Abstract:MgO was directly dispersed onto zeolite NaY by microwave irradiation to form strong basic sites with high water-stability. Such high water-stability of MgO modified zeolite resulted from the especially low solubility of MgO in water, which could be useful for expanding the application of solid strong bases in those catalytic processes involving water in the reactants or products. In the isomerization of cis-2-butene at 273 K, MgO/NaY exhibited a considerable activity that increased as the loading amount was raised. The activity of MgO/NaY was higher than that of KNO3/KL and KF/AIPO4-5, and was in proportional to the total basicity formed on MgO/NaY sample instead of the soluble basicity. Dispersion of MgO on zeolite NaY created catalytic activity for the dehydrogenation of isopropanol, but it suppressed the dehydration reaction owing to the cover and/or neutralization of acid sites. Moreover, if the yield of acetone, formed in the dehydrogenation, was given in the units of mmol per gram MgO per hour, the values of MgO/NaY and MgO/KL sample were obviously higher than that of MgO itself. This enhance in catalytic activity should be attributed to the high dispersion of MgO on zeolite expanding the surface area of MgO. MgO/NaY showed activity similar to MgO in aldolisation of acetone at 333 K, but the selectivity for diacetone alcohol on MgO/NaY was higher than that on MgO. As a comparison, MgO loaded on alumina or silica exhibited a lower activity than MgO. Based on these facts it was clear that dispersion of MgO on zeolite by microwave irradiation could be a novel way to prepare strong basic shape-selective catalysts.

Abstract:Dispersion and decomposition of KNO3 on KL zeolite can create strong basic sites upon calcination at 600 °C, and their basic strength can reach H− = 27.0 which is the characteristic of a solid superbase. The resulting catalyst showed a high catalytic activity for the isomerization of cis-but-2-ene at 0 °C.

Abstract:Mg2+-derived mesoporous ultra-high silica twelve-membered-ring zeolites with multiple topologies (MOR, BEA and MTW) were straightforwardly synthesized by a one-pot route, where the crucial step was the co-hydrolysis/condensation of silica source and magnesium salt under moderate acidic conditions. SiO2/Al2O3 ratios can be adjusted from similar to 30 to as high as 410, thus generating superior basicity that was further improved by the incorporation of Mg species. A mesoporous structure was self-formed without the assistance of any template or special strategy. Catalysis tests showed high activity of these zeolites in a typical base reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, even for the bulky substrates due to the enhanced mass transfer arising from the mesopores. This methodology provides a promising approach towards target synthesis of valuable Mg2+-derived mesoporous ultra-high silica zeolites with tunable acid/base properties, which can even act as an efficient mesoporous zeolitic solid base.

Abstract:Loading of KF on zeolite NaY leads to a similar basicity to that of KOH/NaY, but no strongly basic sites formed on the composite due to the negative effect of SiO4 tetrahedra in NaY which form species with low base strength. Using ALPO(4)-5 or NaY coated with Al2O3 to support KF could avoid the effect of SiO4 tetrahedra and increased the base strength of the sample. KNO3 loaded on NaY created basic sites after decomposition at 673 K with a redox method, and KNO3/KL was found to have superbasicity. For preparation of strongly basic zeolites, microwave irradiation was employed to disperse MgO on zeolites, and the resulting materials showed high activities in the decomposition of isopropanol or the isomerization of cis-but-2-ene at 273 K. Abstract:Mesostructured zeolitic materials (MZMs) with relatively high acidity in comparison with the mesoporous siliceous MCM-41 were prepared via an efficient, mild, and simple post-synthetic treatment of Y zeolite facilitated by microwave irradiation, i.e., microwave-assisted chelation (MWAC). The disordered mesoporous aluminosilicates materials (DMASs) of MZM were created from Y zeolite in the absence of using mesoscale templates. The prepared DMASs showed the good mesoporous features with the mesopore area and volume of ~260 m2 g-1 and ~0.37 cm3 g-1, respectively, and with the mesopore sizes distributed in a range of 2-10 nm. MZMs possess a total acidity of about 0.6 mmol g-1 and exhibited comparatively superior catalytic activity to the parent Y zeolite and MCM-41 in the vapor phase catalytic dealkylation of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (TiPBz) and liquid phase catalytic aldol condensation of benzaldehyde with 1-heptanal. Although the yield loss was inevitable for preparing MZMs using the MWAC method, the preliminary economic analysis of the preparation cost of MZMs showed the promise. Additionally, a comprehensive comparison of the state-of-the-art mesoporous materials concerning their sustainable aspects was made, showing that MZMs are promising mesoporous materials for further development and functionalization for catalysis.

