Abstract:Liquid lubricant of low affinity makes slippery coatings widely used in lubricating, anti-biofouling, anti-icing, fluid guiding, and drag reduction. Two critical challenges, however, remain in the practical application of slippery coatings consisting of liquid lubricants: (1) universality regardless of roughness and chemical composition of substrates, (2) stability of surface lubricity against evaporation. Herein, a chemical method is reported to create a universal and stable slippery lubricant-adhesive cooperated coating (SLACC) through acid catalyzed dehydration reaction between the phenolic hydroxyl of polydopamine (PDA), with universal (for challenge-1) and strong (for challenge-2) adhesion properties, and liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with lubricant properties. Through overlying PDMS on PDA, a spatial gradient interpenetration of chemical combined PDA and PDMS leaving lubricant PDMS at the outermost of coating is achieved. This structure contributes to the following performances of SLACC: nearly universality suitable for 100 different abiotic or biotic substrates and stability sustainable for long-term usages, UV radiating, refrigerating, hot air drying, freeze drying, knife scratch and abrasion. This proposed strategy is envisioned anti-fouling from plane to tube and exhibits drag reduction in confined space.

Abstract:Lubricant has been widely applied to reduce wear and friction between the contact surfaces when they are in relative motion. In the current study, a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulation was specifically established to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the dynamic contact between two iron surfaces in a boundary friction system considering the mixed C4-alkane and nanoparticles as lubricant. The main research objective was to explore the effects of fluid and nanoparticles addition on the surface contact and friction force. It was found that nanoparticles acted like ball bearings between the contact surfaces, leading to a change of sliding friction mode to rolling friction mode. Under normal loads, plastic deformation occurred at the top surface because nanoparticles were mainly supporting the normal load. By increasing the number of C4-alkane molecules between two contact surfaces, the contact condition has been changed from partial to full lubrication. In addition, an attractive force from the solid–liquid LJ interaction between C4-alkane and surfaces was observed at the early stage of sliding, due to the large space formed by wall surfaces and nanoparticles. The findings in this paper would be beneficial for understanding the frictional behavior of a simple lubricant with or without nanoparticles addition in a small confinement.

Abstract:Several new siloxane lubricants were synthesized with linear and ring-shaped branch structures of various lengths and branch contents, aiming at a search for better molecular design for lower boundary friction and more effective surface protection against wear of materials. Their molecular structure and mass were measured by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography, respectively. The new lubricants were compared with commercially available polysiloxanes, poly-α-olefins, and perfluoropolyether in lubricating a steel ball-on-steel disk interface using a tribotester at a load of 1.76 GPa and an entrainment speed of 0.025 m/s. The results are used to explain the effects of alkyl branch length L , pendant type J , percent of branch functional monomers Q , and degree of polymerization DP on siloxane design for the most effective boundary lubrication.
Evaluation of tribological performance for laser textured surfaces with diverse wettabilities under water/oil lubrication environments

Abstract:Friction and wear are considered as one of the major issues for engineering applications where surface interactions exist. Textured surface with modified surface functionalities as well as lubrication condition will greatly affect the tribological performance. In this work, laser-based surface treatment methods were developed to modify the physicochemical properties of the textured surfaces. The surface microstructure, contact angle, chemical composition and tribological performance under different lubrication conditions of the fabricate surfaces were evaluated and analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the surfaces fabricated by laser texturing combined with chemical immersion or long-time storage in air obtain distinct superhydrophobicity, and the superhydrophobic surfaces render significantly reduced friction coefficient in both starved-water or starved-oil environments. It is believed that the surface texture, wettability and chemistry have combined effects on the tribological performance, which can facilitate the formation of a relative thicker lubricant film on the friction zone, and thus the effective contact area between the friction ball and the surface is reduced. This work is expected to provide effective methods to design and fabricate textured surfaces with different surface properties aiming to enhance the tribological performance, thus benefiting various industrial sectors that have strong demand for anti-friction surface.

Abstract:The problem that the not clear influence mechanism of micro-morphology characteristics on macro lubrication performance under water-lubricated bearings in service is studied. A two-dimensional fluid dynamics model of typical texture is constructed. The internal flow field characteristics and evolution law of micro-texture are investigated. The generation mechanisms of hydrodynamic effects of micro-texture are revealed. The water film model with 3D features is proposed. The functional mapping relationship between micro features and macro lubrication behavior is clarified, and the change characteristics of macro lubrication behavior are studied. Experimental data coincides with theoretical research. Fruits establish substantial base towards the optimization of load-increase and drag-reduction under water-lubricated bearing.

