Abstract:Boundary lubrication state may dominate the friction pairs operating under severe conditions, yet its mechanism is not clearly understood and related numerical models are still lacking. A boundary lubrication model considering zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) tribofilms, which impact friction and wear performances, was developed in this study. A series of reciprocating experiments were conducted to verify this model and also to investigate the effects of the tribofilm on friction and wear under various temperatures and loads. Moreover, the experimental data were employed to modify the tribofilm removal equation, which enabled the present boundary lubrication model to be applied under a wide range of loads. The results showed that the friction force and wear depth both decline with the increasing lubricant temperature due to thicker tribofilms formed. As the load becomes heavier, the wear depth keeps increasing, while the tribofilm thickness first increases then decreases.

Abstract:The paper aims to reveal the lubrication bearing mechanism of double-film bearing under different conditions. Modified lubrication models of double-film bearing with laminar/turbulent effect, cavitation and other conditions are established. The function reflection relations between lubrication behavior and structural parameters, working condition parameters are illuminated. The regulations of influences of coupling factors (eccentricity ratio, speed, length-diameter ratio, misaligned angle and operating models) on lubrication characteristics are explored. The lubrication mechanism of double-liquid film interface is elucidated. The variation rules of bearing performance are summarized. The research is important to the optimal design (load-carrying capacity enhancement & friction-reduction) of the double-film bearing.

Abstract:For the influence of boundary film on the lubrication state of sliding friction pairs, a boundary film strength model was proposed that can comprehensively reflect the influences of film thickness, pressure, shear stress and temperature. The model parameters were obtained through fitting the test results. Then, a mixed lubrication model considering boundary film strength was established by coupling the boundary film strength model with the hydrodynamic lubrication model and the asperity contact model. The calculation program was developed using the Fortran language, which can effectively capture the tribological characteristics and action ratios of the fluid, boundary film and dry friction components. Simultaneously, the mixed lubrication model was applied to the journal bearing. A parametric analysis was performed to investigate the influences of different working conditions on lubrication performance. Under current operating conditions, the results show that: when the speed is above 200 r/min or the viscosity is higher than 0.09 Pa·s, the boundary film breakdown rate is almost 0 and the friction coefficient is lower than 0.02; when the roughness is reduced from 1.8 μm to 0.8 μm, the ultimate load of the journal bearing rises from 27 MPa to 36 MPa, an increase of about 33%; when the load exceeds 36 MPa or the temperature is higher than 100 °C, more than 25% of the boundary film breaks and the dry friction component accounts for more than 60% of the total friction, which leads to a sudden increase in the friction coefficient. Hence, the study of mixed lubrication considering boundary film strength provides theoretical guidance for accurately reflecting the actual lubrication state and improving the mechanical energy efficiency of friction pairs.

Abstract:Boundary lubrication with extremely thin films widely occurs in various situations, for instance, in micro-electromechanical system lubrication and hard disk drive lubrication. Lubrication performance is significantly affected by the surface layer properties and interactions between solids and liquids. However, the molecular dynamical behaviors are still unclear. Thus, our work considers the dynamical behaviors of molecules under boundary lubrication via molecular dynamics simulations. Different pressures and metal slab shapes are chosen as the variable conditions. The results indicate that a smooth metal slab model has a special conformation recovery process during compressing under medium pressures. After inducing shear velocity, the lubrication film exhibits sticky, stick-slip, or slip flows under different pressures. Sticky flow is accompanied by a conformation adjustment consisting of conformation recovery, chain alignment, and structure equilibrium, but there is no chain alignment step in the other two flow modes. The conformation recovery includes atomic adsorption onto the Fe wall under small and medium pressures. Under large pressures, the conformation recovery refers to atomic desorption phenomena. In addition, some properties, such as gyration and chain orientation, are strongly modified by the solid surface and show distinct differences along the pressing direction. Under the same simulation conditions, the rough wall model shows no slip behaviors attributed to the increased equivalent contact wall area and stronger pinning effect. Our work provides new insights into understanding the in-depth mechanism of boundary lubrication, providing theoretical guidance in developing advanced boundary lubrication techniques.

Abstract:Extreme pressure (EP) and antiwear (AW) additives are necessary for boundary lubrication. However, their mechanisms and physical and chemical properties remain unclear. EP and AW additives were reviewed to fill gaps in theoretical and industrial applications. Compounds containing chlorine, sulfur, and phosphorus elements were first used in boundary lubrication because of thermal reaction with metal to form film characteristics. First, the mechanisms of traditional EP and AW additives were analyzed, the physical and chemical properties were compared, and properties affecting factors were studied. Traditional EP and AW additives are not environmentally friendly, but nanoparticle EP and AW additives are excellent substitutes. The mechanisms of nanoparticle EP and AW additives were summarized. The influence of nanoparticle structure parameters, concentration, and media polarity on properties was studied. Second, the influence law of non-polar chain length on traditional EP and AW additives was revealed. The improvement interval of traditional EP and AW additives on the performance of the base fluid was determined. The structural advantage of low crystallinity onion-like and multilayer sheet-like low wrinkle effect of nanoparticles was explained. The particle size design principle attached to the surface roughness and size-dependent melting inhibition mechanism was established. The influence of concentration and media polarity on nanoparticle properties was obtained. Finally, the research of minimum amount matching database and mathematical selection model for traditional EP and AW additives and the molecular dynamics analysis of surface-modified nanoparticles and the development of green general-purpose additives based on molecular design are prospected.

