Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of degenerate hyperbolic equations and prove the existence of smooth solutions for Cauchy problems. The existence result is based on a priori estimates of Sobolev norms of solutions. Such estimates illustrate a loss of derivatives because of the degeneracy.

Abstract:We study the well-posedness of renormalized entropy solutions to the Cauchy problem for general degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations of the formpartial derivative(t)u + Sigma(d)(i=1)partial derivative(xi)f(i)(u,t,x) = Sigma(d)(i,j=1) partial derivative(xj)(a(ij)(u,t,x)partial derivative(xi)u) + gamma(t,x)with initial data u(0, x) = u(0)(x), where the convection flux function f, the diffusion function a, and the source term gamma depend explicitly on the independent variables t and x. We prove the uniqueness by using KruZkov's device of doubling variables and the existence by using vanishing viscosity method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic system with constant multiple and linearly degenerate characteristic fields. We prove that the global C1 solution exists uniquely if the BV norm of the initial data is sufficiently small. Based on the existence result on the global classical solution, we show that, when the time t tends to the infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C1 traveling wave solutions. Finally, we give an application to the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space–time R1+n.

Abstract:Consider a linearly degenerate hyperbolic system of rich type. Assuming that each eigenvalue of the system has a constant multiplicity, we construct a representation formula of entropy solutions in L-infinity to the Cauchy problem. This formula depends on the solution of an autonomous system of ordinary differential equations taking x as parameter. We prove that for smooth initial data, the Cauchy problem for such an autonomous system admits a unique global solution. By using this formula together with classical compactness arguments, we give a very simple proof on the global existence of entropy solutions. Moreover, in a particular case of the system, we obtain an another explicit expression and the uniqueness of the entropy Solution. Applications include the one-dimensional Born-Infeld system and linear Lagrangian systems. (C) 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the well-posedness (existence and uniqueness) of the Lp entropy solution to the homogeneous Dirichlet problems for the anisotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with Lp initial value. We use the device of doubling variables and some technical analysis to prove the uniqueness result. Moreover we can prove that the Lp entropy solution can be obtained as the limit of solutions of the corresponding regularized equations of nondegenerate parabolic type.

Abstract:This paper investigates the initial boundary value problem of finitely degenerate semilinear pseudo-parabolic equations associated with Hörmander's operator. For the low and critical initial energies, based on the global existence of solutions in the previous literature, we investigate the exponential decay estimate of the energy functional. Moreover, we provide a method different from the previous literature to prove the finite time blow-up of solutions under low and critical initial energies, and derive the upper bounds of blow-up time and the rate as well as the exponential growth estimate of blow-up solutions. Furthermore, we prove the existence of global solutions and blow-up solutions at high initial energy. In particular, we establish a blow-up condition independent of the mountain pass level and provide the upper bound of blow-up time and the exponential growth estimate of blow-up solutions, and further we prove the existence of blow-up solutions with arbitrary initial energy by utilizing this blow-up condition. Finally, we determine a lower bound of the blow-up rate for all the above-mentioned blow-up solutions. These results complement the ones obtained in the previous literature.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the parabolic deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation with hypercritical phase in a smooth domain Î© âŠ‚ C n \Omega \subset \mathbb {C}^{n} . By using J J -functional, we are able to prove the convergence of solutions. As an application, we give an alternative proof of the Dirichlet problem for deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the well-posedness (existence and uniqueness) of entropy solutions to the general anisotropic degenerate parabolic–hyperbolic equations with L∞ initial data and homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We use the doubling variables device to prove a comparison theorem, which implies the uniqueness. The existence of entropy solutions can be obtained by finding the limit of solutions for the regularized equation of strictly parabolic type.

Abstract:We consider the following polyharmonic equation with critical exponent {[ (-Δ )^m u = K(|y|)u^m^*-1,u>0 in B_1(0),; u ∈𝒟_0^m,2(B_1(0)), ]. where m>0 is a integer, m^*=:2N/N-2m , B_1(0) is the unit ball in ℝ^N , N ≥ 2m+4 , K:[0,1] →ℝ^N is a bounded function, K'(1)>0 and K”(1) exists. We prove a non-degeneracy result of the non-radial solutions constructed in Guo and Li (Calc Var PDEs 46(3–4):809–836, 2013) via the local Pohozaev identities for N ≥ 2m+4 . Then we apply the non-degeneracy result to obtain new existence of non-radial solutions for N ≥ 6m .

Abstract:In this paper, we first consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems with weak linear degeneracy. The existence of global classical solutions for small and decay initial data was established in (Commun. Partial Differential Equations 1994; 19:1263-1317; Nonlinear Anal. 1997; 28:1299-1322; Chin. Ann. Math. 2004; 25B:37-56). We give a new, very simple proof of this result and also give a sharp point-wise decay estimate of the solution. Then, we consider the mixed initial-boundary-value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in the first quadrant. Under the assumption that the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, the global existence of classical solution with small and decay initial and boundary data was established in (Discrete Continuous Dynamical Systems 2005; 12(1):59-78; Zhou and Yang, in press).
