Abstract:High oriented TiO2-ZrO2 thin films were prepared with sol-gel process followed by dip-coating the ethanol solution of zirconium oxychloride and titanium tetrachloride. The microstruc-ture, morphology and tribological properties of TiO2-ZrO2 thin films were investigated using AFM, XPS, XRD and dynamic-static tribometer. The results show that the TiO2 -ZrO2 films are dense, homogeneous and in a complete tetragonal phase; which display an excellent antiwear and friction reduction performance. Under 0.5 N applied load, the friction coefficient is only 0.14~0.20 and the an-tiwear life is more than 5000 sliding cycles for the TiO2-ZrO2/AISI 52100 steel and TiO2-ZrO2/Si3N4 systems.

Abstract:A new silica antireflective coating with improved hydrophobicity and optical stability in a vacuum is obtained by a two-step route. Firstly, silica sols are prepared with a sol-gel process, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate is utilized as a precursor. And by introduction of fluorine containing glycol into the sols, the porosity of silica particles and surface polarity of the coatings are decreased. Afterward, coatings are constructed with low surface roughness by modification of PMBA-PMMA. The coatings retain transmission of up to 99.6%, and laser damage threshold of about 50 J/cm2 at a wavelength of 532 nm (1-on-1, 10 ns).

Abstract:Hard optical coating films based on SiO2/TiO2/organically modified silane (ORMOSIL) were obtained by the sol–gel technique. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy were also used to investigate the structural properties of the coating. It is proposed that the high hardness of the coating film is related to the carbon and titanium content in the film.
Optimizing the fabrication of abrasion-resistant and transparent organosilicon coating

Abstract:A double group abrasion-resistant organosilicon coating is designed and prepared,which can be used to enhance the surface scratch-resistance of PMMA.Group A contains the major component of tetraethoxy silane (TEOS) and methyltrimethoxy silane (MTMS),supplying withγ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane (KH-560),γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (KH-570) and isopropyl alcohol.Group B contains hydrochloride,water and condensation catalyst.Group A and group B can be preserved for 6 months without any change at room temperature.The coating is prepared through mixing A and B at a proper ratio.The influence of the ratio between TEOS and MTMS,kinds of solvents,contents of water,hydrochloride and additives on the resulting coating and its properties are discussed in this paper.The final coating has 13% solid content.A transparent film on PMMA is made by using dip-coating technique.The coating on PMMA has a pencil hardness as high as 6H,with an adhesive property of grade 1 and transmittance of 94.8%.

Abstract:The effects of titanium content on the optical and mechanical properties of silica–titania hard optical films by the sol-gel technique using γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, methyltrimethoxysilane, and tetrapropylorthotitanate as starting materials are studied. Thermal gravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy are used to investigate the optical and structural properties of the films. The results indicate that crack-free and high transparency silica–titania film with a thickness more than 0.6 μm can be obtained by a single spin-coating process after a heat treatment at 500 °C. The hardness and Young’s modulus of the films are characterized by a nanoindenter and they show a linear dependence on titanium content. Hardness as high as 6.60 GPa is obtained in a 0.5 M titanium content film and heat treated at 800 °C. It is proposed that the high hardness of the film may be related to the carbon and titanium content in the film.

Abstract:Thin films of TiO2/SiO2/organically modified silane (ORMOSIL) composite material were prepared by the sol–gel spin coating technique. Acid catalyzed solutions of ÿ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane mixed with tetraethoxysilane and tetrapropylorthotitanate were used as precursors. Ellipsometry, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy have been used to investigate the optical and structural properties of the composite films. Ellipsometry results showed that the film became thinner as the titanium content increased. A refractive index in the range of 1.52–1.61 at the optical wavelength of 633 nm was obtained by varying the molar ratio between silica and titanium. UV–vis transmission spectroscopy results showed that low absorption and high transparency (in the visible range) waveguide films could be obtained at a low temperature. Raman spectroscopy results indicated that the composite film with high titanium content contained amorphous carbon phases after being baked in air directly at a temperature of 500°C or higher. The hardness and Young's modulus of the films were characterized by a nanoindenter and they showed a dependence on the heat-treatment temperature as well as the titanium molar fraction. A film hardness of 9.0 GPa was observed in a high titanium content film heat-treated at 800°C.
One-step sol–gel preparation of PDMS–silica ORMOSILs as environment-resistant and crack-free thick antireflective coatings

