Abstract:The effect of four kinds of rare earth elements on the depositing rate of Ni-based alloy brush plating coatings was investigated. The results indicate that all of the selected rare earth elements increase the depositing rate of Ni-based alloy coatings, and Sm increases the depositing rate most obviously. There is an optimum amount of rare earth addition in the plating solution. With the change of plating voltage to a certain extent, the results reveal no differences. The mechanism of the increase of the depositing rate was analyzed.

Abstract:The bath formulation is optimized through orthogonal experiments, and an amorphous Ni-Fe-P-RE composite coating is obtained. The coating is analyzed by X-ray fluorescence for its composition, tested by microhardness meter for its hardness and subjected to anticorrosion test for its corrosion resistance The results show that proper amount of RE not only has an important influence on the components of the composite coating, but also can greatly improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of the coating.

Abstract:The self-propagating spraying coating was prepared by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS). The effects of the rare earth(RE) on microstructure and the abrasive resistence of self-propagating spraying coating was investigated. The obvelrvations and analysis of the microscopic appearances of the worn surfaces of the coating were conducted by the use of SEM. The results showed: the RE can impove the properities of the self-propagating spraying coating, the suitable small amount(0.2%) of RE can refine the self-propagating spraying coating and improve the hardness and the wear resistence efficiently. When the excessive RE(0.5%) was added into the self-fluxing alloy power, the properties of the self-propagating spraying coating became worse.

Abstract:The phosphating thermodynamics was discussed to conclude that rare earth is valid for improving the quality of phosphate coating for anchoring layer.With multiplex accelerant containing rare-earth compound,a novel anti-corrosive zinc-phosphating process at the low temperature,very feasible as painting pretreatment of steel and iron parts,was developed and optimized.The experimental results show that the phosphating effect is very good for cold-rolling A3 thin steel plate used widely to home appliances crust.With the fast LZP zinc-phosphating solution including 1.0~2.0g/L rare-earth accelerant,the phosphate coating thickness about 3μm is obtained at 40℃ in 3~4min,which is fine and compact crystal,highly adhesive to substrate of A3 steel plate and excellent corrosion resistance.Moreover,experimental results of online painting show that the paint coating has excellent characteristics of shock resistance,corrosion resistance and adhesion.

Abstract:Effect of rare earth (RE) metals addition on the microstructure, formation of Fe–Zn intermetallics and corrosion resistance of the batch galvanising Zn–0·18Al coating were studied. Microstructure of the coating was observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Salt spray test and surface potential measurement were employed for corrosion resistance determination. The results show that the addition of RE can improve bath liquidity, refine surface spangles, stabilise the Fe2Al5 inhibition layer, decrease coating thickness and enhance corrosion resistance of the coating. However, corrosion resistance of the coating did not increase continuously with increasing RE content and the optimum RE content lies between 0·045 and 0·069 in the experiment. Mechanism of RE on the corrosion resistance of the galvanised coating was briefly analysed.

Abstract:The effects of RE addition on the bath liquidity,thickness,microstructure and corrosion resistance of the coating were investigated,and the mechanism of RE on the corrosion resistance of hot-dip galvanized coating was also discussed.The results show that addition of RE can improve the bath liquidity,refine the dendrites,decrease the thickness and improve the corrosion resistance of the coating.However,the corrosion resistance of the coating does not increase continuously with increasing RE content.The optimum RE content in the experimental lies between 0.045% and 0.069% and the corresponding coating corrosion resistance is nearly 2.8 times as high as that without RE.

The experimental results show that the RE-1 and RE-2 additives increase the coating forming voltage, improve the hardness, wear resistance of the oxide coating, and also increase the coating forming rate.

Abstract:The Ni-W-Er2O3 coating on 45(#) steel substrate was fabricated by electrodeposition. The microstructure and morphology of the composite coatings were analyzed by SEM, EDS and XRD. At the same time, the thickness, microhardness and corrosion resistance of the coating were measured by the magnetic thickness apparatus, a microhardness tester and an electrochemical workstation, respectively. The results show that the composite coating has a compact structure without obvious flaws and a good adhesion with the matrix. The composite coating can obtain high hardness, high tungsten content and better corrosion resistance with the addition of rare earth oxide Er2O3. When the addition amount is 16 g/L, the comprehensive performance of the coating is best.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of RENi 5− x M x (M = Co, Mn, Ti) hydrogen storage alloys with different compositions of rare earth components (RE = La 1−x−y−z Ce x Nd y Pr z ) were systematically examined. The results showed that La, Ce, Nd and Pr all had big effects on the electrode performance. A mathematical-methodological approach to compositions was used and the results showed that all had the combined effect on the electrode properties. A computer program was adopted to draw out isographs including the isodischarge capacity, iso-high-rate dischargeability and isocycle life of multicomponent alloy electrodes vs. the composition of quasi-ternary rare earth elements.

