Abstract:In order to develop high voltage and large capability vacuum circuit breaker, it is necessary to make sure that there is enough strong axial magnetic field even with long gap distance. In this paper, the magnetic field of those model at the long gap distance were calculated for the coil-type axial magnetic field electrode and the cup-type axial magnetic field electrode, the results show the axial magnetic field distribution on the midplane between the two electrodes, the effect of some electrode structure parameters and the relative position between the two electrodes on the axial magnetic field were studied. Based on the analysis of the results, a new electrode structure applied to high voltage vacuum interrupters was developed

Abstract:A new single coil-type axial magnetic field (AMF) contact for high-voltage vacuum interrupters is introduced. Its AMF characteristics were studied by a finite element method, taking the eddy current effect into account. Vacuum arc appearance of the new single coil-type AMF contact was observed by a highspeed charge-coupled device video camera. Capacitors and reactors (LC) discharging current interruption tests up to 45.0 kA were done with a single frequency LC oscillating circuit. Vacuum arc appearance of the single coil-type and slot-type AMF contacts was compared. The research results show that the new single coil-type AMF contact is more suitable for high-voltage vacuum interrupters than the slot-type AMF one.

Abstract:In this paper, a new style of bipolar axial magnetic field electrode structure used in vacuum interrupters is developed and studied, which results in symmetric alternating axial magnetic field distributing intensively and evenly between the electrodes. Thus, no slots on the electrode are needed and the structure strength of the whole electrode is increased. Replacement of solid block iron core by a stromatolithic iron core reduces the eddy current and the lag time of the axial magnetic field behind the arc current. The results of tests show that this electrode structure can reduce the arc voltage and increase the interrupting current capacity of vacuum interrupters.
A New Electrode Applied to High Voltage Vacuum Interrupter and Its Performance

Abstract:Vacuum interrupter is the core of high voltage vacuum switch. Because of the long contact gap, the axial magnetic field (AMF) contact is widely used to generate stronger and evener AMF in the contacts’ gap. It can reduce arc current density and arc energy, so its interrupting performance is improved. A new AMF electrode applied to high voltage vacuum interrupter was introduced, it has some advantages such as simple structure, easy-machining, strong mechanism intensity and so on. Its axial magnetic field characteristic was calculated and analyzed with the solution of finite element. The calculation results indicated that the axial magnetic field characteristic for the new one is superior to a few traditional electrodes. The vacuum interrupter used the new electrode was tested in the synthetic test circuit, the short-circuit current interrupting ability was still excellent when the contact gap was 40 mm and 60 mm.

Abstract:The first Chinese vacuum interrupter having intellectual p roperty righ ts is an iron style bipolar axial magnetic field vacuum interrupter and it has hi gh interrupting capability. It is meaningful to analyze its axial magnetic field by numerical method because the results are helpful to make the interrupting ca pability higher. The static axial magnetic field of the vacuum interrupter is an alyzed by finite element method. It is shown that the axial magnetic flux densit y produced by this kind of vacuum interrupter is very high and its distribution is nearly uniform. It is also shown that the axial magnetic field can be influen ced by the structure parameters strongly. The axial magnetic flux density will i ncrease significantly when electrode diameter increases and it will decrease qui ckly when gap increases. When arm width increases the flux density will decrease linearly.

Abstract:The effect of the external magnetic field mainly generated by external connecting buses on the vacuum are is studied in this paper. This magnetic field which crosses to the vacuum are will make the are moved out of the electrodes gap, and reduce the interrupting ability of the vacuum interrupters, A kind of magnetic shield which can prevent the vacuum are from being affected by the external magnetic field is developed in this paper. Abstract:Iron style bipolar axial magnetic field vacuum interrupter is a novel vacuum interrupter and it is the first one that is developed in China. Its axial magnetic field in the gap and eddy current in the iron core are analyzed. It is shown from the static axial magnetic field analysis that its axial magnetic flux density is very high and its distribution is homogeneous on the iron area. The axial magnetic flux density will increase significantly when electrode diameter increases or gap decreases. When the arm width increases the flux density will decrease almost linearly. It is shown that eddy current is related to electrode structure parameters and iron material property. When contact diameter decreases or arm width increases, eddy current will decrease. When gap increases eddy current will decrease slightly. Eddy current will increase nonlinearly with the increase of magnetic permeability and generally does so with the increase of conductivity. It is also shown that a laminated iron core is a good way to reduce eddy current. Since the iron core has an important influence on the AMF, an improved iron core design is obtained

Abstract:To improve the limiting current interruption capability and minimizing vacuuminterrupter with axial magnetic field（AMF）electrodes,it is significant to investigate the vacuumarc behaviours between the contacts.AMF distributions of the slot type electrodes were studiedby both numerical analysis and experiments.Furthermore,the behaviours of vacuum arcs fordifferent parameters of the slot type AMF electrodes were investigated by using high-speed CCDcamera.The influences of gap distance,contact diameter and phase shift time between AMF andarc current on the vacuum arc were investigated.The results provide a reference for research anddevelopment of vacuum interrupters with slot type or other types of AMF electrode.