Abstract:Several new siloxane lubricants were synthesized with linear and ring-shaped branch structures of various lengths and branch contents, aiming at a search for better molecular design for lower boundary friction and more effective surface protection against wear of materials. Their molecular structure and mass were measured by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography, respectively. The new lubricants were compared with commercially available polysiloxanes, poly-α-olefins, and perfluoropolyether in lubricating a steel ball-on-steel disk interface using a tribotester at a load of 1.76 GPa and an entrainment speed of 0.025 m/s. The results are used to explain the effects of alkyl branch length L , pendant type J , percent of branch functional monomers Q , and degree of polymerization DP on siloxane design for the most effective boundary lubrication.

Abstract:A complete understanding of the mechanism of boundary lubrication is a goal that scientists have been striving to achieve over the past century. Although this complicated process has been far from fully revealed, a general picture and its influencing factors have been elucidated, not only at the macroscopic scale but also at the nanoscale, which is sufficiently clear to provide effective instructions for a lubrication design in engineering and even to efficiently control the boundary lubrication properties. Herein, we provide a review on the main advances, especially the breakthroughs in uncovering the mysterious but useful process of boundary lubrication by adsorption film. Despite the existence of an enormous amount of knowledge, albeit unsystematic, acquired in this area, in the present review, an effort was made to clarify the mainline of leading perspectives and methodologies in revealing the fundamental problems inherent to boundary lubrication. The main content of this review includes the formation of boundary film, the effects of boundary film on the adhesion and friction of rough surfaces, the behavior of adsorption film in boundary lubrication, boundary lubrication at the nanoscale, and the active control of boundary lubrication, generally sequenced based on the real history of our understanding of this process over the past century, incorporated by related modern concepts and prospects.

Abstract:Lubricant additives have broad application prospects in the field of lubrication because they have been proven to possess excellent antifriction and antiwear properties. However,most of the commercial lubricant additives contain P,S or some other harmful elements. Therefore,it is significant to look for more environmental friendly,economical lubricant additives to replace the traditional commercial lubricating oil additives. According to the different structures,tribological mechanisms of lubricant additives and some studies in lubrication area,this review focused on the preparation methods,tribological applications,development status and corresponding mechanism of nanoparticles (nano elemental and composite particles,nanometer oxide,nanometer nitride,and nanometer sulfide),N-containing heterocyclic compounds,boric acid esters and ionic liquids. This review also pointed out the main lubrication mechanisms are adsorption mechanism,the rolling mechanism and the friction reaction film mechanism. Finally,the existing problems were analyzed and the current research hotpot and future direction were still the preparation of composite additives and the tribological mechanisms.

Abstract:Changing the wettability and surface texturing have a significant impact on lubrication. In this study, the researchers used the molecular dynamics method to investigate how adjusting the interaction between alkanes and the wall affects oil film morphology and frictional properties under boundary lubrication. The findings revealed that the bearing capacity was influenced by both the morphology of the oil film and the strength of solid-liquid adsorption. In cases where the walls had weak wettability, the alkanes formed clusters to effectively separate the walls, while in cases where the walls had strong wettability, the oil film spread and formed a strong adsorption film. The super oleophilic textured surface could enhance the oil film adsorption capacity and replenish the oil film to the friction area in time, and the super oleophobic smooth surface could further reduce the friction coefficient. Therefore, a composite surface consisting of a super oleophilic textured surface and a super oleophobic smooth surface can be designed to enhance the bearing capacity of the oil film and reduce friction.
The mechanism of surface film of copper friction couple lubricated with ZDDP

Abstract:This paper has studied the surface film on popper friction couple lubricated with ZDDP through tribology experiments and surface analysis, analyzed the probable form of the chief elements existing in the surface film, and discussed the mechanism of ZDDP on antifriction and antiwear. The results show that the solid reaction film formed on the metal surface consists of organic compounds and inorganic compounds. The reaction film has better performance of antifriction and antiwear, and it may effectively reduce friction and wear. At the same time, ZDDP may improve the tribological performances of friction surface by means of surface modification.

Abstract:Matching experiments have been conducted, using a Falex tester, on the conventional lubricant antiwear additives of S agent, P agent and those containing both S and P agents. Also studied was a newly synthesized organo-boron antiwear additive for commonly used frictional materials (e.g. steel, copper and cast iron). Load-velocity diagrams of the four lubricant antiwear additives and six pairs of frictional couples were correlated. The chemical structures of boundary films on the surfaces of some typical frictional couples have been analyzed using Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:In water-based boundary lubrication regime, the contact gaps (or boundary lubricated film thickness) and surface pressure distribution must be determined to really understand the boundary lubricated contact mechanism. However, the accurate determination of these parameters is limited. In this study, a mechanical model based on boundary lubricated contact involving surface force effects is developed. The surface force distribution characteristics, normal force vs. central film thickness curve, and macroscale water-based boundary lubricated contact are investigated numerically. The results show that hydration directly affects surface force interaction. The accurate boundary lubricated film thickness and surface pressure distribution can be obtained using this model in point contact. Furthermore, the mechanism of macroscale water- based liquid boundary lubricated contact is investigated, in which a water-based boundary lubricated film is formed under appropriate operating conditions based on surface force effects during running-in. This study can reveal the water-base boundary lubricated contact behavior and the carrying capacity of the surface force effect, and provides important design guidance for the surface force effect to achieve liquid superlubricity in water-based boundary lubricated contacts.