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)–silica ORMOSIL (organically modified silicate) sols were prepared by a one-pot sol–gel process using tetraethyl orthosilicate as an inorganic precursor and hydroxyl-terminated PDMS as an organic modifier, and antireflective (AR) coatings were prepared with these sols by dip coating. It was found that the addition of PDMS to silica sols significantly increased the viscosity and the controllable viscosity range of the silica sols, affording us a simple route to prepare very thick AR coatings with controlled thickness by a single deposition step. The coated fused silica substrates retained very high transmission of up to 99.9% at a determined wavelength. The addition of PDMS to the silica sols improved the hydrophobicity and abrasion-resistance of the coating, and prevented to some extent the coating from cracking which occurred in a pure inorganic thick AR coating. The PDMS–silica ORMOSIL AR coatings are stable after standing for 2 months at room temperature in an environment of 95% relative humidity. The relationship between structure and properties of the coatings is discussed considering the particle growth mechanism.

Abstract:Tribological properties of the TiO2, doped TiO2, Al2O3 and SiO2 thin films prepared by different sol-gel processes are reported. The results indicate that doping deteriorates the wear resistance of TiO2; organic modifier can improve the tribological property of Al2O3 significantly; and the SiO2 film prepared from inorganic salt sodium silicate registers much better wear resistance than that from ethyl orthosilicate.

Abstract:Methyl-situ-modified silica sols were obtained by hydrolysis and co-condensation reactions occurred in base-catalyzed system by carefully controlling the sol-gel process of Methyltriethoxysilane(MTES) and Tetraethoxysilane(TEOS).Hydrophobic-antireflective silica film was then prepared by dipping-coating technique from the modified sols.As a result,the hydrophobicity of antireflective coating was highly improved.The properties of the films were characterized with atomic force microscope(AFM),ultraviolet-visible spectrum(UV-Vis) and contact angle analyzer measurement.An Nd:YAG laser(1 064 nm,1 ns) was used to irradiate the film by R on 1 method and the damage thresholds were measured.In addition,comparison was carried out between organically modified coating and pure silica coating.The results showed that the hydrophobicity and laser damage resistance of the coating were greatly improved by proper modification and high transmission was maintained.

Abstract:With zirconium oxychloride and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(KH-550) as precursor, the hybrid film composed of zirconia and organosilicone was prepared on polycarbonate through co-condensation reactions by sol-gel method. The structure and properties of films were studied by TG/DTA, FTIR, UV-VIS, metallographic microscope and pencil hardness test. The results show that the cross-linked inorganic structure endcapped with organic groups formed on the PC by the co-condensation reaction, whose base backbone is composed of Si—O—Si, Si—O—Zr and Zr—O—Zr network structure. When the molar ratio of KH-550 to zirconium oxychloride is above 2, the transparency and surface morphology are excellent. The proper molar ratio of zirconium oxychloride to water is between 80:1 and 20:1. The hardness of PC increases from 2B to H after coated, apart with a good coating adhesion of films to the substrate.

