Abstract:Entanglement evolution of two independent Jaynes-Cummings atoms without rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is studied by an numerically exact approach. The previous results in the RWA are essentially modified in the strong coupling regime ($g\ge 0.1$), which has been reached in the recent experiments on the flux qubit coupled to the LC resonator. For the initial Bell state with anti-correlated spins, the entanglement sudden death (ESD) is absent in the RWA, but does appear in the present numerical calculation without RWA. Aperiodic entanglement evolution in the strong coupling regime is observed. The strong atom-cavity coupling facilitates the ESD. The sign of detuning play a essential role in the entanglement evolution for strong coupling, which is irrelevant in the RWA. An analytical results based on an unitary transformation are also given, which could not modify the RWA picture essentially. It is suggested that the activation of the photons may be the origin of the ESD. The present theoretical results could be applied to artificial atoms realized in recent experiments.

Abstract:The Schrodinger cat states can be generated by conditional measurement on the atom in the Jaynes-Cumming model with Kerr medium. The special states such as even coherent state, odd coherent state and Yurke-Stoler coherent state may be acquired by further selecting some suitable parameters such as the time of measurement, initial state of atom and Kerr nonlinear constant. The sub-Poisson distribution can be revealed under the high field approximation only in the existence of Kerr medium.

Abstract:It is proven in this paper that some kinds of nonclassical quantum states of the cavity field, such as Schrodinger cat stale (amplitude cat or phase cat), sub-Poissonian photon distribution and Fock state, etc., can be generated by conditional measurements on atoms in the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model with a Kerr-like medium. The nonlinear constant plays the key modulation role in the preparation of the quantum states, which gives a new controllable parameter for further experimental researches in this field.

Abstract:The modified Jaynes-Cummings model of a single two-level atom placed in the common domain of two cavities or interacting with two quantized modes is studied by a dynamical algebraic method. With the help of an SU(2) algebraic structure, we then obtain the eigenvalues, eigenstates, time evolution operator and atomic inversion operator for the system. We proceed to investigate the modified Jaynes-Cummings model governed by the Milburn equation and present the exact solution of the Milburn equation.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the effects of the gravitational field on the dynamical evolution of the cavity-field entropy and the creation of the Schrodinger-cat state in the Jaynes-Cummings model. We consider a moving two-level atom interacting with a single mode quantized cavity-field in the presence of a classical homogeneous gravitational field. Based on an su(2) algebra, as the dynamical symmetry group of the model, we derive the reduced density operator of the cavity-field which includes the effects of the atomic motion and the gravitational field. Also, we obtain the exact solution and the approximate solution for the system-state vector, and examine the atomic dynamics. By considering the temporal evolution of the cavity-field entropy as well as the dynamics of the Q-function of the cavity-field we study the effects of the gravitational field on the generation of the Schrodinger-cat states of the cavity-field by using the Q-function, field entropy and approximate solution for the system-state vector. The results show that the gravitational field destroys the generation of the Schrodinger-cat state of the cavity-field.

Schrödinger cats coupled with cavities losses: the effect of finite and structured reservoirs

Abstract:We discuss the generation of a Schrödinger cat in a nanocavity created by the coupling of an electromagnetic mode with an exciton in a quantum dot considering the dispersive limit of the Jaynes-Cummings model. More than the generation itself, we focus on the effects of the environment over the bosonic state in the nanocavity, which has losses simulated by coupling with two different kind of reservoirs. In the first case, the interaction between the system with a finite reservoir shows that fragments of different sizes of the reservoir deliver the same amount of information about the physical system in the dynamics of the birth and death of the Schrödinger cat. The second case considers a structured reservoir, whose spectral density varies significantly with frequency. This situation becomes relevant in solid-state devices where quantum channels are embedded, as memory effects generally cannot be neglected. Under these circumstances, it is observed that the dynamics can differ substantially from the Markovian, presenting oscillations related to the average number of photons. These oscillations influence the information flow between the system and the environment, evidenced here by the measurement of non-Markovianity.

