Abstract:By taking advantage of the hydrophobicity of dry polystyrene colloidal crystal (opal) films and the large surface tension of water, a convectively self-assembled polystyrene opal film on a hydrophilic glass substrate can be peeled off from the substrate and floated on the water surface. A layer transfer technique was developed to sequentially stack floating opal films of different sphere sizes, resulting in opaline hetero photonic crystals. The feasibility of this technique to planar defect engineering in a self-assembled colloidal photonic crystal was also demonstrated. Both structural observation and optical characterization confirmed the crystalline integrity of the resultant opaline heterostructures.

Abstract:Highly dense two-dimensional periodic arrays of nano-scaled silicon pillars present the capacity for acting as photonic crystals which can mould, manipulate and guide light. We demonstrate finite element modelling of silicon pillars based photonic crystals and their effective use in applications like waveguides, multiplexers and switches. The optical wave propagation through these structures was thoroughly simulated and analysed, confirming their high efficiency.Later the fabrication of highly periodic two-dimensional arrays of silicon pillars through the process of etching is also explained. High quality of fabricated silicon pillars is displayed in various scanning electron microscope images. The arrays with pillar radius of 50 nm and lattice constant of 400 nm were successfully utilised as optical waveguides with sharp turns. The experimental results are presented showing a good match with the simulation band gap results. Finally we also present the concept of utilising liquid crystals as an anisotropic medium around the silicon nano-pillars to establish tuneable photonic crystals waveguides. The cell geometry for such a hybrid device is suggested in which by application of voltage the dielectric constant of liquid crystals can be controlled and essentially the waveguides can be tuned.

Moreover, the silicon nanopillars sputtered with noble metals can also display artificial optical properties and act as metamaterials due to the mutual plasmonic coupling effects. We report the theoretical results for the silicon nanopillars based metamaterial high-pass filter.

Abstract:High-aspect-ratio square optical fiber arrays enable massive applications from nanoscale to mesoscale, while fabrication is becoming a challenge. Here, a simple and inexpensive method is proposed based on capillary-induced self-assembly and tailored external constraints. The steady-state solution of the liquid morphology equation indicates that the interaction between optical fibers and liquid drives the array into shapes with lower free energy. Therefore, a well-designed external constraint, which affects the balance between capillarity and elastic restoration, can regulate the final arrangement of the optical fibers. Based on the dynamic analyses of the droplet-to-column transitions, liquid flow along optical fibers, and approach of optical fiber driven by liquid bridge and viscous damping, the factors influencing the capillary-induced self-assembly process are investigated, and the fabrication conditions are thus optimized. Experimental results verified the proposed method. The fabricated vector tactile sensing probe achieves a square array with aspect ratios of similar to 135. Its displacement resolutions in three dimensions are proven better than 60 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrate that thousands of periodic nano-craters are fabricated on a subwavelength-diameter tapered optical fiber, an optical nanofiber, by irradiating with just a single femtosecond laser pulse. A key aspect of the fabrication is that the nanofiber itself acts as a cylindrical lens and focuses the femtosecond laser beam on its shadow surface. We also demonstrate that the periodic nano-crater array on the nanofiber shows polarization dependent fiber Bragg grating (FBG) characteristics. Such FBG structures on the nanofiber may act as a 1-D photonic crystal due to the strong transverse and longitudinal confinement of the field.

Abstract:Polyelectrolyte multilayer thin films were coated onto flat glass substrates and optic fibers by using the ionic self-assembly technology. The deposition of the multilayers was monitored by using UV-vis spectroscopy, and the assembled thin films were characterized by small-angle X-ray reflectivity. Optic fiber polymer Fabry-Perot cavities were created by assembling polyelectrolytes onto the end faces of glass fibers, and the Fabry-Perot interference phenomena has been observed. It can be expected that novel fiber optical devices, such as Fabry-Perot filters, reflectors and Fabry-Perot cavity-based fiber optic sensors, can be developed via this approach.
Fabrication and Characterization of Colloidal Photonic Crystals Self-assembled by Monodispersed Silica Nanospheres

Abstract:The monodisperse silica spheres with diameters of 200-350 nm were synthesized by hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate based on the Stober process, and silica colloidal crystals was fabricated with a vertical deposition self-assembly method. Scanning electron microscopy and optical transmission spectra were applied to characterize the structures and properties of the deposited films. Experimental results show that the silica spheres form a face-centered cubic structure and the film thickness can be manipulated by controlling the particle concentration. The distinct peaks of transmission spectra for colloidal layers depend on the size of the silica spheres, which are consistent with theoretical calculation according to Bragg’s law. The depth of the optical stop band can be tuned by varying the volume fraction of SiO2 particles in the colloidal suspension.

