Abstract:Because of the effect of many factors in mesh generation,it is difficult to get accurate results in calculations of resistance and other hydrodynamic performance.In view of the CFD code(FLUENT software),in the paper it investigates the influential factors in mesh generation and discusses some mesh factors which influence ship hydrodynamic calculation.Through calculation and analysis,a solution of improving calculation is presented.The parameters applied to engineering actual computation are confirmed.Based on it,the ship resistance is calculated,which meets well with the test result.

Abstract:In the present work, the CFD software FLUENT is used to calculate the ship resistance and simulate the flow field around it. Comparison of the numerical results with experimental data of the ship without interceptor shows basically satisfactory agreement in the case of high-speed. In order to get the right parameters of the interceptor for the ship, some two dimensional calculation is taken to study the influence of interceptor with different size. The simulation of the three dimensional vessel with interceptor is also included, and the effect is discussed.

Abstract:In order to achieve consistent and agreeable results in resistance and other areas of hydrodynamic performance for hulls such as that of a catamaran,viscous computational fluid dynamics(CFD) methods were used,and a practical system of investigating the influential factors such as mesh gridding,choice of numerical methods,and turbulence models which affect the calculation results was developed.Through calculation and analysis,specifically with the CFD FLUENT code,an alternative set of computation parameters was suggested.Also,the application to a catamaran resulted in better agreement with corresponding model tests.

Abstract:A method for ship resistance prediction based on CFD computation is outlined, with ship form factor obtained by solving the viscosity resistance of double-model in turbulence flow theory and the wave making resistance in ideal flow theory. Comparing with the experimental results of series-60 and KCS advancing with different speeds, the new method of ship resistance prediction is economical, practical and meets the engineering needs.

Abstract:ObjectivesThis paper aims to study the influencing factors and mechanisms of ship model resistance prediction uncertainty, as well as proposing corresponding suppression methods. MethodsResistance tests and local flow measurements on the flow around KCS models of 1.725 m and 3.450 m are carried out in a circulating water channel. The effects of the model scale on the resistance predictions are obtained by comparing the results of the two tests. Numerical simulations of the flow around the 3.450 m model in an unbounded water area and circulating water channel are achieved. The results under the two conditions are compared to analyze the blockage effect and validate the simplified Tamura correction formula. Numerical simulations of the flow around the 3.450 m model under different turbulence intensities in a circulating water channel are then carried out to analyze the effects of turbulence intensities on resistance predictions. ResultsThe results show that the resistance prediction uncertainty of small ship models due to statistics collections and inflow uniformity can be amplified if the inflow velocity is too low. This demonstrates that the blockage effect of the large model could increase hull sinkage, pressure gradients on the hull and wave amplitudes, leading to an increase in ship resistance. The average difference between the resistances predicted in the unbounded water area and circulating water channel is 4.56% without correcting for the blockage effect. The difference is reduced to 2.25% with the correction of the simplified Tamura formula. The total resistance increases by an average of 3.75% as the turbulence intensity increases from 1% to 2%. It is observed that the decay of turbulence intensity along the flow direction is linear from the entrance to the bow. ConclusionsThis study shows that reasonably large models should be used wherever possible and the turbulence intensity should be strictly controlled to reduce the uncertainty of ship resistance tests in circulating water channels. In addition, the simplified Tamura formula should be used to correct the blockage effect, and the appropriate inflow turbulence intensity should be used in numerical prediction according to the dissipation of the turbulence intensity.

Abstract:The prediction of a ship’s resistance especially the viscous wave-making resistance is an important issue in CFD applications. In this paper, the resistances of six ships from hull 1 to hull 6 with different hull forms advancing in still water are numerically studied using the solver naoe-FOAM-SJTU, which was developed based on the open source code package OpenFOAM. Different components of the resistances are computed and compared while considering two speed conditions (12 kn and 16 kn). The resistance of hull 3 is the smallest while that of hull 5 is the largest at the same speed. The results show hull 3 is a good reference for the design of similar ships, which can provide some valuable guidelines for hull form optimization.

Abstract:Owing to the special working characteristics and operation requirements, lots of working ships have notches in different sizes and shapes in their hulls. In order to study the resistance performance of the vessel with notches, a series of model resistance tests were performed in respect to the 4 500 m3/h cutter suction dredger, and the tests were simulated based on the computational fluid dynamics software FLUENT. Based on analysis to the experimental data and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculation results, the change of the flow field and the resistance performance caused by the notches were studied, and the reliability of the software in simulation of viscous flow around the hull was proved. It provides the basis for the future study and the design optimization of this kind of working ships.

Abstract:In order to get some useful parameters for grid generation of catamaran, the CFD software FLUENT is used to investigate the main effects of grid generation on flow field calculation. The influences of some elements are investigated with a series of calculations in the present paper, and some alteratives are proposed. The proposed alteratives based on the analysis of the effects are used for a catamaran resistance calculation, comparisons of the calculated results with experimental data show good agreement. It shows that the research result of this paper is useful for the numerical calculation of catamaran.
A numerical study of resistance and viscous flow around typical benchmark surface ship hull

Abstract:The viscous flow around two kinds of typical benchmark surface ship model moving ahead is solved by using the RANS equations based on the PISO (Pressure Implicit with Splitting of Operators) scheme and the SST k-ω turbulence model. The free surface is simulated with single phase Level set method. Firstly,a mathematical benchmark hull model,Wigley hull,is taken into account,grid convergence and the influences of time step and near-wall grid parameters on the calculation results are numerically investigated. Then,the flow cases with a series of Froude numbers between 0.25 and 0.408 are performed with appropriate grid and reasonable time step. The values of drag coefficient and the wave profile obtained by the presented method are in good agreement with the experimental data,which verifies the reliability of the presented algorithm. Then,another benchmark modern complex ship hull (DTMB5415) is considered,the numerical results of total drag coefficient and the wave profile coincide with the experimental results. The numerical results and analysis in this paper prove the reliability of the presented scheme and the program codes,providing some references and suggestions for the future use of this method on simulation of ship resistance with free surface and other properties research.

