Abstract:We investigate many-body effects near the edge of a single-walled carbon nanotube and find it turns magnetic with quantized edge moment solely depends on the chiral vector, i.e. the topology of the carbon nanotube. The distribution of the edge moment reveals an approximate supersymmetry even in a realistic model. Our findings demonstrate crucial importance of the interplay between the electronic correlation and the edge morphology. The edge moment provides an excellent candidate for nanomagnet farbrication which has potential applications in biological and chemical detections, and in spintronics.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have attracted considerable interest for their unique electronic properties. They are fascinating candidates for fundamental studies of one dimensional materials as well as for future molecular electronics applications. The molecular orbitals of nanotubes are of particular importance as they govern the transport properties and the chemical reactivity of the system. Here we show for the first time a complete experimental investigation of molecular orbitals of single wall carbon nanotubes using atomically resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Local conductance measurements show spectacular carbon-carbon bond asymmetry at the Van Hove singularities for both semiconducting and metallic tubes, demonstrating the symmetry breaking of molecular orbitals in nanotubes. Whatever the tube, only two types of complementary orbitals are alternatively observed. An analytical tight-binding model describing the interference patterns of ? orbitals confirmed by ab initio calculations, perfectly reproduces the experimental results.

Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.

Abstract:The influence of a fullerene molecule trapped inside a single-wall carbon nanotube on resonant electron transport at low temperatures and strong polaronic coupling is theoretically discussed. Strong peak to peak fluctuations and anomalous temperature behavior of conductance amplitudes are predicted and investigated. The influence of the chiral properties of carbon nanotubes on transport is also studied.

Topology and zero energy edge states in carbon nanotubes with superconducting pairing

Abstract:We investigate the spectrum of finite-length carbon nanotubes in the presence of onsite and nearest-neighbor superconducting pairing terms. A one-dimensional ladder-type lattice model is developed to explore the low-energy spectrum and the nature of the electronic states. We find that zero energy edge states can emerge in zigzag class carbon nanotubes as a combined effect of curvature-induced Dirac point shift and strong superconducting coupling between nearest-neighbor sites. The chiral symmetry of the system is exploited to define a winding number topological invariant. The associated topological phase diagram shows regions with nontrivial winding number in the plane of chemical potential and superconducting nearest-neighbor pair potential (relative to the onsite pair potential). A one-dimensional continuum model reveals the topological origin of the zero energy edge states: A bulk-edge correspondence is proven, which shows that the condition for nontrivial winding number and that for the emergence of edge states are identical. For armchair class nanotubes, the presence of edge states in the superconducting gap depends on the nanotube's boundary shape. For the minimal boundary condition, the emergence of the subgap states can also be deduced from the winding number.

Abstract:In response to the comment by Zhu and Berakdar (arXiv:1207.3457) that the physical system considered by them in their previous work [Ding et al., PRB 84, 115433 (2011)] is conceptually different from ours in the appendix of our latest paper [Zhou and Wu, arXiv:1206.3435], we show why they are relevant and further point out conceptually the problems in their work. We also point out that the main supporting arguments in their comment are incorrect.
Coherent electron transport in a helical nanotube

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of carriers bound to helical tube surfaces is investigated in a thin-layer quantization scheme. By numerically solving the open-boundary Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation in curvilinear coordinates, geometric effect on the coherent transmission spectra is analysed in the case of single propagating mode as well as multimode. It is shown that, the coiling endows the helical nanotube with different transport properties from a bent cylindrical surface. Fano resonance appears as a purely geometric effect in the conductance, the corresponding energy of quasibound state is obviously influenced by the torsion and length of the nanotube. We also find new plateaus in the conductance. The transport of double-degenerate mode in this geometry is reminiscent of the Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and spin angular momentum in quasi-one-dimensional structure.