Abstract:Liquid superlubricity results in a near-frictionless lubrication state, which can greatly reduce friction and wear under aqueous conditions. However, during the running-in process, a large number of abrasive particles are generated, and because these may lead to a breakdown in superlubricity performance, they should be effectively removed. In this paper, the morphology, size, and composition of abrasive particles were verified using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and their influence on liquid superlubricity was explored through friction tests. Subsequently, different solvents were used to remove the abrasive particles, and the optimal cleaning process was determined by macroscopic tribo-tests and microscopic analysis. Finally, droplet-spreading experiments and a force-curve analysis were carried out to understand the abrasive-particle removal mechanism by different solvents. We found that SiO2 was the main component in the abrasive particles, and micron-sized SiO2 particles resulted in random "wave peaks" in the coefficient of friction and, thus, the superlubricity. Absolute ethanol + ultrapure water was determined to be the optimal solvent for effectively removing abrasive particles from friction-pair surfaces and helped the lubricant in exhibiting an ultralow friction coefficient for long periods of time. We proposed a "wedge" and "wrap" model to explain the abrasive-particle removal mechanism of different solvents. The SiO2 removal mechanism outlined in this study can be applied under aqueous conditions to improve the stability and durability of liquid superlubricity in practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Wettability effect has long been a concern in various aqueous lubrication systems including biological and industrial applications. The wettability may affect lubrication performance by changing interfacial viscosity or hydration force. The key point to reveal the mechanism is to design an ideal exper-imental system to exclude other bulk factors other than surface wettability. Experiments: In this work, silicon surfaces with different treatments were used to study the single factor effect of wettability on aqueous lubrication. The normal and friction forces of these surfaces were quan-tified by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in water environment. The interfacial viscosity was evaluated according to the probe dynamic approaching process. Macroscale and microscale lubrication experiments of other materials were also conducted as verification and supplement. Findings: A semi-quantitative relationship between friction and wettability was revealed and attributed to the competition between the attractive van der Waals interactions and wettability-dependent repul-sive hydration interaction, which determined the strength of the adhesive interaction and dominated the sliding energy dissipation. The contribution of viscous effect of water was considered to be relatively minor. The findings provide an in-depth understanding of aqueous lubrication and outline important guidelines for tuning adhesion and friction. CO 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Load and velocity boundaries of oil-based superlubricity using 1,3-diketone

Abstract:The clarification of the critical operating conditions and the failure mechanism of superlubricity systems is of great significance for seeking appropriate applications in industry. In this work, the superlubricity region of 1,3-diketone oil EPND (1-(4-ethyl phenyl) nonane-1,3-dione) on steel surfaces was identified by performing a series of ball-on-disk rotation friction tests under various normal loads (3.5–64 N) and sliding velocities (100–600 mm/s). The result shows that beyond certain loads or velocities superlubricity failed to be reached due to the following negative effects: (1) Under low load (≤ 3.5 N), insufficient running-in could not ensure good asperity level conformity between the upper and lower surfaces; (2) the high load (≥ 64 N) produced excessive wear and big debris; (3) at low velocity (≤ 100 mm/s), the weak hydrodynamic effect and the generated debris deteriorated the lubrication performance; (4) at high velocity (≥ 500 mm/s), oil migration occurred and resulted in oil starvation. In order to expand the load and velocity boundaries of the superlubricity region, an optimized running-in method was proposed to avoid the above negative effects. By initially operating a running-in process under a suitable combination of load and velocity (e.g. 16 N and 300 mm/s) and then switching to the target certain higher or lower load/velocity (e.g. 100 N), the superlubricity region could break through its original boundaries. The result of this work suggests that oil-based superlubricity of 1,3-diketone is a promising solution to friction reduction under suitable operating conditions especially using a well-designed running-in strategy.

Abstract:This article presents an experimental study about boundary slippage on the film thickness of hydrodynamic lubrication (HL) using a custom‐made slider‐on‐disc bearing testing apparatus. The interfaces with different affinity were obtained by surface energy modification of sliders with various oleophobic coatings, which are characterised by their contact angle (CA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH). To study the mechanism of interfacial slip on HL under different wettability constraints, the film thickness and velocity profiles under shear were measured using interference and fluorescence photobleached method, respectively. The results showed that the CAH could better characterise the influence of interface effect on the film thickness of HL, which was explained by the correlation between CAH and the interface potential barrier. Furthermore, it was found that the slip velocity increased with lubricant viscosity and shear rate, which can be explained by the spatial heterogeneity of the flow in conformal contact and the critical shear stress slip model.

