Abstract:One-dimensional wires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, magnetic field, and strong electron-electron interactions are described by a spiral Luttinger liquid model. We develop a theory to investigate the tunneling density of states into a spiral Luttinger liquid under the proximity effect with superconductors. This approach provides a way to disentangle the delicate interplay between superconducting correlations and strong electron interactions. If the wire-superconductor boundary is dominated by Andreev reflection, we find that in the vicinity of the interface the zero-bias tunneling anomaly reveals a power law enhancement with the unusual exponent. Far away from the interface strong correlations inherent to the Luttinger liquid prevail and restore conventional suppression of the tunneling density of states at the Fermi level, which acquire, however, a Friedel-like oscillatory envelope with the period renormalized by the strength of the interaction.

Abstract:We have performed a theoretical study of the effects of pinning potential and dissipation on vortex tunneling in superconductors. Analytical results are obtained in various limits relevant to experiment. In general we have found that pinning and dissipation tend to suppress the effect of the vortex velocity dependent part of the Magnus force on vortex tunneling.

Abstract:We present a semiclassical study of a transport process, the tunneling, in the presence of a magnetic field and a dissipative environment. We have found that the problem can be mapped onto an effective one-dimensional one, and the tunneling rate is strongly affected by the magnetic field, such as a complete suppression by a large parallel magnetic field, an example of the dynamical localization. In such case a small perpendicular component of the field, or the dissipation, can enhance the tunneling rate. In the small parallel field and finite temperatures the tunneling rate is finite. Explicit expressions will be presented in those cases. If viewing the tunneling in the presence of a magnetic field as a dissipative tunneling process, by varying the magnetic field and the potential one can obtain the dissipative spectral function between the subohmic s = 0 and the superohmic s = ∞. In combination with a real dissipative spectral function, the effect of the magnetic field can map the spectral function from s to 2 − s, with s > 2 mapping to s = 0, revealing a dual symmetry between the friction and the Lorentz force. Two cases relevant to experiments, the edge state tunneling in a Hall bar and the tunneling near the dynamical localization will be discussed in detail.

Abstract:In a recent Letter Morita, Kohmoto and Maki analyzed the structure of quasiparticle states near a single vortex in a d-wave superconductor using an approximate version of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes theory. Their principal result is the existence of a bound state within the core region at finite energy with full rotational symmetry, which they assert explains the recent scanning tunneling microscopy results on YBCO single crystals. Here we argue that the approximation used in this work is fundamentally inadequate for the description of a d-wave vortex and that the obtained circular symmetry of the local density of states is an unphysical artifact of this approximation.

Abstract:We consider the structure and dynamics of two-dimensional fluxons created by a magnetic field in a type-II superconductor film with critical temperature T-1 in the presence of nanostripes of material with a higher critical temperature T-2. The width of the stripes is of the order of the coherence length xi. Such a stripe plays the role of a potential barrier for vortices. When subjected to the current J parallel to the stripe, vortices move toward the barrier. Below the critical current J(c), the flux flow is effectively halted by the barrier, while above J(c), flux penetrates the stripe and passes the barrier. The mechanism of the barrier penetration ("soliton tunneling" occurs even at zero temperature) is rather unusual: the vortices adjust their shape, and upon passing the barrier, they shrink their cores. The critical current and the I-V curves are calculated numerically and analytically using variational approach.

Abstract:The Bogoliubov–de Gennes equation and Blonder–Tinkham–Klapwijk model are applied to studying tunneling spectroscopy between a ferromagnet and s-wave superconductor carrying a supercurrent in the clean limit. It is found that a three peak structure including a peak at zero energy at nearly critical IS and Z≈0.5 appears because the system has become gapless for both normal metal/superconductor (N/S) and ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) junctions. In the presence of exchange energy, besides the gaplessness on the Fermi surface, the other interesting result is that the coherence peaks are split into two peaks respectively due to the presence of the transverse supercurrent in S, and the coherence peaks splitting becomes large with increasing the supercurrent.

Abstract:Using low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) we have investigated the vortex behaviours of two-dimensional superconducting Pb films at different thicknesses. STS at the vortex core shows an evolution of electronic states with film thickness. Transition from the clean limit to the dirty limit of superconductivity is identified, which can be ascribed to the decreased electronic mean free path induced by stronger scattering from the disordered interface at smaller thicknesses. A magnetic field dependent vortex core size is observed even for such a low- κ superconductor. The weak pinning induced by surface defects leads to the formation of a distorted hexagonal vortex lattice.