Abstract:The influence of an arc current on the discharge development and the arc modes of a single coil type axial magnetic field (AMF) electrode were investigated by a high-speed charge couple device (CCD) video camera in a long gap distance of 40 mm. The distribution of the axial magnetic field of the single coil type AMF electrode was computed. By computational results, the single coil type AMF electrode could generate higher axial magnetic flux density than the slot type AMF electrode. It was found that the single coil type AMF electrode could perform better than the slot type AMF electrode with the same designing parameters. And the development of the arc modes experienced diffuse mode, constricted but unstable mode, and constricted and stable mode with the amplitude of the arc current increasing. The correlation between the vacuum arc and the noise components of arc voltage was investigated too. The interruption capability could be known in a practical commercial vacuum interrupter by the test results in a demountable vacuum interrupter (DVC) with a electrode diameter of 50 mm and a gap distance of 40 mm. The test results could provide reference to design the high voltage vacuum interrupter adopting the single coil type AMF electrode.

Abstract:DC Vacuum Circuit Breakers based arc control has been a major topic in the last few decades. Understanding vacuum arc (VA) gives the ability to improve vacuum circuit breakers capacity. In this paper, the interaction of a DC vacuum arc with a combined Axial-Radial magnetic field was investigated. The proposed system contains an external coil to produce axial magnetic field (AMF) across the vacuum chamber. The vacuum interrupter (VI) contacts were assumed to be untreated radial magnetic field (RMF) contacts. For this purpose, Finite Element Method (FEM) based Multiphysics simulation of the immerging magnetic field influence on the VA is presented. The simulation shown the ability of the presented system to deflect high DC vacuum arc, also reveals that the vacuum arc interruption capability increases with the rise of the axial component of the magnetic field. Simulation results shown that this method can be applied to improve the interruption capability of the VI.

Abstract:Several contact structures for medium voltage vacuum interrupters are analyzed and the feasibility of applying them to high voltage vacuum interrupter is researched. Finite element method based simulation and computation of magnetic field characteristics for two kinds of contact structures,i.e.,the coil type of axial magnetic field (AMF) contact structure with one-third turn and cup type of AMF contact structure,under long break distance are conducted.The AMF distribution is optimized by modifying a part of contact structural parameters,and the feasibility of applying them to high voltage vacuum extinction chamber are researched based on results of analytical calculation.Research results show that under the condition of long break distance the magnetic field generated by both above-mentioned contact structures is insufficient to control vacuum arc although a part of contact structural parameters are optimized.The coil type of AMF contact structure with one-half turn possesses more intensive axial magnetic field,so it is suitable to be applied in vacuum interrupters to switch off intense current.

Abstract:Magnetic characteristics of axial magnetic field (AMF) of four kinds of vacuum interrupter contacts are studied with 3D finite element method, which included axial magnetic flux density, eddy current in contact plates and phase shift time between AMF and source current. Four AMF vacuum interrupter contacts are studied, which include coil type, cup type, bipolar type and quadrapolar type. The results show that: 1) The strongest AMF at current peak is with coil type contact. It follows by bipolar type, cup type, quadrapolar type with which AMF weakens accordingly. 2) The weakest AMF at current zero is with quadrapolar type contact. It follows by bipolar type, cup type, coil type with which AMF strengthens accordingly. 3) The shortest phase shift time is with bipolar type. It follows by quadrapolar type, coil type, cup type with which phase shift time becomes higher accordingly
Development of 126 kV Single-break Vacuum Circuit Breaker

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to present development of 126 kV single-break vacuum circuit breaker. Three kinds of electrodes were compared, which were 3/4 coil type, horseshoe type, and slotted horseshoe type geometry. Characteristics of axial magnetic field, vacuum arcs, temperature-rise and short circuit current interruption were analyzed based on simulation and experiment. Average ring current density in electrode disc of 3/4 coil type, horseshoe type and slotted horseshoe type electrode at current of 40 kA was 1.7×10 7 ,(5.5 ×10 7 , and 3.5× 10 7 ,A/m 2 ,respectively. The maximum value of phase shift time of these three geometries region were 1.18, 1.57, and 0.48 ms, respectively. Two vacuum arcs columns with self-balance process was observed for horseshoe type electrode. 3/4 coil type electrode presented one arc column. Besides, vacuum interrupter with 3/4 coil type electrode met temperature-rise requirement at current of 2500 A according to simulation and experiment. Vacuum interrupter with slotted horseshoe type was suitable for normal current of 3150 A according to simulation. Finally, a 126 kV single-break vacuum circuit breaker with 3/4 coil type electrode was developed. It has passed type test according to standard ICE 62270-100.