Abstract:Polystyrene microspheres with monodisperse particles are self-assembled on silk fabric with gravitational sedimentation method,thus photonic crystal structure is obtained.FESEM analysis is used to characterize the feature of photonic crystal structure on the surface of silk fabric after self-assembly and the interface state of matching of fabric and photonic crystal.Then,the assembly process of nanoparticle on silk fabric is inferred.The result shows that photonic crystal obtained by self-assembly of nanoparticle on silk fabric has three-dimensional surface and centered cubic structure.Self-assembly process first occurs in the gap between fibers,then on the fiber surface.Finally,a long-range and orderly photonic crystal structure forms.Smooth fiber/fabric surface is conducive to self-assembly of nanoparticle and establishment of photonic crystal structure.

Abstract:The process of self-assembly is guided by the minimization of free energy, which limits the symmetries available for assembly and ultimately the usefulness of devices fabricated in this fashion. Here, we demonstrate experimentally for the first time a technique which we term light-assisted, templated self assembly. By exciting a guided-resonance mode of a photonic-crystal slab, an optical potential landscape is created above the slab which results in stably trapped, periodic patterns of particles at the potential minima. The underlying symmetry of particle clusters matches that of the photonic-crystal lattice, thus enabling square, rectangular or other symmetries not usually available for assembly due to energy concerns. We anticipate that this technique could be used to tailor the optical characteristics of nanofabricated devices, and the optical trapping techniques demonstrated herein may enable a variety of complex nanomanipulation tools and lab-on-a-chip devices.

Sol-gel co-assembly of hollow cylindrical inverse opals and inverse opal columns

Abstract:A facile approach of fabricating hollow cylindrical inverse opals and inverse opal columns by sol-gel co-assembly method was proposed. Polystyrene (PS) colloidal suspension added with hydrolyzed silicate precursor solution was used to self-assemble composite colloidal crystals which consist of PS colloidal crystal template and infiltrated silica gel in the interstitial of microspheres. Continuous hollow cylindrical composite colloidal crystal films have been produced on capillaries' outside and internal surface. Composite colloidal crystal columns which filling up the interior of a capillary were fabricated by pressure assisted sol-gel co-assembly method. Hollow cylindrical inverse opals and inverse opal columns were obtained after removing PS colloidal crystal from the composite colloidal crystal. Optical properties of the silica hollow cylindrical inverse opals were characterized by transmission spectrum and a stop band was observed. Structure and optical properties of the inverse opal columns were investigated.

Abstract:Evaporation-induced self-assembly of colloidal particles is one of the most versatile fabrication routes to obtain large-area colloidal crystals; however, the formation of uncontrolled "drying cracks" due to gradual solvent evaporation represents a significant challenge of this process. While several methods are reported to minimize crack formation during evaporation-induced colloidal assembly, here an approach is reported to take advantage of the crack formation as a patterning tool to fabricate microscopic photonic structures with controlled sizes and geometries. This is achieved through a mechanistic understanding of the fracture behavior of three different types of opal structures, namely, direct opals (colloidal crystals with no matrix material), compound opals (colloidal crystals with matrix material), and inverse opals (matrix material templated by a sacrificial colloidal crystal). This work explains why, while direct and inverse opals tend to fracture along the expected {111} planes, the compound opals exhibit a different cracking behavior along the nonclose-packed {110} planes, which is facilitated by the formation of cleavage-like fracture surfaces. The discovered principles are utilized to fabricate photonic microbricks by programming the crack initiation at specific locations and by guiding propagation along predefined orientations during the self-assembly process, resulting in photonic microbricks with controlled sizes and geometries.

