Abstract:In this paper, we study the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of classical solution of the Cauchy problem for quasilinear hyperbolic system with constant multiple and linearly degenerate characteristic fields. We prove that the global C1 solution exists uniquely if the BV norm of the initial data is sufficiently small. Based on the existence result on the global classical solution, we show that, when the time t tends to the infinity, the solution approaches a combination of C1 traveling wave solutions. Finally, we give an application to the equation for time-like extremal surfaces in the Minkowski space–time R1+n.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the mixed initial-boundary value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in a half-unbounded domain {(t, x)\ t greater than or equal to 0, x greater than or equal to 0}. Under the assumption that, the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, we obtain the global existence and uniqueness of C-1 solution with small and decaying initial data. Some applications are given for the system of the planar motion of an elastic string.

Abstract:It is proven that if the leftmost eigenvalue is weakly linearly degenerate, then the Cauchy problem for a class of nonhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small and decaying initial data given on a semi-bounded axis admits a unique global C1 solution on the domain {(t,x)|t⩾0,x⩾xn(t)}, where x=xn(t) is the fastest forward characteristic emanating from the origin. As an application of our result, we prove the existence of global classical, C1 solutions of the flow equations of a model class of fluids with viscosity induced by fading memory with small smooth initial data given on a semi-bounded axis.

Abstract:The author considers the life-span of classical solutions to Cauchy problem for general first order quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems in two independent variables with "slow" decay initial data. By constructing an example, first it is illustrated that the classical solution to this kind of Cauchy problem may blow up in a finite time, even if the system is weakly linearly degenerate. Then some lower bounds of the life-span of classical solutions are given in the casethat the system is weakly linearly degenerate. These estimates imply that, when the system is weakly linearly degenerate, the classical solution exists almost globally in time. Finally, it is proved that Theorems 1.1-1.3 in [2] are still valid for this kind of initial data.

Abstract:In this paper, we first consider the Cauchy problem for quasilinear strictly hyperbolic systems with weak linear degeneracy. The existence of global classical solutions for small and decay initial data was established in (Commun. Partial Differential Equations 1994; 19:1263-1317; Nonlinear Anal. 1997; 28:1299-1322; Chin. Ann. Math. 2004; 25B:37-56). We give a new, very simple proof of this result and also give a sharp point-wise decay estimate of the solution. Then, we consider the mixed initial-boundary-value problem for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions in the first quadrant. Under the assumption that the positive eigenvalues are weakly linearly degenerate, the global existence of classical solution with small and decay initial and boundary data was established in (Discrete Continuous Dynamical Systems 2005; 12(1):59-78; Zhou and Yang, in press). Abstract:For 1-D quasilinear hyperbolic systems, the strict dissipation or the weak linear degeneracy can prevent the formation of singularity. More precisely, if all the inhomogeneous sources are strictly dissipative, or all the characteristics are weakly linearly degenerate and the system is homogeneous, then the Cauchy problem with small and decaying initial data admits a unique global classical solution. In this paper, under some suitable hypotheses on the interaction, new kinds of weighted formulas of wave decomposition are developed to show the same result for a general class of combined systems, in which a part of equations possesses the strict dissipation and the others are weakly linearly degenerate. Abstract:Consider a quasi-linear system of two Klein–Gordon equations with masses m1, m2. We prove that when m1≠2m2 and m2≠2m1, such a system has global solutions for small, smooth, compactly supported Cauchy data. This extends a result proved by Sunagawa (J. Differential Equations 192 (2) (2003) 308) in the semi-linear case. Moreover, we show that global existence holds true also when m1=2m2 and a convenient null condition is satisfied by the nonlinearities.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the C0 boundedness of solution implies the global existence and uniqueness of C1 solution to the mixed initial-boundary value problem for linearly degenerate, reducible quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear boundary conditions and we show by an example that the C0 norm of solution may blow up in a finite time. This gives the mechanism of the formation of singularities caused by the interaction of boundary conditions with nonlinear hyperbolic waves. The same result is still valid for the quasilinear hyperbolic system of rich type.