Abstract:Axial magnetic field (AMF) can prevent the contraction of the vacuum arc, so it improves the breaking capacity of vacuum circuit breakers. The purpose of this paper is to study the vacuum arc characteristics under different AMF by experiments. Cup-shaped AMF contact, 2/3 coil-type contact, and 1/2 coil-type contact with a diameter of 120mm are used. The gap distance is fixed at 20 mm. The peak current ranges from 15 kA to 35 kA. The experimental results show that at the gap distance of 20mm, all three AMF contacts can keep the arc diffuse, although the arc appearance is slightly different. After the arc is ignited, the is a noisy period of arc voltage corresponding to the arc instability. The contraction on cup-shaped contact weakens with the increase of current level, while the contraction on 1/2 coil-type contact rises with the current level and the current level has a weak influence on the contraction. There is a re-ignition of arc on 1/2 coil-type contact at 35 kA and no reignition of arc on 2/3 coil-type contact and cup-shaped AMF contact. 2/3 coil-type contact and cup-shaped AMF contact can provide a greater breaking capacity.

Abstract:In this paper the arc modes transition of the AMF electrode with one-turn coil structure is investigated at gap distance 10mm and 40mm respectively. And the axial magnetic field distribution is computed at 10mm and 40mm. High-speed video recording was used as a major diagnostics to investigate the arc behavior. At gap distance 10mm, the vacuum arc maintains diffuse arc mode. With the gap distance increasing from 10mm to 40mm, the vacuum arc experience constricted arc modes only in short time at beginning. In most of time, the vacuum arc keeps in diffuse arc mode. The test results prove that the AMF electrode with one-turn coil structure is feasible to be applied in high voltage interrupter

Abstract:With the rapid development of multiterminal high-voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission systems, the research and development of high-speed and stable high-voltage dc circuit breakers have received attention. Among them, mechanical dc circuit breakers based on manual zero-crossing dc breaking technology have been applied in practical projects, owing to their small size, low on-state loss, and low price. However, this method adds a high-frequency current, which deteriorates the magnetic field between the poles of the interrupter when the arc is broken. Therefore, the development of HVdc circuit breakers that maintain high peak magnetic fields and low residual magnetic fields at high frequencies has become the key to the development of multiterminal HVdc transmission. To solve this problem, this article proposes a new interrupter for a vacuum dc circuit breaker based on artificial zero-crossing technology and studies its key characteristics, such as temperature rise, electromagnetic field, and arc column plasma distribution characteristics. The results reveal that the new interrupter proposed in this article has a low-temperature rise, uniformly distributed electric field, high peak value and low remanence of the longitudinal magnetic field, and uniformly distributed plasma in the arc column, and exhibits arc diffusion. Its ability to cope with high-frequency current is significantly higher than that of the traditional cup-shaped axial magnetic field (AMF) contact system interrupter, which is conducive to the high-speed and stable breaking of the interrupter.

Abstract:The vacuum interrupter is the core component of the DC circuit breaker to ensure the vacuum arc is extinguished reliably. The objective of this paper is to propose a method for extinguishing a DC vacuum arc directly by using an over 400 mT uniform unidirectional transverse magnetic field (TMF). The TMF is generated by an annular Halbach array consisting of 8 permanent magnets. The evolution process and interruption characteristics of the DC vacuum arc under Halbach TMF are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the whole interruption process consists of two stages, namely, the stable stage and the unstable stage. The stable stage corresponds to the stagnation and aggregation of cathode spots, and the unstable stage corresponds to the arc motion and reignition. The arc motion and reignition lead to the irregular oscillation of the arc voltage. Meanwhile, lateral movement of the arc followed by a fall at the edge of the contacts is the key to the rapid drop in current. It is found that a large arc current leads to a long duration of the stable stage, while the critical current is proportional to the contact separating distance. The experimental results show that the DC interruption capacity of the vacuum interrupter under the Halbach TMF exceeds 500 V/ 830 A, 700 V/ 660 A, and 1200 V/ 370 A, respectively. At last, two topologies based on Halbach TMF vacuum interrupter for DC interruption are proposed, and their future applications in mechanical/ hybrid DC circuit breakers are discussed.

Abstract:Suppose that the potential on the electrodes is asymmetric and the voltage on the floating shield is unknown with the consideration of the influence of the ions on the electrode surface, the electric field distribution in the high-voltage vacuum interrupter is calculated and analyzed with finite-element method, thus the conclusion is drawn that the serious asymmetry of the electric field distribution in the vacuum interrupter has affected the electrical strength and the interrupting performance of the interrupter. Furthermore, the proposal is advanced to make electric field distribute more uniformly or symmetrically.
