Abstract:The Schrodinger cat states can be generated by conditional measurement on the atom in the Jaynes-Cumming model with Kerr medium. The special states such as even coherent state, odd coherent state and Yurke-Stoler coherent state may be acquired by further selecting some suitable parameters such as the time of measurement, initial state of atom and Kerr nonlinear constant. The sub-Poisson distribution can be revealed under the high field approximation only in the existence of Kerr medium.

Abstract:Non-Gaussian continuous-variable states play a central role both in the foundations of quantum theory and for emergent quantum technologies. In particular, "cat states," i.e., two-component macroscopic quantum superpositions, embody quantum coherence in an accessible way and can be harnessed for fundamental tests and quantum information tasks alike. Degenerate optical parametric oscillators can naturally produce single-mode cat states and thus represent a promising platform for their realization and harnessing. We show that a dissipative coupling between degenerate optical parametric oscillators extends this to two-mode entangled cat states, i.e., two-mode entangled cat states are naturally produced under such dissipative coupling. While overcoming single-photon loss still represents a major challenge towards the realization of sufficiently pure single-mode cat states in degenerate optical parametric oscillators, we show that the generation of two-mode entangled cat states under such dissipative coupling can then be achieved without additional hurdles. We numerically explore the parameter regime for the successful generation of transient two-mode entangled cat states in two dissipatively coupled degenerate optical parametric oscillators. To certify the cat-state entanglement, we employ a tailored, variance-based entanglement criterion, which can robustly detect cat-state entanglement under realistic conditions.
Engineering Entangled Schrodinger Cat States of Separated Cavity Modes in Cavity-QED

Abstract:We provide a scheme by utilizing a two-cavity setup to generate useful quantum mechanically entangled states of two cavity fields, which themselves are prepared in Schrodinger cat states. The underlying atom-field interaction is considered off-resonant and three atoms are successively sent through the cavities, initially fed with coherent fields. Analytical solution of the protocol, followed by conditional measurements on the atoms, produce a family of eight such entangled states. Entanglement properties of the obtained states are characterized by the Von Neumann entropy. We reveal the parameter domain for tuning the entanglement, the prime tuning parameters being the atom-field interaction time and the field amplitudes. The parameter domains for both quasi-Bell and non quasi-Bell states are discussed. We also present a Wigner phase space representation of the reduced state of the cavity, showing negative values and interference patterns similar to those of a compass state, used in quantum precision measurements, and despite its large entropy.

Abstract:We propose a method to generate the entangled quantum states of a field via the nonresonant interaction of a two-level atom with a two-mode field. When the detuning between the atomic transition frequency and the frequency of each mode is much larger than the coupling constant, the photon statistical distribution of the field will not be changed during the interaction of the atom with the field, while the phase of the field will evolve with time. By state-selective measurements on the atom, we can produce the entangled coherent states of the field if the two modes of the field are both in the coherent states initially. Entanglements of other states can also be generated by this method.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract:The state evolution of a system of two-mode optical fields interacting with a Kerr medium is investigated. It is discovered that at some special times the system evolves into a quantum superposition of a finite number of different macroscopically distinguishable two-mode coherent states, i.e., so-called two-mode Schrödinger-cat states. Especially the two-mode Yurke-Stoler state is achieved at half of the period of the system by taking proper parameters. The influence of detuning and dissipation on two-mode Schrödinger-cat states is also discussed.

Abstract:Quantum Schrodinger cat states are of great interest in quantum communications and quantum optics. These states are used in various scientific fields such as quantum computing, quantum error correction and high-precision measurements. The analysis of the Schrodinger cat states coherence is an important task for their complete practical application. Our developed approach makes it possible to estimate the coherence of the quantum Schrodinger cat state of arbitrary dimension, as well as to find the interference visibility of the state - an important optical characteristic. The obtained simple quantitative relationship between coherence and the Schmidt number, as well as the developed approach of reducing the multidimensional quantum cat state to a two-mode analog allow us to analyze macroscopic states formed by a large number of modes. Several explicit formulas for the reduced states that arise after measuring of some modes of the considered multimode system are obtained. The research results have significant application and can be used in the development of high-dimensional quantum information processing systems.

