Abstract:A green BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte layer was deposited on porous anode substrate (BZCY:NiO=35:65, in weight ratio) by a suspension spray. In this process, the suspension was prepared by directly ball-milling the mixed BaCO3, CeO2, ZrO2 and Y2O3 powders in ethanol for 24h. Then the bi-layers were co-sintered at 1400°C for 5h in air to obtain dense and uniform electrolyte membrane in the thickness of 10μm. With Nd0.7Sr0.3MnO3−δ cathode, a fuel cell was assembled. It was tested from 600°C to 700°C using humid hydrogen as fuel and air as oxidant. The cell at 700°C exhibited 1.02V for open circuit voltage (OCV), 450mW/cm2 for peak output and 0.18Ωcm2 for electrode polarizations under open circuit conditions, respectively. The results indicate that it is feasible to fabricate thin electrolyte membrane for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) by this simple, cost-effective and efficient technique.

Abstract:A direct hydrazine fuel cell using H2O2 as the oxidizer has been developed. The N2H4/H2O2 fuel cell is assembled by using Ni–Pt/C composite catalyst as the anode catalyst, Au/C as the cathode catalyst, and Nafion membrane as the electrolyte. Both anolyte and catholyte show significant influences on cell voltage and cell performance. The open-circuit voltage of the N2H4/H2O2 fuel cell reaches up to 1.75V when using alkaline N2H4 solution as the anolyte and acidic H2O2 solution as the catholyte. A maximum power density of 1.02Wcm−2 has been achieved at operation temperature of 80°C. The number of electrons exchanged in the H2O2 reduction reaction on Au/C catalyst is 2.

Abstract:In this paper, we presented a simple direct borohydride fuel cell technology in which a MnO2 was used as cathode catalyst and a hydrogen storage alloy used as anode catalyst containing a hydrogen-releasing agent borohydride alkaline electrolyte solution. The new type fuel cell has high electrochemical performance: the average work voltage is about 0.87V, and the discharge capacity is 3700mAh/g (for KBH4) at a discharge current density of 5mA/cm2, corresponding to a utilization of 7.5 electrons per BH4-1. The maximal powder density 70mW/cm2 is obtained for this cell at a discharge current density of 180mA/cm2. The new type alkaline fuel cell overcome the problem of the conventional fuel cell in which both a high cost noble metal catalysts and expensive ion exchange membrane was used.

Abstract:In this study, aqueous borohydride solutions were employed to fuel a micro cell. Electrochemical performance of the micro borohydride fuel cell was tested at ambient conditions without any auxiliary facilities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses were performed to characterize the cell performance. Both anion and cation exchange membranes were tried to separate the fuel from the cathode. Membrane properties were found to be a decisive factor for cell performance. A maximum power density of 40mW/cm2 at room temperature was achieved when the Nafion NRE211 membrane was used. Hydrogen evolution at the anode side resulted from the competitive hydrolysis reaction influenced cell performance by obstructing transfer of the electrolyte. The cell also demonstrated promising performance even when an Ag cathode was used.

Abstract:For the first time, a ceramic lithium super-ionic conductor (LISICON) film has been employed to separate the oxidation of BH4- in an alkaline medium from the reduction of H2O2 in an acidic medium, forming a direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) with a high stable cell voltage of 2.1 V. This may be an interesting topic for future study on borohydride fuel cells.

Abstract:Sodium hypophosphite is newly reported as fuel for direct liquid fuel cell, hoping to replace methanol and borohydride for its power performance, safety and low-cost. However, the hydrogen evolution problem during discharge has seriously restricted the widespread use of direct hypophosphite fuel cell. Herein, we report a new design of anode electrode assembly, bringing in an additional layer for hydrogen oxidation above the original catalyst layer, which eventually increases the Faradaic efficiency and energy efficiency in different discharge conditions. The analyzing methods by P-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (P-31 NMR) are also carefully discussed. The new designed membrane electrode assembly (MEA) reaches 90% Faradaic efficiency when the fuel is discharged to 0 V and the strategy may bring new solution for other biproduct-generating fuels in direct liquid fuel cells.

