Abstract:Schrodinger cat states are crucial for exploration of fundamental issues of quantum mechanics and have important applications in quantum information processing. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for manipulating cat states in a cavity with the Aharonov-Anandan phase acquired by a superconducting qubit, which is dispersively coupled to the cavity. Based on this dispersive coupling, the qubit can be forced to trace out a circuit in the projective Hilbert space conditional on one coherent state. By preparing the cavity in a superposition of two coherent states, the geometric phase associated with this transport is encoded to the relative probability amplitude of these two coherent states. We demonstrate the photon-number parity of a cat state in a cavity can be controlled by adjusting this geometric phase, which offers the possibility for protecting its quantum coherence from single-photon loss. Based on this geometric effect, we realize phase gates for one and two photonic qubits whose logical basis states are encoded in two quasi-orthogonal coherent states. We further demonstrate two-cavity gates with symmetric and asymmetric Fock state encoding schemes. Our method can be directly extended to implementation of controlled-phase gates between error-correctable logical qubits.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to engineer quantum superpositions of coherent states ("Schrodinger-cat states") of propagating optical pulses. Multidimensional and multipartite cat states can be generated simply by reflecting coherent optical pulses successively from a single-atom cavity. The influences of various sources of noise, including atomic spontaneous emission and pulse-shape distortion, are characterized through detailed numerical simulation, which demonstrates the practicality of this scheme within the reach of current experimental technology.

Abstract:The Schrodinger cat states can be generated by conditional measurement on the atom in the Jaynes-Cumming model with Kerr medium. The special states such as even coherent state, odd coherent state and Yurke-Stoler coherent state may be acquired by further selecting some suitable parameters such as the time of measurement, initial state of atom and Kerr nonlinear constant. The sub-Poisson distribution can be revealed under the high field approximation only in the existence of Kerr medium.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract:Optical Schrodinger's cat (SC) is highly anticipated because of the potential of realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing, but the practical merit is only shown when the amplitude is larger than 2. However, such high-amplitude cats have not been prepared due to the limitations rooted in the existing method. Here, we demonstrate a principle that a large SC-like state can be generated by the superposition of two kittens in which two nearby coherent states interfere and grow to an enlarged coherent-like state. Further, we propose a scheme to breed the cat beyond the limitation in the former works with a high probability by realizing the superposition of two SCs in coupled waveguides. The principle and scheme demonstrated here provide a new perspective on understanding quantum superposition in phase space and a better solution for the efficient generation of SCs on chips.

Abstract:Cat states are a valuable resource for quantum metrology applications, promising to enable sensitivity down to the Heisenberg limit. Moreover, Schrödinger cat states, based on a coherent superposition of coherent states, show robustness against phase-flip errors making them a promising candidate for bosonic quantum codes. A pathway to realize cat states is via utilizing single Kerr-type anharmonicities as found in superconducting devices as well as in Rydberg atoms. Such platforms nevertheless utilize only the second order anharmonicity, which limits the time it takes for a cat state to be prepared. Here we show how proper tuning of multiple higher order nonlinear interactions leads to shorter cat state preparation time. We also discuss practical aspects including an optimal control scheme which allows us to start the state preparation from the vacuum state under standard single mode driving. Lastly, we propose an ensemble of Rydberg atoms that exhibits higher order nonlinearities as a platform to prepare cat states in the laboratory.

Abstract:When two equal photon-number states are combined on a balanced beam splitter, both output ports of the beam splitter contain only even numbers of photons. Consider the time-reversal of this interference phenomenon: the probability that a pair of photon-number-resolving detectors at the output ports of a beam splitter both detect the same number of photons depends on the overlap between the input state of the beam splitter and a state containing only even photon numbers. Here, we propose using this even-parity detection to engineer quantum states containing only even photon-number terms. As an example, we demonstrate the ability to prepare superpositions of two coherent states with opposite amplitudes, i.e. two-component Schrödinger cat states. Our scheme can prepare cat states of arbitrary size with nearly perfect fidelity. Moreover, we investigate engineering more complex even-parity states such as four-component cat states by iteratively applying our even-parity detector.

Abstract:Superposition is one of unusual features in quantum mechanics. This paper investigates the properties of multi-component Schrödinger cat state, generated by amplitude dispersion. The geometrical imaginary of the multi-component Schrödinger cat state is studied, and the entropy of the geometrical imaginary is proposed. This entropy is inverse proportional to the amplitude of the initial coherent state in the large amplitude regime. Additionally, the superposition of the multi-component cat state can be vividly displayed by the Wigner function and the Pegg–Barnett phase operator.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare optical Schr\"odinger-cat states in a traveling wave setting. Two states are similarly prepared via the self-Kerr effect and after mixing them, one mode is measured by homodyne detection. In the other mode a superposition of coherent states is conditionally prepared. The advantage of the scheme is that assuming a small Kerr effect one can prepare with high probability one from a set of Schr\"odinger-cat states. The measured value of the quadrature provides the information, which state from the set is actually prepared.

Abstract:We propose a dynamical scheme for deterministically amplifying photonic Schroedinger cat states based on a set of optimal state-transfers. The scheme can be implemented in strongly coupled qubit-cavity systems and is well suited to the capabilities of state of the art superconducting circuits. The ideal analytical scheme is compared with a full simulation of the open Jaynes-Cummings model with realistic device parameters. This amplification tool can be utilized for practical quantum information processing in non-classical continuous-variable states.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate spin cat states, i.e., superpositions of maximally separated quasiclassical states on a single high-dimensional nuclear spin in a solid-state device. We exploit a strong quadrupolar nonlinearity to drive the nucleus significantly faster than usual gate sequences, achieving collapses and revivals two orders of magnitude faster than the dephasing timescale. Furthermore, these states are engineered without entanglement with an ancilla, hence, are robust against error propagation. With our multitone control, we can realize arbitrary high-spin rotations within an experimentally feasible regime, as well as transform a spin coherent state to a spin cat state using only phase modulation, opening the possibility of storing and manipulating high-fidelity cat states.

Abstract:The Schrödinger cat (SC) states are important in quantum optics because of their non-Gaussian properties. We propose a novel method of conditional generation of bright (multi-photon) SC states that uses degenerate parametric down-conversion and heralding measurement of the photon number in the pump mode. We show that this method, in principle, could be implemented using the modern high-\(Q\) optical microresonators.
