Abstract:Mesoscopic superposition states of photons can be prepared in three cavities interacting with the same two-level atom. By periodically modulating the three cavity frequencies around the transition frequency of the atom with a 2π/3 phase difference, the time reversal symmetry is broken and an optical circulator is generated with chiralities depending on the quantum state of the atom. A superposition of the atomic states can guide photons from one cavity to a mesoscopic superposition of the other two cavities. The physics can be understood in a finite spin-orbit-coupled Fock-state lattice where the atom and the cavities carry the spin and the orbit degrees of freedom, respectively. This scheme can be realized in circuit QED architectures and provides a new platform for exploring quantum information and topological physics in novel lattices.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract: Superradiance and subradiance concerning enhanced and inhibited collective radiation of an ensemble of atoms have been a central topic in quantum optics. However, precise generation and control of these states remain challenging. Here we deterministically generate up to 10-qubit superradiant and 8-qubit subradiant states, each containing a single excitation, in a superconducting quantum circuit with multiple qubits interconnected by a cavity resonator. The $\sqrt{N}$-scaling enhancement of the coupling strength between the superradiant states and the cavity is validated. By applying appropriate phase gate on each qubit, we are able to switch the single collective excitation between superradiant and subradiant states. While the subradiant states containing a single excitation are forbidden from emitting photons, we demonstrate that they can still absorb photons from the resonator. However, for even number of qubits, a singlet state with half of the qubits being excited can neither emit nor absorb photons, which is verified with 4 qubits. This study is a step forward in coherent control of collective radiation and has promising applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract:Strong laser-atom interactions can produce highly non-classical states of light by using the process of high-harmonic generation in atoms. When the high-harmonic generation is present, the quantum state of the fundamental mode following the interaction is known as the Schrödinger cat state, which is a superposition of the laser's initial coherent state and the coherent state with a smaller amplitude that results from its interaction with atoms. Here, we demonstrate that new light states with significantly different Wigner function distributions can be produced by combining two separate Schrödinger cat states. Through the engineering of Schrödinger cat states' parameters, we are able to produce Wigner functions that exhibit high sensitivity in relation to the system parameter. Our research paves the way for the creation of non-classical light by superposing Schrödinger cat states with application in such as quantum sensing.

Multidimensional and multipartite cat states can be generated simply by reflecting coherent optical pulses successively from a single-atom cavity. The influences of various sources of noise, including atomic spontaneous emission and pulse-shape distortion, are characterized through detailed numerical simulation, which demonstrates the practicality of this scheme within the reach of current experimental technology.

Abstract:Due to the inherently probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, each experimental realization of a dynamical quantum system may yield a different measurement outcome, especially when the system is coupled to an environment that causes dissipation. Although it is in principle possible that some quantum trajectories lead to exotic highly entangled quantum states, the probability of observing these trajectories is usually extremely low. In this work, we show how to maximize the probability of generating highly entangled states, including maximally entangled cat states, in an ensemble of atoms experiencing superradiant decay. To this end, we analyze an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which governs the dynamics between the quantum jumps associated with photon emission. A key result of our study is that, in order to maximally enhance the probability of cat state generation, the initial state needs to be non-classical. This can be achieved e.g. with one-axis twisting in a cavity-QED system.

Generating Large Cats with Nine Lives: Long-Lived Macroscopically Distinct Superposition States in Atomic Ensembles

Abstract:We propose to create and stabilize long-lived macroscopic quantum superposition states in atomic ensembles. We show that using a fully quantum parametric amplifier can cause the simultaneous decay of two atoms and, in turn, create stabilized atomic Schrödinger cat states. Remarkably, even with modest parameters these intracavity atomic cat states can have an extremely long lifetime, up to \emph{4 orders of magnitude} longer than that of intracavity photonic cat states under the same parameter conditions, reaching \emph{tens of milliseconds}. This lifetime of atomic cat states is ultimately limited to \emph{several seconds} by extremely weak spin relaxation and thermal noise. Our work opens up a new way toward the long-standing goal of generating large-size and long-lived cat states, with immediate interests both in fundamental studies and noise-immune quantum technologies.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to generate spin cat states, i.e., superpositions of maximally separated quasiclassical states on a single high-dimensional nuclear spin in a solid-state device. We exploit a strong quadrupolar nonlinearity to drive the nucleus significantly faster than usual gate sequences, achieving collapses and revivals two orders of magnitude faster than the dephasing timescale. Furthermore, these states are engineered without entanglement with an ancilla, hence, are robust against error propagation. With our multitone control, we can realize arbitrary high-spin rotations within an experimentally feasible regime, as well as transform a spin coherent state to a spin cat state using only phase modulation, opening the possibility of storing and manipulating high-fidelity cat states.

