Abstract:Laser forming is a highly flexible sheet metal forming technique. In laser forming along curved irradiation paths, the heated zone is bigger and the effects of the processing parameters on the deformation are complex. The deformation behaviors of laser forming of ring sheet metals have been investigated from the thermal-mechanics analysis by the finite element （FE） simulation based on the proposed finite element method model. The effects of ring central angle and scanning path on deformation of ring sheet metal were investigated. The results are as follows: （1） in comparison with the laser bending along linear path, the marked third point has two peak temperatures during the laser forming process along curved path; （2） the forming process fluctutes continuously and the sheet edge is warped because the rigid-ends effect due to the restriction of sheet; （3） when the ring central angle increases, the displacement difference of the marked three points decreases and then increases, and the warped curvature of sheet edge decreases; （4） when the laser beam diameter increases, the displacement difference of the marked three points decreases and the warped curvature increases.

Abstract:Laser forming has become a viable process for the shaping of metallic and non-metallic sheet components, as a means of rapid prototyping and of adjusting and aligning. In order to advance the laser forming process further for practical application in industry, the research of laser forming was performed on common stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9Ti sheet with a Nd:YAG laser source in this paper. In order to obtain convergent and highly accurate results in a reasonable time, a rezoning technique for laser heat flow density is used to adapt the mesh in the FEM simulations of low-velocity laser forming process, single pulse jump light source is applied in place of continuous scan of laser beam. It includes the empirical investigations to determine processing parameters using the temperature gradient mechanism to form different angles with simple straight line laser scanning. The simulation results of temperature field and deformation field of laser forming of metal sheets accord with the experimental results, which showed that the bending angle increases approximately linearly as the scanning times increase. And the bending angle firstly increases with the laser power increasing and begins to decrease at a certain processing parameters, as there is a certain power parameter resulting in a maximum bending angle for a certain material and parameters. The bending angle increases as the laser beam diameter increase and begins to decrease at a certain processing parameters, as a maximum bending angle is acquired when the beam diameter is the same as the thickness of the metal sheet. Bigger sheet thickness leads to smaller bending angles, and thickness is the most important influencing factor of bending angles. The bending angle increases with the sheet width, but there is a width limit bigger than which the sheet width has little influence on bending angles.

Abstract:The effect of rate dependence on laser shock forming(LSF) was investigated with experimental and numerical simulation.The displacement field of the treated brass and stainless steel specimens was examined and analyzed.ABAQUS was used to simulate LSF.The results show the maximum displacements of the brass and metal sheets are 0.462 mm and 0.076 mm respectively.For the rate dependent material,the deformation of the simulation matches the experimental results quite well if the rate dependence is considered.This research has laid foundation for the wide application of the LSF technology.

Abstract:Laser forming is a means of processing materials in a novel manner. The mechanical properties of specimens after laser forming are investigated. By tension tests, the tension properties are analyzed to establish Ramberg–Osgood constitutive equations under different laser processing parameters. Experimental data show that the yield strength and tensile strength are improved after laser forming, while the elongation percentage is reduced. Based on the distribution of residual stresses as well as residual strains after the laser forming process, the fatigue life under different laser processing parameters is studied using low-cycle fatigue tests. The residual compressive plastic strain is the most important reason for improving the fatigue life of low carbon steel after laser forming. The fatigue fracture mechanism is shown through the analysis of macro-fracture and micro-fracture using the scanning electronic microscope.

Abstract:Laser shock forming (LSF) of sheet metal is a new technique realized by applying an impulsive pressure generated by laser-induced shock wave on the surface of metal sheet. LSF of brass sheet metal was investigated using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with an energy per pulse of 15～50 joules. ABAQUS software was used to simulate laser shock forming process. The central displacement of the shocked region is measured and compared with the simulation. The higher pulse energy, the higher central displacement of the shocked region were obtained. The deformation of the simulation matches the experiment quite well.

Abstract:The edge effect phenomena would take place on plates after being formed under laser induced free forming technology, the finite element method ( FEM) was adopted to analyze the phenomena and the according to the stress analysis an scanning strategy-the discontinuous scanning strategy-to decrease the edge effect effectively was proposed. The results of the FEM analysis and the experiments indicated that the edge effect of the plate de-creased effectively when being formed with the new scanning strategy-the discontinuous scanning strategy.

