Abstract:Soaking time and loading rate are the two important process parameters for semi-solid powder forming, which are next only to powder temperature. However, there have been few investigations on the influence of soaking time and loading rate on the semi-solid compression of porous material, which is an effective method for studying the deformation characteristics of semi-solid materials and is widely used to optimize the semi-solid forming processes. Therefore, the microstructures, grain size and shape factor, liquid fraction, relative densities and stress–strain curves of Al-4Cu-Mg alloy with a porosity of 30% compacted at different soaking time and loading rates were measured, and the strain rate sensitivity coefficient, the relationship between peak stresses and strain rates, and the processing map were calculated and analyzed. The results indicate that as the soaking time increases, the particle grows and the liquid fraction increases slightly, and the liquid distribution changes from dots in grains to concentrating on grain boundaries in powders, making the relative density increase basically and the peak stress decrease firstly and then increase slowly. Thus, the most suitable soaking time for semi-solid compression is 2 to 5 min. With the loading rate increasing, the particle size reduces first and then increases, the relative density decreases, while the peak stress basically raises, combining the action of powder breakage, grain coarsening and liquid flowing. The peak stress basically has a power relationship with the strain rate, and the processing map can be used to analyze porous semi-solid materials, which are verified to be consistent with the experimental results. Therefore, the optimal semi-solid forming parameters of Al-4Cu-Mg alloy powders are at a deformation rate ranging from 0.6 to 6 mm/s and at a temperature of 860 to 873 K.