Abstract:Multipartite entangled states are crucial for numerous applications in quantum information science. However, the generation and verification of multipartite entanglement on fully controllable and scalable quantum platforms remains an outstanding challenge. We report the deterministic generation of an 18-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and multicomponent atomic Schrödinger cat states of up to 20 qubits on a quantum processor, which features 20 superconducting qubits, also referred to as artificial atoms, interconnected by a bus resonator. By engineering a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian, the system of qubits, once initialized, coherently evolves to multicomponent atomic Schrödinger cat states-that is, superpositions of atomic coherent states including the GHZ state-at specific time intervals as expected. Our approach on a solid-state platform should not only stimulate interest in exploring the fundamental physics of quantum many-body systems, but also enable the development of applications in practical quantum metrology and quantum information processing.
Fast multicomponent cat-state generation under resonant or strong-dressing Rydberg-Kerr interaction

Abstract:Cat states are maximally entangled states with applications in metrology and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The experiments have revealed that Rydberg collective avalanche decoherence acts as the bottleneck for cat creation with Rydberg atoms. This process initiates after the black body radiation (BBR-)induced decay of Rydberg atoms and sets a strong limit on the cat creation time. These findings necessitate the exploration of new ideas to accelerate current Rydberg cat schemes. To enhance the interaction-to-loss ratio, this paper delves into cat state formation in the strong Rydberg dressing regime, uncovering the emergence of cat states despite the presence of complex orders of nonlinearities. This unexplored regime demonstrates the potential for rapid cat state formation, particularly beneficial for operation in typical 2D lattices in Rydberg Labs. In an extreme case, this article demonstrates that second-order nonlinearity could be isolated under resonant Rydberg driving if a large number of atoms are accommodated inside the blockade volume. The resonant model significantly enhances the interaction-to-loss ratio while circumventing the adiabaticity condition, allowing fast switching of lasers. In addition, the paper presents a method for generating multi-component cat states, which are superpositions of $m$ coherent spin states ($|m-\text{CSS}\rangle$). The maximum value of $m$ is determined by the number of atoms within the blockade radius, where $m=\sqrt{N}$. The states with larger $m$ are more robust against the presence of multiple orders of nonlinearity in the strong dressing Hamiltonian and are accessible in a much shorter time compared to traditional 2-component cat states.

Abstract:We provide an approach for preparing a superposition of atomic Bloch states. This approach is based on the coupling between a single-mode radiative field and a many-atom system. Under the condition of N (the number of atoms) going to infinity, the analytical solution of the time evolution of the coupling system is obtained. Then we discuss the problem with a special type of initial state, the optical Schrodinger cat state, and find a way to generate the so-called atomic Schrodinger cat state. Abstract:The Schrodinger cat states can be generated by conditional measurement on the atom in the Jaynes-Cumming model with Kerr medium. The special states such as even coherent state, odd coherent state and Yurke-Stoler coherent state may be acquired by further selecting some suitable parameters such as the time of measurement, initial state of atom and Kerr nonlinear constant. The sub-Poisson distribution can be revealed under the high field approximation only in the existence of Kerr medium.

Abstract:A scheme for generating the Schrödinger cat state based on geometric operations by a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting charge qubit is proposed. The charge qubit, driven by two strong classical fields, interacts with a high‐frequency phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator. During the operation, the charge qubit undergoes no real transitions, while the phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator is displaced along different paths in the phase space, dependent on the states of the charge qubit. This generates the entangled cat state between the NAMR and charge qubit, and the NAMR cat state can be achieved after some operations applied on this entangled cat state. The robustness of the scheme is justified by considering noise from environment, and the feasibility of the scheme is discussed.

Abstract:Optical Schrodinger's cat (SC) is highly anticipated because of the potential of realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing, but the practical merit is only shown when the amplitude is larger than 2. However, such high-amplitude cats have not been prepared due to the limitations rooted in the existing method. Here, we demonstrate a principle that a large SC-like state can be generated by the superposition of two kittens in which two nearby coherent states interfere and grow to an enlarged coherent-like state. Further, we propose a scheme to breed the cat beyond the limitation in the former works with a high probability by realizing the superposition of two SCs in coupled waveguides. The principle and scheme demonstrated here provide a new perspective on understanding quantum superposition in phase space and a better solution for the efficient generation of SCs on chips.