Abstract:The laser shock forming was investigated with experimental and numerical simulation. The surface shape and deformation of the processed brass sample are examined and analyzed. ABAQUS is used to simulate laser shock forming. The results show the surface quality and the microstructure have no remarkable change; the biggest displacement of the shocked area is 0.991 mm, and the deformation of the simulation agrees with the experiment quite well.

The stresses are induced by the temperature grads of heat-affected-zone when a scanning laser beam goes along the sheet. Abstract:Laser forming is a highly flexible sheet metal forming technique. It's important to investigate the relationship between the distortion and process route. In this paper, the FEM is used to simulate the laser sine forming of sheet metal. The results show that the peak temperature values of laser sine scanning rise more rapidly with the same processing parameters. The shape and size of the distortional area are related to the scanning path. A circinal zone with large radius can represent the heated area of sheet. The warped phenomenon is mitigated when the chordal height decreases.

Abstract:Laser forming is a complex thermal–mechanical process. To reveal the mechanisms dominating the forming process is essential to control accurately the deformation of metal plate. Numerous efforts had been made to understand the mechanisms of laser forming. Proposed mechanisms mainly included temperature gradient mechanism, buckling mechanism and upsetting mechanism. However, in the investigation of laser forming, it is found that the above three mechanisms cannot depict fully the process of deformation. Based on the study of thermal transfer and elastic–plastic deformation, the above three mechanisms are further explained. In addition, a new mechanism, coupling mechanism, is proposed. To verify the validity of the mechanisms proposed, numerical simulations are carried out, and simulation results are consistent with analyses of mechanisms. Further analyses of forming mechanisms provide a theoretical basis for the scanning path and heating conditions as well as high-precision forming.

Abstract:In a laser forming process, different forming mechanisms have different deformation behaviors. The aim of laser forming is to acquire plane strain under an upsetting mechanism, while a plate undergoes a small bending deformation. In some industrial applications, the bending strain should not occur. To achieve high-precision forming, the deformation behaviors of a metal plate when an upsetting mechanism plays a dominant role are studied in the paper. Several heating methods are proposed to reduce the plane strain difference along the thickness direction and little bending deformation resulting from a small temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the plate. The results show that negligible bending deformation and a uniform plastic plane strain field can be obtained by simultaneously heating the top and bottom surfaces with the same process parameters. A conventional scanning method needs a larger spot diameter and slower scanning speed under the upsetting mechanism, but a smaller spot diameter and quicker scanning speed may be selected using the simultaneous heating method, which can greatly widen the potential scope of process parameters.

Abstract:An emerging process named laser compound forming of plate was presented by analyzing the advantages of laser thermal-stress forming (LTF) and laser peen forming (LPF) respectively. This technique combined the heat effect of continuous laser and mechanical effect of pulsed laser. Based on introducing the process of laser pre-stressed compound peen forming, the mechanism of plastic deformation and residual stress were analyzed. In order to apply pre-stressed load, a CO2 laser was used to scan SUS304 stainless plate according to the designed tracks firstly, the basic shape were formed and the contours of plate’s surface were measured by the optical scan measuring system, reverse engineering software Imageware was used to establish the virtual models of plate. Then the virtual models were inverted into finite element models by FEM code ABAQUS. The optimum distribution of residual stress field was obtained by adjusting laser parameters and controlling tracks of LPF. Finally, the optimized laser parameters and processing condition were used for LPF experiment. The results indicated that the anticipated shape could be obtained, and both side of the plate hold residual compressive stress after laser compound forming.

Abstract:Laser forming process analyzed under thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method can better understand the forming mechanism. However, it is very time consuming. This paper introduced the prediction of the deformation in laser forming based on the theory of inherent strain by finite element method (FEM). The relations between inherent strains and laser forming parameters based on some experimental curves and the thermo-elasto-plastic analysis can be determined, in which the inherent strains are assumed to be distributed in a rectangle shape. This method is much more convenient because only elastic analysis is involved. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through the comparison with the experimental data.

