Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract:The entanglement of pair cat states in the phase damping channel is studied by employing the relative entropy of entanglement. It is shown that the pair cat states can always be distillable in the phase damping channel. Furthermore, we analyze the fidelity of teleportation for the pair cat states by using joint measurements of the photon-number sum and phase difference.

Abstract:We investigate the entanglement swapping of the continuous variable states by taking the pair Schrödinger cat states as the input entangled states, in which the two-mode squeezed vacuum and the pair cat states serve as the quantum channel, respectively. The entanglement of the initial states as well as the final states is analyzed by adopting the logarithmic negativity as the measure of entanglement. The quantum teleportation task by exploiting the swapped states as the quantum channel is also considered, where a coherent state serves as the target state and the average fidelity is examined.

Abstract:When two equal photon-number states are combined on a balanced beam splitter, both output ports of the beam splitter contain only even numbers of photons. Consider the time-reversal of this interference phenomenon: the probability that a pair of photon-number-resolving detectors at the output ports of a beam splitter both detect the same number of photons depends on the overlap between the input state of the beam splitter and a state containing only even photon numbers. Here, we propose using this even-parity detection to engineer quantum states containing only even photon-number terms. As an example, we demonstrate the ability to prepare superpositions of two coherent states with opposite amplitudes, i.e. two-component Schrödinger cat states. Our scheme can prepare cat states of arbitrary size with nearly perfect fidelity. Moreover, we investigate engineering more complex even-parity states such as four-component cat states by iteratively applying our even-parity detector.

Abstract:Quantum Schrodinger cat states are of great interest in quantum communications and quantum optics. These states are used in various scientific fields such as quantum computing, quantum error correction and high-precision measurements. The analysis of the Schrodinger cat states coherence is an important task for their complete practical application. Our developed approach makes it possible to estimate the coherence of the quantum Schrodinger cat state of arbitrary dimension, as well as to find the interference visibility of the state - an important optical characteristic. The obtained simple quantitative relationship between coherence and the Schmidt number, as well as the developed approach of reducing the multidimensional quantum cat state to a two-mode analog allow us to analyze macroscopic states formed by a large number of modes. Several explicit formulas for the reduced states that arise after measuring of some modes of the considered multimode system are obtained. The research results have significant application and can be used in the development of high-dimensional quantum information processing systems.

Abstract:In quantum information processing, two primary research directions have emerged: one based on discrete variables (DV) and the other on the structure of quantum states in a continuous-variable (CV) space. It is increasingly recognized that integrating these two approaches could unlock new potentials, overcoming the inherent limitations of each. Here, we show that such a DV-CV hybrid approach, applied to superconducting Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs), enables us to entangle a pair of Schrödinger's cat states by two straightforward methods. The first method involves the entanglement-preserving and deterministic conversion between Bell states in the Fock-state basis (DV encoding) and those in the cat-state basis (CV encoding). This method would allow us to construct quantum networks in the cat-state basis using conventional schemes originally developed for the Fock-state basis. In the second method, the $\sqrt{\textrm{iSWAP}}$ gate operation is implemented between two cat states following the procedure used for Fock-state encoding. This DV-like gate operation on CV encoding not only completes the demonstration of a universal quantum gate set in a KPO system but also enables faster and simpler gate operations compared to previous SWAP gate implementations on bosonic modes. Our work offers a simple yet powerful application of DV-CV hybridization while also highlighting the scalability of this planar KPO system.

Abstract:Schrödinger’s cat originates from the famous thought experiment querying the counterintuitive quantum superposition of macroscopic objects. As a natural extension, several “cats” (quasi-classical objects) can be prepared into coherent quantum superposition states, which is known as multipartite cat states demonstrating quantum entanglement among macroscopically distinct objects. Here, we present a highly scalable approach to deterministically create flying multipartite Schrödinger’s cat states by reflecting coherent-state photons from a microwave cavity containing a superconducting qubit. We perform full quantum state tomography on the cat states with up to four photonic modes and confirm the existence of quantum entanglement among them. We also witness the hybrid entanglement between discrete-variable states (the qubit) and continuous-variable states (the flying multipartite cat) through a joint quantum state tomography. Our work provides an enabling step for implementing a series of quantum metrology and quantum information processing protocols based on cat states.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to engineer quantum superpositions of coherent states ("Schrodinger-cat states") of propagating optical pulses. Multidimensional and multipartite cat states can be generated simply by reflecting coherent optical pulses successively from a single-atom cavity. The influences of various sources of noise, including atomic spontaneous emission and pulse-shape distortion, are characterized through detailed numerical simulation, which demonstrates the practicality of this scheme within the reach of current experimental technology.

