Abstract:Employing a polarization flag in a frame, we construct a point-to-point optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) communication system with a simple and feasible structure. In this system the frame clock is successfully extracted with an all optical method.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

The reason that an OEO is stable for clock devise was analyzed. The frame clock with a timing jitter 0.7ps is extracted from the 8 x 2.5Gbit/s RZ OTDM signal and amplitude equally 40Gb/s all "1" data signal.

Abstract:In this article,a practical 10GHz frame-clock extraction technology based on unequal coding scheme and high Q value filter is introduced and analyzed.We illustrate its basic principle and propose the theoretical models to simulate the effects of parameters of OTDM (Optical Time Division Multiplexing) signals and high Q value filter.Also,we employ this technology in our practical 40Gbit/s OTDM system,and acquire a series of curves and results related to this unit.Finally,the theoretical and experimental results are compared and discussed.

Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:A novel all-optical scheme for clock recovery is demonstrated by non-uniform optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) optical signal injection into model-locked optical fiber laser. In experiment, 2.5 GHz subharmonic frequency clock signal is recovered from 4×2.5 GHz OTDM signal. The technique can be used in clock recovery in high speed OTDM communication.

Abstract:We propose a polarization demultiplexing method for coherent optical PDM-OFDM based on Stokes space, without inserting training symbols. The proposed approach performs well for different modulation formats of OFDM subcarrier, and shows comparable performances with that of conventional methods, but with a fast convergence speed and reduced overhead. The OFDM signal in the time domain cannot satisfy the conditions of SS-PDM accurately. Therefore, we first digitally convert the received OFDM signals to the frequency domain using fast Fourier transform (FFT). Each subcarrier of the OFDM signal has a much lower speed and narrower bandwidth, the polarization effects that it experiences can be treated as flat. Consequently, we can apply the polarization demultiplexing in Stokes space (SS-PDM) on per subcarrier basis. We verify this method in experiment by transmitting 66.6-Gb/s PDM-OFDM signal with 4QAM subcarrier modulation over 5440km SSMF and 133.3-Gb/s PDM-OFDM signal with 16QAM subcarrier modulation over 960km SSMF respectively. We also compare the results with those of training symbols. Finally, we analyze of the convergence speed of this method. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel technique that uses a FabryPerot laser diode (FPLD) to perform simultaneous alloptical individual channel clock extraction and wavelength conversion. The nonlinear dynamical period1 oscillation can occur when a semiconductor laser is optically injected. By utilizing the crossgain modulation effect and the period1 oscillation harmonic frequencylocked in an optically injected semiconductor laser, we can extract the wavelength conversional individual channel optical clock from the opticaltimedivisionmultiplexing (OTDM) signal. In a FPLD, we numerically simulate the extraction of 20 GHz optical clock at 1550 nm from the 2×20 Gb/s OTDM signal at 1555 nm, and experimentally obtain the -105 dBc/Hz phase noise frequency division clock of 1236 GHz to 618 GHz with simultaneous wavelength conversion from 155024 nm to 154591 nm. Moreover, we investigate the influence of the injection optical power level, wavelength detuning, the FPLD's bias current level and the longitudinal mode selection on the optical clock extraction. This method is potential to technologically apply in the alloptical demultiplexing and wavelength routing in the OTDM mixed wavelengthdivisionmultiplexing (WDM) communication system.

Abstract:A novel all-optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AO-OFDM) scheme is proposed and demonstrated. Ultrashort optical pulses are used as samples for optical discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and the inverse DFT process. Different subcarrier channels can be parallelly processed by fiber Bragg gratings. A 20-Gb/s two subcarrier AO-OFDM experiment is carried out with narrowband filtering and optical cyclic postfixes(CP) inserted. Experimental results show that this scheme has good spectral efficiency. Furthermore, the received signals have better eye diagrams and bit error rate performance with the help of CP. Abstract:Opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) is a hybrid optical electrical device featured with a loop structure and high speed performance. As a kind of oscillator, the oscillation of OEO can be injection locked by an external reference frequency. We successfully extracted clock from 10 Gbit/s NRZ optical signal for the first time using the OEO. A clock signal with a timing jitter below 0.4 ps and a locking range of 800 KHz was obtained. In the experiment, we found the locking range of OEO was greatly affected by the bias voltage of modulator in the loop. Finally, we found that by carefully controlling the working condition of OEO, a data format transform from NRZ to RZ was possible. On a 160 km fiber link, the good transmission performance of the transformed RZ data showed that the OEO is a good candidate as the data format transform node at the interface of different formatted optical networks.

Abstract:Circular polarization shift-keying (CPolSK) modulation is crucial for optical communication in free space optical communication. In this paper, we propose a new optical communication system with multiple orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes for division multiplexing CPolSK modulation signals. A well-designed reference beam is employed to interfere with the CPolSK-OAM-division multiplexing (CPolSK-OAM-DM) signals for coherent detection. Then, the complex modulation signal is converted into intensity change directly detected by photo -detector. The communication performance can be further improved by subtracting the two interference beams detected. In numerical simulation, the demodulated bit error rate (BER) is 2.25 x 10(-4) with the signal noise ratio (SNR) of 12-dB, and it can be reduced to 1.25 x 10(-4) after difference operation. Through mapping the signals to both the initial phases and circular polarization states of the multiplexing channels, we construct the phase-CPolSK-OAM-DM system, the demodulated BER is 1.07 x 10(-4) with the SNR of 15-dB. The results demonstrate that the CPolSK-OAM-DM modulation can effectively expand the communication capacity of the CPolSK system. The CPolSK-OAM-DM system has great potential in the field of high-speed broadband optical communications.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery is one of the key techniques for achieving ultra high-speed optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Here we propose a novel all-optical scheme of using a mode-locked fiber ring to extract the same-frequency and subharmonic-frequency clock pulses from the uneven multiplexing optical signal. We have successively extracted the 10 GHz optical clock pulses from 2 x 10 Gbit/s OTDM signal. The technique can be used in high-speed OTDM communication systems.
