Abstract:A novel epoxy resin containing imide and naphthyl groups was synthesized, and characterized using NMR, NMR, FT-IR spectra and elemental analyses. The curing behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) as curing agent. The physical properties of the cured polymer were evaluated with dynamic thermal mechanical analysis (DMTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the cured polymer exhibited higher glass transition temperature (Tg) and better thermal stability compared with those commercial available heat resistant epoxy resins.

Abstract:N-phenyl maleimide modified novolac resin was synthe sized by condensation polymerization of a mixture of N-phenyl maleimide and formaldehyde by slowly feeding phenol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The polymerization conditions were optimized to obtain the high reaction conversion of PMI and proper viscosity of PPMF. It was found that reaction competition an d conversion ratio for PMI were enhanced with increasing feeding time of phenol . As the reaction reflux time was increased, the conversion of PMI and the visc osity of PPMF were increased. At a higher reaction temperature or more amount o f PMI, the conversion of PMI was decreased. The resins were characterized by FT IR, 13C NMR and thermal analysis. It was found that the N-phenyl male imide groups were combined in the chains of novolacs and the N-phenyl malei mide content of PPMF could reach around 33%. DSC curve revealed two curing peak s,of which one at around 150℃ was attributed to the condensation reaction of me thylol groups formed in minor quantities on the phenyl rings,and the other at ar ound 250℃ was attributed to the addition curing reaction of the maleimide group s. TGA analysis showed that the cured PPMF had better thermal properties.

Abstract:Epoxy and maleimide resins are two of the major thermosetting resins used in high performance structural materials. The hybrid resins of epoxy and maleimide should bring about the characteristics of these two resins together in a single resin compound, and result in materials having attractive properties. This article reviews our recent efforts in developing new epoxy/maleimide resins. The resins obtained showed low meting point, wide processing windows and good solubility in common solvents to indicate their good processing properties. High glass transition temperatures above 210 degrees C, excellent thermal stability and self-extinguishing behavior were also observed with the prepared resins.

Abstract:Bismaleimide oligopolymer resins have been widely used as insulating material, due to its outstanding mechanical properties, higher thermal stability. However, it has some shortcomings that the melt body viscosity is too heavy and toughness is poor. This article describes the preparation of soluble bismaleimide oligopolymer by chemical imidization method 3,3'-diethyl-4,4'-diamino diphenyl methane (DEDADPM), pyromellitic anhydride (PMDA) and maleic anhydride (MA), with the organic solvent (N,N'-dimethyl acetamide) in the room temperature. The mole proportion of DEDADPM, PMDA and MA is 10, 9, 2. And, unsaturated polyester and cross-linking agent diallyl phthalate (DAP) is used to modificate this system, its some of properties are improved. The result of FR-IR demonstrated that imide ring has already been formed. Heat decomposition temperature (Td) is 400-500 C. The tensile strength (10% DAP) is 106 MPa. This system can be used as a premium grade matrix resin of composite material

Abstract:Three novel allyl–maleimide monomers (i.e., A2B, AB and AB2) were designed, synthesized and thermally cured to yield a series of high-performance allyl–maleimide resins. All the monomers obtained are readily soluble in common organic solvents enabling an easy solution processing. The thermal properties of the three monomers were studied by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A2B and AB showed fairly low melting temperature (Tm<90°C) and wide processing window ranging from 90°C to 260°C. The thermal stability of the cured allyl–maleimide resins (i.e., PA2B, PAB and PAB2) was studied by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites based on the cured allyl–maleimide resins. PA2B and PAB2 showed good glass transition temperatures (Tg>270°C) and their corresponding composites showed high bending modulus (E′>1900MPa). Allyl-compound-modified BMI resins based on AB monomer were prepared. Rheometer revealed that the processability of the prepolymer (BR–AB-pre) was improved by the addition of AB monomer. The cured BMI resins (BR and BR–AB) showed good thermal stability (Td>400°C, both in nitrogen and in the air), high glass transition temperature (Tg>320°C), and good mechanical properties and low water uptake (<2.6%, 120h).