Abstract:Direct borohydride fuel cell (DBFC) as a liquid type fuel cell is promising for portable applications. In this study, we report our recent progress in the micro-fuel cell development. A power density of 80mWcm−2 was achieved in passive mode at ambient conditions when using the anode containing nickel, carbon-supported Pd catalyst and Nafion ionomer. Current efficiency was also found to be greatly increased due to the use of Nafion rather than polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Based on improvements on single cell performance, planar multi-cell power modules were assembled to study the feasibility of making high-performance and practical DBFC power units. A power of 2.5W was achieved in a fully passive eight-cell module after significantly simplifying cell structure.

Abstract:Direct liquid fuel cells (DLFCs) are promising power sources for future portable, wearable or implantable electronic devices owing to their high energy density and low emissions. Large efforts have been given for the development of DLFCs since 1990s, however the wide spread commercialization of DLFCs is still limited by the high cost coming from the expensive noble metal catalysts and proton exchange membranes. Furthermore, the safety risks related to organic fuels (methanol, ethanol and formic acid), such as toxicity and flammability, bring up tremendous consideration in fuel cell design, fuel distribution and transportation [1]. Finally, the emission of CO2 is inevitable by using organic fuels, which escalates to Green House Effect. In this work, we proposed a new category of inorganic fuels for DLFCs. Hypophosphite is a type of food additive, therefore no safety hazards at all, and is also a strong reductant whose electrochemical oxidation reactivity is strongly correlated to metallic palladium [2]. Moreover, the inorganic fuels could realize “Zero Emission” after “Burning”. From thermodynamic calculations, the theoretical cell voltage and volumetric energy density at 1M are 2.05 V and 188 Wh/L at standard conditions, which are comparable and even better than the data of DMFCs (Direct Methanol Fuel Cells). The unique electrochemical oxidation behavior of hypophosphites on Pd catalyst brings advantages in simplifying fuel cell structure and broadening our selections of cathodic catalysts for ORR (Oxygen Reduction Reaction). Herein, we report the investigation of catalyst design and cell design of a novel membrane-free Direct Hypophosphite Fuel Cell (DHPFC), which showed an open circuit voltage of 1.0 V and a maximum power density of 32 mW cm-2 under air flow at 25 oC. Abstract:Herein, cellulose paper substrates are used to establish capillary flow within its inherent capillaries to develop a microscale hydrogen fuel cell. Here, food‐grade Al foil is used to generate hydrogen and modified pencil graphite strokes are used as electrodes. Numerous experiments are conducted to optimize hydrogen generation with different parameters. The device, with optimized hydrogen generation parameters, provides a maximum open‐circuit voltage of 655 mV, a peak current of 475.56 μA/cm2, and a power density of approximately 100 μW/cm2. Summary In this work, a novel methodology is proposed to develop a microscale fuel cell using hydrogen as the primary agent. Herein, cellulose paper substrates are used to establish capillary flow within its inherent capillaries. Here, design, fabrication, assembly, optimization of hydrogen generation, and characterization of a paper‐based hydrogen fuel cell (PHFC) are demonstrated and analyzed. The developed PHFC uses hydrogen as fuel, which is generated in a mini and inbuilt rigid platform; and atmospheric oxygen is used as oxidant, and sulfuric acid as an electrolyte. Moreover, food‐grade aluminum foil is used with sodium hydroxide concentration solution as a hydrogen generation source. Further, an automated pencil stroke device is used to uniformly fabricate the graphite strokes on microporous cellulose. The graphite stroke electrodes are additionally modified with various catalyst materials (Ag‐nano ink, MnO2) to enhance the cell output power. Numerous experiments are conducted to optimize hydrogen generation with different parameters, such as Al masses, NaOH concentrations, and different electrodes. The PHFC with optimized hydrogen generation parameter provides a maximum open‐circuit voltage of 655 mV, a peak current of 475.56 ΜA/cm2, and a power density of approximately 100 ΜW/cm2 with Grade 1 cellulose paper as a channel and membrane.