Abstract:Amorphous carbon (a-C) film provides ultralow friction when combined with lubricating oil. However, it is unclear how textured surfaces affect the friction behavior of a-C at atomic scale, specifically the transformation of interfacial structure and the flow of lubricating oil, owing to the limitations of experimental characterization. Here, a-C films with different textured surfaces were fabricated, and the friction behaviors of mating a-C surfaces with textured parameters, including nanoscale depth and width, were examined by reactive molecular dynamics simulation. Results indicate that compared to that under dry condition, the introduction of a textured surface reduces the friction coefficient of a-C under oil lubrication condition. However, its efficiency highly depends on the depth and width of textured surface, exhibiting different effects on hydrodynamic lubrication. The increase in textured depth causes the friction coefficient decreased first and then increased, attributing to the lubrication from hydrodynamic to boundary state as primary mechanism. The regional aggregation of lubricant atoms with a textured width on the a-C surface occurs at the friction interface following the increased friction coefficient. These results provide insights into the underlying friction mechanism of a-C films induced by surface texturing and enable the development of highly efficient lubrication systems for applications.

Abstract:There is an intrinsic link between boundary slip and superlubricity. However, due to limitations in experimental techniques, the slip length cannot be precisely measured, leaving the mechanism of boundary slip controversial. This paper aims to accurately measure the slip length at the solid-liquid interface under oil-lubricated elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) conditions using experimental methods, and to explore the friction reduction due to boundary slip. The study reveals that both omniphobic (lotus leaf essence) coatings and two-dimensional (2D) material (MoS 2 ) coatings facilitate boundary slip. The slip length measurement method proposed in this study builds a bridge between oil film thickness and slip length, successfully addressing a key issue in boundary slip research. The findings confirm the significant friction reduction due to boundary slip, representing a major advancement in reducing friction in oil-lubricated EHL contacts through boundary slip. Future research should focus on searching for coating materials with a slip length on the micrometer scale so that superlubricity could be achieved.

Abstract:The anti‐emulsification property of lubricating oil is an important index to measure the quality of oil. In this paper, the behaviour of surfactants such as lubricating oil additives at the oil–water interface and the influence of the position of ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO) in the block polyether demulsifier on the demulsification effect were investigated by molecular simulation and experimental verification. The properties of seven lubricating oil additives with different functions and two pairs of isomers were investigated by molecular simulation, and their demulsification effects were verified by experiments. Some simulation results such as interface thickness and density distribution can accurately predict the experimental demulsification effect. Moreover, it was found that the position isomerism of surfactants affected the demulsification performance by changing the lipophilic balance and interface properties. The demulsification performance of sequenced copolymers is generally better than that of anti‐sequenced copolymers. The accurate prediction of molecular dynamics simulation makes the selection of lubricating oil demulsifier more extensive and has practical application value.

Abstract:Abstract The passivation of hydrogen atoms and the conformation of textured surfaces under oil-lubricated conditions are effective strategies to obtain amorphous carbon (a-C) films with extremely low friction. It is critical to understanding the influence mechanism of selective surface hydrogenation on the tribological behaviors of textured a-C film under oil-lubricated conditions. In particular, the interactions of hydrogen atoms and lubricants are confusing, which is enslaved to the in situ characterization technique. The reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulations were conducted to analyze the friction response of textured a-C films with selective hydrogenation surfaces under oil-lubricated conditions. The results indicate that the existence of hydrogen atoms on specific bump sites significantly decreases the friction coefficient ( μ ) of textured a-C film, which is highly dependent on the surface hydrogen content. The repulsion between hydrogen atoms and lubricant molecules prompts the formation of a dense lubricant film on the surface of the mating material. Interestingly, with the enhancement of the surface hydrogen content, the passivation of the friction interface and the repulsion between hydrogen atoms and lubricants play dominant roles in reducing the friction coefficient instead of hydrodynamic lubrication.

Abstract:Effective maintenance of lubricants within the frictional interface is of great importance for the long-life operation of mechanical components. This paper proposes a wedge-shaped lyophilic groove with secondary structures on superlyophobic surfaces to achieve unidirectional guidance of liquid droplets. The experimental studies demonstrate its rapid and long-distance unidirectional self-driven spreading on water and oil droplets. Then, wedge-shaped lyophilic grooves were designed on non-contact area of friction pair to guide lubricant. Relatively lower and more stable friction coefficients were achieved. Further analysis reveals that wedge-shaped grooves restrict the drainage of liquid lubricants. The results of bearing experiments show that designing lyophilic wedge-shaped grooves in the non-contact area of the rolling bearing can effectively reduce the temperature rise of the outer ring.

Abstract:Reducing friction using lubricant is of great significance to reducing energy consumption and extending the life of machinery. Surface texturing is effective to enhance the lubrication condition, and it is crucial to properly design the texture's morphology. In this study, a sector-shaped surface texture is designed and demonstrated using both numerical and experimental methods. A computational fluid dynamic method based on Navier–Stokes equations and a two-phase cavitation model is performed to evaluate the effect of the texture in the hydrodynamic lift and to optimize the geometrical parameters of the texture. The mechanism associated with the additional hydrodynamic pressure generation is also revealed according to the results of the simulation. Then, pin-on-disk rotary friction experiments are performed on steel disks textured by a femtosecond laser to verify the lubricant effect of the proposed texture. The results of the experiment suggest that the sector-shaped textures reduce friction more than conventional circle-shaped textures, which coincides well with the results of the simulation.