Abstract:A hybrid monomer of 4-(N-maleimidophenyl)glycidylether (MPGE), which possesses both oxirane ring and maleimide curable groups, was first synthesized from N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)maleimide and epichlorohydrin by using benzyltrimethylammonium chloride as a catalyst. MPGE was then cured with amine compounds (DDM and DICY) and diethylphosphite (DEP) to result in crosslinking networks. The curing kinetics and mechanisms were studied. High glass transition temperature, good thermal stability, and attractive flame retardance were observed for the prepared resins. These thermal and flame retardant properties of the cured resins were further enhanced by using DEP as the curing agent, which incorporated phosphorus into the cured resins.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (CuAAC) was used to synthesize a new series of maleimides with triazole ring moieties (triazole-maleimides, TA-MIs). The physical and thermal properties of the obtained TA-MIs were studied. The TA-MIs showed good solubility in non-proton strong polar solvents such as DMF, DMAc and NMP. The polymerization of TA-MIs can be carried out at a temperature ranged from 140°C to 250°C. Td5 of the resulted poly(TA-MIs) reached 335–345°C under nitrogen.

Abstract:Poly(ether imide) (PEI) is a high-performance polymer with outstanding thermal stability, mechanical strength, and processability, but a critical drawback of poor solvent resistance. Exposure to solvents including chloroform, dimethylformamide, dichloromethane, and N-methyl pyrrolidone severely compromises the mechanical and thermal performances. Herein, we report a method for preparing thermally crosslinked PEI (X-PEI) from azide-terminated PEI (N-3-PEI-N-3) synthesized via a one-pot diazotization-azidation reaction. X-PEI affords unprecedented solvent resistance unpossessed by conventional PEIs, as well as solution processability unrivaled by counterpart high-performance polymers such as polyimide. The glass transition temperature, storage modulus, and swelling ratio correlate positively with crosslinking density, which is determined by the molar mass and azide concentration of N-3-PEI-N-3. This work advances the chemistry of high-performance polymers. The method is generic and applicable to other engineering polymers.

Abstract:A new high-temperature resin system based on methylene dianiline bismaleimide (MDA BMI) chemistry is studied. This is a two-component resin system which is modified by 2,2'-methylene-bis[4-methyl-6-(2-propenyl)] phenol (MBMPP) and has excellent thermal mechanical properties and good toughness characteristics. This paper discusses in detail some of the characteristics of the prepolymer by reacting the two components in addition to the cured system's properties. The prepolymer has very good stability at 100-120 degrees C with very minimal molecular weight increase,The reaction order for curing prepolymer is almost 1. The activation energy of the curing reaction is 74.12 KJ/mol. The flexural strength and modulus of the cured modified MDA-BMI and their retention at 250 degrees C are 124 and 3774.6 MPa and 69 and 78%, respectively. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract:The realization of the synthesis of melt-processable high-performance polyimide resin is of great interest. Herein, we prepared a new class of bisphthalonitrile functional bisimides used for polyimide precursors through 4,4'-bisphenol A dianhydride (BPADA) and various dicyanoaromatic monoamines, which were synthesized from aminophenols with 4-nitrophthalonitrile via a nucleophilic substitution reaction. Their structures were confirmed by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, and WXRD analyses. The obtained polyimide precursors exhibited much lower melt temperature and good solubility in diverse solvents compared to traditional ones. These cured resins based on curing accelerator 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) achieved high glass transition temperature values (Tg) between 261-287 oC and char yields above 63 wt.%, depending on their backbone structures. Additionally, the lap shear strengths (LSS) were in the range of 15.4-24.4 MPa at 25oC and the highest strength at 300oC was observed in para-linked prepolymers derived from 4-amino-3,5-xylenol, suggesting such resin could be potentially applied as high temperature structural adhesives.