Abstract:A TiO2 nanotube photoanode is introduced into H2O2-based fuel cells to improve their performance by utilizing light energy and biomass power. Upon UV illumination, the light-driven, membraneless, H2O2-based fuel cells exhibit a high open-circuit potential (OCP) of 0.595 V and stable power density of 90 μW cm–2. Abstract:Cellulose paper has been employed to develop pumpless microfluidic fuel cells. Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide as both the fuel and oxidant has attracted attention since it is eco-friendly for producing only water. However, low open-circuit voltage (OCV) and power density of reported H2O2 fuel cells due to the mixed potentials (simultaneous oxidation and reduction at the same electrode) preclude its applications. In this study, a H2O2 paper fuel cell with a gel-aided dual-electrolyte configuration has been proposed for the first time to solve this problem. An ion-conductive hydrogel has been sandwiched between the independent catholyte and anolyte flows to serve as part of the electrolyte. Its OCV has been elevated to 1 V and a high peak power density of 10.2 mW cm−2 has been achieved by toning the electrolytes, which exceeds most reported H2O2 fuel cells. The results demonstrate that alkaline anolyte benefits the cell performance more significantly than acidic catholyte does. The reaction mechanism at each electrode was further studied to provide insights for future development of H2O2 fuel cells: the reduction at the cathode follows the Fenton reaction; as for the oxidation at the anode, it was first revealed that H2O2 oxidation was facilitated by free radicals generated from H2O2 in alkaline media. Besides, the radicals also help to maintain a large voltage difference between the electrodes. Furthermore, this fuel cell shows great durability and can be instantly re-activated upon refueling. This gel-aided dual-electrolyte fuel cell design can pave a way for practical applications of direct H2O2 fuel cells.

Abstract:In an in-depth investigation of membraneless hydrogen peroxide-based fuel cells (H2O2 FCs), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a carbon-neutral compound, is demonstrated to undergo electrochemical decomposition to produce H2O, O2, and electrical energy. The unique redox properties of H2O2 position it as a viable candidate for sustainable energy applications. The proposed membraneless design addresses the limitations of conventional fuel cells, including fabrication complexities and design challenges. A novel three-dimensional electrode, synthesized via electroplating techniques, is introduced. Constructed from Au-electroplated carbon fiber cloth combined with Nifoam, this electrode showcases enhanced electrochemical reaction kinetics, leading to an increased power density for H2O2 FCs. The performance of fuel cells is intricately linked to the pH levels of the electrolyte solution. Beyond FC applications, such electrodes hold potential in portable energy systems and as high surface area catalysts. This study emphasizes the significance of electrode engineering in optimizing the potential of H2O2 as an environmentally friendly energy source.
Elementary Study of a Direct Borohydride/h2o2 Fuel Cell

Abstract:A direct borodydride/H2O2 fuel cell with Pt/C and Nafion membrane was fabricated successfully. Performances with various temperatures, concentrations and fluxes of borohydride/H2O2 were investigated by measuring their polarization curves. The maximum power density of 130 mW/cm2 was obtained at 60 ℃, and the cell voltage discharging at 0.1 A/cm2 was over 0.7 V at 40 ℃, which was obviously better than that of direct methanol fuel cell under the same condition. The effect of membrane thickness on the cell performance was also studied. The open circuit voltage (OCV) of Nafion117 was 180 mV, higher than that of Nafion112. However, the cell with Nafion 112 showed better performance in high current region. It indicates that the performance of direct borohydride/H2O2 fuel cell was influenced by both the reactant crossover and membrane conductivity. Furthermore, the cell voltage kept quite stable during 1.5 hours constant current discharging. The morphology of MEA cross-section results implie that the catalyst layer and Nafion membrane are still bonded together strongly after the experiment.
A flexible on-fiber H2O2 microfluidic fuel cell with high power density

Abstract:To promote the simplification and integration of membraneless microfluidic fuel cell (MMFC) system and combine with flexible portable devices, a flexible on-fiber MMFC exploiting H2O2 as sole reactant is presented, eliminating the separation requirement of fuel and oxidant. Nickel (Ni) nano-particles and Prussian blue with multiwalled carbon nanotube (PB-MWCNT) are coated on hydrophilic braided carbon fibers (BCFs) to serve as the anode and cathode, respectively. The three-dimensional (3D) flow-through anode and cathode with a wealth of exposed electroactive sites improve reactant mass transfer. The anode and cathode are respectively wound on both sides of the middle cotton thread-based flow channel for separation. Under the combination of capillary force and gravity, reactants flow continuously through the fiber-based microchannels without external pumps. Importantly, the H2O2 MMFC achieves the highest maximum power density (MPD) of 14.41 mW cm−2 so far in one-chamber or single-stream H2O2 fuel cells. Besides, no serious deterioration in the power-generation performance is observed in complex practical operating conditions including bending with various angles, repeated folding and dropping. Three presented flexible MMFCs are connected to power a handheld calculator, indicating the tremendous potential of developing micro power supplies based on abundant flexible materials as well as green and sustainable energy.