Abstract:Abstract Surface moisture or humidity impacting the lubrication property is a ubiquitous phenomenon in tribological systems, which is demonstrated by a combination of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experiment for the organic friction modifier (OFM)-containing lubricant. The stearic acid and poly- α -olefin 4cSt (PAO4) were chosen as the OFM and base oil molecules, respectively. The physical adsorption indicates that on the moist surface water molecules are preferentially adsorbed on friction surface, and even make OFM adsorption film thoroughly leave surface and mix with base oil. In shear process, the adsorption of water film and desorption OFM film are further enhanced, particularly under higher shear rate. The simulated friction coefficient (that is proportional to shear rate) increases firstly and then decreases with thickening water film, in good agreement with experiments, while the slip length shows a contrary change. The wear increases with humidity due to tribochemistry revealing the continuous formation and removal of Si-O-Si network. The tribological discrepancy of OFM-containing lubricant in dry and humid conditions is attributed to the slip plane’s transformation from the interface between OFM adsorption film and lubricant bulk to the interface between adsorbed water films. This work provides a new thought to understand the boundary lubrication and failure of lubricant in humid environments, likely water is not always harmful in oil lubrication systems.

Abstract:A model based on energy dissipation was developed to describe the tribological behavior of solid lubricant films in sand–dust environment. A relationship between wear rate and coefficient of friction was obtained. Theoretical results kept well consistent with the experimental data in reported publications (Qi et al., Tribol Lett 38:195–205, 2010; Surf Interface Anal 43:836–846, 2011; Wear 271:899–910, 2011). It was pointed out that the absolute value of slope of the simulated straight line is closely related with mechanical properties of solid lubricant films. The results increased our understanding about the individual friction and wear mechanism for solid lubricant films in sand–dust environment.

Abstract:For the thin film lubrication, boundary lubrication, and local dry friction lubrication state of hydrodynamic bearing, a lubrication model of distributed liquid film is established in this paper which is designed to service for calculating or predicting the full life cycle design performance of water-lubricated bearing. The limitations of the fluid-solid-thermal coupling model for describing the distributed liquid film are investigated. Two new methods to build the lubrication model of distributed liquid film are given. The first one takes fluid-solid-thermal model that can guide the design of bearings parameters as dominant factor, and combines with wear, corrosion, two-phase of gas-liquid and other additional factors. A comprehensive model integrating simulation and mechanism can be built. Through researching the regional properties or distributed parameter of water film and solid interface, the second way proposes a decomposition and synthesis modeling method of water film and rubber. A distributed parameters model of dynamic characteristics for water-lubricated bearing is built. The lubrication theory of distributed liquid film proposed in this paper is appropriate for the situation when the film thickness is less than 10μm or contact. When the film thickness is greater than 10μm, classical lubrication theory is applicable.
Experimental Investigate of the Wear and Friction Performance Considering Effects of Surface Topography and Lubricant

Abstract:The wear and friction performance are two important concerns for most friction pairs. Under heavy load conditions, even lubricant exists between surfaces, sold contact and wear phenomenon may take place and lead to a higher friction when the oil film cannot fully support the load. Surface topography, in which roughness and texture are included, and lubricant characteristics, may be effective in prolonging the wear life and reducing the friction in engineering practice. In this study, these effects are experimentally investigated. The results show that appropriate options of surface topography can enhance the oil lubrication and reduce the wear. Moreover, the MoS2 based oil additive can help to form an anti-wear and low friction tribo film on surfaces. Application of both the appropriate surface topography option and lubricant additive has potential to save energy and prolong the wear life effectively.

Abstract:Reducing the friction and wear of dynamic interfaces has been a constant endeavor in the field of sustainability. Lubricants with two-dimensional atomic materials are operative frameworks proposed as promising candidates: they can together generate both a boundary tribofilm and a liquid hydrodynamic film in the interfacial domain. However, a quantitative characterization of the film formation and their coupling behaviors in the finite domain is lacking. Here, we report the coupling effect of tribofilms and hydrodynamic films regulated by typical representatives of two-dimensional material family (graphene, hBN, MoS2, and WS2). The anti-wear properties of the interfaces are attributed to the behavior of the tribofilm, whereas the anti-friction properties of the interfaces are attributed to the viscosity behavior of the hydrodynamic film. This study provides an understanding of the intrinsic coupling mechanism of a tribofilm and a hydrodynamic film and a possible strategy for the design of interfacial lubricating systems.