Abstract:With the goal of improving processability of imide oligomers and achieving of high temperature carbon fiber composite, a series of Thermosetting Matrix Resin solutions (TMR) were prepared by polycondensation of aromatic diamine (3,4′-oxybisbenzenamine, 3,4-ODA) and diester of biphenylene diacid (BPDE) using monoester of 4-phenylethynylphthalic acid (PEPE) as end-capping agent in ethyl alcohol as solvent to afford phenylethynyl-endcapped poly(amic ester) resins with calculated molecular weight (Calc’d Mw) of 1500–10,000. Meanwhile, a series of reactive diluent solutions (RDm) with Calc’d Mw of 600–2100 were also prepared derived from aromatic diamine (4,4′-oxybisbenzenamine, 4,4-ODA), diester of asymmetrical biphenylene diacid (α-BPDE) and monoester of 4-phenylethynylphthalic acid (PEPE) in ethyl alcohol. Then, the TMR solution was mixed with the RDm solution at different weight ratios to afford a series of A-staged thermosetting blend resin (TMR/RDm) solutions for carbon fiber composites. Experimental results demonstrated that the thermosetting blend resins exhibited improved melt processability and excellent thermal stability. After being thermally treated at 200 °C/1 h, the B-staged TMR/RDm showed very low melt viscosities and wider processing window. The minimum melt viscosities of ≤50 Pa·s was measured at ≤368 °C and the temperature scale at melt viscosities of ≤100 Pa·s were detected at 310–390 °C, respectively. The thermally cured neat resins at 380 °C/2 h showed a great combination of mechanical and thermal properties, including tensile strength of 84.0 MPa, elongation at breakage of 4.1%, and glass transition temperature (Tg) of 423 °C, successively. The carbon fiber reinforced polyimide composite processed by autoclave technique exhibited excellent mechanical properties both at room temperature and 370 °C. This study paved the way for the development of high-temperature resistant carbon fiber resin composites for use in complicated aeronautical structures.

Abstract:Polyamideimide (PAI) resins have a wide range of applications. It is significant to explore novel and efficient synthesis methods. This paper describes a method for the rapid synthesis of branched PAIs in a microreactor using 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,2,4-benzoic acid anhydride (TMA) as substrates. The isocyanate group reacts with the amide bond to build the branched structure. A high molar ratio of substrate helps to form more branched structures. High molar ratios also lead to high molecular weight products with narrow distribution, where the number average molecular weight of PAI-1.35 is as high as 1828.14 kg/mol and the molecular weight distribution index is only 1.09. Some oligomers are present in the products obtained at low molar ratios, which affect the mechanical and thermal properties of the products. Curing with epoxy resin can form a bulk structure and eliminate the effect of oligomers. The PAI films obtained after curing have excellent mechanical and thermal properties.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of phenylethynyl end-capped polyimide oligomers designated PI-1 and PI2 derived from 4-phenylethynylphthalic anhydride(4-PEPA),1,4-bis(4′-amino-2′-trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzene(BTPB),2,3,3′,4′-biphenyltetracarboxcylic anhydride(a-BPDA) and 4-phenylethynyl aniline(p-PDA) are described in this paper,with particular emphasis on melt viscosity stability and thermal properties.PI-1 oligomers show low complex melt viscosity(<1Pa·s) at 280℃ and are stable at this temperature,which mean PI-1 oligomers can be processed by resin transfer molding techniques.The cured resins of PI-1 and PI-2 exhibit high glass transition temperatures(>400℃ DMA tanδ) and high 5% weight loss temperatures(>520℃).

Abstract:Bismaleimides, having epoxy backbone linkages and various bridging groups, were prepared through reacting 4-(N-maleimidophenyl)glycidylether with various biphenol and silandiol compounds. The preparation route provided a convenient approach of introducing specific groups into the bridging groups of bismaleimides to alter their properties. The prepared bismaleimides in this study exhibited good oranosolubility, low melting points, and wide processing windows, further to indicate their excellent processability. The cured polymers were found having high glass transition temperatures above 210 °C and good thermal stability over 350 °C. The polybismaleimide having silicon group, which showed fairly good thermo-oxidative stability and low amount of volatiles, were suitably being considered as flame retardant for other polymeric materials.