Abstract:Integrating nanostructures onto optical fibers presents a promising strategy for developing new-fashioned devices and extending the scope of nanodevices' applications. Here we report the first fabrication of a composite silicon nanostructure on an optical fiber. Through direct chemical etching using an H2O2/HF solution, multicrystal silicon films with columnar microstructures are etched into a vertically aligned, inverted-cone-like nanorod array embedded in a nanocone array. A faster dissolution rate of the silicon at the void-rich boundary regions between the columns is found to be responsible for the separation of the columns, and thus the formation of the nanostructure array. The morphology of the nanorods primarily depends on the microstructure of the columns in the film. Through controlling the microstructure of the as-grown film and the etching parameters, the structural control of the nanostructure is promising. This fabrication method can be extended to a larger length scale, and it even allows roll-to-roll processing.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals, capable of transforming crystal structures and changing intrinsic structural colors in response to external electrical energies, can serve as optically active components for promising technological applications. Unfortunately, the deformation of inverse opal photonic crystals generally weakens the structural stability and leads to poor color tuning repeatability, while most color-tunable colloidal photonic crystals suffer from low color saturation as a result of small refractive index difference between the colloids and matrices. Inspired by cephalopod skins, nanometer-sized hollow silica sphere/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–polystyrene sulfonate photonic crystals are self-assembled using a scalable coating technique. The as-engineered photonic crystals exhibit a conspicuous structural color that is tunable on demand by applying varied voltages. Importantly, their appearance and expanded crystalline lattice can be maintained without any electric field under ambient conditions and simultaneously recovered by applying an oxidation potential. The reversibility and the dependence of hollow sphere size and thickness on electrochromic behaviors are also investigated in this study.

Abstract:Integration of complex photonic structures onto optical fiber facets enables powerful platforms with unprecedented optical functionalities. Conventional nanofabrication technologies, however, do not permit viable integration of complex photonic devices onto optical fibers owing to their low throughput and high cost. In this paper we report the fabrication of a three dimensional structure achieved by direct Nanoimprint Lithography on the facet of an optical fiber. Nanoimprint processes and tools were specifically developed to enable a high lithographic accuracy and coaxial alignment of the optical device with respect to the fiber core. To demonstrate the capability of this new approach, a 3D beam splitter has been designed, imprinted and optically characterized. Scanning electron microscopy and optical measurements confirmed the excellent lithographic capabilities of the proposed approach as well as the desired optical performance of the imprinted structure. The inexpensive solution presented here should enable advancements in areas such as integrated optics and sensing, achieving enhanced portability and versatility of fiber optic components.

Abstract:We report laser micro-fabrication of photonic crystal structures in silica glass and photopolymerizing resins, and present a detailed analysis of their structural and optical properties. Photonic crystals with 2D triangular lattice and 3D diamond lattice in glass are found to exhibit moderately pronounced photonic pseudogaps. Formation of planar microcavity is demonstrated in log-pile 3D photonic crystal, laser micro-fabricated in resin.

Abstract:Based on a silica sol-gel technique, highly-structurally ordered silica photonic structures were fabricated by UV lithography and hot manual nanoimprint efforts, which makes large-scale fabrication of silica photonic crystals easy and results in low-cost. These photonic structures show perfect periodicity, smooth and flat surfaces and consistent aspect ratios, which are checked by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, glass substrates with imprinted photonic nanostructures show good diffraction performance in both transmission and reflection mode. Furthermore, the reflection efficiency can be enhanced by 5 nm Au nanoparticle coating, which does not affect the original imprint structure. Also the refractive index and dielectric constant of the imprinted silica is close to that of the dielectric layer in nanodevices. In addition, the polarization characteristics of the reflected light can be modulated by stripe nanostructures through changing the incident light angle. The experimental findings match with theoretical results, making silica photonic nanostructures functional integration layers in many optical or optoelectronic devices, such as LED and microlasers to enhance the optical performance and modulate polarization properties in an economical and large-scale way.

Abstract:A concise overview is provided about highly efficient co‐assembly strategies utilizing block copolymers and colloidal nanoparticles for the creation of photonic crystal materials with precisely tailored optical functional nanostructures and tunable colors across the entire visible spectrum. The prospects and challenges are also outlined for exploring the advanced and rich design of co‐assembly‐based photonic functional materials. Photonic materials have drawn considerable attention for a great deal of promising applications with versatile optical characteristics and functionalities. This review provides a concise overview of co‐assembly strategies for the creation of photonic crystals, offering precise control over structural colors throughout the entire visible spectrum by manipulating the interaction of light with complex micro‐nano structures. Specifically, the utilization of block copolymers (BCPs) and colloidal nanoparticles as wavelength‐scale building blocks facilitates the modulation of defined nanostructures with functionality and tailorability for diverse coloration effects. Additionally, by facilely adjusting the relative ratios, a flexible balance can be struck between photonic crystals and photonic glasses for dynamic control of arrangements. Finally, this review concludes by discussing the future outlook and challenges in advancing co‐assembly‐based photonic functional materials.
