s. This work addresses comb spectrum processing on an integrated platform, pointing towards a device-compact solution for optical clock multipliers (frequency comb filters) which have diverse applications ranging from photonic-based RF spectrum scanners and photonic radars to GHz-granularity WDM switches and LIDARs.

Abstract:In this article,a practical 10GHz frame-clock extraction technology based on unequal coding scheme and high Q value filter is introduced and analyzed.We illustrate its basic principle and propose the theoretical models to simulate the effects of parameters of OTDM (Optical Time Division Multiplexing) signals and high Q value filter.Also,we employ this technology in our practical 40Gbit/s OTDM system,and acquire a series of curves and results related to this unit.Finally,the theoretical and experimental results are compared and discussed.

The wavelength of the input signal pulses is converted for demultiplexing with a mode-locked figure-eight laser as clock extraction unit. Each of the four channels is successfully demultiplexed with a semiconductor laser amplifier in a loop mirror.

Abstract:A tunable four stage active RF band-pass filter (BPF) adopting Q-enhanced technique is presented in this paper. The center frequency can be programmed from 1.3 to 1.7 GHz with 50 MHz resolution. The proposed BPF can also support a tunable signal passband from 25 to 1000 MHz with 25 MHz tuning step, equivalent to a 1.5-67% tunable fractional bandwidth when centering at 1.5 GHz. The RF BPF achieves 148.4 dB normalized dynamic range (DR). The chip is fabricated in a standard 65 nm CMOS process with 80 mA current consumption. To the authors' best knowledge, this RF BPF has demonstrated the widest fractional bandwidth programmability.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

Abstract:Opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) is a hybrid optical electrical device featured with a loop structure and high speed performance. As a kind of oscillator, the oscillation of OEO can be injection locked by an external reference frequency. We successfully extracted clock from 10 Gbit/s NRZ optical signal for the first time using the OEO. A clock signal with a timing jitter below 0.4 ps and a locking range of 800 KHz was obtained. In the experiment, we found the locking range of OEO was greatly affected by the bias voltage of modulator in the loop. Finally, we found that by carefully controlling the working condition of OEO, a data format transform from NRZ to RZ was possible. On a 160 km fiber link, the good transmission performance of the transformed RZ data showed that the OEO is a good candidate as the data format transform node at the interface of different formatted optical networks.

Abstract:We demonstrated a novel self-clocking based on in-band phase-modulated pilot insertion and extraction for ultra-high speed optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) signals. The clock recovery function is realized by inserting at the transmitter and extracting at the receiver an in-band phase-modulated pilot that is located in the data spectrum, which eliminates the need for an ultra-fast phase comparator and a phase-locked loop in the receiver. Experimental results show the clock can be successfully extracted from 160 Gbit/s OTDM data signal and employed for demultiplexing of 40Gbit/s tributaries. The self-clocking leads to fast synchronization, low timing jitter and highly stable recovered clock, which introduces 1.5 dB of power penalty with an error-free performance. The proposed method simplifies the design of an OTDM receiver and requires minor modifications of the standard OTDM transmitter.

Abstract:A performance analysis of an optical clock extraction circuit based on a Fabry–Perot filter (FPF) is presented. Two analytical methods, time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, are developed in this paper. Time-domain analysis shows that there is no phase jitter in the extracted optical clock if the free spectral range (FSR) of the FPF is exactly equal to the signal clock frequency. Based on this, we obtain an analytical expression for root mean square (rms) amplitude jitter of the extracted optical clock in time domain, in which we have taken the impacts of carrier frequency drift and carrier phase noise into account. When the FSR of the FPF deviates from the signal clock frequency, both phase jitter and amplitude jitter will occur in the extracted optical clock. In this situation, a more general frequency-domain method is developed to deal with the timing performance under the assumption that carrier phase noise is negligible. This method allows us to calculate both rms phase jitter and rms amplitude jitter of the extracted optical clock. Using the developed two methods, we present a detailed numerical investigation on the impacts of finesse of the FPF, carrier frequency drift, resonator detuning, carrier phase noise, and optical pulse chirp on the timing performance. Finally, the application of this circuit in multiwavelength clock recovery is discussed.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated 100-GHz wavelength tunable clock recovery from 100-Gb/s RZ-OOK signal utilizing a wavelength-converter based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), followed by a Fabry–Perot (FP) filter and a subsequent SOA equalizer. Wavelength-tunable 100-GHz optical clock extraction has been demonstrated from 1542nm to 1565nm. Stable optical clocks with a timing jitter of ~250fs, a pulsewidth of ~3ps, and an amplitude fluctuation of less than 10% were obtained for all the wavelengths.
