Abstract:We demonstrate a Yb:fiber ring laser incorporating a piece of solid-core photonic bandgap fiber for intra-cavity group delay dispersion compensation. The output pulse was as short as 29 fs after a prism pair compression with a spectral bandwidth of 41 nm. The output power was 150 mW at a repetition rate of 130 MHz.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system using a vector-dispersion compressor, which consists of a transmission grating pair and multipass cell based Gires-Tournois interferometer mirrors. The mirror is designed with nearly zero group-delay dispersion and large negative third-order dispersion. As a result, the third-order dispersion of the compressor can be adjusted independently to compensate the nonlinear phase shift of amplified pulses to reduce the pulse pedestal. With this scheme, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8MW peak power. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate 503MHz fundamental high repetition rate operation in a ring cavity passively mode-locked Yb:fiber laser incorporating a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing collimator and a piece of all-solid photonic bandgap fiber. The Yb doped fiber was directly fabricated as one fiber pigtail into the functional collimator, greatly shortening the cavity length and facilitating the splicing operation. A 5cm long photonic bandgap fiber with abnormal dispersion at the lasing wavelength (centered at 1030nm) decreases the net dispersion for shorter output pulses. The spectral bandwidth of the pulse was 34nm. The direct output pulse was measured to be 156fs and the dechirped pulse was about 76fs. With this innovative Yb:fiber pigtailed WDM collimator, the ring cavity laser has the potential to work at a repetition rate up to GHz.

Abstract:We present a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser with near-zero net cavity dispersion using the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. The compact all-fiber laser is constructed by utilizing an optical integrated component. Through optimizing the cavity dispersion and nonlinearity, high-peak-power near-transform-limited pulses with a spectral width beyond the gain bandwidth limitation can be directly obtained from the laser. Resultant output pulses have a pulse duration of 62 fs, a 3-dB spectral width of 66.3 nm, and a maximum peak power of 7.9 kW. Numerical simulations reproduce the generation of sub-100-fs pulses in the laser. The pulse-shaping mechanism can be attributed to simultaneous dispersion and nonlinearity management in the cavity, which is distinct from that in the stretched-pulse lasers.

Abstract:Mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers around 1 μm are attractive for high power applications and low noise pulse train generation. Mode-locked fiber lasers working in soliton and stretched-pulse regime outperform others in terms of the laser noise characteristics, mechanical stability and easy maintenance. However, conventional optical fibers always show a normal group velocity dispersion around 1 μm, leading to the inconvenience for necessary dispersion management. Here we show that optical microfibers having a large anomalous dispersion around 1 μm can be integrated into mode-locked Yb-doped fiber lasers with ultralow insertion loss down to −0.06 dB, enabling convenient dispersion management of the laser cavity. Besides, optical microfibers could also be adopted to spectrally broaden and to dechirp the ultrashort pulses outside the laser cavity, giving rise to a pulse duration of about 110 fs. We believe that this demonstration may facilitate all-fiber format high-performance ultrashort pulse generation at 1 μm and may find applications in precision measurements, large-scale facility synchronization and evanescent-field-based optical sensing.

Abstract:Simulation and experimental results for high repetition rate all-normal dispersion Yb:fiber ring lasers are demonstrated for the cavity dispersion from 0.01 to 0.025 ps 2 .The simulation shows that the pulse spectrum has the potential to reach>30 nm for the dispersion of 0.014 ps 2 under practical pump power. This potential is proved by the experiment.Maximum spectral width of 30 nm is achieved at the repetition rate of 285 MHz under the 850-mW pump power.Average output power is 550 mW and dechirped pulse is 78 fs.

Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:We report the direct generation of 75-femosecond pulses from a stretched-pulse fiber ring laser using the nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locking mechanism. As the gain media in the laser, the high-doped erbium-doped fiber working at positive dispersion was used to compensate the negative dispersion of standard single mode fiber. Under a 125 mW pump power, the average output power was higher than 15 mW, with a 25.9 MHz repetition rate and 53 nm spectrum width. Meanwhile, the pulse energy was greatly improved, which could reach 0.6 nJ. The laser easily achieved mode-locking and ran stably at room temperature. All-fiber construction makes it compactable and portable.

Abstract:This letter demonstrates an experimental realization of effective dispersion and nonlinearity optimization in an Er-doped fiber laser at a high repetition rate of larger than 200 MHz. The maximum power of the direct output pulse at an available pump power of 700 mW is 84.8 mW with a pulse duration of 56.5 fs, which exhibits a high transfer efficiency of 12.1%, single-pulse energy of 0.42 nJ, and pulse peak power of 7 kW. Evolution of the spectral characteristics of the direct output pulse is further studied by adjusting the waveplates and tuning the pump power. 44.6-fs ultrafast pulses with a flat full spectral width at half maximum of 148 nm are directly generated.

Abstract:We report on a long-term stable 50 fs pulse generation directly from a nonlinear amplified loop mirror based fiber oscillator. The laser cavity with all-polarization-maintaining fiber components can generate pulses with 0.16 nJ pulse energy and 50 fs pulse width under 85 MHz repetition rate. The 0-45 degrees C high-low temperature test, together with the 15 h output power test, shows the excellent stability of the few-cycle pulsed laser.

Abstract:A compact Er:fiber ring laser operated at a fundamental repetition rate of 325 MHz is reported. Two gain fibers with opposite dispersion are employed to shorten the fiber laser cavity for high repetition rate and soliton-like pulse generation without losing gain and compactness. The spectral bandwidth of the output pulse is 24 nm and the direct pulse duration is 123 fs without extra-cavity compression, which are values near the transform-limited range.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported an Yb-doped, femtosecond, chirped pulse amplification laser based on strictly all-fiber structure. It operated at a low repetition rate of 1 kHz and adopted the synchronously pumping technology to suppress ASE and heat accumulation. A chirped fiber Bragg grating providing adjustable dispersion is used as the pulse stretcher. High order dispersion induced by fiber, grating pair in the system was compensated accurately. Laser pulse with duration of 180 fs and energy of 112 μJ has been obtained. In addition, it has a high long-term stability of energy and a good beam quality, corresponding to energy fluctuation of 0.62% in an hour and M2 factor of 1.15, respectively.