Abstract:A new strategy was utilized to prepare strongly basic zeolite through precoating MgO on the zeolite NaY prior to KNO3 modification. By controlling the loading amount of the precursor magnesium acetate, MgO could be well dispersed on NaY as long as its content did not exceed 12wt%. The precoated MgO layer played a significant role in enhancing the basicity of zeolite by adjusting the host–guest interaction to promote the decomposition of KNO3 on NaY, and at the same time this MgO layer prevented the zeolite framework from corroding by the resulting strongly basic potassium species. As a result, a strong basicity was successfully generated on NaY, and the resulting basic zeolites containing potassium species exhibited good catalytic performance on the vapor phase methylation of cyclopentadiene (CPD) with methanol. The conversion of CPD was 30.1% and 3.5% over parent NaY and Mg12Y, respectively, accompanied with the methylcyclopentadienes (MCPD) selectivity of 8.3% and 46.1% at the reaction temperature of 500°C and time of 1h. However, 38.1% of CPD could be converted over K10Mg12Y under the same reaction conditions, and the selectivity of MCPD achieved to 76.7%.

Abstract:Zeolites are an emerging class of crystalline, nanoporous, inorganic material with regular micropores and highly tunable functionalities. Zeolites have been proposed as ideal materials for applications in catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicine due to their notable intrinsic features such as accessible void space, large surface area, and strong acidity. Microwave radiation is a robust technology that can quickly and efficiently prepare uniform and controllable zeolites that enable remarkable functions. We first review the current research progress in, and the fabrication of, zeolites using microwave technologies, and the related application. After a brief introduction to microwave theory and modification of zeolites, the discussion focuses on the five main microwave technologies for the synthesis of zeolites, that include microwave irradiation, microwave assisted hydrothermal synthesis, microwave assisted aging synthesis, microwave assisted ionothermal synthesis, and other microwave related methods. Some critical applications such as catalysis (NOx reduction, CO2 reduction, and Fenton), gas sensing and CO2 capture, and biomedicine are selected and discussed in detail. Finally, a summary and perspectives on research that may lead to the future development of this blossoming field.

Abstract:CaO could be dispersed on the NaY zeolite to form strong basic sites on the host under the microwave irradiation. After activation at 873 K, some CaO/NaY composites were found to exhibit an extraordinaryly high base strength of H- = 27.0, therefore they were expected to be novel superbasic catalytic materials. Owing to the especially low solubility of CaO in water, these CaO/NaY samples had a relatively high water-stability, which would be beneficial for application of solid base catalysts in those catalytic processes involving water in the reactants or products. Unlike K2CO3/NaY, which exhibited a low water yield in the decomposition of 2-propanol, the CaO/NaY samples possessed higher activity for both dehydration and dehydrogenation of isopropanol, implying the existence of both acid and base sites on the samples, which might be useful for the reactions that need co-operation of acid and base active centers.

Abstract:Continuous b-oriented MFI zeolite films were synthesized on stainless steel substrates by a two-stage microwave heating.The comparisons of microwave heating and convectional heating,one-stage microwave heating and two-stage microwave heating were carried out.The influence of the molar composition of synthesis solution on the synthesis of the zeolite film with two-stage microwave heating was also investigated.Compared with convectional heating,the crystal growth rate was accelerated greatly by microwave heating.The microwave-assisted aging at relative low temperature could accelerate the nucleation.Large crystals of zeolite could be obtained by prolonging the crystallization duration,and the nuclei concentration increased with the decrease of water content,both of which improved the continuity of the synthesized continuous b-oriented MFI zeolite film.

Abstract:A facile and fast microwave-assisted approach without any other pre/post-treatment has been proposed to hydrothermally synthesize six kinds of MFI-type heteroatom (Mn, Ga, Ti, Sn, Cr, Zr) zeolites. By comparing with oven heating mode, it is found that microwave field displays a positive effect on the introduction of partial heteroatoms in the zeolite framework. Moreover, differing from the conventional heating, microwave irradiation displays different influences on the different heteroatom zeolites because different heteroatoms cause different polarities and wave-absorption abilities of M-O bonds under microwave irradiation. Furthermore, this positive effect of microwave is embodied not only on heteroatom zeolite synthesis and heteroatom state in zeolite framework but also the resultant catalytic performance. This finding provides an easy route for the synthesis of novel heteroatom zeolite being difficult to prepare by conventional mode, along with a new direction for the exploration of microwave effect.