Abstract:With the development of CFD technology and the improvement of computing capacity,CFD is playing an increasingly important role in ship design.However,at present CFD computations of ships are typically performed in model scale due to the lack of experimental results in full-scale,and the increasingly complexity of numerical simulation at very high Reynolds numbers that RANS is hard to solve.In this paper,a RANS/DES solver for naval architecture and ocean engineering named naoe-FOAM-SJTU,which is developed from OpenFOAM,is applied to carry out the numerically simulation of modeland full-scale VLCC.For model scale computation results,we adopt the three-dimensional extrapolation method to get full-scale resistance,and also full-scale calculation is carried out by CFD method at the cruise speed directly.Results are compared with the experimental results/three-dimensional extrapolation results.The effect of surface roughness is considered in full-scale computations.Analysis results show reliability and validity of our IDDES method in ship resistance prediction.This paper also made a discussion on comparison of flow fields of model-and full-scale VLCC.

Abstract:Because of the big difference between high-speed catamaran and low-speed ships, estimation of the resistance of high-speed catamaran with the methods used for low-speed ships will result in a serious error. In this paper various methods and CFD software are applied to calculate the total resistance of a 550t high-speed catamaran and compared with model tests. The method, in which viscous resistance and wave resistance is calculated separately, is more suitable to the estimation of the resistance for high-speed catamaran.

Abstract:<p>Results of ship resistance predictions obtained from towing tank experiments are affected by the method used to extrapolate from a model scale to a ship scale. Selection of method to determine a form factor is subjective and the extrapolation method is accurate for typical hull forms. For innovative hull forms the proper method for calculating the form factor is questionable. Moreover, the influence of the extrapolation method can be equally as important as the influence of a redesigned hull form itself. The paper presents novel numerical and experimental methods used to predict ship's total resistance in calm water. The results determined by towing tank experiments, full-scale CFD simulations and ship's sea trial measurements were compared. Depending on the method used, the determined form factor differed by 19%. As a result, the predicted calm water resistance varied from −6% to 11% relatively to sea trials data. For innovative hull forms in particular, full-scale CFD simulations should support the towing tank method. The results calculated by full-scale CFD varied from −10% to 4% relatively to sea trials data depending on the assumptions on hull roughness and turbulence model. The towing tank testing and full-scale CFD simulations can provide similar accuracy.</p>

Abstract:This paper predicts the ice-induced resistance on a container ship sailing in pack ice area by using a coupled method: the fluid flow is solved by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method, while the ship-ice and ice-ice interactions are simulated by Discrete Element Method (DEM). First, a sensitivity analysis of the contact model parameters in CFD-DEM is carried out, which shows that the friction coefficient and the restitution coefficient are the vital factors affecting the simulation accuracy. The numerical results are compared with the available model test data and the results estimated by empirical formulae to verify the numerical model, and good agreement among the results of ice resistance is achieved. Then, the process and the mechanism of ship-ice interaction are studied, which indicate that the collision, accumulation and extrusion of pack ice at the bow are the main factors causing the ice resistance. Finally, the validated numerical model is used to investigate systematically the influence of the ice field parameters and the combined effects of different parameters on ice resistance. The results indicate that there is a positive correlation between the ice resistance and the ice field parameters, and the effects of ship speed and ice size are more remarkable.

Abstract:The air intake system resistance directly influences the performance of ships’ power system.To investigate the issue,this paper establishes a discrete numerical model regarding the flow field of a ship air intake system.Specifically,the Navier-Stokes equation is first solved using FLUENT,and the results under different working conditions are then discussed.It is observed that as the vertical hatch distance in creases,the resistance coefficient drops.By adding a commutating board,the local resistance coefficient as well as the total resistance coefficient are lowered by 8% compared to the original design.Furthermore,the effects the inlet temperature on resistance coefficient are seen to be vital:when the inlet temperature is increased from 15 ℃ to 40 ℃,the resistance coefficient decreases by 8.5%.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to gain a better understanding of the hydrodynamics of a typical Argentinian fishing vessel in calm water. It is focused on the evaluation of total ship resistance and its components for different draughts. The 1978 ITTC Power Prediction method is used to predict total ship resistance from experiments carried out at the University of Buenos Aires towing tank. To conduct a more detailed evaluation of the flow around this hull, numerical studies at model scale are carried out with the open-source code OpenFOAM V10 and validated against experimental results. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method together with Volume of Fluid (VOF) are used for the numerical procedure. The validated CFD model not only can provide more detailed information about the ship's hydrodynamics than the EFD results but also allows for the exploration of the improvement in ship power prediction by using combined CFD-EFD methodologies. This work numerically calculates the form factor by using a double-body configuration and discusses the possibility of combining EFD results with this CFD form factor in order to improve total force prediction for this kind of ships.