Abstract:Cu-12%Ag and Cu-12%Ag-0.3%RE alloys were manufactured by cold drawing combined with intermediate heat treatments.The drawn alloys were annealed at different temperatures.The morphology and structure of the compound particles in Cu-12%Ag-0.3%RE were examined.The changes of the microstructure and properties with annealing temperature and the effect of rare earth additions were investigated.The results show that the primary Cu-rich dendrites and eutectic colonies in the alloys evolve into filamentary structure during the drawing deformation.The filamentary structure changes into recrystallization structure of equiaxed grains during annealing at 500 ℃.The strength of the alloy decreases whereas the conductivity increases with increasing annealing temperature.Adding 0.3% rare earth elements into Cu-12%Ag alloys(Cu,Ag)6(Ce,La) compound particles form and the softening resistance in annealing are increased at temperatures lower than 300 ℃,whereas the conductivity are slightly decreased.The compound particles are hardly deformed during the drawing process and hardly influence the recrystallizaion behavior of the filamentary structure during the annealing process.

Abstract:This laboratory study aimed to reveal the inner connects between the microstructure and corrosion properties of a RE microalloyed ultra-thin cast strip (UCS) steel. The microstructure mainly consisted of homogeneous polygonal ferrite (PF) with a small amount of pearlite (P), while adding multiple alloying elements led to the appearance of granular bainite (GB) and bainitic ferrite (BF). RE elements strongly promoted the homogenization and refinement of microstructure by segregating towards the solid–liquid interface. Potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, and weight loss curves under wet–dry immersion test confirmed that the corrosion behavior was significantly improved by RE, while the addition of RE had no obvious change on tensile strength. The corrosion resistance of the homogeneous single-phase microstructure was proved to be better than that of multiphase microstructure. Hence, RE had a remarkable influence on improving corrosion resistance when the experimental steels processed single-phase microstructures.

Abstract:Eight different Cr3C2–NiCr coatings doped with rare earth oxide were deposited with supersonic plasma spraying. Surface contact profiler, X-ray diffractometer, environmental scanning electron microscopy, multi-functional tribometer, microhardness tester were employed to investigate the microstructure and friction and wear performance of sprayed coatings. The results show that the wear volume loss of coatings doped with 2wt.% La2O3 and 2wt% La2O3+2wt.% CeO2 is three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the coating without rare earth, respectively, correspondingly the friction coefficient of two coatings is only two third of that of the coating without rare earth. According to the SEM worn surface observations, the wear mechanism of the coating doped with 2wt% La2O3 is strain crushed wear induced by plastic deformation and fatigue during the sliding process, which is distinct with abrasive wear and delamination fracture wear mechanisms of the coating without rare earth. Furthermore, rare earth can make the microstructure more compact, less porous and denser, leading to the increase of average microhardness and decrease of its fluctuation range of sprayed coatings.

Abstract:In the present paper,the effects of rare earth(RE)and chromium on corrosion of iron base fluxing alloy spray-welding coatings is reported.The solution corrosion tests have been carried out in 4wt%NaCl solution,10wt% H2SO4,3wt%HCl and 10wt%HNO3 solutions.It shows that the results are different in the respective medium.In dilute nitric acid and 4wt%NaCl solution,the coatings prepared from alloys with high chromium content have excellent corrosion resistance.In dilute sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid,the corrosion resistance of alloys with high chromium content is lower than that of alloys with low chromium.In the cases of sulfuric acid and nitric acid the addition of RE enhanced the corrosion resistance of alloys,but in hydrochloric acid,the addition of RE has no apparent advantage.The mechanism of those results has also been suggested in the present paper.

Abstract:WC-12Co coatings with different content of nano-sized rare earth were prepared by high velocity oxy-fuel thermal spray(HVOF) on 45 steel substrate.In order to study the effect of nano-sized rare earth on WC-12Co coating,microhardness,bonding strength and wear resistance of the coatings were tested,and XRD analysis was carried out.The results show that appropriate nano-sized rare earth can greatly improve the coating hardness and bonding strength,and it can also restrain decarburization of WC particles,make the microstructure fine.The coating with 1.5wt% nano-sized rare earth presents the best wear resistance.