Abstract:A series of high-temperature resistant structural adhesives were prepared based on the copolymerization of 4,4′-bismaleimidediphenylmethane (BDM) and 2,2′-diallylbisphenol A (DABPA) together with a novel maleimide-capped polyetherimide containing cardo side groups (mPEI-C) as toughening agent. The chemical structure of the adhesives and their cured networks was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Their curing behavior and kinetics were analyzed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal properties, mechanical properties, bonding strength and moisture absorption behavior of the cured products were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), etc. The modified resin system with mPEI-C exhibit similar curing behavior, and the apparent activation energy ( E a ) and reaction order ( n) are equal to around 85.14 kJ/mol and 0.91, respectively. With increasing mPEI-C contends, the thermal stability is improved, the char yield is increased from 26.5% to 37.1%, and the glass transition temperatures have a slight decrease. The maximum flexural strength, impact strength and bonding strength are increased by 28.4%, 93.1% and 44.6%, respectively. The results of hygrothermal aging experiments exhibit the addition of mPEI-C has no obvious influence on the hygroscopicity of the modified resins.

Abstract:Curing process of ortho‐oxazine functionalized bismaleimide. In this study, two types of ortho‐oxazine functionalized bismaleimides with exceptional thermal properties and solubility were synthesized. The excellent solubility in many solvents is attributed to the stable twisted structure of the monomer. The monomer containing the cyano group showed enhanced solubility. It was found that the curing mode of ortho‐oxazine functionalized bismaleimide was autocatalytically cured. In situ FT‐IR spectroscopic studies indicated that the structure of bismaleimide resin undergoes a structural transformation at higher temperatures to form benzoxazole resin with enhanced thermal stability. The carbon residue rates of bismaleimide and benzoxazole resins at 800°C were 69% and 77%, respectively. The new bismaleimide and benzoxazole resins were analyzed using Microscale Combustion Calorimeter (MCC), and it was found that they also possess excellent flame‐retardant properties, specifically benzoxazole resin.

Abstract:Multifunctional compounds with pendent and terminal maleimide groups were prepared through the reaction of 4-maleimidobenzoic acid and 5-maleimidoisophthalic acid with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The ratios of the pendent maleimide groups to the terminal maleimide groups in the obtained compounds were varied to tailor the chain length and properties of the maleimide compounds. The maleimide group ratios, determined from differential scanning calorimetry, showed good coincidence with the values calculated from the charged monomer amounts. The good solubility and low softening points of the maleimide compounds indicated their good processability. High glass-transition temperatures (220 degreesC) were observed for the cured resins because of the relatively high crosslinking density. The curing reaction, thermal stability, and degradation behavior of the resins were also studied with differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Abstract:A novel bismaleimide matrix resin of amino-polythioetherimide (PTEI-N)/4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenyl methane (BDM)/2,2′-diallylbisphenol A (BA) was prepared. Mechanical measurements, dynamic thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and microanalyses were conducted to assess the mechanical properties, thermal resistance, and morphology of the modified resin. Results demonstrate that the addition of PTEI-N has significant effects on the mechanical properties of the BDM/BA system. Compared with the pure BDM/BA resin, the PTEI-N/BDM/BA system markedly improves the tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact strength, given an appropriate amount of PTEI-N. Scanning electron microscopic and energy-dispersive spectroscopic results show that PTEI-N is distributed uniformly in the BDM/BA system, and the interfacial compatibility between the PTEI-N and BDM/BA phase is excellent. TGA shows that the BDM/BA resin continues to exhibit good thermal resistance with a suitable dosage of PTEI-N. These changes in properties are closely correlated with the addition of PTEI-N. The PTEI-N/BDM/BA resin system shows potential applications in many fields.

Abstract:Thermosetting resins based on Meldrum's acid (MA) derivatives as monomers show high thermal stability and inherent low-dielectric constants. In this work, a multifunctional MA derivative (MA-bisF) possessing two MA and two furan groups is newly prepared. Characterization of MA-bisF has been carried out with Fourier transform infrared, H-1 NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Self-crosslinking MA-bisF results in the corresponding thermosetting resin mediating the addition reaction between ketene/ketene and ketene/furan groups. MA-bisF is also utilized as a modifier for bismaleimide (BMI) resins through polymerizing MA-bisF and BMI through Diels-Alder reaction. The corresponding crosslinked MA-bisF/BMI resin possesses a high content of fused-ring structure and a high crosslinking density, so as to exhibit high thermal stability (392 degrees C), high glass transition temperature (262 degrees C), high char yield (48 wt%), and a low-dielectric constant of 2.78 at 1 MHz. A new type of reactive polymers and the corresponding high-performance crosslinked resins has been demonstrated.