Abstract:Sol-gel processing of acid-catalyzed tetrabutoxytitanate, 3-glycidyl propyl trimethoxisilane and monomeric methyl methacrylate to produce titania-silica sol-gel optical coatings and matrix materials has been systematically studied. The coatings were deposited by dip-coating technique on glass substrates from a polymeric solutions,Pseudo-ternary phase diagram were used to outline the regions of stability of the Ti(OC4H9)(4)-C2H5OH-H2O-HAC and Ti(OC4H9)(4)-GPTMS-C2H5OH-H2O-HAC system respectively. It was found that the stability of the system depend on the compositions, especially the molar ratio of [H2O]/[Ti(OC4H9)(4)]. The use of GPTMS allows a thicker coatings than is possible with the sol-gel films prepared from non-organically modified alkoxides.

Abstract:The modified silicate hybrid coatings with different content of hydroxyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and nano-SiO2 were synthesized via sol-gel process, where PDMS acted as organic component precursor and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as inorganic component precursor in the presence of dibutyl tin dilaurate (DBTL) catalyst. The hybrid sols were coated on the concrete bases. And by the measurements of infrared spectroscopy, contact angle and SEM, the influence of different content of PDMS and nano-SiO2 on the coating's hydrophobicity was discussed. The results show that PDMS and TEOS are combined by Si-O-Si which is a chemical bond and the adding of PDMS can improve the hybrid coating's hydrophobicity. The maximum improvement in contact angle of PDMS modified silica coatings were 23 degrees (50%PDMS). The adding of nano-SiO2 has an evident improvement in contact angle but only when the amount of nano-SiO2 were enough, the maximum improvement is 26 degrees (8%Nano-SiO2)
Research of High-hardness and Wear-resistant SiO2 Film Coating on Acrylic Substrates

Abstract:Acrylic (PMMA) possesses excellent optical transparency, good chemical stability as well as many other merits such as the feasibilities in dyeing and manufacturing. But its poor hardness and wear resistance restrict its industrialized applications. In order to improve the hardness and wear resistance, SiO2 films were coated on PMMA substrates by both dip coating method and aerosol spraying method in this work. Heating curing method was carried out after the coating of SiO2 film, and consequently, the mechanical properties, optical properties and surface morphology were characterized and compared. The experimental results showed that the SiO2 films prepared by aerosol spraying method has a better performance in both hardness and wear resistance, compared with the films prepared by dip coating method. In the optimized conditions, the hardness of the PMMA was improved from 3H to similar to 8H, and the non-abrasion rubbing times increased from less than 100 times to 5000 times with a loading of 500g weight after the coating of SiO2 film, indicating the improvement of the wear resistance.

Abstract:Thin films of Al2O3 and modified Al2O3 were prepared on a glass substrate by a dip-coating process from specially formulated aqueous sols. The tribological properties of the as-prepared thin films sliding against an Si3N4 ball were evaluated on a one-way reciprocating friction and wear tester. The worn surface morphologies and chemical compositions of the films were examined by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) of dried sols were performed to explore the thermal events occurring during the annealing process of the sol-gel Al2O3 films. The wear mechanisms of the films are discussed based on SEM observation of the worn surface morphologies. As the results, modified sol-gel Al2O3 films are of higher wear resistance than the unmodified one. Meanwhile, the wear life of the modified films is correlated to the additive amount in the starting aqueous sol. In other words, the higher the additive amount in the starting aqueous gel, the longer the wear life of the sol-gel Al2O3 film. SEM observation of the morphologies of worn film surfaces indicates that wear of glass is characteristic of brittle fracture and severe abrasion. Wear of unmodified Al2O3 film is dominated by microfracture and abrasion, while that of modified films by plastic deformation and/or microcracking.
Effects of solvents on the tribological behaviour of sol–gel Al2O3 films