Abstract:Strong laser-atom interactions can produce highly non-classical states of light by using the process of high-harmonic generation in atoms. When the high-harmonic generation is present, the quantum state of the fundamental mode following the interaction is known as the Schrödinger cat state, which is a superposition of the laser's initial coherent state and the coherent state with a smaller amplitude that results from its interaction with atoms. Here, we demonstrate that new light states with significantly different Wigner function distributions can be produced by combining two separate Schrödinger cat states. Through the engineering of Schrödinger cat states' parameters, we are able to produce Wigner functions that exhibit high sensitivity in relation to the system parameter. Our research paves the way for the creation of non-classical light by superposing Schrödinger cat states with application in such as quantum sensing.

Abstract:Due to the inherently probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics, each experimental realization of a dynamical quantum system may yield a different measurement outcome, especially when the system is coupled to an environment that causes dissipation. Although it is in principle possible that some quantum trajectories lead to exotic highly entangled quantum states, the probability of observing these trajectories is usually extremely low. In this work, we show how to maximize the probability of generating highly entangled states, including maximally entangled cat states, in an ensemble of atoms experiencing superradiant decay. To this end, we analyze an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which governs the dynamics between the quantum jumps associated with photon emission. A key result of our study is that, in order to maximally enhance the probability of cat state generation, the initial state needs to be non-classical. This can be achieved e.g. with one-axis twisting in a cavity-QED system.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to prepare optical Schr\"odinger-cat states in a traveling wave setting. Two states are similarly prepared via the self-Kerr effect and after mixing them, one mode is measured by homodyne detection. In the other mode a superposition of coherent states is conditionally prepared. The advantage of the scheme is that assuming a small Kerr effect one can prepare with high probability one from a set of Schr\"odinger-cat states. The measured value of the quadrature provides the information, which state from the set is actually prepared.

Abstract:Cat states are maximally entangled states with applications in metrology and fault-tolerant quantum computation. The experiments have revealed that Rydberg collective avalanche decoherence acts as the bottleneck for cat creation with Rydberg atoms. This process initiates after the black body radiation (BBR-)induced decay of Rydberg atoms and sets a strong limit on the cat creation time. These findings necessitate the exploration of new ideas to accelerate current Rydberg cat schemes. To enhance the interaction-to-loss ratio, this paper delves into cat state formation in the strong Rydberg dressing regime, uncovering the emergence of cat states despite the presence of complex orders of nonlinearities. This unexplored regime demonstrates the potential for rapid cat state formation, particularly beneficial for operation in typical 2D lattices in Rydberg Labs. In an extreme case, this article demonstrates that second-order nonlinearity could be isolated under resonant Rydberg driving if a large number of atoms are accommodated inside the blockade volume. The resonant model significantly enhances the interaction-to-loss ratio while circumventing the adiabaticity condition, allowing fast switching of lasers. In addition, the paper presents a method for generating multi-component cat states, which are superpositions of $m$ coherent spin states ($|m-\text{CSS}\rangle$). The maximum value of $m$ is determined by the number of atoms within the blockade radius, where $m=\sqrt{N}$. The states with larger $m$ are more robust against the presence of multiple orders of nonlinearity in the strong dressing Hamiltonian and are accessible in a much shorter time compared to traditional 2-component cat states.

Abstract:Cat states are a valuable resource for quantum metrology applications, promising to enable sensitivity down to the Heisenberg limit. Moreover, Schrödinger cat states, based on a coherent superposition of coherent states, show robustness against phase-flip errors making them a promising candidate for bosonic quantum codes. A pathway to realize cat states is via utilizing single Kerr-type anharmonicities as found in superconducting devices as well as in Rydberg atoms. Such platforms nevertheless utilize only the second order anharmonicity, which limits the time it takes for a cat state to be prepared. Here we show how proper tuning of multiple higher order nonlinear interactions leads to shorter cat state preparation time. We also discuss practical aspects including an optimal control scheme which allows us to start the state preparation from the vacuum state under standard single mode driving. Lastly, we propose an ensemble of Rydberg atoms that exhibits higher order nonlinearities as a platform to prepare cat states in the laboratory.

Abstract:We provide an approach for preparing a superposition of atomic Bloch states. This approach is based on the coupling between a single-mode radiative field and a many-atom system. Under the condition of N (the number of atoms) going to infinity, the analytical solution of the time evolution of the coupling system is obtained. Then we discuss the problem with a special type of initial state, the optical Schrodinger cat state, and find a way to generate the so-called atomic Schrodinger cat state.