Abstract:Abstract Surface moisture or humidity impacting the lubrication property is a ubiquitous phenomenon in tribological systems, which is demonstrated by a combination of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and experiment for the organic friction modifier (OFM)-containing lubricant. The stearic acid and poly- α -olefin 4cSt (PAO4) were chosen as the OFM and base oil molecules, respectively. The physical adsorption indicates that on the moist surface water molecules are preferentially adsorbed on friction surface, and even make OFM adsorption film thoroughly leave surface and mix with base oil. In shear process, the adsorption of water film and desorption OFM film are further enhanced, particularly under higher shear rate. The simulated friction coefficient (that is proportional to shear rate) increases firstly and then decreases with thickening water film, in good agreement with experiments, while the slip length shows a contrary change. The wear increases with humidity due to tribochemistry revealing the continuous formation and removal of Si-O-Si network. The tribological discrepancy of OFM-containing lubricant in dry and humid conditions is attributed to the slip plane’s transformation from the interface between OFM adsorption film and lubricant bulk to the interface between adsorbed water films. This work provides a new thought to understand the boundary lubrication and failure of lubricant in humid environments, likely water is not always harmful in oil lubrication systems.

Abstract:The frictional properties of two-component mixed alkanethiol monolayers were investigated with frictional force microscopy. With large chain length differences, the two types of molecules segregated into large islands and reveal similar frictional properties as those of single-component monolayers. With small chain length differences, the completely mixed monolayers display a decreased friction as compared with single-component monolayers. This observation indicates that development of gauche kinks in the top portion of the mixed monolayers can enhance lubrication rather than increase friction, perhaps due to suppression of other energy dissipation channels.

Abstract:Owing to the green, high-performance, and application-specific work conditions, water-based lubricating systems show unlimited potential for chemical engineering development. The interfacial behavior of functional additives in aqueous systems is complex and variable due to polarity and interfacial activity, thus showing important research significance. Herein, five novel ionic liquids were synthesized; their unique interfacial behavior in the polar water system contributes a lot to the advanced corrosion resistance and the improved extreme pressure-bearing capacity. The polar groups in the molecular structure of ionic liquids can adsorb preferentially in competition with water molecules, resulting in the formation of an adsorption layer with a high elastic modulus on the metal surface. Benefiting from the tribochemical reaction and the strong polar adsorption effect, the tribofilm at the sliding asperity exhibited effective antiscuffing and antiwear performance. Moreover, their characteristic cationic groups enrich the driving force of the molecular self-assembly process and enhance the ability to form ordered molecular aggregates, whose behavior in an aqueous system facilitates super-robust lubricity. This work can promote the in-depth understanding, future design, and optimization of the aqueous lubricating system, providing content enrichment and expansion for the lubrication technology for harsh service conditions.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and optical contact angle measurements were performed to shed light on the microscopic mechanisms for the dynamic wetting of heavy oil on rough silica surfaces. The surface wetting process was characterized by interaction energy, wettability transition, density profile, and penetration of each oil fraction, while competitive adsorption between oil and water droplets on rough surfaces was also investigated. Results highlighted the role of asphaltenes on the distribution and penetration of resins and aromatics, which might become either a driving force or mass transfer resistance for the wettability transition on rough surfaces. The competitive adsorption process was divided into three steps including water bridge formation, water penetration, and oil penetration. Water penetration promoted oil penetration by providing a channel for asphaltene invading. The overall tendency of simulation results agreed experimental observations. To our knowledge, this was the first attempt to gain atomistic insights into the heavy oil adsorption on rough mineral surfaces. Future works should focus on the interactions between heavy fractions of crude oil and a rough mineral surface, while oil mixture models involving asphaltenes should be encouraged in MD simulations for better interpreting the adsorption of oil contaminants in soils.

Abstract:Combining textured amorphous carbon (a-C) film with lubricant achieves ultra-low friction to improve the mechanical component's service life. However, the coupling influence of lubricant viscosity and textured shape on friction behavior and interfacial transformation are still unclear. In this work, the evolution of friction performance with Poly - alpha - olefin viscosities and its dependence on textured shapes were investigated by reactive molecular dynamics simulation. Results reveal that as the textured shape is fixed, increasing the lubricant viscosity causes friction coefficient to decline first and then increase, due to the hydrodynamic lubrication and regional aggregation of lubricant. While under same lubricant condition, rectangular textured systems exhibit lower friction coefficient than circular textured ones, attributing to the formation of stable lubricant film without serious aggregation.