Abstract:Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of superconducting thin lanthanum films grown on a normal metal tungsten substrate reveal an extraordinarily large broadening of the coherence peaks. The observed broadening corresponds to very short electron-like quasiparticle lifetimes in the tunneling process. A thorough analysis considering the different relaxation processes reveals that the dominant mechanism is an efficient quasiparticle relaxation at the interface between the superconducting film and the underlying substrate. This process is of general relevance to scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies on thin superconducting films and enables measurements of film thicknesses via a spectroscopic method.

Abstract:We present low temperature tunneling density of states measurements of Pauli-limited Al films in which the Zeeman and orbital contributions to the critical field are comparable. We show that films in the thickness range of 6-7 nm exhibit a reentrant parallel critical field transition which is associated with a high entropy superconducting phase, similar to the high entropy solid phase of 3He responsible for the Pomeranchuk effect. This phase is characterized by an excess of states near the Fermi energy so long as the parallel critical field transition remains second order. Theoretical fits to the zero bias tunneling conductance are in good agreement with the data well below the transition but theory deviates significantly near the transition. The discrepancy is a consequence of the emergence of e-e interaction correlations as one enters the normal state.

Abstract:We discuss electric transport through a point contact which bridges Majorana fermion modes appearing at edges of two helical superconductors. The contents focus on effects of interference and interaction unique to the Majorana fermions and role of spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Besides the Josephson current, the quasi-particle conductance depends sensitively on phase difference and relative helicity between the two superconductors. The interaction among the Majorana fermions causes the power-law temperature dependences of conductance for various tunneling channels. Especially, in the presence of SOI, the conductance always increases as the temperature is lowered.

Abstract:The tunneling rate t_v of a vortex between two pinning sites (of strength V separated by d) is computed using the Bogoliubov expansion of vortex wavefunctions overlap. For BCS vortices, tunneling is suppressed beyond a few Fermi wavelengths. For Bose condensates, t_v = V exp(- pi n_s d^2/2), where n_s is the boson density. The analogy between vortex hopping in a superconducting film and 2D electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field is exploited. We derive the variable range hopping temperature, below which vortex tunneling contributes to magneto-resistance. Using the 'Quantum Hall Insulator' analogy we argue that the -Hall conductivity- (rather than the inverse Hall resistivity) measures the effective carrier density in domains of mobile vortices. Details of vortex wavefunctions and overlap calculations, and a general derivation of the Magnus coefficient for any wavefunction on the sphere, are provided in appendices.

Abstract:A single vortex overcoming the surface barrier in a mesoscopic superconductor with lateral dimensions of several coherence lengths and thickness of several nanometers provides an ideal platform to study thermal activation of a single vortex. In the presence of thermal fluctuations, there is non-zero probability for vortex penetration into or exclusion from the superconductor even when the surface barrier does not vanish. We consider the thermal activation of a single vortex in a mesoscopic superconducting disk of circular shape. To obtain statistics for the penetration and exclusion magnetic fields, slow and periodic magnetic fields are applied to the superconductor. We calculate the distribution of the penetration and exclusion fields from the thermal activation rate. This distribution can also be measured experimentally, which allows for a quantitative comparison.

Abstract:The properties of vortices in superconducting thin films are revisited. The interaction between two Pearl vortices in an infinite film is approximated at all distances by a simple expression. The interaction of a vortex with a regular lattice of real or image vortices is given. The two spring constants are calculated that one vortex in the vortex lattice feels when the surrounding vortices are rigidly pinned or are free. The modification of these London results by the finite size of real films is obtained. In finite films, the interaction force between two vortices is not a central force but depends on both vortex positions, not only on their distance. At the film edges the interaction energy is zero and the interaction force is peaked. Even far from the edges the vortex interaction considerably deviates from the Pearl result and is always smaller than it.

Abstract:Using a time-dependent two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory, we have studied the flow resistivity of vortices in the time-reversal-symmetry-breaking (T-breaking) phases of unconventional superconductors. The free vortex flow resistivity is found to be generally nonlinear against the magnetic field. The relevance of these results in explaining a recent experiment by Wu et al. is addressed. Abstract:When charge current passes through a normal metal that exhibits spin Hall effect, spin accumulates at the edge of the sample in the transverse direction. We predict that this spin accumulation, or spin voltage, enables quantum tunneling of spin through an insulator or vacuum to reach a ferromagnet, which causes a spin-transfer torque on the ferromagnet that in general does not decay monotonically with the thickness of the insulator or vacuum. Combining with the spin Hall magnetoresistance, this tunneling mechanism points to a new type of tunneling spectroscopy that can probe the magnon density of states of an insulator in a noninvasive manner.