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) of precursor gels were performed to explore the thermal events occurring during the annealing process of the sol–gel Al2O3 films. The morphologies of the unworn and worn surfaces of the films were analyzed by atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical composition of the film was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The tribological properties of the films sliding against Si3N4 ball were evaluated on a one-way reciprocating friction and wear tester. AFM and XPS results confirm that the solvents can influence the structure and composition of the film significantly. The film from ethanol solution process shows longer wear life than the one from distilled water solution, especially under lower load. The added polyethylene glycol (PEG) modifier in sols generates totally different effects on the tribological behaviour of the films with respect to solvents. The addition of PEG to ethanol solution deteriorates the wear resistance of the corresponding film. Differently, the wear resistance of the modified film from aqueous solution is significantly improved. Actually, the modified film from water solution shows the best wear resistance among all the films. The wear mechanisms of the films are discussed based on SEM observation of the worn surface morphologies. Results show that brittle fracture and severe abrasion dominates the wear of glass substrate. The wear of the film from aqueous solution is characteristic of micro-fractures, the corresponding modified film shows better plasticity and fewer micro-cracks, whereas, the wear of the film from ethanol solution was characterized by abrasive and slight plastic deformation, and the corresponding modified one shows evidence of abrasive and brittle fracture.

Abstract:We report the preparation of sol-gel waveguide films based on a newly developed recipe to incorporate organic molecules into the inorganic sol-gel glass matrix. The film was derived from a sol that has a higher titanium content in an organically modified silane (ORMOSIL), namely, ÿ-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. We have shown that using spin-coating and low temperature baking, a single coating layer can have a thickness of more than 1.5 μm. When such a single layer film is deposited on a microscope glass slide or a piece of silicon with a buffercladding layer, it is able to support the guiding of optical waves. We have characterized the film using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermal gravimetric analysis. differential thermal analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and have studied the properties of the waveguide film, including the microstructural properties. the chemical bonding properties, and the optical properties. Based on these experimental results, we found that a heat-treatment at a temperature slightly below 200°C is necessary to attain a dense pore-free film. It has also been noted that a purely inorganic and crack-free silica-titania film can be obtained after baking the titania-ORMOSIL composite film at 500°C or higher.
Influence of Zirconia and Organic Additives on Mechanical and Electrochemical Properties of Silica Sol-Gel Coatings

Abstract:This paper presents the result of the investigation of organically modified silica (ORMOSIL)-zirconia coatings used to enhance their protective properties, namely corrosion and scratch resistance. Two different materials, i.e., SiO2/ZrO2 and SiO2/GPTMS/ZrO2, were synthesized, measured, and analyzed to find the difference in the used organosilane precursor (dimethyldiethoxysilane and (3-glycidoxypropyl)trimethoxysilane, respectively). SiO2/ZrO2 coatings showed higher hardness than SiO2/GPTMS/ZrO2. Moreover, the value of polarization resistance (Rp) for SiO2/GPTMS/ZrO2 coated 316L steel relative to the uncoated one was obtained. It was nearly 84 times higher. The coating delamination was observed with load 16N. Additionally, the corrosion mitigation for 316L coated by SiO2/GPTMS/ZrO2 was observed even after extended exposure to corrosion agents.

Tribological behavior of sol–gel TiO2 films on glass

Abstract:TiO2 thin films were grown on a glass substrate by sol–gel and dip-coating processes from specially formulated sols, followed by annealing at 460°C. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC) of dried sols were performed to explore the thermal events occurring during the annealing process of the sol–gel TiO2 films. The chemical states of some typical elements in the target films were detected by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The morphologies of the original and worn surfaces of the samples were analyzed by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tribological properties of TiO2 thin films sliding against AISI52100 steel and Si3N4 ball were evaluated on a reciprocating friction and wear tester. As the results, the target film was obtained and reaction may have taken place between the film and the glass substrate. TiO2 films are superior in reducing friction and resisting wear compared with the glass substrate. SEM observation of the morphologies of worn surfaces indicates that the wear of glass is characteristic of brittle fracture and severe abrasion. Differently, abrasion, plastic deformation and micro-crack dominate the wear of TiO2 films. The superior friction reduction and wear resistance of TiO2 films are attributed to slight plastic deformation as well as good adhesion of the film to the substrate.