Abstract:Laser dynamic flexible forming (LDFF) is a novel high velocity forming (HVF) technology, in which the high-energy laser shock waves act on the workpiece via a flexible medium. Dynamic bulge tests of copper sheet are performed to investigate the deformation and fracture behaviors in LDFF in this paper. The laser ablation states on K9 glass surfaces under different laser energies were characterized. The samples after LDFF were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. For laser energy ranging from 1020 mJ to1380 mJ, as laser energy increases, the average surface roughness (Ra) in bulge region rapidly increases due to surface free forming. However, the Ra in laser shock compression region slowly decreases due to shock flattening. Strain localization occurs around the bulge edge, and the composition of oxygen element in this region is increased with laser energy. When laser energy is equal to or greater than 1690 mJ, localized deformation evolved into the dynamic failure. Apart from the elongated micro-voids, three interesting phenomena were observed: the melting marks, the serrated fracture boundaries and filaments. As the laser energy increases, the fracture mode varies from a tensile fracture mode to a shear fracture mode, then to a filament fracture mode. The filament fracture mode indicates that superplastic flow of material may exist until fracture, and oxidation behaviors make a great contribution to the superplastic flow.

Abstract:Laser forming of metal sheet is a forming technology of sheet without a die that the sheet is deformed by internal thermal stress induced by partially irradiation of a laser beam. In this paper, the bending behavior of common stainless steel 1Cr18Ni9 sheet is studied after being irradiated by straight line with a Nd:YAG pulse laser beam. The aim of the investigation is to find out the relationship of the bending angles and physical behaviors with the pulse parameters of the laser. The experimental results show that the pulse energy is the most important influencing factor which influences the bending angles in pulse laser forming of metal sheet in the pulse parameters. The microstructures show that the deformed grain structure is inhomogeneous, that caused the formation of the grain sizes and grain orientations are different in heat-affected zones. But the results of the X-ray diffraction analysis show that the contents of elements have little change between the irradiated zones and raw materials. And the hardness of irradiated zones is increasing in comparison to the initial raw hardness. By qualitative analysis of experimental result, the conclusion obtained may provide basis for theoretical investigation and possible industrial application of laser bending process in the future.

Abstract:Laser peen forming is a viable means for flexible shaping and adjusting of metal plate. The prestress is effective and useful to improve its formability. Experiments and numerical modeling are performed to investigate the effect of elastic prestress on the deformed shape generated by laser peen forming of aluminum alloy of 2024-T351. The experiments with prestressing laser peen forming are implemented in one direction of square samples by applying simple bending. A newly developed eigenstrain-based modeling procedure is introduced to simulate the prestress effects on the bending deformation and residual stresses. The boundary conditions of displacement are proposed to define in the explicit model to include the prestress effect. The numerical model is validated to be an effective and efficient tool for the predictions of deformed shape and residual stresses. Both experiments and model predictions provide that the radius of curvature in the direction of prebending can be greatly decreased by the increase of prebending curvature because much more in-plane plastic strains are generated during laser shocking. The scanning strategy is one important factor to generate the difference of bending in two directions besides prebending and spatial decay of shock pressure. The compressive residual stresses are observed to generate both at the top and at the bottom surfaces of samples. The increase of prebending curvature can increase the compressive residual stresses values at the top surface. And laser peen forming both with and without prestress is observed to have little effect on the surface roughness.

Abstract:Laser forming(LF) is a new die-less forming technique that used the energy from a laser beam to modify and adjust the curvature of sheet metals.In order to explore the mechanism and describe the elastic-plastic deformation process of 3-dimentional laser forming(3DLF),the explicit dynamic analysis on 3DLF of thin square sheet to spherical dome with spider lines strategy is shown in the article.This paper discusses the interaction between moving laser beam and sheet,the temperature field on the sheet,and the step transition of strain,stress and deformation of the particles on the sheet in 3DLF.The work presented in this paper show that the thermal stress and the stress wave induced by the stress and strain in the sheet are the main influence factors in 3DLF.The mechanism of 3DLF is unlike the mechanism of simple straight line scanning LF,the changes of the strain and the deformation is correlated with the stress wave.This work in the paper is base for the further research on the mechanism of 3DLF.