Abstract:An investigation of the effect of rare earth elements (RE) on erosion resistance of nitrided 40Cr steel is carried out using an erosion test rig in a water-based slurry with quartz particles. Results indicate that a significant improvement occurs in erosion resistance of nitrided 40Cr steel by introducing RE in nitriding processes comparing conventional nitriding processes. Measurement of physical properties exhibits that both hardness and toughness of nitrided 40Cr steel increase in the case using RE-nitriding processes comparing the conventional. Metallurgical microscopy reveals that there is a transformation from a coarse to a fine metallurgical microstructure in the case and an increase in the thickness of white layer on the top of case attributed to an introduction of RE in nitriding, which attributed to an improvement in erosion resistance and physical properties. EDX analysis shows that RE diffuse into the case of 40Cr steel in nitriding process as a result of appearance of micro-alloy. Microscopy revealed that the furrow-like peeling from plastic deformation of material is predominant erosion mechanism of RE nitrided 40Cr steel while the furrow-like peeling with initial cross crack and large grinding peelings takes place predominantly in tests of conventionally-nitrided ones, which results in a significant difference in erosion resistance.

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to improve wear resistance of the spray-melted coatings by adding rare earth into mixture of Ni60B and 35 mass.%WC.The spray-melted coatings are produced with oxygen-acetylene flame spray technique.Influence of rare earth on microstructure of spray-melted coatings is also investigated.The results show that adding a proper amount of rare earth can increase the wear resistance of spray-melted coatings,and rare earth makes the pattern of tungsten carbide better.

Abstract:The aluminized coating on 316 L stainless steels was prepared by pack cementation. The effects of rare earths(RE) elements and surface mechanical activation treatment(SMAT) on the process of aluminizing were studied. Microstructure and components distribution of aluminizing layer were also investigated. The results indicated that RE and SMAT can stimulate the aluminizing process. Optimum parameters were obtained as RE addition in agent with 3% ~ 5% mass fraction and SMAT for samples with 8 hours. The aluminized layer we obtained is compact and ingredients gradient change and hardness increase. Effect mechanism of RE and SMAT on the aluminizing process was also investigated. The grains on the surface of 316 L stainless steel samples can be broken under the shot peening of grinding balls in the process of SMAT,resulting in more and more defects such as dislocation,grain boundaries and so on. Jumbo size RE atoms can permeate into the matrix following these defects’ channel,which propagates the defects density. Amount of permeation channels into matrix of aluminium atoms will be formed and the promotion roles of RE and SMAT was so explored.

Abstract:This investigation studied the effects of rare earths (RE) and chromium on the high temperature oxidation resistance and aqueous corrosion resistance of iron base self-fluxing alloy coatings. Four coatings were prepared through smelting-atomizing and oxide-acetylene flame spraying. The properties of the coatings were evaluated by cyclic oxidation tests, weight loss experiments, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic scanning technique, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The addition of RE greatly enhanced the oxidation resistance of the coatings. This effect was attributed to the fact that RE changed the ion diffusion patterns of the coatings in the process of scale forming, resulting in more protective scales with high adhesion. The increase of chromium content in the coatings enhanced the corrosion resistance of the coatings in nitric acid solution, but in hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid solutions the result was reversed. Rare earth addition had a beneficial effect in sulfuric acid and nitric solutions, but in hydrochloric acid, the samples with RE had a corrosion rate slightly higher than that of the samples without RE addition. These results are explained by the effect that the addition of RE minimized the cathodic area of the coatings.

Abstract:Eight different CoCrW coatings doped with rare earth oxide were deposited by supersonic plasma spraying (SPS). Environmental scanning electron microscopy, microhardness tester, X-ray diffractometer, and self-developed tribometer for high temperature were employed to investigate the properties of sprayed coatings. The results show that rare earth can refine the microstructure effectively, and make the element distribution uniform, which leads to the increase of average microhardness and the corresponding decrease of fluctuation range of sectioned surface of SPS coatings. Furthermore, the rare earth can reduce the friction coefficient between the SPS coating and glass during the sliding process at about 973K largely, and the mechanism of anti-friction is also discussed.
