Abstract:Now 1000-kV ac ultra-high voltage transmission line has been put into operation in China, the transmission tower reaches about 70 m to 90 m high, and 30 m to 60 m wide. So, the 1000-kV transmission line has a wide lightning induced area. On the other hand, the operation voltage is very high, all these increase the probability of lightning striking UHV transmission lines. Due to insulation level of the 1000-kV transmission line is very high, so the threaten of direct lightning stroke is very small, but the high towers increase the shielding failure probability. In this paper, we proposed a numerical model to analyze the shielding failure characteristics of 1000- kV ac transmission line with the lightning leader propagation process considered, the electrical field of the system including lightning leader, transmission line and ground is solved. According to analysis results, we found if the span between two overhead ground wires of transmission line is too wide, a new phenomenon of middle-phase shielding failure takes place, the downward lightning leader of current magnitude higher than 100 kA would strike the middle phase conductor bypassing the ground wires. The middle-phase shielding failure is caused by the very high operation voltage of 1000-kV ultra-high voltage transmission line and wide designed span between two ground wires. The mechanism to generate this phenomenon is different from that of small lightning current, and the EGM can not properly explain this phenomenon. For the cat-head tower, the high shielding failure probability is caused by the middle-phase shielding failure, but for the cup tower, the shielding failure mainly takes place on the side phases. At last, the related measures to improve the lightning performances of 1000-kV ultra-high voltage transmission line are discussed. Three ground wires had been applied in the 2 km section of 1000-kV Jindongnan-Nayang transmission-line near the 1000-kV substation.