Abstract:Non-Gaussian continuous-variable states play a central role both in the foundations of quantum theory and for emergent quantum technologies. In particular, "cat states," i.e., two-component macroscopic quantum superpositions, embody quantum coherence in an accessible way and can be harnessed for fundamental tests and quantum information tasks alike. Degenerate optical parametric oscillators can naturally produce single-mode cat states and thus represent a promising platform for their realization and harnessing. We show that a dissipative coupling between degenerate optical parametric oscillators extends this to two-mode entangled cat states, i.e., two-mode entangled cat states are naturally produced under such dissipative coupling. While overcoming single-photon loss still represents a major challenge towards the realization of sufficiently pure single-mode cat states in degenerate optical parametric oscillators, we show that the generation of two-mode entangled cat states under such dissipative coupling can then be achieved without additional hurdles. We numerically explore the parameter regime for the successful generation of transient two-mode entangled cat states in two dissipatively coupled degenerate optical parametric oscillators. To certify the cat-state entanglement, we employ a tailored, variance-based entanglement criterion, which can robustly detect cat-state entanglement under realistic conditions.

Abstract:We propose a dynamical scheme for deterministically amplifying photonic Schroedinger cat states based on a set of optimal state-transfers. The scheme can be implemented in strongly coupled qubit-cavity systems and is well suited to the capabilities of state of the art superconducting circuits. The ideal analytical scheme is compared with a full simulation of the open Jaynes-Cummings model with realistic device parameters. This amplification tool can be utilized for practical quantum information processing in non-classical continuous-variable states.

Abstract:Schrodinger cat states are crucial for exploration of fundamental issues of quantum mechanics and have important applications in quantum information processing. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for manipulating cat states in a cavity with the Aharonov-Anandan phase acquired by a superconducting qubit, which is dispersively coupled to the cavity. Based on this dispersive coupling, the qubit can be forced to trace out a circuit in the projective Hilbert space conditional on one coherent state. By preparing the cavity in a superposition of two coherent states, the geometric phase associated with this transport is encoded to the relative probability amplitude of these two coherent states. We demonstrate the photon-number parity of a cat state in a cavity can be controlled by adjusting this geometric phase, which offers the possibility for protecting its quantum coherence from single-photon loss. Based on this geometric effect, we realize phase gates for one and two photonic qubits whose logical basis states are encoded in two quasi-orthogonal coherent states. We further demonstrate two-cavity gates with symmetric and asymmetric Fock state encoding schemes. Our method can be directly extended to implementation of controlled-phase gates between error-correctable logical qubits.

Abstract:Schrödinger cat states, which are superpositions of macroscopically distinct states, are potentially critical resources for upcoming quantum information technologies. In this paper, we introduce a scheme to generate entangled Schrödinger cat states in a non-relativistic electric dipole system situated on a two-dimensional plane, along with an external potential and a uniform strong magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Additionally, our findings demonstrate that this setup can lead to the phenomenon of collapse and revival of entanglement for a specific range of our model parameters

Abstract:Strong laser-atom interactions can produce highly non-classical states of light by using the process of high-harmonic generation in atoms. When the high-harmonic generation is present, the quantum state of the fundamental mode following the interaction is known as the Schrödinger cat state, which is a superposition of the laser's initial coherent state and the coherent state with a smaller amplitude that results from its interaction with atoms. Here, we demonstrate that new light states with significantly different Wigner function distributions can be produced by combining two separate Schrödinger cat states. Through the engineering of Schrödinger cat states' parameters, we are able to produce Wigner functions that exhibit high sensitivity in relation to the system parameter. Our research paves the way for the creation of non-classical light by superposing Schrödinger cat states with application in such as quantum sensing.

We show that this method, in principle, could be implemented using the modern high-$Q$ optical microresonators.

Abstract:Parallel worlds are imaginative ideas in quantum mechanics and cosmology. The superpositions of parallel worlds are novel states of quantum gravity and have no classical correspondences generally. In this letter, we investigate the superposition or the Schrödinger's cat state of optical parallel worlds, which could be realized in laboratory and may shed some light on the detection of parallel universes in a real world. We propose two realizable experimental schemes, which enable to explore the mysterious `parallel universes' by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The first one is based on an atomic ensemble in a superposition state, which is a fat Schrödinger's cat state. The second one is to prepare a photon in a superposition of different paths, where each path lies in an optical parallel universe.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinct classical states, so-called Schrödinger cat states, are a resource for quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum computation. In particular, the superpositions of two opposite-phase coherent states in an oscillator encode a qubit protected against phase-flip errors. However, several challenges have to be overcome in order for this concept to become a practical way to encode and manipulate error-protected quantum information. The protection must be maintained by stabilizing these highly excited states and, at the same time, the system has to be compatible with fast gates on the encoded qubit and a quantum non-demolition readout of the encoded information. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a novel method for the generation and stabilization of Schrödinger cat states based on the interplay between Kerr nonlinearity and single-mode squeezing in a superconducting microwave resonator. We show an increase in transverse relaxation time of the stabilized, error-protected qubit over the single-photon Fock-state encoding by more than one order of magnitude. We perform all single-qubit gate operations on time-scales more than sixty times faster than the shortest coherence time and demonstrate single-shot readout of the protected qubit under stabilization. Our results showcase the combination of fast quantum control with the robustness against errors intrinsic to stabilized macroscopic states and open up the possibility of using these states as resources in quantum information processing.