Abstract:Mullite is becoming increasingly important for use in refractory lining, structural ceramic and catalyst products. The kaolinite-mullite process is a simple method to prepare mullite. Under conventional heating kaolinite has to be heated at 1400 degrees C for 1 h to form well-ordered orthorhombic mullite (3Al(2)O(3)center dot 2SiO(2)) that is accompanied by the formation of cristobalite. However, under microwave heating at 900 degrees C for 5 min and 1200 degrees C for 1 min, respectively, kaolinite transformed to well-ordered orthorhombic mullite without the formation of cristobalite. The ultra-fast heating rate of microwaves, due to selective heating, accelerated the nucleation and growth of mullite grains and changed the mullitization route of kaolinite. Before mullitization, the capacity for microwave absorption of decomposed kaolinite is dependent on the amount of structural OH up to a temperature of 522 degrees C and is then dependent on the amount of metakaolinite, gamma alumina and amorphous silica that are present in the sample. The dielectric loss of pseudo-tetragonal mullite has the highest value of the dielectric losses for all of the phases that result from the kaolinite-mullite process.
Attempts on preparing mesoporous basic material MgO/SBA-15

Abstract:Novel porous materials with mesoporous structure and strong basicity were successfully prepared by dispersing MgO on SBA-15 in three different methods, including impregnation, microwave irradiation and their combination, through magnesium acetate path. The efficiency of microwave irradiation was proven to be very high, but it fails to directly disperse magnesia itself oil SBA-15, and the lack of ions in surface of carrier was excluded to account for this failure. Aluminiferous SBA-15 had been synthesized and employed as the carrier to support MgO, possessing a higher stability in impregnation to resist the corrosion of magnesium acetate solution and being beneficial for generating more basic sites. Finally the possibility of in situ modifying SBA-15 in its synthesis process was discussed.

Abstract:A new solid base, mesoporous K2O-MgO/ZrO2-La2O3, was prepared by hydrothermal and immersion process using a cationic surfactant C16H33(CH3)3NBr (CTAB) as template．The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman spectroscope and CO2 temperature programmed desorption(CO2-TPD). XRD and Raman spectra indicated that the catalyst calcined at 600°C and 700 °C remained surface and bulk tetragonal phase and good mesoporous characteristics when the content of K2O is less than 0.5. While the monoclinic phase is appeared on catalyst surface when the content of K2O is more than 0.5 calcined at 700 °C. CO2-TPD proves that there are two adsorption states at high temperature corresponding to super alkaline sites of K2O and undecomposed KNO3. The catalyst with 0.4 mol ratio of K2O to ZrO2 calcined at 700 °C showed higher activity in the synthesis of di-2-ethylhexyl carbonate (DEHC) from dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and 2-ethylhexanol (EHOH).
The acidity and catalytic behavior of Mg-ZSM-5 prepared via solid-state reaction

Abstract:A series of Mg-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with different content of magnesium were prepared via a solid-state reaction of HZSM-5 with magnesium chloride at 327°C. X-ray determinations demonstrated that the structure and crystallinity of the catalysts were not changed as compared with HZSM-5 zeolite. The acidity of the catalysts was characterized by temperature programmed desorption of ammonia and infrared spectra of pyridine adsorption. The studies indicated that their Brønsted acid sites decreased and Lewis acid sites slightly increased with increasing magnesium amount in the zeolites. The catalytic properties of the catalysts have been examined by choosing the alkylation of toluene with methanol as probe reaction. The results showed that the modified zeolite catalysts significantly improved the initial activity and lifetime. Para -selectivity also increases to a level of 80–90%. These results indicate that the solid-state reaction is an effective and convenient route for modification of the zeolite.

Abstract:Y Zeolite plays an irreplaceable role in many important applications due to its unique physicochemical properties, which has attracted extensive attention from researchers. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the process parameters for the hydrothermal synthesis of Y zeolite using kaolin activated by microwave heating. The best relative crystallinity was 108.17% could be achieved at the condition: the aging temperature of guiding agent was 65 ℃, the crystallization temperature was 100 ℃, the crystallization time was 24 h. In addition, the aging temperature of guiding agent was the most important influence factor. Under the optimal condition, the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of synthesized Y zeolite was 4.54, 90% of the particle size was less than 60 μm, and the specific surface area of Y zeolite was 479 m2/g. The successful preparation of Y zeolite with high crystallinity is expected to provide reference for the application of wastewater treatment, CO2 sequestration and fluid catalytic cracking for petroleum.