Engineering Entangled Schrodinger Cat States of Separated Cavity Modes in Cavity-QED

Abstract:We provide a scheme by utilizing a two-cavity setup to generate useful quantum mechanically entangled states of two cavity fields, which themselves are prepared in Schrodinger cat states. The underlying atom-field interaction is considered off-resonant and three atoms are successively sent through the cavities, initially fed with coherent fields. Analytical solution of the protocol, followed by conditional measurements on the atoms, produce a family of eight such entangled states. Entanglement properties of the obtained states are characterized by the Von Neumann entropy. We reveal the parameter domain for tuning the entanglement, the prime tuning parameters being the atom-field interaction time and the field amplitudes. The parameter domains for both quasi-Bell and non quasi-Bell states are discussed. We also present a Wigner phase space representation of the reduced state of the cavity, showing negative values and interference patterns similar to those of a compass state, used in quantum precision measurements, and despite its large entropy.

Abstract:A scheme for generating the Schrödinger cat state based on geometric operations by a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting charge qubit is proposed. The charge qubit, driven by two strong classical fields, interacts with a high‐frequency phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator. During the operation, the charge qubit undergoes no real transitions, while the phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator is displaced along different paths in the phase space, dependent on the states of the charge qubit. This generates the entangled cat state between the NAMR and charge qubit, and the NAMR cat state can be achieved after some operations applied on this entangled cat state. The robustness of the scheme is justified by considering noise from environment, and the feasibility of the scheme is discussed.

Abstract:We propose a fast scheme to generate Schrödinger cat states in a superconducting resonator using a continuously driven qubit without resorting to the dispersive regime, two-photon drives, or engineered two-photon dissipation. We provide analysis for when the qubit is on and off resonance from the drive. We extend our analysis to account for a third level in a weakly-anharmonic qutrit. We also discuss the case of a strongly-anharmonic qutrit. Throughout the paper, we corroborate our analytical results with numerical simulations in the presence of energy relaxation and dephasing of the qubit and resonator using realistic experimental parameters.

Abstract:We propose a method to generate the entangled quantum states of a field via the nonresonant interaction of a two-level atom with a two-mode field. When the detuning between the atomic transition frequency and the frequency of each mode is much larger than the coupling constant, the photon statistical distribution of the field will not be changed during the interaction of the atom with the field, while the phase of the field will evolve with time. By state-selective measurements on the atom, we can produce the entangled coherent states of the field if the two modes of the field are both in the coherent states initially. Entanglements of other states can also be generated by this method.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to engineer Schr\"{o}dinger-cat states of propagating optical pulses. Multi-dimensional and multi-partite cat states can be generated simply by reflecting coherent optical pulses successively from a single-atom cavity. The influences of various sources of noise, including the atomic spontaneous emission and the pulse shape distortion, are characterized through detailed numerical simulation, which demonstrates practicality of this scheme within the reach of current experimental technology.
Generating Large Cats with Nine Lives: Long-Lived Macroscopically Distinct Superposition States in Atomic Ensembles

Abstract:We propose to create and stabilize long-lived macroscopic quantum superposition states in atomic ensembles. We show that using a fully quantum parametric amplifier can cause the simultaneous decay of two atoms and, in turn, create stabilized atomic Schrödinger cat states. Remarkably, even with modest parameters these intracavity atomic cat states can have an extremely long lifetime, up to \emph{4 orders of magnitude} longer than that of intracavity photonic cat states under the same parameter conditions, reaching \emph{tens of milliseconds}. This lifetime of atomic cat states is ultimately limited to \emph{several seconds} by extremely weak spin relaxation and thermal noise. Our work opens up a new way toward the long-standing goal of generating large-size and long-lived cat states, with immediate interests both in fundamental studies and noise-immune quantum technologies.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract:Macroscopic entangled cat states not only are significant in the demonstration of the fundamentals of quantum physics, but also have wide applications in modern quantum technologies such as continuous-variable quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Here we propose a scheme for generation of macroscopic entangled cat states in a molecular cavity-QED system, which is composed of an organic molecule (including electronic and vibrational states) coupled to a single-mode cavity field. By simultaneously modulating the resonance frequencies of the molecular vibration and the cavity field, the molecular vibrational displacement can be enhanced significantly and hence macroscopic entangled cat states between the molecular vibrational mode and the cavity mode can be created. We also study quantum coherence effects in the generated states by calculating the joint Wigner function and the degree of entanglement. The dissipation effects are included by considering the state generation in the open-system case. Our results will pave the way to the study of quantum physics and quantum chemistry in molecular cavity-QED systems.