Abstract:A novel proof-of-concept direct liquid fuel cell (DLFC) feeding on hydrazine borane (N2H4BH3, HB) is developed. The anode catalyst is the non-noble carbon supported polypyrrole cobalt hydroxide (C-PPY-Co(OH)2), catalyzed by which the electron transfer number of the HB electro-oxidation reaction is 7.63 e-. The energy density of HB is 9947 Wh kg-1, exceeding traditional liquid fuel for DLFCs. The open circuit voltage of the fuel cell is 1.201 V, higher than that of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) and direct hydrazine fuel cells (DHFCs). The fuel cell obtains a peak power density of 60 mW cm-2, and the crossover current density of fuel is significantly lower than that of existing DLFCs. The electro-oxidation kinetics of HB on the Ni foam electrode is faster than carbon paper. And the mass transport resistance of Ni foam electrode is 54 s cm-1, much lower than that of carbon paper (231 s cm-1).

Hypophosphites As Eco-Compatible Fuels for Membrane-Free Direct Liquid Fuel Cells

Abstract:Crossover of liquid fuel remains a severe problem for conventional direct liquid fuel cells even when polymer electrolyte membranes are applied. Herein, we report for the first time a membrane-free direct liquid fuel cell powered by alkaline hypophosphite solution. The proof-of-concept fuel cell yields a peak power density of 32 mW cm-2 under air flow at room temperature. The removal of the polymer electrolyte membrane is attributed to the high reactivity and selectivity of Pd and α-MnO2 towards the hypophosphite oxidation on the anode and oxygen reduction on the cathode, respectively. The discharge products are analyzed by 31 P NMR spectroscopy and the faradaic efficiencies have been calculated after discharging at 10 mA cm-2 for 20 hours. The non-toxicity of hypophosphite and membrane-free fuel cell structure provide huge potential for future applications.

Abstract:The wet powder spraying (WPS) technique was used for the deposition of dense and thin (Y2O3)0.08(ZrO2)0.92 (YSZ-8) films on an anode substrate being used for fuel cell applications. Both agglomeration of the powder and the presence of organics in the substrate have a significant effect on the quality and densification of the thin electrolyte layer. High-energy ball milling effectively broke up the agglomerates and enhanced the packing density of the green layer. Pre-calcination of the substrate at ∼1000°C enhanced the match of sintering shrinkage between the electrolyte layer and the substrate and improved the quality of the YSZ-8 thin film significantly. Crack-free dual-layer assembly with a highly densified YSZ-8 film as thin as 10μm was successfully fabricated by optimizing the fabrication parameters. The cells with a La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 cathode showed a high open circuit voltage of 1.071V and a peak power density of 894mWcm−2 at 850°C operated with hydrogen fuel.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells have been regarded as the most promising candidate for fuel cell vehicles and tools. Their broader adaption, however, has been impeded by cost and lifetime. By integrating a thin layer of tungsten oxide within the anode, which serves as a rapid-response hydrogen reservoir, oxygen scavenger, sensor for power demand, and regulator for hydrogen-disassociation reaction, we herein report proton exchange membrane fuel cells with significantly enhanced power performance for transient operation and low humidified conditions, as well as improved durability against adverse operating conditions. Meanwhile, the enhanced power performance minimizes the use of auxiliary energy-storage systems and reduces costs. Scale fabrication of such devices can be readily achieved based on the current fabrication techniques with negligible extra expense. This work provides proton exchange membrane fuel cells with enhanced power performance, improved durability, prolonged lifetime, and reduced cost for automotive and other applications.

Abstract:<p>In this work, a paper-based hydrogen fuel cell is developed without the need for hydrogen storage. Instead, an embedded aluminum foil inside the paper is utilized for in-situ hydrogen generation. The electrodes and current collectors are also deposited on the paper, leading to a lightweight, compact and flexible hydrogen fuel cell with an OCV reaching 0.93 V and a peak power density of 4 mW cm<sup>−2</sup>. Benefited from the impeded hydroxyl ion diffusion, the hydrogen generation rate is well controlled, leading to a high faradaic efficiency of 72%. In addition, the cell can be operated under different bending angles with negligible power loss. Furthermore, it can be conveniently stacked in the same piece of paper for higher voltage and power outputs. Such a novel fuel cell design is especially suitable for powering various flexible devices with small rated power.</p>
